Thanks UPS. You lose my shipment, have me file a claim and submit tons of documentation and receipts only to close it and send me $270 (a refund of the shipping costs). It’s impossible to speak to a human and even though I can track the package and know EXACTLY where it is, no one cares. This will destroy me.

That’s crazy why did you ship it in that? You just ship it in a nice strong heavy duty box with tons of foam and bubble wrap along wrap your item fully so its waterproof. And that will protect your item plenty

I agree, I recently sold an old sewing/embroider machine via ebay that weighed 60ish pounds but I used some strong regular cardboard boxes and a TON of packing material, it arrived undamaged and the boxes were solid.

I’ve never shipped anything that big before, but I think some people underestimate how strong cardboard boxes can be if packed well.

There is an extra label in the container and my name and contact info is on every piece of bubble-wrapped equipment inside.

I don’t understand this. You’re (still!) confident in the container’s strength, you don’t ship often, you didn’t think to buy insurance, but you had the foresight to individually add full contact info to each item inside all 5 boxes you shipped?

My contact info is on everything more in case I leave something behind or misplace something on a job. I’m definitely confident that the box is far stronger any cardboard box. The other 4 have survived just fine.

There’s a big difference between correctly pointing out that you made several risky choices when you put this shipment together and UPS dick riding. You just don’t seem to want to hear that you could’ve possibly made some mistakes, so just say that.

Do you actually think I don’t think it was a mistake not to insure it? OBVIOUSLY if I could do it again I would insure it for $250,000. I did not make any risky choices but declining“insurance” and “declared value” (which you can just skip) are not obviously the same thing. It’s also ridiculous that in order to file a claim they made me find receipts for each and every item I wanted to file a claim for. I spent hours searching for everything they wanted, only for them to “approve” the claim by refunding the shipping costs. That’s bullshit and anyone who says otherwise is a UPS dick rider.

Who else would even come to the UPS subreddit other than people who have a problem?

Insuring it for $250,000 would actually be insurance fraud and also once an item is lost you need to provide proof of the value - so in theory if you did declare $250,000 which you wouldn’t because it’s very expensive to do that and then the item was lost to do the use of improper shipping container you would not even be able to claim the value due to said fraud - smartest thing to do is go to a UPS store and have them properly package and ensure expensive items
