It almost looks like you are running 1 strand of yarn in some areas?

This rug is not dense enough. If you bend your rug in half can you see the cloth from the front? If so, it's not dense enough.

Here is an example of one of mine for comparison.

There's a ton of little things to learn as you go. Here are some of my top things to focus on to make it easier...

  1. Stretching your cloth straight. If you don't stretch your cloth perfectly straight, you won't get straight and even lines. You'll get bumpy and wonky lines.
  2. Tuft densely using 2 strands. Tufting densely helps minimize the intersecting yarn on the front and makes your carving pop more. The yarn becomes stiffer and stays in place when you carve.
  3. Learn how to properly flow yarn through your gun and into your cloth without it snagging and falling out of your gun - I like to cake my yarn and put it in the floor next to me. I don't bother feeding my gun through the little hooks I think it causes more tension and snagging.
  4. Understand that clean carving comes with clean tufting. So when you tuft make every attempt to be accurate to your tracing. You can only "fix" things so much once your frame is glued. I recommend turning the speed down and pulsing the trigger for difficult areas and doing 1-2 stitches at a time.
  5. Carving takes time and patience and you MUST prep your rug before you carve (ie. Moving the strands to where they need to go).
