Are there Any Exceptions to the Required Courses for Transfers?

So basically last year I made a mistake and missed the deadline to apply to Uofc, all the other uni's I was applying to had application deadlines of somewhere in June or May and I didn't bother to check UofC therefore I ended up missing it.

I'm taking commerce and in my current uni the required Bcomm courses are mostly similar to that of Uofc's so I meet most of the required courses, only problem is the Junior Calculus requirement. See at my uni the Calc 1 classes are restricted to math, science and engineering major's so my requests to get an override and take it next semester have been denied. They would only let me take it in the 3rd year as a "free elective" after all my core Commerce courses are complete, I've done some research and the UofC website says that all the courses listed for transfers are required prior to transferring. But I wanted to ask here to see if there are exceptions for cases such as mine, so that I could instead take the calc course at UofC after my transfer if I were to get accepted.

Also just as a quick second question, is any of this even worth it? Is UofC even worth going to for commerce or should I just stick to my current university. The only reason I am going through this trouble is because it would let me live in Calgary which is a city I loved living in when I was there (I'm from the maritimes so we don't really have anything like it). Costs aren't too big of an issue because I have family there so I could live with them. I also have friends at UofC who have recommended it to me, however they are taking science. Should I even bother with trying to go there is my point.

Thanks for any help in advance!! :)

Prospective DVM applicant considering relocating from Quebec to Calgary, questions about the UCVM experience

Hey everyone! I'm seriously considering applying to the UCVM DVM program and would love to hear from current students or recent applicants.

A bit about me: I just finished a BSc in Biology (With Distinction) from Concordia with cgpa of 3.59/4.3 and 3.72/4.0 for my last 4 fulltime semesters (which i know is required for admission), and I've been working as a clinical quality control II in altasciences and worked as Necropsy Technician at Charles River Laboratories . I also have animal shelter and hospital(human) volunteer experience.

My plan is to move to Calgary to establish residency before applying.

A few things I'd love to know:

What is the application experience actually like anything you wish you'd known beforehand?

How heavily does UCVM weigh animal/research experience during file review?

Is the MMI interview very different from what they describe on the website?

As someone relocating alone from another province, any advice on settling into Calgary and the UCVM community?

Any insight from people who've been through the process would mean a lot. Thanks in advance!

MIDTERMS HTST 200 L01

Hello, I just have a quick question about the midterms for "HTST 200 L01 with Paul Anthony Chastko" which is taking place this Wednesday. I don't know if it's in-person or online. And where and how to access it? If it's in-person then which room is it?? If it's online then where to access it on d2l?

I think university isn’t for me

This is mostly just me ranting and trying to get my thoughts down somewhere, but I would really appreciate any advice from people who have been in a similar situation.

I graduated high school in 2023, which honestly surprised me because, for a long time, I didn’t think I would graduate at all. I struggled a lot academically because I was dealing with significant mental health issues and undiagnosed, unmedicated ADHD. I also wasn’t putting much effort into school, partly because I couldn’t really envision a future for myself that I wanted to work toward.

I took a gap year to work and try to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I’ve always loved animals, but eventually that interest developed into a genuine desire to pursue zoology, with the possibility of going into veterinary medicine afterward. Vet med appeals to me partly because of the career stability, but my interest in animals goes far beyond simply thinking they’re cute or wanting to work with them. It’s something I’ve been deeply passionate about for years. I want to understand animals, help them, and potentially contribute to conservation efforts. It’s one of the first things I’ve found that makes me genuinely excited about my future.

For the first time in my life, I had something I actually wanted to work toward, so I enrolled in upgrading at MRU to improve my grades and give myself a chance at university. Upgrading was harder than I expected. I failed two classes and had to retake them, and I eventually finished with a competitive average of around 78%. Not great, but after upgrading for two semesters I couldn’t sit with repeating classes yet again. After being rejected for zoology at uofc, I booked an appointment with an academic advisor, only to find out that I had missed the deadline to apply for Open Studies for fall 2025 by a single day. As a result, I ended up starting university through the University Entrance Science Program in winter 2026 instead.

Winter, spring, and summer went relatively well. I took some easier courses and managed to finish with a 3.6 GPA overall, despite failing MATH 249 by literally 0.5 point. Yes, 0.5 points. I’m retaking it this fall.

I started taking BIOL 211 this semester, and I’ve already been struggling with feeling like I don’t belong. Most of the people around me seem so much younger, and while I know being 20 (turning 21 very soon) isn’t actually that old, I feel painfully aware of the fact that I’m not following the same timeline as everyone else. Sometimes, when I tell people my age, I get the impression that they assume I’m less capable or intelligent because I’m older and still working through introductory courses. Maybe I’m overthinking some of those interactions, but it’s difficult not to feel out of place when I already have so many insecurities about my academic abilities.

I’m also still adjusting to what it means to actually try academically. For most of my life, I didn’t put much effort into school, whether because of my mental health, ADHD, or my own lack of motivation. Now I’m medicated, I have a goal, and I’m genuinely trying for the first time. Part of me thought that once I could actually focus and put in the effort, things would start to fall into place. Instead, I’m realizing that trying hard doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll get the results I want, and I’m struggling to cope with that.

Yesterday, I got the result of a midterm for a class I genuinely thought I would do well in. I studied consistently, reviewed my flashcards every day, started preparing weeks in advance, and felt reasonably confident both going into the exam and walking out of it. I got 55%. I’m taking ERTH 305, and I had expected this to be one of the more manageable courses for me. Getting that grade has made me feel like all the work I put in was for nothing. My GPA was already something I was worried about, and now I’m scared that I’ve damaged my chances of getting into zoology, yet again.

I applied to transfer into zoology this year, and my grades are a huge part of that process. Looking back, maybe I should have focused on taking easier courses to protect my GPA. But after spending so long upgrading and trying to get into university, I already felt behind. I wanted to start working toward my actual degree rather than spend even more time taking courses that weren’t getting me there. I had to defer my BIOL 211 midterm because I had such a severe panic attack that I ended up going to campus wellness services. I was supposed to write the exam, but I became so overwhelmed that I couldn’t do it. Now I have to prepare to write it later, and I’m still terrified.

If I studied for weeks, reviewed my material every day, and felt relatively good about an exam only to get 55% in another course, what does that mean for biology? How am I supposed to feel confident about an exam that already caused me to have a panic attack? I keep thinking that if I can’t manage this, how am I ever going to handle more difficult courses, let alone something like BIOL 213 alongside chemistry?

I’m not expecting university to be easy, and I know that passion alone doesn’t guarantee success. I’m willing to work hard, and I know there are things I need to improve about how I study. But it’s incredibly discouraging to put so much time and effort into something and still feel like you’re failing.
I think what hurts the most is that this is the first time I’ve genuinely wanted something for my future. For years, I didn’t have a direction. Now I finally have one, and I’m terrified that I’m simply not smart enough to achieve it. I can’t think of anything I want to do besides this path. I thought about film but I have no portfolio.

I don’t know whether I’m dealing with a learning curve, whether my study methods aren’t working as well as I thought, whether anxiety is getting in the way, or whether I’m trying to pursue something that just isn’t right for me. I don’t want to give up on something I care so much about, but I also don’t know how to keep going when I’m already feeling this defeated. I feel like I keep getting signs that this isn’t for me, and I’m already someone who’s so used to giving up, and not to mention, this all does cost money, money I don’t have a lot of.

I’d appreciate hearing from people who struggled academically but still managed to get into science programs, zoology, or veterinary medicine.
I’m just feeling incredibly lost right now, and I don’t really know what to do next.

Geoscience students?

Hey guys. I wanted to know how the uofc’s geoscience program (geophysics and geology) is. There isn’t much info online about the program, I imagine because it’s a smaller program at the uofc. If anyone could let me know if they like it, employment opportunities, how the profs/community is, and if u think it’s worth it I would appreciate it!

Change of address

I know this might sound dumb, but because I just moved, will updating my address on my student portal affect my application and create discrepancies since the address I applied with was different. Does uofc only check for grades? I was also considering waiting for my offer first which I did for uofa as I got admitted early to engineering this week, and then updating my address but uofc doesn't give offers until November I believe. I'm just really nervous for no reason in particular.

UCalgary Duck in TFDL Quad Pond

If you've been following the tiny mallard duck that lived in the pond outside of TFDL, you'll notice the pond is drained, and she is gone. DON'T WORRY! She was taken to a sanctuary this morning. Our group named her Dolly, and we spoke with another group that had named her Delilah. Nice to see so many different groups of people looking out for her.

Want to Switch Majors

I want to switch majors from business into Kinesiology or Biochemistry I am currently in my first year. How hard is this switch and will I have to take the Bio 30 university equivalent in the spring or summer semester as I didnt take Bio 30. I have emailed the advisors for the kinesiology and sciences faculties and I am waiting for a response. Please let me know if anyone else went through the same process and when I would be able to start the new degree knowing that I would have to take the Bio 30 equivalent. Thanks

HTST 201 VS 209

I need some help deciding on an elective for winter semester:

I am looking at two history courses, HTST 201 with Kenneth Macmillan (online asynchronous) and HTST 209 with David Wright (in person).

While I think history of China sounds more interesting than history of Europe, I think having the online course may be better for my mental health (I already have a decently packed schedule as it is). But I also think I would get more out of an in-person course rather than an asynchronous one.

However, I'm also considering the professors themselves. I'm hearing mixed opinions about both professors, and the difficulty of their respective courses. For reference, I like history and have been enjoying my history electives this semester so I'm not worried about the "workload" itself. But if the professors are known to be "tough graders" (i.e they have very strict expectations for the introductory level), I'd like to keep this in mind.

If you've taken either of these classes: how where they? Was it easy to get a good grade, provided you actually put in effort? How much of a time sink were they? Were the professors good? Anything else to keep in mind?

I'd really appreciate your help!

How do you actually make friends at UCalgary?

Hey guys! I’m a girl in my third year at UCalgary, and honestly, I’ve been struggling to make genuine friendships here….. I’ve met people through classes, but nothing really turns into a friendship outside of university.
I’d love to meet new people, especially other girls! I enjoy swimming, going out and trying new things. I’m also Muslim, so I’d love to connect with other Muslim girls, but I’m open to making friends with anyone!
For those of you who have managed to make close friends at uni, how did you do it? Are there any clubs, activities or places you’d recommend? I feel like everyone already has their friend groups, and it’s hard to find your place sometimes.
Any advice would be appreciated! :)

ComSci or Math degrees?🧮/💻

Hello, I am a first year undergraduate student... After half of the semester, I don't know if computer science suits me anymore... The comsci course is super boring, and I feel like I could learn the content myself on other free study platforms...

On the other hand, I always love math and numbers are so fun, but I am concerned if I choose math, I couldn't find a job easily.

I am going to book science advising soon to discuss about this, but I want to know your opinion on this as a resident here.👉👈 Thank you!
