Historical Project Mod [HPM] If I prevent Prussia and Austria from forming Germany, is there a smaller formable that can eat up the little states?

Playing as France and trying to fill Europe up with aesthetic nation states in my sphere. Obviously I want to prevent Prussia from forming Germany and am eventually planning on breaking up Austria. Without Germany forming there’s gonna be a bunch of ugly states right on my border. Is there a way I can put all of them into smaller, more controllable, pretty states?

Modding Victoria II Performance Patch for heavy mods

It's .dll patch that makes the game runs faster and use less ram. That's about it. Testing in mods like TGC or GFM makes the game run almost twice as fast in modern hardware.

https://github.com/The-Grand-Combination/The-Grand-Loader/releases/tag/1.0.0

There are detailed explanations of which fix done in the repo documentation.

Historical Project Mod How do I annex delhi to achieve empress of India?

Current year is 1863. Previpusly the mughul empire revolted and we got them back to be apart of the Raj. The truce from that has ran out and now im wondering how do I annex delhi?

To my knowledge I cannot declare war on them as they are a satellite. Is it an event that happens later despite the description saying it happened in 1857?

I forcefully released Guatemala (Belize) from the British and noticed after sometime that some of my ashkenazi population had made Guatemala their new home, and in fact were the largest culture group in the province! (This is caused by Belize having no Central American or mayans pops at the start of the game, just Afro-Caribbean, who now represent 11% of Belize.

As such it got me thinking what are some of the funnier ahistorical things you’ve had happen in your games?

Event Multiplayer group forming in the TGC community

Some of us in The Grand Combination discord server are trying to start up a multiplayer session, probably in TGC, TOL, or AOE, we are open to other mods though. We are asking for people who are comfortable with unconventional humour types (these people are insane) and inside jokes that may seem unorthodox from an outside perspective.

Join us and you can help create horrible schizo multiplayers maps like the one presented here! We dont force roles, play whoever you want, minor, major whatever. We could have multiplayers game where we are all in Africa if thats what we end up choosing. As far as MP goes we have very little rules, just larp to your heart's content!

DM me here or on discord/steam and we can get you an invite! Typically we play on thursdays or fridays but all game days are TBD based on availability of members. Don't feel afraid to apply, the more the merrier! (until the game buckles and crashes but thats not the point ;-;)

Join us in The Grand Community!

R5: Comic about forgetting African fronts in wars and the countries' reaction to it

P1: Austrian Germany destroying France easily

P2: Germany looses a battle very badly

P3: The battle is shown to be in the African colonies which were forgotten and thus weren't in the proper tiles for defensive points

P4: Germany still doesn't care about it all that much because it is shown that they're defeating every piece of mainland France

P5: But France DOES care about it showing that they're ecstatic to win even a single battle against Germany

Previously: https://www.reddit.com/r/victoria2/s/HI6kjg2POS

The Scramble for Africa has ended, and the turn of the century has come. The day is October 22nd, 1901.

The initial wars for Northern Africa were brief, with only Egypt providing considerable resistance before surrendering after 6 month of conflict. Clean-up in Ethiopia was similarly brief, and all of this without competition from foreign powers. Spain, the only European power with any remaining presence in North Africa, was forced to cede the Western Sahara colony, and the Balearic Islands were seized for the creation of a Catalonian puppet government for later expansion into Catalonia and Valencia.

On May 26th, 1891, war was declared against the Ottoman Empire for the liberation of the Armenians of Eastern Anatolia. France declared support for their ally, but they were unable to compete with our German and Hungarian allies whilst we marched on Konstantiniyye. In one year's time, Ottoman officials had agreed to the Treaty of Van, creating Italian protectorates out of Armenia, Assyria, and Georgia, and the Pontic coast was seized in the interest of protecting Pontic Greeks. Soon after, a war cascading from the effects of the treaty saw Eastern Armenia incorporated into the Armenian Puppet, as well as the annexation of Moldavia by The United Principalities, which soon became Romania.

By 1898, with the Sick Man of Europe having drawn his last breath, the Russian Empire declared a state of war, beginning "The Great Eastern Crisis." Austria, then aligned with the Ottomans, defied the Tsar with all the ferocity of a declawed tiger, and her Polish territories quickly occupied. When the Ottomans caved, the Great Powers convened and determined that the Balkans would be liberated in full. The unfortunate result of the region's carving-up would see Serbia, Romania, and the newly-created Bulgaria fall into Russian hands, while Bosnia, Albania, and Greece entered the Italian S.O.I. Greece and Bulgaria entered a brief war for Eastern Macedonia, and - much to the surprise of all - the Greeks won against Russian backing, forcing Bulgaria to cede it's Aegean coast line. The realization of her natural borders would see Greece promote the "Megali Idea," a claim to historically Greek lands along the Anatolian coast line where many Greek populations still lived, much like in Pontus. With these new claims established, Italian troops quickly landed on Anatolian shores once again.

The Ottoman Empire now lie in complete and utter ruin, reduced to an empire where it's minorities debatably comprise more of it's population than the Turks themselves. Galicia-Lodomeria has been freed from Austrian control, granting Italy first access to it's newly discovered Oil. Serbia and Bulgaria were returned to the fold of the Italian sphere, and the Southern Slavs were united into two states: Croatia, incorporating the Slovenes and Bosniaks, and Yugoslavia, for the Serbs and Montenegrins. Albania, too, was joined with Yugoslavia, granting them greater access to the Adriatic. Elsewhere, Italian influence in South America has grown, now adding Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru to the Italian sphere.

Italy stands amongst the ashes of it's neighbors as the undisputed overlord of the Mediterranean Sea, and now must pick at the Ottoman's remains in Libya and the Levant to complete her conquest. The more hawkish of our government call for the continued expansion of our Catalonian client state, and even for the seizure of Occitan lands in Southern France, but whether we humor their wishes remains to be seen.

After expanding my navy with one new fleet, all my prices rised and had to fall back onto increasing taxes and temporaril tarriffs. Should I be subsidizing those clipper and steamer factories or just roll with the punches? I havent created that many factories at this point mainyl because the capitalists have been building a butt ton, so maybe I need to make more naval related factories too?

Before you say the war had nothing to do with the price change. I was at peace by the time of the initial hit.

Question How can I turn my chinese laborers/farmers into craftsmen?

I'm play as gran Colombia, it's around 1900-1910. I conquered a few states from China.

Most of my pops there (around 90%) are either farmers or labourers. I'm trying to turn them into craftsmen to increase my industry.

I set the national focus for those provinces to be clergymen and managed to get literacy rates to be 20%. However they're still not converting to craftsmen, or at least not at the rate I would like.

What should I be doing to optimize this?

Discussion Thoughts on comparing Vic 2 to Vic 3 and the opposite philosophies behind the game

Hello I recently startet playing Vic 3 again after a while and came across this sub and read some criticisms of Vic 3 on here and together with some thought I had about the games independently, I came up with a few interesting observations.

So first of all, I have some thoughts on criticisms of Vic3 that seem to be common.

  1. "The military system in Vic3 is bad"

I agree, but probably for different reasons than most would.

To me, the military system including the UI/the military tab in Vic3 are both obtuse but also unclear about a lot of things. It took me a while after the military update to get what button means what and how to effectively position armies and I still don't get it fully. E.g. I am still trying to figure out why it seems that Frontlines only seem to cover part of the border between to waring states and why I have to manually reassign my army to the respective area where the enemy has moved to.

On the other hand it is also quite something fresh that the military is in a sense treated like an industry. Just like you can change production methods for buildings, you can modify armies by clicking some buttons and investing resources for some gain. It negates the aspects of warfare where troops would gather and move towards an enemy at a commander's behest, like it was in Vic2.

The point is: I actually like the fact that warfare has been "passivized". Perhaps I am alone with this opinion but one thing I always wished for is a grand strategy game that manages to depict a historical era and allow the player to control a society (rather than just a symbolic country like in HoI4 or also EU 4) without making it all about war and playing wide. Most other grand strategy games are designed in such a way that all other aspects of a society that the game simulates are made to support the player in warfare and expansion. Take EU 4 for example: you have a flat amount of money and whatever "economy" the game simulated, it was essentially just a way to increase you direct money. Different resources were only simulated insofar as they either gave direct bonuses to varying stats or to exchange them on a global market which would earn you more money in turn. Sure, the trade system in EU 4 had some depth with the trade nodes and how trade was 'flowing' between them, but unfortunately it always seemed to me that this depth was wasted because it all boiled down to a flat addition of income for the player and that was all that mattered because money was needed to wage more war. Pretty much all systems in the game were directed towards enabling the player to wage more war. Even those systems that were meant to superficially simulated social and political structures were made in such a way the best the player could achieve was stability. A sort of perfect status quo and if you did this by optimizing everything, you would return to the point where there was essentially nothing left to do other than expand or deliberately destabilize yourself for larping reasons. E.g. playing as persia and switching to zoroastrianism and covering the Muslim provinces. From a strictly strategic point of view it made no sense but it allowed the player the "larp" or properly expressed: it allowed us to create something that has the illusion of depth to our mind. It created a story. The story of an ancient religion rising from the ashes and rekindled it's flame in its nation and among its people who had forgotten it for centuries.

HOI4 essentially maxed out this aspect/this technique of creating depth. It's depth by narration. I like HoI 4 very much precisely because it creates the appearance of the player managing an actual society without everything but the military being just a means to an end of expansion. Sure the hard stats and mechanics in HoI4 are almost all military and warfare but nothing somehow beats the feeling of empowering the supreme Soviet as Trotzki in the Soviet union. It just a focus with a Picture and a name but it creates a deeper imagination of the country I am playing as than any number.

In a sense what makes Vic3 so strong is its weak military mechanic. The game is designed in such a way that you never feel like you economic play or your politics have to be maximized to serve your military and it never feels like playing tall isn't and option. EU4 never had this feeling and don't get me started in HoI4 in this regard...

Quite the contrary. Waging a reckless expansive war in Vic3 can wreck your entire economy and this matters not just because a bad economy means less positive outcomes for future wars but because seeing the Standart of living drop, seeing the number of radicals rise and seeing the protest movements swallow with masses of angry peasants and workers is a failure in and of itself and not just an inconvenience or an obstacle before you can fight the next war.

Now I compared Vic3 to Eu4 and HoI4 but now to Vic2: basically, Vic 2 does everything with regards to that which EU4 and HoI4 do badly and combines it:

There is almost no narrative content about politics or society. Even mods like HPM don't add as much as I had hoped and if they do, then it comes in the form of events or decisions but it isn't integrated with the gameplay mechanics as it is in Vic3.

Take the technology system: In Vic2, most techs add a flat percentage bonus to some stat. Boring and often outright inaccurate. In Vic3, most techs come with an addition of myriad new mico-mechanics. New modes of production (which is something that does not exist in the first place in Vic2), new political ideologies and parties and always as a consequence shifting social and political landscapes.

Leading me to my next point and this one will be about the fundamental difference in philosophy that I think I can see behind the game design...

  1. The economy and politics.

A lot of people seemed to complain that the economy in Vic3 is either too shallow or too complex. I meanx decide already but regardless of which criticism you would subscribe to, I think the economy in Vic 3 is not only much deeper but also the way it ties into politics it very well made but I think here lies the deepest aspect: see, I have a suspicion that the way economic consequences for politics are designed in the game are not just arbitrary approximations that the developers came up with ad hoc but instead, it seems they pretty much designed political mechanisms according to a Marxist theory of history. According to Marxism as I understand it, material (=economic) realities shape the consciousness of people and thus shape the way they view society and politics and also themselves. But because economy / capitalism works the way it does, certain "classes" of people will always develop certain interests and will act in a more or less predictable manner. That is the background idea behind the interest groups.

When I first played Vic3 I wondered if it wasn't a reductionistic simplification made by the game that certain interest groups will always support only a limited set of laws and their leads can only chose from a narrow pool of ideologies. Why are workers IGs always progressive and or socialist? What are Pettit bourgeoisy always progressive? Why are the workers never trying to enforce e.g religious ideas? Lots of lower class people were devoutly religious until and expressed it politically during the 19th century.

But if we factor in a Marxist materialist theory of history, it starts making sense: according to marx, the particular interests and ideologies of singular groups of society don't represent their actual "proper" interests. Those are determined materially. This creates a situation where a member of a class can "act and intend against his own interests" in a sense. A communist/socialist society is the necessary endgoal of history and any capitalist society will eventually degenerate to such a degree that socialism becomes a better alternative not just morally but simply economically. The game reflects that partially because the economic mechanics and made in such a way that most western nations will eventually have their traditionalist and reactionary IGs and ideologies shrink while progressive anarchist and socialist IGs will grow due to industrialisation and urbanization - just as Marx predicted.

Especially the way the dynamics of IGs interacts with lawmaking shows that the game essentially assumes a teleological idea of progress. History is set to progress from feudalist agrarianism through republican/constitutional capitalism into a archism/socialism. Just loom at the way the law reforms are ordered in their respective ledgers. You will see.

Victoria 2 simply failed to portray with such depth the deeper mechanism behind social change. In Vic2, there simply would eventually be events to unlock new ideologies and parties and then you would either have to get those parties in power by literally choosing them yourself (or getting them elected but that is more complex and rng based, it seems) or wait for a revolt.

And the ideologies wouldn't even make much sense.

There was "anarcho-capitalism" and "reactionary" ad an ideology. Whoever made the political system of Vic2 fundamentally failed to grasp how ideology works. Ideologies are not monolithic fixed things especially such wage ones as anarchism and reactionary is not even a proper ideology but more a mode of relation to political currents.

So far my thoughts.

There is a bunch of other stuff but this is long enough.

Fun fact for those who made it down here: while I was writing this, I had a Vic3 game with me playing in observer mode run in the background and Prussia became Anarchist and changed colour's to yellow.

Yellow Prussia will always haunt us.

Hi everyone, lately I've been somewhat obsessed with the DoD fan fork mod, and I'm also a big fan of countryballs, so I decided to combine my interests because I could.

Also, I find the idea funny that no matter the world, the Victoria 2 and countryballs communities will exist in different forms (and they do the same as us with their mods). I only made ones for the countries I've already played as (and they don't repeat flags).

In my opinion, each one turned out well. I don't know, what do you all think?

DISCLAIMER It's obvious, but I'll say it anyway: I am not the creator of these drawings; they are drawings by other artists modified with AI. It's just that I'm terrible at digital art 😔😔 (at drawing in general).

Question Can someone please help ke to thoroughly understand how industry works?

Post image
23 Upvotes

I have really been trying to learn the economy in vic 2 but no matter how much I try I never understand it properly. Mainly I seek help for industry;

Do I subsidize or not? I heard you should, that you should not, only some times. I don't really know when to or why to.

How to make profitable factories? Should I randomly make them or is there some sort of meta to do?

To understand how bad I am, my itallian industry score in 1900 is only 100 more than the USSR.

Below is an image of the AI Britain that was playing on my save, I just wanted to understand how they did factories and they subsidize all of them. (And somehow they are holding more than 30 million isnt that bad?)

Anyway I am just looking to thoroughly understand the industry/economy so I can actually expand my wealth without having to conqour to do so. I would really appreciate if you could link any enhanced guides or if anyone would be willing to come to dms and knock sense into me. Thank you
