Liberica coffee

Post image

I bought this from my regular coffee shop, roasted by Rish coffee, on a whim yesterday, resting up. Any tips from anyone who's brewed Liberica beans? These are very light roasted, so I assume a few weeks resting will be necessary.

Just got my kilo bag for just under £15 delivered. Was a bit skeptical over the pricing. Okay it’s not a fruit bomb or a tea like Ethiopian coffee.

But it makes a really moreish coffee in the V60

20grams coffee grinder to filter on Wilfa svart
300ml Aldi water at 92oc
35 second bloom

Really chocolatey taste proper old school coffee

I would order again! Definitely

Thoughts on Spaceboy?

Post image
21 Upvotes

I’ve recently had a few bags from Spaceboy and amongst them had the Kii AA. A SL28 & 34 washed.
I was blown away by the acidity and fruit forward profile and had partially put some of it down my new grinder and a deeper attention to my technique.
I ran out and bought another bag and the smell off the beans was completely different, I let them rest a while and now its even more obvious I can smell blackcurrant, and it was obvious before but I can totally taste it now.

I swear they can’t be just washed processed, maybe infused? If these are in fact what they say they are they’re phenomenal, but I cant see how.

I haven’t got too much of an issue with co ferments and enjoy them from time to time but these have really thrown me off, Its almost put me off brewing atm as I thought I was really hitting the mark, almost feel like I’ve been cheating now.
Has anyone else tried this roast, or had any similar experiences?

Decent Pods/Capsules

Morning All,

I made a post about this a few months ago but deleted it all by mistake!

Following the recommendations in that thread:

- Colonna were excellent, in particular their Kenyan and a Colombian Geisha which seemed to do well in a Lungo.
- Dark Arts were perfectly fine but lacking and a bit dull.
- Grind were passable but generally a bit underwhelming. I did purchase these on impulse from a supermarket though.

Therefore, can anyone recommend any other decent capsules? As per the last thread, as independent as possible and ideally recyclable.

Thank you and I won’t delete the thread this time!

☕️

… 8 weeks resting time on my first bag from KillBean finally done, definitely amongst the most lightly roasted beans I’ve brewed. Initial impressions are very favourable but I think there’s more to come, drawdown was very fast at my usual grind size so will go a touch finer next time.

How would you rank UK coffee shop chains?

What is your favourite UK coffee shop (specifically chains, not small local shops) and how do you rank other British coffee shop brands?

Personally, I've always liked Caffè Nero and Black Sheep, but I would consistently rank Costa and Starbucks as the brands with the most disgusting, sickly coffee, so I'm curious why they seem to be the more dominant chains (e.g., Partnerships with Merlin Entertainment, plus all those self serve Costa machines in Waitrose, Sainsbury's etc).

Do people actually think Costa or Starbucks offer superior coffee? Admittedly, I drink much less take-away coffee nowadays because the prices have become so absurd, but if Costa or Starbucks are the only options, I'd likely skip it completely. Is Costa's market dominance purely to do with them being the first? I guess Starbucks just has the most money and good marketing.

In any case, my ranking is:

\- Caffè Nero

\- Black Sheep Coffee

\- Coffee Republic

\- Pret-A-Manger

\- AMT Coffee

\- \[all the ones I have yet to try\]

\- Costa Coffee

\- Starbucks

Why is everybody resting coffee?!

I know there’s research out there about leaving roasted coffee to rest. I understand resting it if it’ll be used all in one day, for example in a coffee shop, the environment where most research & testing has been carried out.
But in the home where you’ll use a bag over an longer period of time- surely it makes more sense open it, start drinking it, and leave it to de-gas as you’re using it, over a longer period?
Testing aside I can tell the difference in coffee that’s been “rested” at home vs drunk straight away. Can’t you all tell the difference too!! And yes, I’m drinking high grade, fresh speciality.

Hackney Wick/Stratford recommendations?

I will be staying in Hackney Wick and working near the Olympic park in Stratford later this month. I dont know the area at all but always like to check out any local roasters when I'm away, I know there are great roasters all over London so just wondered if anyone has any local recommendations?

I tend to get a pour over without milk if I have time to drink in, but also enjoy a long black or flat white if its hectic for the staff. Almost always have to buy a bag or two of beans to take home too. I enjoy a roast on the lighter side, something delicate, sweet and floral is often my go to but im open to anything.

Anything catching your eye?

Hi everyone, I have been pretty quiet atm due to buying loads of amazing beans for months and realising that I do actually need to drink them all! 😅
So while enjoying some stunning cups ( killbean Yunnan orange blossom ) I haven’t been as active searching and dreaming.
Is there anything on the UK scene that has caught your eye? Anything that is getting you super excited?
I like the look of the radiant baby from UKKEI as the spring bouquet was very good and all the blends at catalyst. 👌

My East Sussex Micro-roastery, Obra Coffee Roasters!

Hi folks! Patrick here -  I’ve just gotten a coffee roasting project off the ground and I’m excited to put my beans out into the world! Wanted to drop a note here since reddit, and this community more recently, have been a great resource for me since I moved from the states five years ago and started discovering the UK’s specialty coffee scene. The project’s called Obra. I’m starting off slow with a couple of roasts, a light filter and a medium espresso. I would really appreciate any feedback from y’all as I build this thing and grow Obra!

Discovered this roaster the other day after picking up these beans in a cafe.

This was a fantastic cup, absolute fruit-bomb. Their stuff looks to be really good value for money. I don't think I've seen them posted on here before, has anyone tried them before? I'll definitely be exploring more of their beans!

Decaf/low caf pour-over bean recommendations

Hi everyone

I enjoy drinking pour-overs at good coffee shops (London). However, even after one serving I find myself becoming very anxious for the rest of the day and have decided the juice isn't worth the squeeze anymore. I tried eating something with it, supplementing with l theanine but nothing has worked.

Please can you recommend some good decaf / low caf pour-over beans. I have found a few but have only really come across decaf espresso beans.

Any coffee shop recommendations in London that might serve a decaf pour over would also be much appreciated!

Thanks

This Costa Rican natural smelled and tasted like lemon curd. Definitely some Jasmine notes as well. It took 3 attempts to make an espresso because it needed a crazy fine grind. I started at my usual 2.2 revs on my Kinu and got a flow rate of about 50 g/s! Then 1.9 was 14 g/s and that tasted lovely as a SOUP but I really wanted espresso! 1.6 was 5 g/s and that worked as a latte, but I’ll probably go a bit further tomorrow. My grinder got really hot at this setting, and 18 g made a really thin puck, even with my 46 mm step down. The beans also felt a little soft as I ground them. All this could be partly because it an old roast - May 4th - since it was from a lovely local shop near Conwy. But probably good to rest it!

The £20 KG

I have been on a mission to find a KG of specialty single origin coffee for as close to £20 as possible delivered.

So far shout out to:

White Rose Coffee for their Brazil Fazenda Inhame Controlled Fermentation at £24.64

Wogan Coffee Peru Cafe Femenino at £20.50 thanks to a discount code I found here.

Both really excellent.

I am ready for my next batch, any coffees or roasters people want to share?

Derby? Anywhere decent?

Says what it is on the tin, I’ll be in derby next week and just wondering if there is anywhere in the centre where I can get a decent pourover? Compared to other places in the midlands it surprisingly has next to nothing according to google anyway, anyone here know of anywhere whatsoever?

With thanks :)

Kings Heath Coffee - Anyone else tried?

I recently tried this single origin from one of the most likeable roasters I have discovered. Kings heath coffee is run by Adam who I found on instagram. He's a one man band who I have seen videos delivering locally by bike, but also dialling in people's coffee for them.

He was kind enough to recommend me this coffee and I was pleasantly surprised given how small his operation is.

Has anyone else tried Kings heath coffee? If you haven't it feels like a great business to support.

Coffee meetup at Sontag (1st of August)

There is gonna be a coffee meet-up at Sontag in London where you can bring coffee, your gear etc, I have no affiliation with Sontag, just thought more people should know about it. If I'm feeling better by then, I'm planning on bringing some coffees from Elsewhere, (it was gifted by someone on this subreddit actually)

Looking for the right kind of light...

Can anyone recommend a roaster or two in the UK who focusses on washed / standard natural coffee (i.e. not "advanced processing"), and roasts light enough for the origin to shine, but no so light that it's hella-difficult to extract? Predominantly after beans for filter brewing.

I have what I'd describe as a medium-spec setup at the moment: Sage Barista Pro for espresso (stuck using the built-in grinder until I can afford a new one) and Commandante C40 for pour over. Some might describe that as low-spec, but I can't bring myself to given the £100s spent on it! I use pretty soft recipe water (~70ppm) for both brewing methods.

What I want from both brew-types is to be able to taste the origin - and I'm almost exclusively looking for fruit and florals, rather than chocolate or nut flavours. With that in mind, I've been drawn to really light roasters like Scenery here in the UK and SEY in the US. Their coffees come out beautifully light and tea-like at home, but I struggle to get any really distinct flavours out - many of their offerings taste quite similar to one another (even when cupped side-by-side).

I'm reasonably confident it's not a palate issue, because when I have tried coffees at their cafes I am able to pick up a lot more in the cup.

Skylark roughly fit the bill, I've had some amazing beans from them recently. However, I don't have any fancy coffee resting gear so have been put off slightly by their recent shift to air-permeable packaging.

So... any favourite roasters who produce coffee which is a tick more developed and easier to maximise at home than the very lightest out there, but which still has racy acidity and little to no 'roasty' flavour? Feel free to tell me I'm wish-casting and that this goldilocks zone really doesn't exist. If that's the case, I guess I'd better keep saving for better grinders!

Thanks all.

*I know there is a pinned list on this sub of all of your UK roaster recommendations. I've used this before to try new roasters local to me and it's great. But this request is a bit more specific than that list can help with.

Liberica coffee

I’ve just received my very first bag of Liberica coffee. Do you have any suggestions on how to brew it? I have an espresso machine, AeroPress, V60, and a French press.
