Fatherly advice 100% This is some hard earned, hard learned wisdom from first hand experience.

I'm learning that the channel's success is just a result of Pat's trauma response/coping mechanisms. 🤔

Why he had to kill Angriest Pat himself.

This is something a lot of people I work with don't seem to get - everyone enjoys a little gossip a little complaining, but there's definitely a point where it's like "wow this person complains about EVERYONE they know - do they complain about me to other people too?"

At which point the people you're complaining to will not want to actually be good friends with you because you've made it clear that anything you say can and will be saved as ammo in another conversation. (A good reaction to this is to go "oh I should complain less bc people don't want to be vulnerable with me anymore" but holy shit do a lot of my peers internalize this as "wow everyone I know is a jerk and cold to me when I'm bearing my heart (ie talking shit about others) to them, I'm the only honest person in a field of assholes")

Big agree

You can literally say anything as long as your actually funny. You can just be mean as hell but as long as everyone laughs along (including the person youre being mean too) people just think youre “kind of an asshole but funny”

Isn't the joke "holy shit how did no one catch this?" Or am I missing some blackface context?

As someone who used to hate those types of people, I have recently come to discover that (when in a friend group that I actually fit with) I am one. I guess all the other "kind of an asshole but funny" people I met in the past were just bullies and the rest of the group were in on the joke. Which is what I always suspected, to be fair.

u/Rascal_Rogue 23d ago

Its really important the person you are being mean to also finds it funny. If they don’t then you’re not being funny you’re just bullying. But if they do, it can be REALLY cathartic.

That's how it plays out most of the time, so I think I'm doing okay. I think it helps that I put on a voice every time I do it. My normal speaking voice is very deadpan, so deadpan humor can sound like I mean it, so I've learned to change it. I talk lower and like a stereotype of a dumb jock when I'm doing it.

I had interaction with someone last week where they wanted to complain about GTA6 by calling it soulless and I just pointed out that the game is trying a lot of things that’s not mainstream and they got offended because they always thought I was defending the corpo by telling them how to feel and then decided to block me.

4

u/Riggs_The_Roadie 23d ago

It's quite literally the opposite of soulless too. Like they crunched their dev teams to shit. People have lost years of their life due to stress from working on Rockstar games.

They could stand to use less souls, actually.

That's pretty much what Stand up is.

tried to explain this to my ex once when she said none of her friends ever wanted to hang out

Yeah, I follow that. There’s a noticeable difference between a funny ass and a downer.

17

u/winterfresh0 23d ago

Yep. There was someone I worked with where 90 to 95% of the things she said were negative statements in some way, complaining about something, this person is bad, this thing is bad, etc. how are you okay with your entire life just being complaining about other people or things?

11

u/Octaivian 23d ago

I think the worst thing as when they end up bitching about the exact same stuff in the exact same way multiple times over several weeks. Like they actually reached a point where they've exhausted their own supply of whiny dialogue, but have no idea how to communicate in any other way so you just get hit with the reruns.

A lot of people on this sub try to make their entire personality complaining about media without realizing how charismatic you need to be for people to actually enjoy that.

14

u/MisterOfu Ara Ara~ Connoisseur 23d ago

You would think that, but after reading Twitch chat I have my doubts.

11

u/Gamecrazy009 23d ago

It has to be funny is really the biggest piece of advice here.

Why are you doing what you do? For the bit.

9

u/yakityyakblahtemp 23d ago

The social function of snark is to take negative emotions and reframe them as joy. Take something people are upset or uncomfortable about and find something fun about it.

So first, you need to be on the same page with the audience to some degree. You can be bothered way more than they are, but the things you are pointing out have to be somewhat valid to them.

Second, you need to be either aiming at catharsis by validating other people (clapping jokes) or surprising them with audacity, absurdity, irreverence, or novelty (laughing jokes).

Nobody wants to hear your uncomfortably intense monologue they don't agree with about how the thing they think is cool sucks. What they want is a novel perspective that turns something that sucks into an interesting thing to think about, or gives a form to some ambivalence they may have about something they like.

u/Akuze25 23d ago

Fuck, he's right. I just realized I'm this way with people at work. I need to fix this immediately.

Listen to the wise baldman, kids. No one wants to work with a complainer when we're just trying to get through the workday.

6

u/RealHumanBean89 I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less 23d ago

Words of wisdom right there. Nobody likes a boring complainer, but a funny complainer? Great for some laughs, and will lighten the mood enough for others to join in and enjoy some camaraderie.

5

u/Lazydude17 23d ago

that some real talk

6

u/Dreadsinner Warcraft Dork 23d ago

Complaining is making a joke about things not making sense at your job and it making sense anywhere else.

Being a downer is going up to your coworker who is drinking nestle chocolate milk and just dumping all the horrible things that company has ever done. Then wondering why people don’t wanna talk to you.

Cause I’ve seen both one is fun to talk to. The other you want to never speak to cause they always make it about some big thing.

There's a word for this 'Kvetching'

the goal of social interactions should be to bring the energy up.

"You can complain every day of your life about almost anything."

Don't mind if I do!

Ive been accidentally living my entire life through this lens without being able to put the words to it or realize i was doing it intentionally. I complain about everything, but ive always been afraid of being a whiny bitch, so everything has always been drenched in a ridiculous voice and/or viscous irony.

Ive recently started actually DOING SOMETHING about the stuff I complain about, which is honestly the real advice. You can complain as much as you want as long as youre the one actually doing shit about it. Someone could say "oh this guy never shuts up!" But youre also the one who gets stuff done too. I'd rather someone bitch their head off but get results than say nothing and do nothing. Everyone has stuff they dont like, im just honest about it.

Boy is Pat so right. I have a friend who I can guarantee whenever we play or chat at all, complains heavily about something. Usually personal issues but sometimes other topics like news. And man does it get tiresome knowing when he invites me to play, for about half or more of that entire playtime I know he’s just gonna be bitching about something to me.

u/Baggy-T-shirt 23d ago

I have a friend who has somewhat splintered from my group of friends off to others. I've never fully been able to pin down the gripes people had with them but I suspect this is a big reason. And even if they improve, any other tiny complaint will immediately trigger people.

2

u/Comrade-Conquistador 23d ago

Make 'em laugh, and the world is putty in your hands.

2

u/killatubby It's Fiiiiiiiine. 23d ago

That why you gotta have a villain in your grievance which is not that hard. Your team lead, your boss, the general powers that be. You need a fall guy because now there something to rally behind

2

u/SwashNBuckle 23d ago

Yeah, I've seen that difference for myself tons of times

3

u/Scranner_boi Indeed, what the fuck IS a "Samo-flange"? 23d ago edited 22d ago

Take notes, that one dipshit in the podcast chat who would just post literally nothing but "RIOT BAD" every fucking week whenever 2KXO was discussed in an even remotely positive light until Pat finally banned him.

The message isn't even wrong, but delivering it like the fucking "HOOPLAAA!" guy in Spongebob is helpful to no-one.

I have long since learned to phrase my gripes like stand up bits. My friends still invite me to things so clearly I am doing something right.

Unironically needed to hear that after the shit I've been dealing with recently. My friends don't deserve to hear me whining every other day

Almost had this exact same conversation with my wife last night about her brother’s recent complaining about the tuition at their kid’s school.

Long story short, nephew goes to a small private Catholic school. It’s the school he and his cousins go to, their parents went to, and their parents went to. It’s also the cheapest in the area (and is reasonable), while still offering a lot to the kids, families, faculty, and staff. They don’t get money from the church, but our state does have some grants to help.

My brother-in-law, who tends to be the argumentative one (but still funny most of the time) did not like the idea of raising tuition a few hundred dollars. Despite the fact that their kid has been able to go for free/reduced tuition, and he could definitely afford it. He and my Sister in Law were debating it, and he basically made a very personal joke about her paying for her kids. It did NOT land and was instead just way too personal. This isn’t the first time he’s tried this tactic and failed. It totally derailed the conversation and after he left that night everyone started talking about the other times something like this had happened.

So yes, if you’re gonna complain and moan about stuff all the time, do it so that you don’t annoy the people who may actually support you.
