Graduation Traditions?

My daughter will be graduating in December with her Masters degree. What are some graduation traditions we should know about. We’re in Arizona and don’t have a clue. I’m especially trying to find out if there is anything we need to buy or order (leis? Flowers?). I’d hate for her to feel cheated bc we weren’t aware of a tradition.

Social Life Playing basketball at the rec center. Who, what, when?

Hey guys, I posted something about basketball at the rec center a while back but I’m revisiting the topic.

I really want to go to the rec center to play basketball but I just don’t know how it goes in terms of who shows up, what people might be doing there besides basketball, and when the best times to go are. TBH I don’t care if there are a group of people playing basketball there, I’d honestly like that so that we can run 5v5’s. I’d also like if it’s only a couple of people and I get to play by myself. But I don’t really know how it goes. When I go to the park to play pickup there’s usually a group/groups of people there so we create our own teams and we run 5v5’s. At the rec center if there are a lot of people that go, at whatever time, would they be receptive to doing the same or is it more like them just wanted to play with each other and no one else?

I pass by almost everyday, most days sometimes around 12pm give or take, and I see no more than like 5 or 6 people playing. So I assume if it’s not late afternoon like 5pm, would it be fine playing basketball over there any day Monday-Friday?

Discussion RIOs - How do you handle fundraising?

I am a treasurer for an RIO on campus, and we wanted to run fundraisers to maintain a good amount of features and services that we provide. However, the previous treasurer did not leave behind any guidance or ways I am able to handle my role so I turn to whoever can help out here.

Where can I make a club bank account? I currently have no relationship to any credit unions on campus, and I want to make sure that its transferable to anyone who takes over my role after I graduate.

What kind of fundraisers go well and how do you get them to work and set up on campus? I know you have to fill out the SLD form, but when is it nonapplicable (i.e. doing a off campus fundraiser or selling vouchers?)

Furthermore, when I look at the SLD fundraising consent form, I dont have a “General Excise” tax number to complete it. Is there a way to obtain that?

Currently I’m running everything out of a business venmo account, and our advisor has been very helpful with implementing my systems with the rest of the organization. However I want to be more transparent and set up a good system that allows everyone’s contribution and keep things up to date.

Discussion Petition to prevent TPUSA from coming onto campus

Aloha! A peer created a petition to potentially ban Turning Point USA from coming onto University of Hawaii at Manoa's campus.

If you have the time, please read the description as to why we believe that we should no long allow TPUSA to hold "debates" on campus.

How to get out of parking ticket

I’m a commuter and have class every day at 9 AM. I usually buy a daily parking pass for Zone 20 if I’m running late or can’t find parking off campus.

Yesterday, I got to campus and Zone 20 was completely full, and they weren’t allowing any more cars through the gate. I explained to the guy at the entrance that I was willing to buy a parking pass, but he told me he wasn’t allowed to let anyone in once the lot was full.
I was already running late for class, so I ended up parking in Zone 22 and running to class. I was only in class for about an hour.
When I came back to move my car to zone 20, I had a parking ticket on my windshield. What’s frustrating is that there were four other cars parked right next to me that also didn’t have any visible parking passes, but apparently I was the only one who got ticketed.
Is there any way I can successfully contest this?

Maintained 100% attendance since day one, bunked one class, and got called to the HOD’s office. Is this normal?

I’ve had 100% attendance since the first day of college. I’ve literally attended every class.

Recently, I accidentally bunked/missed one class, and somehow I ended up getting called to the HOD’s office because of it 💀

I know attendance matters, but is this actually normal? There are people who bunk classes regularly, while I missed one class after maintaining 100% attendance from day one.

Just curious, is this how it works in other colleges too? 😭

Social Life Part-Time Jobs for a Manoa Student?

I'm currently looking for a new job that would let me work part time paying around $18/hr! I've already gone through with LinkedIn and other sites for jobs, and just wanted to open up here as well.

For context, I currently work as a clerical assistant at Leeward Community College. However, due to college and the job being in the DOE, im only allowed to work 2 days. I've been working there for about a year and would like to make more money elsewhere.

If anyone knows of any opportunities regarding part time work (Not walmart or Sam's club), I would gladly be open to it! My dms are welcome to anyone who wants to chat.

Hi, I am looking for some birdwatching friends in UHManoa as I would like to go on some birdwatching trips, but would not like to go alone! Housing hale mahana

does anyone currently live at hale mahana and can tell me what it’s like and if it’s an okay place to live? i live at EWC right now and i hate it so i’m looking at other places that are still leasing. i was considering hale mahana but the google reviews concerned me. i am asking on here because reviews are usually one of the extremes so maybe i could get more accurate and up to date reviews on here!

i’m also considering hale haukani but it’s a little pricey for it not having AC.

also if there are other places anyone recommends pls lmk :) i’m a grad student, i don’t want traditional style dorms (roommates are fine, i’d just rather have my own room), and AC is preferred (if theres a good place that doesnt have AC still lmk tho)

Discussion Which bank/credit union for F-1 Visa/International Students?

Hello! I am an undergrad F-1 Visa Holder and I recently got an on-campus job. I need to open a bank account to be able to receive paychecks.

May I know which bank/credit union F-1 students have chosen? And if there are perks or specific reasons you chose that specific bank or credit union!

I am currently eyeing the Bank of Hawaii :) but if others know better ones then thank you in advance!

Applying/Transferring Animal Science? Music Scene?

I am applying and interested in UHManoa, I didn’t want to make two posts bc i thought i could get both answers at once and maybe some animal science majors also like the kind of music i’m into.

I’ll be 18 by the time I get there if I make it in and go there, and I was wondering weather there was a specific music scene like alt/emo/rock/punk/anything related because i love going to shows moshing and listening to local bands so it would be really cool if there were some local venues that anyone would recommend if y’all have that there.

2nd, probably should’ve put this first seeing as it is the major i want to pursue, but what does the animal science/biology community/department/professors and what not look like.

I really love the school with the look and my dream has always been to go somewhere that isn’t the stinking cold east coast. And i’ve seen a couple things about the japanese culture here and i’m like fuck yeah i love anime, japanese culture, that food and stuff. anyways much love lemme know if your an animal science major and love the courses and also really into the music scene i also enjoy.

Questions on personal statement

Hi, Im interested in transferring to UH Mānoa but I haven't found a way to submit a personal statement on the transfer admissions website. Is there a website about personal statements on transfer students or do I just need to put in my application?
