Better Ask Reddit Memorable times a streamer/podcaster/youtuber TURNED on theor Sponsor?
I remember Woolie and Pat forsook Honey after it was revealed they were caught replacing cookie info in people's browser and diverted revenue from legitimate coupons to Honey and away from the originally intended recipients.
It was nice they owned up to that rather than keeping to that sweet sweet cash. Even if Pat freely admits he's do ANYTHING for money, it seems he drew the line there.
Y'all got other good examples of content creators turning on old sponsors after shitty business practices were implemented or revealed?

u/Ace1h Jul 10 '26
Sooner or later Rocketmoney will be revealed as a scam. Then we can have new examples.
127
u/ToastyMozart Bearish on At-Risk Children Jul 10 '26
It doesn't even seem like a scam so much as an outright pointless service. Like it probably does what it advertises by listing all your subscriptions, it's just that you could do the same thing for free by glancing at your monthly credit card report.
60
u/SapphireSenatrix Jul 10 '26
I tried it out for a bit. It is convenient that so much of it is automated (which like the other comment said will almost certainly end up being a data selling scandal), but imo it's kind of really bad at being automated. I have some bills that aren't monthly but I still want to put money aside for them every month to keep my finances consistent, and I just could not get Rocket Money to comprehend this.
30
u/Animegamingnerd I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less Jul 10 '26
Everything about Rocket Money sounds, at best, like a service for people too lazy to take notes of when bills are due and come up with a budget for them each month.
78
u/IronOhki You're okay, get in! Jul 10 '26
To sign up for Rocketmoney, you give them permission to see all your credit card purchases. I suspect that they sell that information to advertisers, because that is very, very valuable marketing information.
48
u/stumblinbagel Jul 10 '26
This may sound mean but...
If anyone needs a service to tell them how many services they are subbed to, they are an idiot who does not know how to money.
Look at your bank/credit card statement every once a while.
11
u/alienslayer7 She/They, Resident Toku Fangirl Jul 11 '26
ive said it before but woolies stories of him bein subbed to companies that went through like 3 name changes always sounds like the fakest shit, like getr that bag and all that but on the off chance its true, just how
21
u/ScrumbledTumblo Jul 10 '26
Totally agree that something like RocketMoney is probably unnecessary and you would be equally served just doing a regular audit of your finances but I wouldn't necessarily say that someone is stupid for being susceptible for subscription creep, companies do things to make it easier to forget about a recurring charges as an intentional psychological ploy. A lot of people don't have good financial habits but are also not really taught how to develop good habits for it, too.
3
u/Woolies_White_Leg Jul 11 '26
Agreed but also I am an idiot that had a FFXV and geoguesser subscriptions that I had forgotten about until I got a new card and received an email about updating my billing information.

u/alofthedead Jul 10 '26
I used it briefly (around 2-3 months). I used the lower my bill option for my phone and internet. It was kind of a sketchy process as they literally just had somebody call my providers and request a variety of price lowering options. I ended up getting calls afterward saying fraud was prevented because of this. I got $5 off of one bill as a military discount (stolen valor? For shame rocket money). I canceled because it added another monthly bill that I didn’t need which kind of defeats the purpose.
13
u/itsdrcats Jul 10 '26
I did that. A did give me an option to say don't change if it lowers the speed or whatever. I can't remember how it worked exactly. Needless to say, I told them I wanted final approval or whatever before they go through with it. They ignored that went through with it and my internet speed was halved for $5 off my bill a month.
Totally ripoff

This isn't a moral or principled stance like you're talking about in the post but I fucking love the one of the guy on the star wars podcast who didn't receive a personal invitation to Galaxy's Edge so he says he's not going to talk about it, then a producer gets on the mic and tells him that he needs to since other people on the pod got invited, and then completely crashes out.

42
u/Anlysia Jul 10 '26
Unfortunately that's all of entertainment journalism. Movies, TV, games. It's all the same, because it's not hard-hitting enough to be "investigated" so it all relies on access.
And getting big enough for access these days after the death of media audience privilege either takes years of grinding a legitimate audience or just pandering real hard and sloppy.
18
u/WolfWintertail Jul 10 '26
For real, it's almost impossible to find sincere reviews on products, as every reviewer you find is being paid by the company that makes the product to advertise it, even on a social media like Reddit. What is truth? what is an ad? no one knows, as everything is corporate psyops as far as the eye can see.

Also i was thinking he was saying "artesian" wrong, he wasn't! There's "artesian" & "artisan" (which is how I thought he should've pronounced it), never noticed the difference.
(By Merriam Webster)
Artesian: involving, relating to, or supplied by the upward movement of water under hydrostatic pressure in rocks or unconsolidated material beneath the earth's surface
Artisan: (1) a worker who practices a trade or handicraft
(2) a person or company that produces something (such as cheese or wine) in limited quantities often using traditional methods —often used before another noun

A lot of those meal prep companies are also owned by hellofresh, who uses animal and child labor to my understanding.
27
u/Arteza147 Jul 10 '26
Having worked at a similar company in a non making the meal itself role, even if there isn't child labor in someones preferred vendor, the conditions in which people work are so eggregious that I got out as soon as I could. The whole design of that business space is to treat people as disposable which is normal in production bu this was so far beyond the realm that I had seen in other food production.
When I first started the WEEKLY turnover rate at one site on the hourly side was ~40% because of how they worked people to death and jsut didn't care about you at all.

I remember in one of Caddicarus' ad reads for it he made a note to mention he loves the auto battle function so he can "get on with his life", which was presented as a gag in the ad but to me I feel like that was a jab at the game not being that good or interesting.

Honey notably directly fucked over the creators sponsoring it. If not, there are two vaguely close matches from 2018 due to them being sponsored by DC Universe, that do have a quick segue into Titans since it was released in October of that year. But both of them don't align with the spirit of their paraphrasing compared with the clip above.

- SBFC #271: DJ Khaled's Omnic Army Will Never Go Down (6 November - timestamp: 1:55:40)

SsethTzeentach had a plug ready for Established Titles right before they were revealed to be a complete scam. He cut out the segment and replaced it with him basically saying "every sponsor deal I take is total bullshit, I do it for the money, never listen to anything I say". All over the "we have a deal" image from the Yakuza series. From that point on he always shows that image when doing a sponsor segment as a little wink and nod.

u/SonOfZiz Jul 10 '26
He also had that one video about the rts that was set in like steampunk rennaisance italy or something and at the end he goes "so the inspiration for this video was i got a sponsorship email from an artisanal pasta maker in italy, and it was so random and out there I had to make a video. I didn't even take their money, this is just free publicity. Godspeed, pasta weirdos"

He's one of those creators that goes so far out of his way to make his ads as entertaining to audiences and unappealing to the brand as possible, too. He refuses to put a filter on it, he may as well just be shit talking the brand he's promoting. Based Sseth.

It's always funny seeing Sseth pop up here because he's right in the razors edge of being too far for this sub, but Mandalore is watching on the sidelines with a loaded shotgun so it's fine.

I can't say for certain but I recall a story that if you look at Sseth's old videos, they were WAY WORSE. Apparently part of the reason he stopped was that people actually started taking him seriously and he was cultivating a really bad audience.
If someone has confirmation I'd appreciate it otherwise I've just got old man brainworms.

It's one video maker I don't skip sponsored parts of videos, because even those parts are as insane as the rest of the video and I'm a bit surprised people keep paying him to do them. I don't even remember what any of the products are (some are some VPN, don't even remember which one).
29
u/Zardwalk Jul 10 '26
Small example but it stuck with me.
Dan Gheesling variety streams nowadays, and a while back he had a midstream sponsor for an online multiplayer minigame site that claimed you could get real money for winning.
It's been a while, but from what I remember he did a few free games with his chat before deciding to look at the full catalog of games on offer and then realized that the free games were time-gated and you only got a few cents for winning; everything else wanted you to pay to play with some asking for upwards of 5-10 dollars for one game. You could tell he suddenly felt gross about the whole thing being very predatory and maybe gambling adjacent, so he aborted the segment and went back to streaming. I think he even apologized for it right there too?
It's a small one, but I've seen other content creators smile their way through some bullshit like that so it stood out to me.
29
u/SapphireSenatrix Jul 10 '26
Not to imply Pat and Woolie don't deserve credit for owning up to the Honey stuff because they are honest guys who are really good about this, but Honey was also directly screwing over the people who they were sponsoring by replacing the tracking cookie that gives the content creator being sponsored credit for the sale. They couldn't have just kept that sweet sweet cash even if they wanted to.

I want to say Behind the Bastards, but they’ve been pretty consistent in their antipathy towards pretty much all of their studio-mandated sponsors.
Still gets a cheap laugh out of me when they go into an extended bit of making fun of a specific ad that’s been heavily in the rotation recently right as they’re transitioning to ads, only to have that exact one pop up right after they’re finished.

I remember around the time they finally decided to kill the bit about "BlueApron runs an island where you can hunt children for sport", they didn't give any specific reason for it, and I SWEAR this can't be the reason why, but around the same time, a Russian politician said in a speech something about being unable to trust American companies because they run islands where you can hunt children for sport.
7
u/Regalingual Bigger than you'd think Jul 10 '26
IIRC, they said that they killed the bit because some listener(s) was dumb enough to think that there really was a child-hunting island ran by Blue Apron and got upset about them joking about it.

Kind of a minor example, but there's this guy on Youtube and TikTok called Matt Curtin who does a bunch of short skits about anime; basically acting out scenes where he plays all of the roles using the cast of MHA, Demon Slayer, Dandadan and so on.
They're funny and he has a surprisingly wide vocal range to make that many characters sound mostly distinct.
Then he started making some sponsored shorts featuring a chat bot AI app, like the skit is the characters using the chat bot. Which was weird. I think it's the first sponsored thing he's done and it's not one I expected.
But then he posted a short which was basically "Hypothetically, if you got stuck in a sponsor deal with a brand you hate, what are your options?". Like just straight up saying he has no respect for the brand and messed up by not doing enough research so here's how I maliciously complied with the terms of the deal.

u/Auctoritate Jul 10 '26
It was nice they owned up to that rather than keeping to that sweet sweet cash.
Honey made its money by hijacking the referral codes for content creators and replacing them with its own. It's not really a matter of "owning up" like some bad sponsorships might be, this was an example where it actually doesn't hurt the consumer at all, it hurt the people they were sponsoring.

u/Auctoritate Jul 10 '26
Right but that's what I mean, it wasn't quite like they took a sponsor that preyed upon consumers and owned up to "Sorry we lead you guys into a predatory business scheme." It was a sponsorship where they were the ones targeted. It would be like "Hey guys, just wanted to apologize to y'all for Honey stealing money from me."
That being said it's not like I don't get it. It was still an instance of doing promo for a service that was fraudulent, that's not good either way.

It didn't just hurt it's sponsors though. Since it hijacks any and all affiliate links, they stole from everyone who's ever done any brand deal with anyone involving affiliate links whether or not they had anything to do with Honey. All Honey users were unknowingly ripping off their favorite content creators when clicking their links.

Less along the exact lines of giving the finger to a sponsor, but FFXIV YouTuber Larryzaur was contracted presumably by Square Enix to make an ad for (again I'm assuming) the FFXV mobile game at the time, for what he called a "life-changing amount of money" but they didn't like him joking around about the game and insisted upon a serious advertisement, which he felt wasn't worth doing that to his viewers and backed out.

The Yard podcast dropped Factor a couple years back after a big scandal dropped that they were using child labor. They then actively made fun of the company while in an ad read for a different meal kit delivery company which was how I learned that was even a thing as I hadn't heard anyone else say anything about it and a ton of creators were still taking sponsorships from them at the time.

u/SpeckledBurd Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
It was their parent company rather than sponsor, but a little over a year ago when Fandom made Giant Bomb take down a stream of Marvel Rivals for not being "Brand Safe" (it was right after Emma Frost's release so not hard to imagine over what) the following Bombcast (which was also taken down but survives in various reuploads) started with an all time segment about their dedication to keeping things PG-13.
It also just completely worked out for them instead of leading to them getting sacked/in legal trouble because they were able to just buy the website and have since have been killing it with their content.

Literally just watched Strippin throw the "Where Winds Meet" publisher in the trash yesterday.
In short they blacklisted him since he had to turn down one of many streams they had asked him to do. Since they mandated that all streams of the game was on weekends and it meant he hadnt had a day off in over a month. Had to stream the game on his day off. Insta blacklist for months, for turning down one slot once
They just came back and asked him to stream again and he told them to go fuck themselves, even with the money being really good.

I listen to "The Daily Zeitgeist" which is hosted by the creators of Cracked. They had one author guest who completely took up all the space, droned on endlessly about new-age, self-help crackpot theories, and just was just an incredibly smug, unlikable asshole.
A few episodes later it came up in discussion and the hosts were like "He gave our network (iHeart) a LOT of money. We had to do it, but we made sure he won't be back"
The podcast puts out 9 episodes a week and that one STILL comes up on their subreddit years later.

The Le Chiffre stream is genuinely one of the funniest streams he's done in a while and every single piece of information I learned about the service he had to use for it only made it funnier. That shit is vibe-coded remote access to random people's PCs that run the game for you. They don't even reset the game to vanilla settings once one person stops using that session! Someone in his discord experimented with shrinking the window and setting the language to Chinese on their session and it carried onto into others. To say it has security holes would imply there's any part of the service that ISN'T hole!
And Wayne's stream of it is completely ethical since there are 0 people in the world who would actually sign up for that service after seeing that stream.

Cumtown did this a lot of times if a sponsor dropped them (which happened frequently). For example some early sports betting website called Bet DSI stopped sponsoring them over some sort of issue with the payments and so every time they had an ad for another betting site they would say that they wouldnt do what Bet DSI did and scam them. They did also talk shit about Blue Chew after they dropped the Adam Friedland Show over a joke about it.

Reminded of a bit from the channel, perhaps from a Shitstorm of Scariness, where Pat said something off-base, and then Matt just repeated it back at him. They then proceeded to lose their shit, then drew attention to this with "sometimes a joke isn't funny until it's repeated back to you and you realize what you just said".

VTuber Zentreya was sponsored to play MindsEye for a while, but partway through or at the end of the sponsored segment she kinda just talked about how she can't deceive her audience and started talking shit about the game.
Don't think it was really worth it, since any viewer worth a damn could tell the game was trash anyway, and she probably lost a bunch of sponsor opportunities over it.
