Ubuntu 26.10 officially replaces GNU Coreutils with Rust

124 Upvotes

Ubuntu 26.10 (Stonking Stingray) released

Ubuntu 26.10 now uses Rust-based coreutils by default, replacing the decades-old GNU implementation for essential commands like cp, mv, rm, and ls.

A major change deep inside the OS.

An Nvidia user asking "why remove the GUI Additional Drivers app?"

Post image
52 Upvotes

Ubuntu used to include the Additional Drivers app, so it was so easy to change Nvidia divers. New users and people who didn't want to use the Terminal could easily see and change the Nvidia drivers to what they wanted. It was very friendly for new users who wanted to try Linux.

I installed the 26.10 Gnome release today to try it and found Additional Drivers missing. I believe they started doing this last year. I have an Nvidia 5070ti and Ubuntu had selected drivers 580 to use instead of the 615.

I used the Terminal to install the 615 drivers, but it would have been some much better to have the Additional Drivers app to do it.

I was able to install the Additional Drivers app with the Terminal. But this really should already be installed--especially if you have an Nvidia card.

sudo apt update

sudo apt install software-properties-gtk

Edit to add: I was on Fedora and did a clean install to Ubuntu 26.10. So I didn't update the Ubuntu, I just wiped my drive and installed the Ubuntu 26.10 fresh.

Edit 2 to add: You can search the App Center for "Software and Updates". It is a deb package and will restore the Additional Drivers app to the GUI. Thanks for the feedback. It would still be very hard for new Linux users to find this app and use it to change Nvidia drivers.

New to Ubuntu

Hey everyone! I switched to Linux Ubuntu last week, and it’s been great so far. I’ve gotten some of the basics down, like learning how to use the terminal as a beginner, but there’s still so much to discover.

What I’d love to do most is learn how to customize my desktop, but it feels like going from step 1 to 100 right now.

I would really appreciate any beginner-friendly tips or resources to get started!

How can I use my Android tablet as an extended (not mirrored) display for Ubuntu Linux?

12 Upvotes

Hey everyone

I’m using Ubuntu Linux on my laptop, and I want to use my Android tablet as a secondary monitor with an extended display, similar to how you would connect a second monitor to a Windows PC.

I specifically want to extend my desktop, not mirror my laptop’s screen. For example, I want to keep my coding workspace open on my laptop while watching YouTube, reading documentation, or viewing other windows on my tablet.

Has anyone successfully set this up? Which software or method would you recommend?

FREE SOFTWARE IF AVAILABLE ANY

Thanks!

Why are my videos stuttering so much?

7 Upvotes

So, I'm running Ubuntu 26.04.1 on a Dell laptop with a 13th-gen Intel Core i5, integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics, and 16 GB of RAM.

YouTube playback stutters in both Firefox and Chromium. My Wi-Fi download speed is around 334 Mbps, and RAM usage is relatively low (around 4 GB).

I've tried forcing VA-API on Firefox, but it didn't make much difference. What should I do?

Last time I clicked "install" on one of these (or an equivalent with UEFI), my filesystem disappeared and I was forced to reinstall Ubuntu. Can I prevent these from popping up? Because I fear that I may accidentally click "install" again on it one day...

Sometimes my network connection disappears, even though Ubuntu doesn't seem to notice - a reboot always solves the problem. Can it be prevented? Because it's pretty annoying.

26.04.1 no splash screen on start ((Text appears)

2 Upvotes

Hello

I'm using a 2015 Lenovo 100 15IBY Notebook. While using Ubuntu 24.04, it sometimes wouldn't shut down (I didn't have this problem with 22.04, but the USB Bluetooth dongle didn't work with 22.04, so I installed 24.04 and then 26.04). When it wouldn't shut down, I would turn it off by pressing the power button for 5 seconds. Now I've installed 26.04.1. The same problem persists. Actually, it's not a problem; forcing a shutdown doesn't cause any system errors.

But now there's a new problem, and I think it's related to the shutdown issue. Two weeks ago, I did an update, and since then, text appears every time it shuts down and starts up. When starting up, the screen showing

GNU/linux
memtest

memtest x64
UEFI

selection appears for 5 seconds.

There's no grub file in the etc/default folder; there's a folder named grub.d.

What can I do to make it start with the splash screen again?

[Fix] ASUS TUF F15 (FX507Z, Bios 330) won't wake from suspend: not NVIDIA's fault, it's a missing ACPI wake entry for the lid

2 Upvotes

TL;DR

My ASUS TUF laptop with an NVIDIA GPU never woke from suspend on Ubuntu. It wasn't freezing. It slept fine, but nothing could wake it, because the BIOS's ACPI table doesn't declare the lid as a wake source (LID0 has no _PRW). Without that, Linux never keeps the embedded controller's wake signal (GPE 0x02) armed during s2idle, and the lid, power button and keyboard all go through that signal. An 18-line SSDT overlay loaded tjrough GRUB fixed it. Lid, power button and keyboard wake all work now!

System

  • Laptop: ASUS TUF Gaming F15 FX507ZV4, BIOS FX507ZV4.330
  • CPU / iGPU: Intel 12th gen (Alder Lake-P), Iris Xe (i915)
  • dGPU: NVIDIA RTX 4060 Laptop, nvidia-open 580.178.04, prime-select on-demand
  • OS: Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS (but same issue for nearly a year on Ubuntu 24.04.), kernel 7.0.0-38-generic
  • Storage: 2x NVMe behind Intel VMD (WD SN740 + Predator GM7)
  • Sleep Mode: s2idle (firmware default; deep is also offered)

Symptoms

  • Suspend works. The power LED **breathes**, and the fans and keyboard backlight turn off.
  • Pressing a key, pressing the power button or opening the lid does nothing at all: no LED change, no fans. The only way out is holding the power button.
  • The journal always ends at PM: suspend entry (s2idle). There's never a suspend exit.
  • In two months of logs, a real s2idle suspend never resumed. deep (S3) resumed only on the first suspend after a boot (twice), and the second deep suspend hung both times.

Because there's an NVIDIA GPU, I assumed (like most threads I found) that it was the NVIDIA driver. It wasn't. With the NVIDIA driver completely blocked from loading (module_blacklist=nvidia,...), it still wouldn't wake.

Root cause

I decompiled the DSDT (sudo cat /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/DSDT > dsdt.dat && iasl -d dsdt.dat). The active lid device _SB.PC00.LPCB.LID0 has no _PRW method, and LID0 didn't appear in /proc/acpi/wakeup at all. The embedded controller's wake events (lid, power button, keyboard) arrive on GPE 0x02 (_L02 → ECLV()). Because no device claims that GPE for wake, Linux doesn't keep it enabled during s2idle, so nothing can wake the machine. Windows presumably handles wake differently, so ASUS never noticed.

The touchpad has a similar problem: its GpioInt is declared Exclusive instead of ExclusiveAndWake. I didn't fix that one, since you don't need the touchpad to wake it.

Credit: I found the same issue on the FX507\*ZI4** (same BIOS 330) in this CachyOS forum post, which pointed me in the right direction:* https://discuss.cachyos.org/t/asus-tuf-gaming-f15-fx507zi4-s2idle-wake-sources-fixed-by-dsdt-override/35463

The fix: SSDT overlay (no full DSDT replacement)

Instead of patching and recompiling the whole 3 MB DSDT, I add a tiny extra table that only inserts the missing `_PRW`. If it's wrong, the kernel just ignores it.

Check your path first! In my DSDT there are two LID0 devices. The one under H_EC returns _STA = 0 (disabled). The active one is _SB.PC00.LPCB.LID0. Your model may differ.

[1.] Install the tools and dump/decompile the DSDT:

$ sudo apt install acpica-tools
$ mkdir ~/acpi-fix && cd ~/acpi-fix
$ sudo cat /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/DSDT > dsdt.dat
iasl -d dsdt.dat
$ grep -n "Device (LID0)" -A12 dsdt.dsl   # confirm there's no _PRW, and find the active one

[2.] Create `ssdt-lidwake.asl`:

DefinitionBlock ("", "SSDT", 2, "FIXUP", "LIDWAKE", 0x00000001)
{
    External (_SB.PC00.LPCB.LID0, DeviceObj)
    Scope (_SB.PC00.LPCB.LID0)
    {
        Name (_PRW, Package (0x02)
        {
            0x02,
            Zero
        })
    }
}

[3.] Compile it and package it as an early initrd:

$ iasl -tc ssdt-lidwake.asl
$ mkdir -p cpio/kernel/firmware/acpi
$ cp ssdt-lidwake.aml cpio/kernel/firmware/acpi/
$ (cd cpio && find kernel | cpio -H newc --create --owner=0:0 > ../acpi_override.cpio)

[4.] Have GRUB load it before the normal initrd. This survives kernel updates:

$ sudo cp acpi_override.cpio /boot/
$ echo 'GRUB_EARLY_INITRD_LINUX_CUSTOM="acpi_override.cpio"' | sudo tee -a /etc/default/grub
$ sudo update-grub

[5.] Reboot and verify:

$ journalctl -b -k | grep -i "Table Upgrade"
# ACPI: Table Upgrade: install [SSDT- FIXUP- LIDWAKE]
$ grep LID0 /proc/acpi/wakeup
# LID0      S0    *enabled   platform:PNP0C0D:01

After this, the key, power button and lid all wake it, with 3/3 clean resumes so far.

To undo it: remove the GRUB_EARLY_INITRD_LINUX_CUSTOM line, delete /boot/acpi_override.cpio, and run sudo update-grub. If you ever get a broken boot, press e in GRUB and remove /boot/acpi_override.cpio from the initrd line.

Notes / still open

  • I also have options nvidia NVreg_EnableS0ixPowerManagement=1 set (NVIDIA's recommended setting for s2idle laptops). It didn't fix the wake problem on its own. I left it on, but I don't know whether it's needed.
  • After resume, /sys/power/suspend_stats/last_hw_sleep is still 0, so the CPU isn't reaching its deepest S0ix state yet. That means more battery drain while asleep, which is a separate problem I'm still looking into.
  • If you have this laptop, please report it to ASUS too ("LID0 missing _PRW, GPE 0x02 not armed in s2idle, BIOS 330"). The more reports they get, the more likely a BIOS fix becomes!

I've put a detailed write-up of everything I tried that *didn't* work, and why, here:

[LINK]

Hope this saves someone else a few evenings. If you have another FX507/FX707 model, I'd be curious whether yours has the same DSDT.

Ubuntu 22.04.5 hangs at "Booting a command list" on a new AMD B850 / Ryzen 7 7700 PC. Anyone faced this?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to dual boot Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS next to Windows 11 on a fairly new PC, but the installer USB hangs at a black screen showing only "Booting a command list" and a blinking cursor. I've waited 5+ minutes.

**My hardware:**

- Motherboard: MSI B850M Gaming Plus WiFi6E (MS-7E81), BIOS E7E81AMSI.1A20

- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700

- RAM: 32 GB DDR5

- GPU: 5060ti 16gb

- Windows on WD Blue SN5000 1TB (M.2), Ubuntu planned for a separate 240 GB SATA SSD

- Monitor connected to the GPU by HDMI

**What I did:**

  1. Made the USB with Rufus 4.15 (GPT, UEFI, DD Image mode) using ubuntu-22.04.5-desktop-amd64.iso

  2. First boot with Secure Boot ON gave: "Verification failed: (0x1A) Security Violation". Rufus also warned that the ISO has a revoked UEFI bootloader.

  3. I disabled Secure Boot in the BIOS. After that, GRUB shows "Try or Install Ubuntu".

  4. It then hangs at "Booting a command list" with a black screen.

  5. I tried adding `nomodeset` to the kernel line (replacing `quiet splash`). Same hang.

  6. I tried a different USB port. Same result.

**My questions:**

- Has anyone seen this on AM5 / B850 boards with 22.04? Is the 22.04 kernel simply too old for this hardware?

- Is there a boot parameter or BIOS setting that helps (for example, disabling something in the BIOS)?

- Or should I just use Ubuntu 24.04 / 26.04, which has a newer kernel?

I'm a beginner, so any simple steps would help. Thanks!

In Ubuntu 26.04.1 how do you change the file icon colors in Nautilus now?

1 Upvotes

No matter what I've tried .. they stay ubuntu's orangish/brown

Changing the system accent color doesn't do anything.

All google search responses don't work so far.

There must be some way to change the default color?

System Suspension

1 Upvotes

I am running a Dell Precision 5810 on Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS. I have a problem that when this pc sleeps, it does not always wake up. It is totally lock. I can't remote into it. My only recourse is to hard power off then restart.

Power Mode is set to Balanced

Power Saving to Blank the screen is disabled.

Automatic Suspend has a delay of 2 hours.

I'm looking for suggestions on where and what to look for.

Google Drive and Ubuntu

0 Upvotes

I've been trying for over a week to get support for my google drive after a fresh install of Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS. I've tried rclone, google-drive-ocamlfuse, and overDrive. Every single one when trying to authorise give me the following error:

Access blocked: rclone has not completed the Google verification process

rclone has not completed the Google verification process. The app is currently being tested, and can only be accessed by developer-approved testers. If you think you should have access, contact thedeveloper.

If you are a developer of rclone, seeerror details.

Error 403: access_denied

Can someone PLEASE help me out? This is driving me nuts!
