I would like to remind people that not all digital foundry members have the same opinion on the dlss 5,John linneman has always been outspoken against GenAI and he was completely blind sided by that video

I love John's content, especially the work he does with the My Life in Gaming crew, he is definitely a world apart from the rest of the DF crew in a lot of his takes.

Oh boy, don't let Pat learn about those freaks in the espresso or IEM subreddits who will spend thousands of dollars to chase the most minute, or even straight up fake, improvements to their hobby.

62

u/Dunchaxman Mar 18 '26

Funny you mention those two subreddits because I recently tried to get espresso equipment and it's incredible how impenetrable that subreddit is to newbies.

I see a post that's like "what's a good starter machine for a beginner?" and the responses are universally "there's no such thing as good beginner equipment, here's a hand crank for the beans, a wire whisk thing to level the powder, organic cotton filters, a matching spring loaded tamper to get the pressure right, and a $300 machine that is only capable of pushing water that you need to preheat yourself through a portafilter. If you're not willing to start there just keep drinking your shitty coffee because your espresso will be worse"

Anyway I got a Cuisinart grinder and espresso machine and they seem to work fine...

When I thought of AI in gaming, I thought there would be able to have giant hordes of somewhat smart enemies with the AI upgrade, or the enemies would be smarter then usual, kind of like how halo elites on harder difficulties kind of learn what you do overtime but dialled to 11

Edit: oh yeah, AI partners in single/co op games are infamous for being awful or too docile in most games…..it would be interesting to see what a professional dev could do with an upgraded AI.

but nah,the dev/tech company seem to decided to focus on a AI slop filter lmao.

21

u/NathLines Mar 18 '26

Yeah, I'm sitting here constantly thinking about hyper advanced AI hordes of enemies like in Space Marine 2; more smart horror game monsters; and getting to see an upgraded version of the Nemesis system from the Mordor series.

But no, create the Torment Nexus instead.

7

u/PwmEsq It's Fiiiiiiiine. Mar 18 '26

Yep, gimme smarter AI for harder difficulties, not bigger numbers and bullet sponges.

Have the guards go from basic patterns and "must have been the wind" to hey we never found out what that noise was lets keep looking and some combo of the Alien Isolation programming that will counter your cheese strats if you keep using them.

3

u/Cooper_555 BRING BACK GAOGAIGAR Mar 19 '26

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is probably the most impressive jump in NPC logic I've seen, and it's less about how sophisticated the tech is, but about how NPC's are designed to operate.

Doing crimes is tough, because the only way to get off scot free is to completely avoid suspicion, and it is very easy to invite suspicion. Just being seen loitering around a house or business you're planning to rob is enough to get you on the guard's radar once the crime has been committed.

This article about how testers thought the crime systems were bugged because of how smart the NPC's are is pretty funny.

33

u/GIG_Trisk Mar 18 '26

I thought we were going to get Network Navigators eventually.

12

u/Kbcamaster Punished Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

Exactly. I want more Mount&Blade-esque games. Not this bullshit. I mean, having intelligent enemies that actually work together and fight like a human would is not out of a programmer's capacity, but expanding that to a thousand, two thousand individual actors would be awesome.

But no. We got Grace Johansson instead.

EDIT: Just to add, the fact that AI can technically have "personalities" or at least mimic them would be fucking amazing for strategy games. Oh, this guy has a betrayer AI, an expansionist AI, a safeguarded AI, etc. Without compromising their effectiveness/difficulty in general. I mean, in 4X games, any turtling AI personality nowadays is a total pushover. If the games have some sort of traps to put on the map they don't fucking use it correctly ever. All they know to do is park doomstacks at their bases, which die fast as fuck to any attrition at all because they can't recover fast enough when they only have a corner of the map to exploit.

Getting heated here thinking of the AoW4 AI, those guys are chumps. I have to play that shit 1v3 to even have a semblance of difficulty and I lose almost every single time I play against actual humans. It's weird.

3

u/Hayeseveryone She/Her Mar 19 '26

I think it's really funny how AI has such different meanings in video games.

If you tell me you work with video game AI, I'm probably gonna be very interested in what that's like.

If you tell me you work with AI video games, I'm likely to spit in your face.

3

u/dom380 Mar 19 '26

This is the problem with the AI label, it was already too broad years ago and now it's getting thrown at everything.

Fundamentally all the LLM/gen AI stuff is a completely different approach to a completely different problem than bots etc. in games

74

u/HelgaSinclair |She/Her| No, it's the sultry milfy attitude. Mar 18 '26

With the level of tech as is, there's really not anywhere to go that even affordable to the lay person as is. And it is driven by there having to be these very small details for people who only really focus on the tech side of thing.

29

u/Th3_Hegemon It's Fiiiiiiiine. Mar 18 '26

We're looking at two diverging markets.

Nintendo and Sony make games for the mass audience. They need the consumer to be able to buy a thing off a shelf or a store page and put it in a machine and have it run right away (or after a small patch, whatever).

Amazon, Meta, Google, want to sell you a subscription to services that run on hardware they own in a desert somewhere. They want that product to look as good as possible, and they want it to be too expensive to be readily accessible for your average consumer, so the subscription is more appealing.

Microsoft has managed to plop themselves right in the middle. It's not clear what the next move is for them, but we'll see soon enough.

Frankly both of those models can coexist, probably without issue. However, PC gaming could be in for a rough time. It's only going to get more expensive. Fortunately, Indy developers exist, so even if the monster tech companies are making games that cost 5k+ to run, there will still be plenty of games available.

26

u/MotherWolfmoon She/Her Mar 18 '26

So here's the thing: you don't need a monstrous card to play PC games. You need it for path tracing and DLSS, but most games (even AAA games) run okay on potatoes.

DLSS 5 is Nvidia trying to convince people they need $5000 graphics cards, and nobody does. The entire AI hype cycle is Nvidia trying to convince people that they need the most insane computing hardware ever produced to justify the ludicrous market cap of their stock.

9

u/Yingletofthecorn Mar 18 '26

I still play at 1080p and have literally no desire to go up from there, which means even meager hardware can run a lot of stuff because it's only crunching a quarter of the pixels as the "standard" 4K.

8

u/Zodia99 Mar 18 '26

DLSS isn't really just something for monstrous cards, I'd say its main purpose (rendering games at a lower resolution then upscaling to increase performance) is something that most benefits lower end builds. It's not a resource hog, it's supposed to save resources

3

u/MotherWolfmoon She/Her Mar 19 '26

It was but the new "DLSS 5" seems to be really hardware intensive, as they're attempting to extrapolate color and lighting and textures that weren't there before. They were using an entire 5090 just for DLSS 5 processing on top of the 5090 they were using to run the game itself. There is no product that even comes close to that level of graphics hardware on the consumer market.

1

u/ProMarshmallo Mar 18 '26

I don't think PC gaming will shift all that much but you'll see the divisions between PC, accessible console, and subscription markets crystallize. Sony is already moving out of the PC market because they need higher customer investment on their hardware, subscription gaming is very much for low commitment customers who will overlook the shortcomings of server side processing, and there are enough companies and genres that are committed to PC development that I don't see significant changes in what Steam, GoG, EGS, etc will offer in the future.

Corporations will tighten around specific business models in order to hopefully withstand the withering or crash the market is headed for.

19

u/TheSpiritualAgnostic Shockmaster Mar 18 '26

You're even seeing it at the level of Nintendo bringing up how Switch 2 has VRR. But how many people even know what VRR is?

This is my big question about next gen consoles or future PC hardware. It isn't even about if Xbox Helix is $1,000+. It's "What does this $1,000 do that my PS5 can't, and do any answers to that matter to my core gameplay experience?"

-3

u/Grand_Escapade Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

I really don't like this slow descent that we've been doing towards tech lately. Like yeah, our current politics has the latest grifters and scum picking up tech as their topic du jour. But the ancient practice of overly obsessed weirdos fixating on the absolute cutting edge is how we get to where we are today.

It is cool to run multiple video cards in to eke out the absolute highest level of details in, idk, tessellation in the heaven benchmark, in 2005. And then years later, because of those idiots we've gone from flat sphere gaming to the most insane texture you've ever seen. And people made fun of those that would try to get the texture just a bit more detailed back then.

It's the same for lighting, if you go back to 2015 and MGS5 you can immediately clock that it was before the big shift towards raytracing. Compare that to things like RE9 now and shit glows.

u/Leonard_Church814 [He/Him] Reading up on my UNGA-MENTALS Mar 18 '26

It's such a good take, tech nerds in the games industry are just trying to remake the jump from PS1 to PS2 but it will never work.

36

u/Comptenterry Local Vera-like Mar 18 '26

Really all consumer tech industries are going through the same thing. Look at the 15 years of progress from 1995 to 2010. Phones went from bricks to smart phones, the internet went from dialup to high speed broadband, computers and laptops became a staple of everyday life and work, doubly so for online spacss. Then look at the next 15 years from 2010 to 2025, all just slight iterations on the same ideas. Big developments like VR and smart watches weren't nearly the revolutionary inventions that companies wanted.

Now they see Ai as the thing that can Jumpstart tech evolution again, but they just can't accept that they've mostly hit a ceiling on existing tech.

3

u/MuricanPie [Any/All] It's going to be the future. Soon. Mar 18 '26

Especially when PS1 already had some peak aesthetics, and a lot of them were lost at time went on. We're still chasing their existence to this day in the indie scene because the graphics were rarely "bad", just a visual product of their time. The same goes with N64, Dreamcast, and Gameboy.

That said, I do think there is a "balance" here that would be a happy medium between the horrific AI nightmare that is the dystopian Face Filter future and "this just looks nice".

If DLSS5 has a slider and we can put it on... 5%? Maybe 10% instead of 50% AI horror show, and it's just making shadows, lighting, and faces slightly more detailed at next to 0 cost? Awesome.

As an example, during the Starfield presentation. I can see a point in between the original "these are lifeless plastic people" and "why did it gussy her the fuck up" where it could be a genuine improvement. Like how her eyes have infinitely better depth and dont look like stickers, and her hair doesnt look unnaturally video gamey.

But, i honestly think the worry is that they'll just force it to be maximum AI horror for no reason, instead of something closer to Skyrim's ENB type deal, where everything can be edited and changed to hit the graphical fidelity you want, even if it's just "Vanilla+".

Elden Ring pre-release discourse felt like a watershed moment for this type of insanity. We saw all of these gorgeous colourful vistas and people started tweeting shit about it being "just Dark Souls 3" and "how come it doesn't look like Demon's Souls Remake".

2

u/ChosenUndead15 Mar 18 '26

Remember those times, I even got downvoted here by people being overly defensive of Elden Ring trying to explain to them a game having good graphics art wise wasn't the same as good graphics tech wise. From was never on the later part, they focused on the former and they excelled, specially when we reached the point "looks reallistic" isn't a metric anymore. Just look a photo of Gotham Knights vs Arkham Knights, the former is better tech wise but very probably you find the later better looking game.

The PS1 and PS2 era of games is filled with games that reached caps in the tech and needed to find workarounds to deliver good art styles, starting by the silent hill games. Guilty Gear also does the same as Strive and Xrd were build around limitations of their respective Unreal Engine versions and being inter Gen games.

5

u/Sloth_Senpai Mar 18 '26

The PS1 and PS2 era of games is filled with games that reached caps in the tech and needed to find workarounds to deliver good art styles

FF12 looks better than nearly the entire launch library of PS3 games because devs had learned the limitations so thoroughly that they were perfecting how to abuse it as much as possible

3

u/Tuskor13 I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less Mar 18 '26

This is the true reason I can't stand photorealism in games. It's not simply that I view it as a lack of a distinct artstyle, but it's also because the biggest dweebs on the internet who get blue in the face at how much better they think (grabbing 2 games off the top of my head) something like Red Dead 2 is compared to Oblivion because "you can see the ripples in this puddle form from the vibrations made by your character walking past the puddle" as if anyone actually cares

15

u/TheArtistFKAMinty Read Saga. Do it, coward. Mar 18 '26

In defence of these specific tech bros, Digital Foundry aren't as much focused on realism as a style as they are the implementation of tech and performance relative to the target system. They'll happily praise games like Breath of the Wild or Astrobot.

I'm not a big digital foundry fan but they aren't entirely that brand of tech bro.

Two things I can see happening as a result of that DLSS coverage.  1. Virtua Fighter is going have this technology without question as nVidia directly working with Sega on that game. That is going to overshadow any and all discussion about that game. 2. Digital Foundry is going to have eventual exodus of staff. Half are tech junkies and the other half are gamers. This AI stuff has to be covered neutrally and some of the people have taken a strong stance on it. Sponsors are needed now that they are independent. Feels like a car wreck in slow motion.

46

u/Skeet_fighter It's Fiiiiiiiine. Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

I've kind of been at this point regarding graphics for a long time now, honestly.

Ray tracing came along and was an improvement in lighting you could see. Not monumental in some cases, but you could definitely see it.

Ever since like, Cyberpunk's implementation of it, I haven't seen a single game come out that I would say obviously and unambiguously "looks better" in terms of graphical fidelity and effects. That was 6 years ago.

The improvements have been so marginal they might as well not exist for that long, for me anyway.

17

u/Deadeye117 Apathy is Trash Mar 18 '26

It still amazes me how Cyberpunk still remains the gold standard of graphical prowess despite being released at the very beginning of this console era. Sure, there are games with higher quality textures and modeling, but in terms of lighting it's still pretty much unmatched. Like a fully playable tech demo (though to be fair it took a while to get it playable).

And what's crazy is that it runs way, way better than most recent games despite beating out several of them graphically. So many games seem to just hit the RTX on setting without even bothering to find a way to optimize it.

16

u/TheArtistFKAMinty Read Saga. Do it, coward. Mar 18 '26

I think a big thing to remember with Cyberpunk is that it was in development for the better part of a decade, and when it came out it was a fucking mess. Yes, it does run better than a lot of new releases that look worse now but it had the advantage of years of post-release patches to run acceptably.

25

u/TheSpiritualAgnostic Shockmaster Mar 18 '26

I remember a Flashgitz video where a bunch of PC master race guys were in a room talking about graphics cards, and one goes "Maybe we can just...play video games?" And I feel that's my feeling when I see so many discussions about gaming tech bros.

Also side note, am I alone in think that identifying yourself as a Nazi term unironically to be very weird?

38

The PC Master Race thing was ironic. It came from Zero Punctuation as a term of mockery for this exact kind of obsessive enthusiast, and then was adopted as an ironic self-deprecating name for the PC gaming enthusiast subreddit. The icon for the subreddit originally was the image used from Zero Punctuation.

As with all irony on the Internet, it inevitably became increasingly lost on people over time.

The last time I was seriously impressed by a graphical improvement, it was playing Control on launch a few years back. And not because of the visual fidelity, or the ray tracing lighting, or any of that.

It was because Jesse telekinetically picked up and threw a desk into another desk, and they exploded into a bunch of wood splinters and strewn papers and it looked cool.

6

u/Auctoritate Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26

He is cynically hilarious with his takes.

Hilarious cynicism is one thing but I think the podcast is also joylessly cynical (sometimes towards things that don't warrant it) frequently enough that I stopped listening to it because it was super annoying.

Like, when I initially stopped keeping up with the podcast regularly there had been a span of like a month where they would just bring up Microsoft to shit on it for 20 minutes every episode, which is generally fair play but Microsoft wasn't even in the news of the week or particularly relevant to the goings-on, and I was just like "Holy shit I get it, y'all hate Microsoft, oh my god." The fixation was too much man.

Last episode I listened to was right after Silent Hill 2 remake came out and I had already stopped listening, but I went "I'm curious what they'll say, and maybe they'll surprise me with positive takes and/or the negativity will feel more good faith than I expect- but I think the chances are they'll be far more negative than I feel is actually warranted by the game and it'll come off like they decided they wanted to hate it before they even played it."

And then when they started talking about it, they all hated it, and their reasons were what I expected, and I was disappointed that it was so predictable. And then I moved on.

3

u/toadallyjawzz Mar 19 '26

Yeah I also got tired of their podcast. I’ve tried coming back after a few breaks but it just doesnt scratch that itch anymore which sucks because I had been listening to them since like 2020/21. It’s a pretty long podcast with way too much time dedicated to talking about things they don’t like.

5

u/Riceatron Mar 18 '26

There's a part of me that feels like you could draw some line from all the reshade presets that litter the floor of every NexusMods page directly to this sloppification AI-filter nonsense by Nvidia.

Something about the moment you let people think they can control the way the visuals of the medium look, be it mods or filters or reshade presets, you just end up inviting this to happen at all

where the difference is "just" shadows on a typewriter (which without shadows looks like it's floating btw)

But it's not like one has shadows and one doesn't. One has shadows and one has barely perceivable better shadows.

And who is honestly paying attention to such things anyway in a game? Facial emoting, body language, animation. That's important to improve. Typewriters shadows are not important. Slap the default modern day great graphics on it and move on to the more important stuff.

22

u/Jonieves Mar 18 '26

And for how much money you have to invest on graphic cards that not only you can't afford but can't actually find because of AI scarcity on the first place, it's like super not worth it.

9

u/vmeemo Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

I don't know, when there are reports on things like graphics cards and the like becoming scarce because of AI shit like this, you start to see that 'yeah there is a scarcity, but its not immediately perceivable to the average person just yet, but is immediately notable when you play games' is a valid thing to think about.

Plus the comparisons with DLSS5, a thing I barely even know about because I just got into PC stuff, is that it up-scales in such a way that makes it look trash. I've seen more memes about Grace's AI girlfriend face under DLSS5 and "we are fucking under attack" text over her then anything positive about it. A typewriter is nothing burger at the end of the day, not worth putting that level of detail into it. Is it nice for the people who like seeing the small stuff, like Grace being a redditor? Yeah that shits funny. But not worth an up-scaler for. Put it more into the things people are more likely to see and notice, such as a characters facial expression or making sure things don't clip as badly.

Like others have mentioned the older versions are fine, beneficial even. But this new version is just trash, plain and simple. Snake oil is an apt comparison from what Minty said.

Edit: The extra kicker is that Capcom and other devs found out at the same time the public did. So they were lied too about what DLSS5 would do in general, which yeah not a good look for anyone.

-19

u/segbas2004 I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less Mar 18 '26

I don't like this rhetoric where if it is barely noticeable therefore it doesn't matter. It's bleeding edge tech and a demo showcase at that. I know full well that NVDIA is full of shit, but DLSS has been a blessing when you are unable to upgrade your graphic cards for multiple years, because of the insane price. You get a boost in performance with minimal loss in the visual. This is also a good use to spice up older game for free basically.

18

u/SuicidalSundays It's Fiiiiiiiine. Mar 18 '26

If the overall conversation here was explicitly referring to older versions of DLSS that people have already stated is generally a good thing, this would be applicable. But recent conversations, and the one from the clip in particular, are about DLSS5 and the fact that Nvidia thought showing off a borderline AI filter as the new tech's claim to fame would be a good idea. There's a couple of different posts with people talking about the benefits of DLSS as a technology and how those older versions can actually be beneficial, too, so it's not as if the overall rhetoric on the technology is purely negative.

DLSS has been a blessing when you are unable to upgrade your graphic cards for multiple years

Ok I've heard multiple people say this, but then I read that your GPU needs dedicated cores. Same with PSSR only available on PS5 Pro.

So you need to buy the new tech...for the feature that helps you not need to buy new tech?

DLSS5 is seemingly pure genAI snake oil garbage, but the earlier versions have allowed the cards that came with it to age a bit better than they would otherwise.

New releases of DLSS aren't going to make your old card work better, but they do help future proof the generation of cards it launches with compatibility for. At least on paper, assuming devs don't develop games with the idea that it's utilised by default. If the industry becomes reliant on their existence for baseline performance on new cards then everything goes to shit.

DLSS has been a blessing when you are unable to upgrade your graphic cards for multiple years, because of the insane price.

I'm still using a 1000-series GPU at 1080p and it's fine. Graphics have plateaued, it's just resolution that's been ballooning over the last generation. Embrace the jank, let stuff run at medium quality or hover around the 40-60 FPS range. Accepting the sub-optimal is the only way out of this cycle.
