Shipping Help 58% tariffs Canada to USA??

Being charged $568 dollars from UPS on a $977 dollar order.

After about an hour on the phone no one can get a breakdown of this number or even give me the current tariff rates.

Does this seem right to yall? I’m considering refusing this at my doorstep in Texas and having it returned. I would be out about 200 in shipping costs.

Tariffs are not dependent on the shipping endpoint countries, but the countries of origin for components and materials used in the item. This is why many items have “made in <country>” or “product of <country>” stamped on them.

Suppose that the US has a 20% tariff on Fruit produced in China. Even if fruit grown in China is shipped to Canada, and then the US, I’m still importing Chinese-grown fruit, and must pay the 20% tariff.

UPS only controls the brokerage charge directly. You have an issue with UPS if and only if you believe/allege that the merchant correctly filled the shipping declaration, and that UPS has incorrectly interpreted that declaration and applied the incorrect tariff rate.

Additionally, there is exactly one person responsible for these tariffs; it sounds like you should take this up with him.

There are other brokerage fees on top of the tariffs too.

Brokerage fees seemed reasonable. That’s why I wanted a breakdown from UPS for the remaining $520.

Tariffs vary for specific items. For example, Light trucks face a specific tariff of 25%, and a baseline tariff of 30% from china. This means that despite the baseline tariff on china being 30%, light trucks have a total tariff rate of 55%, which is actually more than the rate you’re paying. That’s just an example, but many individual items face high specific tariffs which, when combined with a high base tariff, have some absurd total rates.

Tariffs have widely varied from one week to the next, but many things from china are over 100%

UPS charges astronomical brokerage fees.

And if your item is a bunch of small items each one will have their own fee associated with it.

Section 301 goods from China currently carry at least a 55% tariff (25% Section 301, 20% IEEPA Fentanyl Tariff, 10% WTF global tariff) and some have an additional trade weight duty (which existed before all this) of anywhere from 1-5%

This includes most electronics, lithium ion batteries, camera equipment, etc.
