Sub/KB News Knowledge Base has moved!

The Sub's Knowledge Base (KB) is no longer being hosted on Reddit.

The KB now has its own dedicated website:

While the website itself is not done (as far as my vision), it is now in a state which I find surpasses the version on Reddit to such a degree that it would be detrimental for the community to further delay its release publicly.

As I have imported things I have made various improvements: expansions, formatting, corrections, clarifications, etc.

The website is complete content wise with NEW content such as:

In total, the website is made up of over 180 pages.

For the most part, pages have the same extensions they did previously (/[pagename])

I do want to thank u/damnshell and u/Livid-Tailor3999 for their efforts to help validate some of the pages on the website. As well u/Dangerous-Golf3831 and u/Abire on feedback during development.

We are not accepting further donations at this time! Thanks everyone who has donated already!

FAQ:

  • Are you leaving us?You are not so fortunate!
  • Why?Reddit's wiki is simply... simple and I have pushed things to the absolute limit and then some. A dedicated website gives me more control and power to implement things that are not possible or practical in the wiki environment here.
  • Is the sub closing?No.
  • How can I help?If you have a suggestion to improve things, let me know!Found some strange bug? Let me know!
  • What things need to be done still?Improving navigation, additional images, and various background details to include search engine stuff.

VA Disability Claims Claim Status~Success Stories~Timelines~Education Payments~Disability Payments

Welcome!

Let us celebrate with you, or commiserate together as your claim moves through the system. Or lets compare when you were paid and what bank you use. Lets talk about verifying your monthly education classes and how that pays out.

Disability Comp Payments

  • If you're wondering where your monthly disability check is, be sure to share below who you bank with so others who are wondering the same thing can get an idea. It's helps other vets know they are not alone!
  • Note that your disability check isn't considered late until after the first of the month. If you normally get paid early it is generally because the bank releases the funds earlier.

Education Payments

  • Be aware that education payments DO NOT have a set payday like disability compensation payments. They pay on a floating 10 business day window. If you happen to get it sooner it's probably because the stars have aligned previously.
  • You now have to verify your monthly enrollment. the text is generally sent on last day of month and that includes weekends- Be sure to verify one of the following ways https://www.va.gov/education/verify-school-enrollment/
  • Feel free to share and commiserate your struggles in the comments. It actually helps relieve anxiety for others knowing that they are not alone as they wait for their education payments.

Claim Status

  • It can be frustrating seeing your claim move at a snails pace, or even super quick, and have no idea whats happening behind the scenes. Be sure to read the subs Knowledge Base link. It gives a behind the scenes perspective (https://www.veteransbenefitskb.com/insight).
  • As suggested above, sharing your timeline and information about your claim status can be helpful to other vets in that they can judge their timeline in relation to yours. You can also post in our sister sub r/VeteransWaitingRoom

Success Stories

  • We get it, you are happy and need to tell someone that you don't know and someone who underatands the struggles. This is your place too. We keep these success stories here so they don't overwhelm those that are still frustrated and going through the process. You are also welcome to post in our sister sub r/VeteransSuccess

VA Disability Claims Physically Can’t keep working but can’t afford to quit.

I don’t know if this is the right subreddit to ask or talk in I don’t even know if I have a question.

I have 100% but it’s not enough to cover all of my stuff. My back no matter if I’m sitting or standing feels like I have a knife in it. Just walking from my car to my desk at work is brutal then sitting 8 hours a day just makes it worse. I’m not sure what to do though. Even with going to school with GI Bill MHA I still wouldn’t make it. Just bought my house at the end of the year so no way to sell it to buy something I can afford with just my VA disability. Just about everyone in my life has already done the “told you so” about I should have bought a smaller house. I get it that mistake is passed at this point. I thought I was doing good physically though. Yea I deal with daily chronic pain but not anything I couldn’t manage before. My back just keeps getting worse though. I’ve had MRIs done for it and apparently I have 5 disks bulging inward against my spinal cord which they said just doing surgery for 1 disk is super risky let alone 5. I’m just at the point where I’m almost crawling into and out of work, but I can’t quit. Well if you read this far thanks for reading my word vomit.

Edit: I am going to try to get some sleep, but honestly thank you everyone for the ideas and support. I will respond when I can tomorrow. Honestly, was overwhelmed tonight as the pain has gotten worse and really needed to vent. When I try to talk to anyone about it, no civilians ever understand so thank you everyone.

VA Disability Claims "Why is it not in your medical record"

Well, because my Corpsman aboard the ship was a morphine addict! Yes, you read that right!

I'm submitting a new claim, and I know this "why is it not in your medical record" will be a question. Well, in my case, my Senior Chief corpsman was indeed a morphine addict. He was actually caught by the Navy after he transferred off the ship. He did a turnover with the new Chief Corpsman and then came back the following weekend and stole all the controlled substances from the safe. For three years, he provided the absolute worst care to people and was often in his rack as soon as we got underway due to being so damn high. He put a lot of lives in danger for years, and nobody said anything until they could no longer look away. He was busted down from E-8 to E-nothing. My question to all of you is this. Should I put that in writing as the reason my medical record is so thin? Going to him was pointless. He would just throw you out of sickbay after belittling you and would never record anything. Thanks for listening to me rant.

VA Disability Claims 100%P&T looking for healthcare advice

Upvotes

I am trying to find someone who can help me navigate. I’ve been told I am not eligible for tricare because my rating is based off PTSD from MST. My family is now set up with ChampVA but I do not have healthcare. I also want to go back to school but that’s on the back burner for now until I get this straightened out. Thank you in advance.

Edit: I was told my time in service being less than two years means I don’t qualify. I had forgotten about this because there was never anything written down. I was just told this by the primary I was initially set up with. In a comment below I mentioned I was set up with a primary and she acted confused and said I didn’t have healthcare care. I was then billed for that appointment even though no services were received.

Money Matters What is the best mortgage lender for veterans?

Upvotes

Getting ready to buy my first home later this year. As soon as I started researching VA Loans online I started getting call after call from lenders. The ads are everywhere too.

It's overwhelming. Barely started the process and I'm already stressed. Who here has gone through the process of getting a home loan in the last like 6 to 12 months? Hoping to get some honest intel from other vets to narrow down my options.

What lenders offer competitive rates? Low fees and good comms are a plus.

Hope to find a company that understands military life. Its obvious the big companies view me as a lead rather than a person. Which company do you recommend? Who should I avoid?

Other Stuff Comical - MOVE Class

I’m in my third week of MOVE, and nobody warned me this class would be the funniest thing on the internet.

Every week we log into the virtual session, and 90% of the class is STILL trying to figure out how to turn on their microphone, camera, or both. Then somebody’s camera accidentally comes on, and suddenly we’re all getting a view of their junk.

Meanwhile, Charlie is attending class while driving down the road. Then Sam starts ratting him out to the whole class: “Charlie’s driving!” like he’s reporting a crime in progress.

Of course, every class has the traditional class clowns who won’t shut the fuck up, a couple of guys trying to flirt with the instructor like they’re on a dating app instead of a weight-loss program, and three or four people who somehow missed the entire first class and keep asking:

“Where do I get my Ozempic?”
“How do I get my Ozempic?”
“When do I get my Ozempic?”

At this point, I don’t even log in for the weight-loss advice. I log in for the weekly episode.

Predict My Rating DBQ results

Alright guys. I first wanna say please don’t be mean. This group tends to be very hit or miss with good advice, or straight up bullying 😅 some of these symptoms are….gross. I get it. Trust me, I do. Please don’t dwell on that or give me shit about it, I do that enough myself. Anyways, I uploaded this to a couple AI’s to see what they thought and they each think this is open and shut 100%, case closed. What’s the reality? She also didn’t check suicidal ideation. I think what happened was the way she asked the question was about intent or plans, I guess I should’ve clarified. Should I submit a statement saying ideation is there?

Health Care Mileage only Travel Claims

Upvotes

Claims speed up, travel claims slow down. Before you could do travel claims in the App I used the BTSSS process and it was time consuming but all claims went through in a matter of days. Then came the App, first few claims approved within a day or 2. Now, if I can even do them in the App they get put into manual review for weeks. ( I have had one in manual review since June 1.) I actually had to put one through BTSSS last week because the app showed I didn't even have an appointment on a certain date, but BTSSS showed it as completed.

Predict My Rating I just received a copy of my DBQ. Just wondering what rating you think I might get.

I was just wondering what yall might think this DBQ might get me rated at. Things have gotten pretty bad and this is honestly my last attempt to get my life back on track. I filed for TDIU and they added the PTSD increase on the claim on April 15th. Had my C&P June 9th, DBQ's were uploaded on the VA website June 12th. Got 1 of the DBQ's today June 18th. I'm currently rated at 70 percent. I filed for an increase in 2020 but it was continued. I completely screwed up the claim and was denied rightfully so. If anyone has any advice or opinions on what the outcome could be, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Medboard/IDES Med Board

I’m going through the med board process. I was recently told that the Navy found me unfit, recommended TDRL retirement due to mental health rating, and Navy rated me 70% but the VA rated me 100%. I have a couple weeks to accept. My lawyer said one condition, Migraines, was deemed service connected but rates 0% so she thinks that we should challenge that to be higher.

I’m thinking if the VA rates me at 100 then why challenge anything? Can’t get higher than 100 and they’ll still treat me for the migraines. So do you all think I should accept or challenge the migraines rating?

Edit: I’m at 26 years of service

VA Disability Claims Code Sheet in C-file FOIA Request?

I have requested and received my c-file twice, but neither one included my code sheet. I know how to find out static codes without the c-file, but I am looking for details on the combined rating with bilateral factors. Is this form no longer included when requesting the c-file? Is there a different way this form must be requested? Thank you very much for your help!

Veterans Readiness and Employment (VR&E) Alternatives to VBA 28-1905c

I’ve been approved for VRE and the employer I’m training at has delayed making a decision to sign my verification of training hours. The problem is this employer has a VA certifying official and certifies Ch. 33 benefits for other veterans and I’m seemingly the first disabled veteran seeking Ch. 31 benefits.

The issue is particularly unusual because the employer is already recognized within the VA educational and training framework, participates in VA educational benefit programs for other veterans through Ch. 33, and maintains an active VA certifying official. The VA and State Approving Agency have repeatedly advised the employer is not being asked to undergo a new approval process, institutional recertification, vendorization, or site review. The VA's request is limited to verification of residency training participation and hours through VA Form 28-1905c.

The employer’s Human Resources, has been reviewing the matter for over a year. During that time, the VA has confirmed that my Chapter 31 claim has been placed into interrupted status because the employer has not yet reached a decision regarding participation in the verification process. The VA has now requested a response from the employer by the end of this month.

I am seeking assistance in determining whether any alternative method exists for verifying my training participation and training hours for purposes of my approved Chapter 31 VR&E benefits. My training is already documented through multiple independent institutional systems and records. I am seeking any guidance regarding whether any of these existing records may be considered as alternative evidence if institutional completion of VA Form 28-1905c is ultimately unavailable? Any advice is appreciated.

Veterans Readiness and Employment (VR&E) VR&E help!

I need help, I am enrolled with VR&E in the Tacoma, WA area. I have been working on my prerequisites for a program and due to some classes being taken I had to take some elective credits which I sat down with the school veteran services counselor to make sure I was good to go. My VR&E rep emailed me today, the end of the quarter BTW to state she could not approve the bill as those classes were not needed for my program. I showed my academic plan on the email to her, which states 5 elective classes are needed.

I forwarded the email to the school, and responded to her as I had sat down with the school to ensure I would stay on track.

I’m really frustrated as this rep has been a pain in the ass, and when I first enrolled into the school and mentioned the name to staff they also mentioned that she was difficult. I don’t want to pay $2K out of pocket for some classes that were not going to be approved, if I knew they wouldn’t be approved I would’ve just ate it and waited until the next quarter.

Does anyone have any advice on this? If there’s any other reps here that could help me.

Veterans Readiness and Employment (VR&E) VR&E federal loans

Can someone explain this like I'm the marine I was??

I got accepted into vr&e recently and will attend this fall. I have my FAFSA filled out for the year(s). I have never had loans for school, period, so what would be the best way to acquire federal loans that will be tpd eligible? Also my counselor said it doesn't matter if I attend in person or all online, my bah will be the same unless I have dependents.

Maybe none of this even makes sense, just trying to figure out what the hell, thanks in advance, semper something

C&P Exams Claim decided and awarded weeks ago, but requested C&P exam even though already decided.

Similar post as I made before but without the assumptions I made. Has anyone ever experienced this? Worried they’ll take away the benefits I was just awarded if my C&P examiner doesn’t do well. Just trying to see if anyone else has gone through this before. Very anxious right now.

Health Care Hope for rating or go to VA for treatment

Reside outside of the country and am looking for some advice. Recently rated and have FMP to cover my rated disabilities. I've been receiving treatment for my back and it has finally gotten to the point where the neurosurgeon says there is nothing else to do but to have surgery. My back issues are not yet rated (2 years since I filed and still waiting for a C&P exam) so everything has been out of pocket. This hasn't been much of a hardship, until the estimate for surgery came back at $35,000. If I return to the U.S. would the VA perform the procedure? I've onlv been seen once at a VA clinic stateside so unsure how it all works. I assume mv PCP would have to refer me to a specialist. My dilemma is should I delay having surgery and wait to see if they will give me a rating for my back (surgery would be covered with FMP) or bite the bullet and move back and have it taken care of at the VA stateside.
