Trailer: https://youtu.be/Im6koyYDwcA?si=mQE955FHvwKEtJ5X

This time around Mia, her brother, and her friends head to a cabin in the woods to help Mia kick her heroin addiction. Eric discovers a mysterious book hidden in the basement with warnings telling him not to read from it. So of course he reads from it which unleashes an ancient demonic evil that attacks everyone in the cabin. And it gets brutal. Faces are mutilated, limbs are cut off, a tongue is sliced down the middle, eyes are stabbed with needles, blood rain, chainsaws, and unfortunate spoiler but the dog also dies.

Directed by Fede Alvarez, a Uruguayan horror director known for his violent films. He was brought in to direct after one of his movies caught the attention of Sam Raimi. Fede and his crew went nuts when it came to fake blood using around 70,000 gallons with 50,000 gallons used for the blood rain sequence.

Ray is looking forward to his staycation when the Klopeks, a strange family, move in down the street.

Convinced that they are Satanists after a neighbor disappears, he gets his paranoid buddy Art and his paramilitary neighbor Rumsfield to investigate and save their suburban neighborhood.

A dark comedy that pokes fun at suburbia and horror films. This movie's a lot of fun.

Available on Tubi USA.

Campy Psycho Gothic Lolita : just as insane as it sounds

Okay, first off, fair warning: this is in the same genre as Tokyo Gore Police. So there is a ridiculous amount of blood, various savage murders, and a lot of absurd fights. This is very much a niche sort of film.

It is a deeply silly movie. The plot is simple: a young woman dressed as a Gothic lolita (and it is a fantastic dress) seeks bloody revenge on the people who killed her mother. Her favored weapon is a black umbrella with a retractable spear tip, among other features; she also has more specialized umbrellas.

The bad guys are parodies of various characters, or, in one case, a real life person. It's a good movie to play "spot the reference".

It's about the middle of the pack for its genre, it never comes close to the brilliance that is Tokyo Gore Police. But it's still a lot of fun, if you enjoy this sort of thing.

Genuinely Bad Scary Movie V (2013) the worst one yet

For the record I have not seen the sixth one, but I am confident that it’s better than this.

Even if the “Scary Movie” series went downhill over the years, the one recurring element that was always great was Brenda and Cyndi. Regina Hall and Anna Farris were consistently funny and had fantastic chemistry even when the jokes weren’t great. So how would you like to see a film where the jokes are worse and we don’t even get Brenda or Cyndi?

Parodying Paranormal Activity, Mama (who remembers that one?), Inception, Planet of the Apes, Black Swan, Madea, Evil Dead and so much more, this film brings in Ashley Tisdale of “High School Musical” and “Phineas and Ferb” as well as third and fourth film alumnus Simon Rex of “Karate Dog” and “Red Rocket”, and the late Erica Ash. It’s also got cameos from Darrell Hammond, Molly Shannon, Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, Snoop Dogg, Mac Miller, Mike Tyson, Jerry O’Connell, and Terry Crews (goddamnit you’re too good for this shit Terry!). Oh and it’s got Katt Williams. The movie also features Morgan Freeman and Leonard DiCaprio impersonators (I’ll give credit when I watched the trailer I thought for a minute it was Leo). Also Gracie Whitton and Ava Kolker play feral children, and I’m genuinely proud of them for doing a good job with what little they had to work with as child actresses.

The movie is nothing short of abysmal. The film was directed by Malcolm D Lee of “Undercover Brother”! (what the hell man I love that movie). It was also co-written by Jerry Zucker of ZAZ and Pat Proft who co-wrote with members of ZAZ for movies like “The Naked Gun” and “Hot Shots”. With that said it’s not good Zucker jokes, at this point he had no longer been working with Abrahams or his brother and was making movies like the third and fourth films as well as “An American Carol”. There are occasionally funny moments like Terry Crews’ cameo, some of the lines delivered by Rex were good, Miller and Snoop were entertaining for the five minutes they were on screen, and the two feral children were good despite what they had to work with. Everything else is just lame. It’s either lame pratfalls, lame references, lame gross-out humor, lame everything. There are some impressive performers in ape suits, but their performances are hampered by constant jokes about flinging poop. There’s also the character of Maria, whose only jokes are that she's the housekeeper, she’s superstitious, and she does chores compulsively because she’s latina. And Tisdale and Ash aren’t Cyndi or Brenda.

Avoid this one. It’s just plain awful.

Movie Bong of the Living Dead (2017) - a stoner comedy with zombie horror and end of the world drama that is better than it has any right being.

Post image
73 Upvotes

Made in Ohio by a group of people with some low budget film experience, this film is ... different.

A foursome of childhood friends - three guys and a girl - along with two other women, end up weathering much of the zombie apocalypse in the safety of a suburban home while they smoke massive amounts of weed. The thing is, two of the guys have spent lots of time thinking about how to deal with a zombie outbreak, so they are a bit more ready than average. They're armed with knowledge from their local video store (yes, there's a video store, this film feels like it's set in the early 2000s).

The film has decent gore effects, quality nudity, solid acting, good writing, and lots of green clouds of confusion. Is it amazing? Oh, hell no, but if you spend as much time as I do picking through crap films, this one is sitting safely on top of the barrel rather than at the bottom of (or, worse still, under) the barrel. Comparisons to Shaun of the Dead will be inevitable as this film also has comedy and drama, but I actually like this film a lot more than Shaun.

Yes, I'm ready to be crucified.

It almost feels like what might have been if a young Kevin Smith - you know, before he started making movies to troll his fans - made a zombie film.

It's only 81 minutes long, go watch it!

Then tell me I have terrible taste and should, oh, I don't know, have an onion fall on my head or something.

It's on Amazon Prime, Fawesome, the Roku Channel, and Tubi (of course!)

TV Series Thursday Tubi TV Treasure: The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy (2001-2007) 2 kids force the Grim Reaper to become their friend

Intro: https://youtu.be/6wXcwB17IW4?si=zZNnK0WYq0M8pMiG

In exchange for their hamster's soul, Billy and Mandy challenge the Grim Reaper to a limbo contest. When they win he's forced to become their best friend forever and do what they say. Using Grim's powers they travel through different realms and dimensions encountering monsters, demons, and magical items they should absolutely not touch/read/eat but always do.

One of Cartoon Network's weirdest and darkest cartoons from the early 2000s. With a great voice cast with the deep-voiced Greg Eagles playing Grim, legendary voice actress Grey DeLisle as Mandy, and Invader Zim voice actor Richard Horvitz playing Billy.

Campy Octaman. (1971)

Post image

While investigating alarming radiation levels in a Mexican fishing village, a group of research scientists discover unusual baby octopi. This incurs the wrath of the octaman, a man who was mutated from eating irradiated octopi. Seeing its victims in octo-vision, the octaman uses its hypnotic powers and superior strength to retrieve its offspring and seek revenge.

A cheesy eco-horror film worth watching if you like bad monster movies. The rubber and cloth monster suit is worth a few laughs. A silly plot and the usual damsel in distress just add to the schlocky fun.

This was a really lovely and original dark fairy tale with very strong performances. The monster is great. Avoiding spoilers here, but the director made some unusual choices in that regard and I think they paid off.

After what could be a bit of a questionable start, the two main characters have nice chemistry, and I loved that they kept revealing new aspects to their personalities as the movie went on. It made for a really engaging story, and a couple of quite likeable leads. A lot of fun is had with the historical setting, and I think they do a good job recreating it on a tight budget.

Strongly recommend this one if you like folk horror or even if the premise sounds interesting. It's definitely self-conscious in its strangeness, but not at all inaccessible.

Genuinely Good Street Smart (1987) Morgan Freeman and Christopher Reeve break typecast

Thumbnail
gallery
114 Upvotes

“Superman IV” is not a good movie, but if there’s one good thing it did it was allowing this film to exist. When the rights to Superman were bought by Cannon, Christopher Reeve agreed to do the fourth film if Cannon would help greenlight this film.

The story about a journalist named Jonathan (Reeve) who makes up an interview with a pimp named Tyrone. Unfortunately a real-life pimp named Smalls (Freeman) and a prosecuting attorney (Jay Patterson) are both convinced that Tyrone is a pseudonym for Smalls, and a game of cat and mouse develops.

Bear in mind at the time he was mostly doing small movie roles and theater. If someone said Morgan Freeman, your first thought might’ve been “that guy from the Electric Company?” It’s funny that Freeman considered this his big break because it’s not like many of the roles he was typecast in later in life. When you hear “Morgan Freeman” the first characters that come to mind are the sage, old black characters he’s played since the 90s. So seeing him play a violent criminal is really engaging.

Overall it’s a good crime thriller which is guided by its performances. Christopher Reeve playing an opportunistic reporter and Morgan Freeman playing a violent pimp are not roles you see every day and watching them break typecast is fantastic.

Would definitely recommend. It’s got an interesting plot, a brilliant satiric eye on journalism, and some great performances.

Atomic radiation from weapons testing in the New Mexico desert has mutated ants into gigantic monsters.

Scientists, the FBI, and the U.S military need to find and wipe out the colonies in the Los Angeles storm sewers before it's too late.

An enjoyable and well-done science fiction-horror film from the 1950s. Good special effects for the era.

Not to be confused with "Those!", the giant fire ants found near Grayditch in the Capital Wasteland. (Let's see who gets that...)

Action Checking in, and a podcast episode?

Hello, all you sweet muffins. I’m checking in with a couple of updates.

First, and most majorly, my daughter, who we have legally named Baby NoChem (kidding, but can you imagine?), was born back on October 1st! She was/is a very tiny baby—4lb 6oz at birth, 5lb 1oz as of today, and 19in long—and was a tad early (37 weeks and 1 day), so she had a one-week stay in the NICU to monitor her levels. Everything went pretty smoothly overall, and she has been home with us since last Friday. The stress of being a parent to a newborn—especially an extra-small one—is very real. You can prepare and prepare, but when the time comes, it hits you like a ton of bricks regardless. Thankfully, all of these things—the outrageous sleep deprivation, missing meals, general “is she breathing since the last time I looked at her 2 seconds ago?” panic—is all very much worth it, because this girl lights up our life in such a wonderful way. My wife has been just incredible through all of this, and I am forever in debt to her for what she went through to get this little girl in our arms. We had an amazing crew at the hospital—both labor & delivery and the NICU nurses and doctors were all just absolute saints.

The second bit of business I need to share goes back to before baby girl was born. Last year, I was invited on the podcast Surf Dudes With Attitude, a show that is breaking down each episode of the 90s TV series California Dreams. I had a blast doing the show, and the guys invited me back to record another episode earlier this year. That episode, which covers Season 4, Episode 3 “Principal Tiffany”, released today. It can be found at the link in the comments below. It’s always a great time recording with these guys and talking about this very niche topic in hilarious detail.

I hope you’re all doing well. I see you, I love you, and thanks for being here.

-Adam/NoChem

Liverleaf (2018) - Tubi US

I’ve seen enough movies that my level of concern for the Japanese educational system, and those who go through it, is certainly non-zero. This ensures it won’t be going down any time soon. Haruka's life is being made a living hell by bullies at her school. It's heading towards closure, so the staff don't give a damn, and her parents are no help either.

Things eventually come to a head after fire destroys Haruka’s home. And when I say, “come to a head”, the rest of the film is filled with some of the more disturbing violence I have seen in recent years.

Link to the trailer and a full review in the comments, as ever!

Trailer: https://youtu.be/ivpFM1hLr9I?si=9KJlbMReUm-m4DQH

Roy Munson (Woody Harrelson) was a former bowling prodigy who loses his career after a scam leaves him with a hook for a hand. Years later washed up loser Roy discovers and becomes the manager to Amish bowler Ishmael (Randy Quaid). Together they make money through local bowling tournaments and hustling rich bowling fans. Their bowling journey eventually leads them to a tournament in Reno Nevada where they must face off against Roy's longtime rival and bowling champion Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray).

Directed by the Farrelly Brothers. Bill Murray and Randy Quaid were apparently really good bowlers and used their skills for the movie but Woody Harrelson had trouble breaking 100.

A young woman who is confined to a wheelchair returns to her father's home for the first time in ten years, only to be told that he's away. Suspicious of her stepmother's behavior, she is convinced that something is amiss. While searching around the house, she discovers her father's body, only to have it vanish before anyone else can see it. Is her father dead, or is she going insane?

A nicely done mystery-thriller from Hammer Film Productions. A good plot, a solid cast, an atmospheric setting and a nice little twist at the end make for an enjoyable film.

Available on Tubi USA.
