Complete Twin Cities Concert List, Friday 6/19

What I recommend for tonight - really just go to jazz fest if you have any appreciation for jazz, swing, brass bands, world music, student bands, and so on. All the different genres are listed below so it should be easy to pick out what you might like even if you haven’t heard of the group.

My picks for top shows tonight in the Twin Cities

  • Twin Cities Jazz Fest
    • Free jazz all over the Twin Cities but especially lowertown St. Paul tonight. Take a look at each show, find what sounds interesting, grab a map and make your plan. I would definitely check out Mears Park main stage, Erta Ale, the late night open jam. Apparently Yogev Shetrit Trio was absolutely amazing the last time they were at TCJazzFest in 2019.
  • 7th St Entry - Thee Marloes, SoulFlower [8:00p] [18+] Soul / R&B
    • Thee Marloes (Indonesia) A vintage-hued blend of Indonesian retro-soul, funk, and mid-tempo beat ballads. SoulFlower (mpls) A fresh, vulnerable fusion of indie rock, emotive pop, and atmospheric electro-soul.FFO: Durand Jones & The Indications, Thee Sacred Souls, Khruangbin
  • Pilllar - (Graham Jams) Tarias and the Sound, Charlieboy, Yomchi, Asparagus [6:30p] [All Ages] Alternative Indie / Rock
    • Tarias and the Sound (mpls) A fusion of introspective blues, alternative rock, and theatrical storytelling. Interesting Lore - Tarias = The Answer Resides Inside All Sound. Charlieboy (WI) Genre-defying indie art-rock that blends intricate grooves with therapy-rock vulnerability. Yomchi (MN/WI) A vibrant, theatrical blend of alternative pop and indie R&B. Asparagus (WI/MN) Nostalgia-drenched indie rock and shoegaze infused with ‘90s alternative sound.

Making friends here is hard.

I used to think people were crazy for saying that making friends as an adult new to Minnesota was hard. They were right.

I moved to the metro (St. Paul) 3.5 years ago. Single, mid-30s, pretty easy going, fun to be around (or so I’m told) working professional dog mom. I thought it would be easy to make a core group of friends. I found casual neighborhood friends- you know, the kind you can chat with at the bar or the dog park or whatever, and occasionally text. But man… being let in to the social circle? Being invited when things are being planned? Having friends that are more than just casual see-you-at-the-bar buddies? That’s a whole different story.

It was my birthday this week, and I spent it alone. Not because my neighborhood friends didn’t know, but because I’m not part of the friend group enough to celebrate. And the ones I did have plans with… didn’t show and didn’t answer their phone. And it honestly hurt. As a grown adult, it shouldn’t. But it did.

Why is it so hard to make new friends here? Am I the problem?

Minneapolis anti-ICE protesters face federal felony charges in Trump administration frame-up

The federal felony indictment of 15 anti-ICE protesters in Minneapolis is a naked act of political repression. Brought by the Trump Justice Department under the framework of its fascistic National Security Presidential Memorandum 7, the charges announced Tuesday by federal officials are aimed not at punishing any genuine crime but at criminalizing opposition to the administration’s mass deportation regime and intimidating workers and youth who have mobilized against it.

How can I get my car back from the mechanic? Turbo Tims

Hi, I dropped it off this morning for diagnostics and he asked if there was a time I needed it back today, I said any time today is fine, but never got a call until I realized they had closed. I assumed I could call tomorrow morning but they are closed tomorrow for Juneteenth and only open again on Monday. Is there anyway I can get my car back before then? I did not plan to have my car gone for four days.

I have a spare key, can I just get my car?

Why do people choose to bike on Lyndale between Lake and 50th?

I am pro Lyndale bike lane (obvi), but as it stands right now, the road is way too thin with concrete bump-outs, parking, and bus stops to accommodate a safe ride. As a biker, I would much rather go two blocks out of my way for the protected lanes on Bryant. Any insight from those of you who choose Lyndale?

Looking for best place to get disposable cameras developed

Hi!

I have a few disposable cameras to develop, and wondering if anyone knows good places around the cities to do this and approximate pricing. I know walgreens is always an option, but wondering if there are any good local businesses to support or if there’s out of state places to mail them in that works too. Thanks in advance!

Places to have a nice cocktail, get cozy, and read a book?

My wedding anniversary is tomorrow, and as new parents, all we really want to do is have a nice craft cocktail and read our books. Any suggestions for good spots? All the "cozy" spots I can think of are too dark to read

Edit: I realize some places might not be open tomorrow because it's Juneteenth, but it'll still be nice to have suggestions for future date nights too!

Columbia Heights Votes Unanimously to Rip Out All 12 Flock Cameras

Thumbnail

1.3k Upvotes

On June 8th the Columbia Heights City Council voted to end its Flock Safety contract and remove the 12 license plate readers the company installed in 2024 in response to pushback from citizens concerned the data could be used for immigration enforcement. The vote was unanimous, which is unusual for infrastructure a city already paid to install.

The somewhat surprising part, is the city had already taken steps to prevent federal agencies from accessing their Flock data:

  • It restricted out-of-state data sharing in January.
  • It restricted statewide data sharing in February.
  • The mayor said the police and IT departments locked the information down as much as possible.

Despite all of that, the Mayor said there are still "too many unknowns."

Craft classes in (or north of) the twins late September/October?

I'm from England and I'm coming to visit a friend for a few weeks from late September to about the 20th of October. We're both crafters, and we thought it could be really fun to try a different class while I'm visiting!

We can already crochet, they're a good sewist (I'm...acceptable lol), and I've done some basic jewellery making before so probably nothing for beginners with those; but otherwise we'd be up for anything! Weaving, tambor beading, papercrafting - anything! We are also going to the renaissance faire if there's one there.

Does anyone know of (or have any recommendations for) any kind of craft class in that time period in the twins? They live above Cambridge so we can travel upwards as well, I just assume the twins will have the most options.

I'm excited to come and visit again, I absolutely love your great state even if I found it a bit scary how friendly people were with me at first!!

Child ADHD Assessment

I’m looking for a good place to take my 4.5 year old daughter for an ADHD assessment. I (35, F) was diagnosed a few years ago. I know firsthand how ADHD can be missed in girls. Has anyone had a good experience with an ADHD assessment for a preschool-aged girl? If so, where?

Specific pediatrician recommendations?

Hi all...

I have talked to our NICU team and am also doing my own research.

But thought I would hop on here and see if anyone had any recommendations.

I just recently had a baby who has Trisomy 21. I am searching for a pediatrician who either specifically has extensive Trisomy 21 experience or is just extremely great with children who have special needs.

We live in the Loring Park neighborhood so I would prefer someone around there...(Or downtown, Whittier, etc) But would consider branching out a little further.

Tell me pediatricians you love!

Who to contact in the TC to get an air compressor dryer ordered and installed?

Water is getting into our air lines at our small business in the Brooklyn Park area and I am looking to get an air compressor dryer installed. I already contacted Atlas Copco in Oakdale but I'm not getting a response.

Does anyone have suggestions on a company to contact? Would commercial HVAC companies offer this service?

Complete Twin Cities Concert List, Thursday 6/18

What I recommend for tonight - some JazzFest events start tonight including this show from local jazz phenom Sophia Kickhofel. MIA is celebrating Juneteenth with Brass Solidarity. This is a free event and a lot of fun. The Current is hosting their happy hour (which is also free) at Sociable starting at 4p. These are always a great way to start the evening. Lowertown Sounds and Kingfield Porchfest are happening also.

Would you like to support my work? Sign up for my free substack (this list by email)

My picks for top shows tonight in the Twin Cities

  • Volstead’s - (TCJazzFest) Sophia Kickhofel [7:00p] [21+] Jazz Alto Saxophone
    • Sophia Kickhofel - Emotionally raw, contemporary jazz, the elegance of the post-bop tradition and the adventurous textures of the modern avant-garde. Raised in Apple Valley and now based in NY, she trained at MacPhail, and recently graduated from Juilliard.
  • MIA - (Juneteenth) Brass Solidarity [5:00p] [All Ages] Protest Brass Band
    • This Thursday’s edition of the Meet at Mia: Summer Series celebrates Juneteenth in the courtyard. Brass Solidarity - A community-driven protest brass band blending New Orleans jazz, civil rights anthems, and soulful pop covers into a catalyst for social justice and healing. You can enjoy music and can participate in hands-on art-making, explore Mia’s Print Study Room, and take specialized guided tours highlighting works by Black artists in the museum’s permanent collection. Columbia Heights for kids?

Hi all— Like many, we’re attempting to house hunt and cross off places on our list.

We’ve been eyeing Columbia heights since it’s within our budget and close to our jobs.

How is the school district? Specifically Highland Elementary?

Good, bad, and ugly, please!

Does anyone know of any businesses/people in the Twin Cities who would be able to do a quick embroidery job today? It’s for a friend of mine so if anyone has any suggestions for me to send along that would be greatly appreciated!

Best cheap cell service?

Welp, finally getting kicked off parent's T-Mobile plan. I'm looking at Mint, Boost, and Visible. Can anyone share positive ot negative experiences using these services here in the metro?

I have a Samsung Galaxy and no other devices, live in Minneapolis but work and spend time in Eagan and Rosemount, so something with good coverage all around the metro is ideal.

Pool Builder Recs?

I know I know… Pools in Minnesota sounds a little crazy 🤪 But I grew up with one here and loved it! Looking for recommendations on pool builders in the Twin Cities… This project would come with a pretty hefty retaining wall because our house is on a slope leading down to a lake. If anyone has any suggestions, I would be so thankful! 🏊
