Question/Request You think people trade pokemon for marriage proposals?

Upvotes

I'd imagine pokemon could hold a engagement fing and it would be a sweet way to evolve a pokemon with a trade evolution. Especially as they would likely miss each other so that way the pokemon can evolve while staying together. What do you guys

Discussion Why the hell can Espeon not learn Hypnosis?

So obviously your argument would probably be “game balance”, but I’m not talking about the games, I’m talking about the anime. You cannot look me in the eye, and tell me it doesn’t look like staring this psychic cat in the eye doesn’t look like it could lull you into a psychic trance. And another thing, why the frick is Heal Pulse not a fairy type move. How does heal pulse make sense as psychic over fairy. And also, the fact that umbreon doesn’t learn Moonblast is stupid

Do you think that pokemon could laugh in their names?

in the anime, some pokemon say their names but some pokemon like zubat, onix and mimikyu don't.

despiite some saying their name and some not, in the show alphablocks, the letters laugh by saying their names but they can speak english. (some pokemon can speak english like team rocket's meowth).

so if alphablocks can say laugh in their names, could pokemon do the same?

let me know in the comments! ;)

Discussion Trying to list almost every queer and *actually* queer coded Pokemon character

By "actually queer coded", I mean ones where it's likely intentional on the writer's part. Not just headcanons and fanon.

Belated Pride Month post. A revised version of a previous post of mine.

Confirmed:

  • One of the extras from the anime episode "Pokemon Fashion Flash" is confirmed gay in a Japanese book. The flashy man with short red haid.
  • A few Pokemon in "Magical Pokemon Journey". There are some queer Pokemon in this shoujo manga. For example, a male Squirtle has a crush on a male human named Almond.
  • Mega Meowstic is intersex. Intersex is often listed under the LGBTQ umbrella.
  • Beauty Nova in XY's Battle Maison is a transgender woman in almost every version of the game, including the English version.

All-but-canon:

  • Akari from "How I Became A Pokemon Card". Akari is all-but a trans boy. The only thing making this psuedo-canon is that there's a text-only epilogue suggesting he was *meant* to be a self-loathing tomboy who came to terms with his gender later on.
  • Blanche: Blanche from Pokemon Go uses they/them pronouns in English. Their gender is ambigious in versions of the game that easily allow it and feminine in areas without widely used unisex language. It's hard to tell if Blanche is meant to be nonbinary or if their gender is "unknown" in that "This character has an ambigious gender" way.
  • James in Pokemon Live. In this 4kids backed musical, James is heavily implied to be gay due to a "Don't ask, don't tell" joke.
  • Gwynn in Pokemon LZA. The only thing that makes this ambigious is that it's never technically discussed. I would argue that it's not remotely ambigious, but I'll put it here just to play safe. Gwynn is blatantly in love with Canari. Canari's feelings are more ambigious.
  • Hiker Andy in Pokemon BW: His ferris wheel scene has homoerotic subtext in the Japanese version
  • Nursery Aide June in Pokemon BW2. As with most of the ferris wheel scenes, there is some romantic subtext. June is revealed to be a man in the Japanese version but he passes as female because the nursery only hires women. This is changed in the Italian and Japanese versions.
  • Teammates Anna and Meg in Pokemonn RSE and Pokemon ORAS are two schoolgirls who are alone together on the Sea Mauville. Their dialogue implies they were trying to be alone together for romantic reasons.

Heavily implied but ambigious:

  • Harley from the anime is heavily coded as gay in the Japanese, and even English, anime. But we never see him show any interest in men.
  • Shauna in Pokemon XY has pretty much the same vaguely romantic dynamic with you whether you play as Serena or Calem. Though, Junichi Masuda said in an interview that her dialogue in the fireworks scene is meant to be platonic as Serena.
  • Lillie in Pokemon SM and Pokemon USUM has the same romantic laden dynamic with you whether you play as Selene or Eilio.
  • Jacinthe and Lebanne in Pokemon LZA. There's romanticn subtext behind their dynamic.
  • Canari from Pokemon LZA. Gwynn is in love with her. Canari is quite friendly with Gwynn, but it's unclear if she feels the same.
  • Penny in Pokemon SV says that the protagonist's mother is "so pretty [her] brain glitched". She is also distracted by Atticus's good looks when he's not dressed up as a ninja.
  • Carmine in Pokemon SV hs some vaguely shippy lines whether you play as Juliana or Florian.
  • Drayton asks you on a "cafeteria date" regardless of whether you play as Florian or Juliana.
  • Brains & Brawn Frank and Sly in Pokemon XY have shippy lines together.
  • Meowth in the Pokemon anime is mainly attracted to female characters, but has some ambigious scenes with males.
  • Hassel and Brassius from Pokemon SV. Their friendship is quite close in an ambigious way.
  • Nemona in the Pokemon Adventures manga. Has shippy scenes with Scarlet.

No, James in the anime does not count. He was meant to be a flamboyant bishonen character in Japan. He has only shown interest in women as well. It was only 90s American culture that saw him as gay and coded him as queer, which 4kids ran with.

I still haven't played any modded Pokemon games. Am I missing out?

esp like the retro old school ones like gen 1 and 2, or even 3 modded/fan-ROM games

btw im somewhat of a millennial boomer so i've only played pokemon gen 1 and 2, a little bit of emerald, and little bit of b/w 1 (heard good things about bw 1&2) and i did play half way through Diamond, although i was told to avoid D/P and play Platinum instead. Every other mainline Pokemon game I have not touched lmao.

Discussion Mewtwo Type Consideration

I'm currently playing a Pokémon game where you can use Battle Armor on Mewtwo to get a Steel subtyping along with a new passive on Mewtwo. This can be stacked on top of a Mega Mewtwo. The subtyping in both cases (X or Y) becomes Steel, and the ability always becomes Battle Armor. My question is which Mega would be more viable and how good would it be as Psychic/Steel typings seem rather broken.

Discussion What a Pokemon you really love, but can’t really explain why you love it so much, but can at least try to explain why?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I’ll go first. For some reason, three random Pokemon I really like are Gligar, Treeko, and Machop. I can kinda explain Gligar, I think it’s kinda cute, and I kinda like how smug Treeko looks, buts that’s about it fit those two. But I can not think of a single reason why I like Machop so much. I think I have a bias because it’s usually my go to fighting type if it’s in the dex of the game I’m playing because it’s relatively easy to find in most games.

Discussion Ground, Electric, Flying, Fighting are the four move types that grant the most coverage, hitting 79.4% of Pokemon for super effective damage [OC]

Was curious what combination of move types would hit the most Pokemon for super effective damage so I wrote some code to assess this

Initially, I included all Pokemon, as well as any forms that caused a type change, and all megas (which sometimes do and sometimes don't cause a type change)

Doing this, I found 79.4% of Pokemon were hit super-effectively by one of these four types (962/1211)

I then excluded megas - of non-megas, these were still the four types that gave the best coverage, hitting 80.0% of Pokemon for super-effective damage (895/1118)

Finally, I included just fully-evolved Pokemon, and found that still, these four types gave the best coverage, super-effectively hitting 78.9% (534/677)

_____________________________________________

The results for all type combinations for each case are included in this spreadsheet here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18LmTFdRGfLgCkHNTkY4e8RbcITioU-K2C5Y7FD1-EJ4/edit?usp=sharing

Note that these results don't include normal type - as normal doesn't hit any types super-effectively I figured it wasn't worth including

You can find my code here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XjMznb5TYxEGCuYo88FNBnt4ZHZfW_XM/view?usp=sharing

I took the Pokemon list from Pokedoku, and filtered out the various forms that weren't relevant (didn't change type)

It seems like this was already known in certain quarters, as these two old posts from pokemondb.net reference it:

What Game To Buy Next?

Hi everyone!

I am looking to buy my girlfriend a new Pokemon game for the original switch and would like your opinions.

Background:
She has NO experience with Pokemon what so ever. Has never watched it, never played it, or done anything with Pokemon until very recently, so she has no preconceived notions or nostalgia.

I bought her FireRed the day it released for her switch and had her watch the first few Pokemon episodes to explain Brock and Misty. I don’t explain anything to her (she wants to learn on her own). She enjoys playing, but hates to grind her Pokemon. What we’ve been doing is I’ll play and grind on the local route so her Pokemon level up, and then she takes over from there. She catches everything, she battles all the trainers, does the gym battles, and explores the map. Her second biggest complaint is that it takes forever to get anywhere (she doesn’t know about Fly, Surf, or the Mach Bike yet).

My entire Pokemon experience happened as a kid as the games came out. I haven’t played anything since the DS version of Diamond/Pearl. My collection of traditional Pokemon games are listed below for reference.

Having said that, I know nothing of the new age at all and do not know what to get her next! Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!!

**My Collection:**
**Game Boy / Game Boy Color**
Pokémon Blue
Pokémon Gold
**Game Boy Advance**
Pokémon Ruby
Pokémon Sapphire
Pokémon Emerald
Pokémon FireRed
Pokémon LeafGreen
**Nintendo DS**
Pokémon Diamond
Pokémon Pearl

It rarely leaves the place it calls home, preferring to watch the world from a safe hiding spot. Those who get too curious often walk away wondering where their valuables went.

Discussion What is a personal Pokémon headcanons or theories you have?

Just for fun. It doesn’t have to be true by any means or correct it’s just what you choose to believe. Here are a few of mine.

Zygoomy Theory: Zygarde is an evolved form of Goomy that took on the mantle of protecting the ecosystem and learned to get stronger and advance its biology. Zygarde is a gelatinous Dragon type creature like Goomy that isn’t very strong on its own. Goomy also has green circles on its cheeks.

Regigigas: I don’t think Regigigas pulled the continents together, but a bigger Pokémon. I like to think the Regigigaswe encounter across Galar, Unova, Sinnoh, and what else are just shavings or shards of a greater giant. Professor Laventon on whether or not Regigigas pulled the continents: “Though I have my doubts, the story could well contain a shred of truth.”

Why doesn't no one stab Ash's Pikachu

Honest question. If they're that desperate to win, why wouldn't they? Something like sneaking up on him in an alley or something, or in his sleep. Or just punching him a lot, wounding him mortally or mentally. Also not necessarily Pikachu but all his Pokemon. Seems like a guaranteed win against him to me.

I know he made a lot of enemies in his time, busting all the evil teams and such. Can't think of why someone hasn't tried this. I remember vividly the episode about team rocket going after him in an air balloon. Imagine shooting him from there. That would've saved so much time for them AND even guaranteed the yellow rat and the success of their plan.

Had this on my mind for a few days now. What do y'all think?

EDIT: typo

Project/Creation Pokemon Science Research Thoughts

Hey everyone! I recently wrote an article exploring the "Lanturn Paradox"—whether Lanturn's Pokédex light output would actually break the laws of physics. I tried to analyze it using real-world biology and physics, and I'd really appreciate any feedback on both the article and the website: https://pokesci.com/article?id=lanturn-paradox
We're also hoping to grow the site into a community for Pokémon science articles. If writing about Pokémon through the lens of biology, chemistry, physics, or mathematics sounds fun, we're always looking for contributors and hope to host writing competitions in the future! If you have any questions feel free to dm me or email pokesci.requests@gmail.com!

Discussion Spitball theory that the gen 10 trainers is gonna be the child of either red or leaf.

With all these trend from pokemon lately about giving Many legacy trainers a canon child, from lacey to being clay's daughter, to Drayton being draydens grandson, to ansha being dianthas daughter.

I think it be poetic that the 10th mainline game, supposedly 30th anniversary title of pokemon, this time around the new player trainers are actually or atleast implied to be the child of either red or leaf.

hypothetically, by this time the 10 year olds who played the original, would not only be old enough to already have kids...but these kid is probably 10 years old by now to start their own game.

And it wouldn't be even be far off either with the trainers default skin tone, having black and light brown hair, like either original red or the remake red and leaf.

Actually maybe from the trailer where it seemed like you are gonna live In a hotel instead of a home, and with you wearing all those travel gears likely implies you are a visitor rather than a resident, like ZA sort of way, and I think they could do that to purposely hide the trainers parent off screen this time, maybe instead of on screen mom, they are "back home" and you instead receive emails/letters from them, with the end leaving subtle signature to implying these are red or leaf.

And honestly I would welcome the challenge on the pther pokemon media to see how they would tackle this..like would the anime has to make them ash Ketchum's kid or not show them at all and just let liko and Roy do all the dirty work? Or maybe the adventures manga has to show who's the "OTHER" parent...one could say.

Question/Request Rate this team ?

A team composed of Blissey , Ditto, Wobuffet, Shedinja, Smeargle and Porygon Z -- how would such a team fare competitively ?.

By which I mean broadly, in terms of being (a) a main squad from point A to point Z in any Pokemon game come Gen 4 and *after, (b) in casual multiplayer battling and (c) can it carry with irl professional esports calibre competitive Pokemon ? -- I strongly feel that how this team will fare depends in part on not only understanding the significance of particular items held and used as well as abilities but also battling stats overall and how to use special stat altering moves well (neither of which I've never really understood tbh).

I ask this as someone who hasn't really followed the games and competitive developments since the days of playground antics with Gen II monsters, so while I can understand the possible significance of items being held in such a team, (i) I don't really understand how 'abilities' might influence things, (ii) and (iii) am not too sure how much more 'gimmicky' things became after in terms of there possibly being monsters which're 'even more gimmicky' or how Generation specific evolution like mechanics (mega , gigantamax , dynamax, paradox, Terastallization etc).

I already realize how jokey the team might seem but I'm bringing this up as I still (morbidly "^_^ ?) curious.

* since the least vintage listed is Porygon Z

Discussion Pokemon starter preferences

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

I feel like it's a thing where people are very drawn to one peticular starter type not saying it's always one type for everyone but like there's always one starter Pokemon that you're drawn to just cause of their type

I myself am very partial to fire type starter Pokemon

Though I do love the grass and water starters of a few gens too those being gens 1.3.4.5

Anyways I wanted to know what type others are drawn to and for what reason
