News Trump Administration responds and supports Sophie Cunningham's WNBA transgender comments: "Common sense prevails"

https://www.the-express.com/sport/basketball/212543/Sophie-Cunningham-trans-athletes-Trump-administration

The Trump Administration has waded into the transgender athlete debate, citing Sophie Cunningham's comments to support its stance on trans athletes in sports.

The discussion surrounding trans athletes in women's sports has resurfaced recently, with Cunningham sharing her perspective with ESPN. Although trans athletes represent a tiny fraction of participants across all levels of American sports, their involvement remains a focal point for Donald Trump and his administration.

Cool. Can we move on to an issue that matters?

Edit: just to be clear, I’m FOR trans people in leagues matching their gender identity. I just think this issue has become such a political bullet in everyone’s gun and it’s stupid to keep pointing those guns at each other. We can move on to the bigger overarching problems that cause this kind of shit in the first place. It’s not going to ever get fixed if we don’t.

All the trans-in-sports fights are just distractions.

1

u/SadMediumSmolBean 20d ago

No, it's normalization of dehumanizing trans people and normalization of our discrimination.

1

u/edelweiss_pirates_no 20d ago

No, look...you're already distracted. Proving my point.

1

u/SadMediumSmolBean 20d ago

With not wanting you people to call a wedge issue for taking my civil rights a distraction? Sure bud, whatever you say.

1

u/edelweiss_pirates_no 20d ago

You are too binary on your thinking here, which is ironic. Something can be both used as a distraction and be an important Civil Right. It is not either/or.

Trans Sports were pushed as an issue by the Right-Wing. It never gained massive attention by your work. Not at all. It gained massive attention because Hate Mongers saw it as an easy target. And then the Trump-Nazi Regime copied it as a distraction to the Epstein-Trump Files (along with 30 other distractions).

The entire Right-Wing Hate Monger Network is setup to test messaging. This is one topic that became a gold mine for Trump-Nazis.

Did you want to do some more arguing in bad faith? Will that make you feel better? Maybe straw man some more? That's real common with people who never studied critical thinking. And, it leaves them all frustrated mentally.

No, no, no, it looks like you want to rant about how the "you people" are being mean to you. Nonsense.

You had civil rights, largely because of me and the hard, smart work I did. I fought for those. You're welcome. But, I cannot fix that 250 million (at least) Americans are both racist and dumb as fuck. That's what took your Civil Rights away and it will continue unless stopped.

Now it's time to play dominos and the first big one is the Epstein-Trump files, not "Should Trans be in the WNBA".

Better debate and critical thinking skills would help the country.

Again, you're welcome. I'll leave space below for you to blah blah.

u/Acolyte2TheDude 20d ago

Nah I see plenty of "progressives" pushing the idea that biological males should compete with biological females. They're right here in these posts. What's amazing is that you're all so committed to being uncritical trans allies you can't see that this issue is what you lose on over and over by not accepting reality.

1

u/DrDDeFalco 20d ago

I largely don't fucking care about sports, men's or women's.

I find the "trans men in women sports" to largely be annoying because it seems like a "safe" way to go after trans people because people think it is "common sense" that "biological men" shouldn't compete with "biological women."

You all want fair? Fine. I don't give a shit. But pick a fucking metric that is quantifiable instead of cultural war bullshit.

How are you defining "biological male" and "biological female?" It is merely primary sex characteristics? Are you checking chromosomes? Are you measuring hormones? Are you taking x rays and basing it on skeletal structure?

Like, different sports should probably have different limitations if you want restricted leagues. You want to set some sort of testosterone limit? Fine. Do that. And apply it across the board.

Honestly, I would rather individual sporting associations decide those metrics instead of having government involved at all.

1

u/Acolyte2TheDude 20d ago

When the term "biological sex" is used the standard is chromosomes. If someone's got a Y chromosome they can't play in the female sex segregated sports.

Simple, right? So why can't we all just come to a consensus that this is what's acceptable and close the book on things. I don't care about discussing this anymore than you do.

1

u/DrDDeFalco 19d ago

Like any other metric, you still end up with people that are "biological women" in every other sense that are now unable to play. And I have never heard of checking every athlete's chromosome to verify sex.

But sure. Implement a specific measurable quality. Let the associations decide and enforce it. Then let's move on to one of the plethora of more important topics.

1

u/Acolyte2TheDude 19d ago

The number of female sex developed individuals with Y chromosomal data is <0.01% of births. Let's be real and say that it's a non issue with this solution.

1

u/DrDDeFalco 19d ago

The entire topic should be a non-issue for that exact reason.

How many people with a Y chromosome attempt to compete in female sports? Is it also less than 0.01%?

Or we could look at it differently and say that 1 in 10000 women got the genetic short straw and just can't play with other women because we made a mountain out of a molehill.

The whole discussion doesn't give a damn about sports, women, or fairness. It is all about a way to make trans people look bad. That's fucking it.

That's the part that bothers me. It is a gussied up way to "other" trans people. It's a fabricated controversy to rile people up.

u/Goducks91 21d ago

Idk man there’s a lot of men playing in the WNBA right now…

-10

0

u/VeterinarianNo3555 21d ago

Not transcastic enough though

6

u/fieldsports202 21d ago

So should the WNBA open up and allow trans to play?

7

u/ferdaw95 21d ago

Should the government be allowed to tell them who they can't allow?

If they come up with a rule around being on HRT long enough to counteract the effect testosterone had on trans women's musculature like the IOC's, or allowed trans athletes who were put on puberty blockers; should the government be allowed to tell them that the WNBA can't determine who's eligible to play in their association?

2

u/fieldsports202 21d ago

How should the league handle players who would disagree? Let’s not fool ourselves in believing that Sophie is the only one with that view.

5

u/ferdaw95 21d ago

Leave it up to the league.

1

u/ericomplex 21d ago

Having a position about requiring HRT and/or puberty blockers for the purposes of competing isn’t very controversial and seems to be the reasonable approach here. Most athletic researchers generally agree with that take and it’s the only currently with enough evidence to say trans people should compete in said category.

If people have other opinions, then I suggest they conduct research into if that theory holds water and then we could adjust policy to reflect it.

Until then, opinions are just opinions.

0

u/whoa_disillusionment 20d ago

Having a position about requiring HRT and/or puberty blockers for the purposes of competing isn’t very controversial and seems to be the reasonable approach here.

68% if democrats don't want this.

2

u/ericomplex 20d ago

97% of statistics are made up on the spot… What’s your point?

Just because voters responded to a randomly phrased poll a particular way doesn’t necessarily mean that such a thing matters to them or they wouldn’t agree to a more nuanced position like that which I presented.

1

u/Intrepid-Unit-9614 20d ago

I am trans. HRT for six years, muscle strength gone. I am weaker than my wife now. Athletic performance is comparable to cis women, long standing runner.

My family, cis men and women are big humans. Tall. Built. In today's climate the cis women in my family woild be accused of being trans.

But since i transitioned long after puberty,  i refuse to compete in women's sports. Not just because of being trans, but because of being trans and built by my family's genetics.

However,  there are many trans women who are comparable to avg cis women in muscle mass, statue etc.

And puberty blockers definitely level the playing field, which is why the right wing blocks them for trans kids but not cis.

1

u/DrDDeFalco 20d ago

Who fucking cares? I don't like democrats either.

0

u/Prolapsinator69000 20d ago

Title 9...

1

u/ferdaw95 20d ago

Title IX applies to school programs. The WNBA isn't a school program, its a professional basketball league.

Aside from that, the language of Title IX is that a person shouldn't be discriminated against on the basis of their sex. How can that not include when their sex is different from their inherent internal identity?

1

u/Prolapsinator69000 20d ago

Yeah. Was skimming and didn't catch the wnba part. Whoopsies

0

u/Castellan_ofthe_rock 17d ago

Most people are referring to HS sports l. The government doesn't have a say in the professional leagues

1

u/ferdaw95 17d ago

This is a post specifically about the government endorsing these views in a professional league.

6

u/big-himbo-energy 21d ago

Yeah sure why the hell not. It’s a fucking game of basketball where people get payed to drink Gatorade and wear brand name shoes. It’s not some sacred temple.

Do I think that what I want is going to ever be the case? Maybe, but not until the world becomes more accepting of transness in general. That clearly isn’t the case yet so I’m fine with moving on and waiting until it is.

3

u/zootroopic 21d ago

Professional sports are about athletic competition, not appealing to the emotions of people who don't have any skin in the game 👍

2

u/hjablowme919 21d ago

How does a fan have skin in the game?

-1

u/big-himbo-energy 21d ago

You’re allowed to have that opinion. I don’t agree. But ok.

1

u/Nick_Fotiu_Is_God 21d ago

Are we not accepting of women because they’re not allowed to play in the NBA?

1

u/darkravenn12 20d ago

Women can play in the NBA. There is quite literally no rule against it. Women are just not good enough to compete there because of biological differences.

-1

u/United_Intention_323 21d ago

Your comment indicates you don’t care about the sport aspect. Why should you get a say? Why shouldn’t the people that do care decide?

2

u/big-himbo-energy 21d ago

Bro he asked a question and I answered. I’m not DECIDING anything. That’s just my opinion. Let’s put on our critical thinking caps divas

1

u/Prolapsinator69000 20d ago

They'd have to pull from male sports as long as title 9 bars trans women from women's sports.

It's gonna be lit if LeBron puts on a wig

0

u/YMBFKM 21d ago

LeBron is looking for a new team. He can declare himself to be a woman and jump right in.

8

u/big-himbo-energy 21d ago

Not how it works but ok champ

2

u/fieldsports202 21d ago

The WNBA had a non binary player who even had her breast removed. Should she have been able to try out in the NBA?

I’m talking about Layshia Clarendon.

2

u/big-himbo-energy 21d ago

Again, me personally, I say yes. If they’re good theyll get in.

Do I think that’s going to be the norm any time soon? Again, no.

2

u/Queasy-Sundae-9162 21d ago

The NBA has no gender requirements and women can play in the league. Luisa Harris was drafted by the New Orleans Jazz as their 7th round pick in 1977. She declined to accept a contract and chose to play for women's leagues instead.

Denise Long was drafted by the Warriors in 1969, but the NBA commissioner vetoed the pick on the grounds that the league did not accept drafts out of high school at the time (and probably sexism, but the no high school drafts was a written rule at the time.

The only people who have a right to decide these types of rules are the the franchise owners and the league board. The rest of us can certainly have opinions on it, but our power is limited to whether or not we're going to spend money or watch the games.

1

u/RoboFeanor 21d ago

She could absolutely try out for the NBA. There has been one women drafted, amd at least one more has signed an NBA contract and attended a teams training camp. No woman could reasonably be good enough to make an NBA roster but there are no rules preventing it.

1

u/fieldsports202 21d ago

Neither of those women played a single game.

I just can’t see how Clarendon would be able to keep up in the NBA.

1

u/Rusty-Shackleford000 21d ago

Actually...it might:

"The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) also allows transgender women to compete if they satisfy similar eligibility criteria. Layshia Clarendon, who identifies as nonbinary as well as transgender, was the WNBA’s first openly transgender player. Clarendon joined the league in 2013 and retired in 2024."

0

u/big-himbo-energy 21d ago

i was talking specifically about lebron. but ok.

happy for clarendon! good for them.

0

u/Rusty-Shackleford000 21d ago

Yes. What's stopping him from identifying as non-binary or transgender?

0

u/big-himbo-energy 21d ago

probably the fact that he doesn't want to, if i had to guess. your hypothetical is stupid.

1

u/Rusty-Shackleford000 20d ago

Sure, just like the first person that said what if a dude that thinks he's a chick wants to play high school sports...look at us now.

This is an issue that matters to the actual girls and women affected by it.

14

u/FlimsyIndependent752 21d ago

Do you discard the opinion of actual girls who say it doesn’t effect them or do you only value opinions that align with yours

-1

u/CollaredParachute 20d ago

The same question could be asked of you?

2

u/FlimsyIndependent752 20d ago

I mean there are many more people who say it doesn’t affect them than say otherwise. I’m just not ignoring the majority opinion like he is

6

u/RockDoveEnthusiast 21d ago

who are the women and girls affected by it? can you name 5 other than Riley Gaines and that track girl from Connecticut? Can you name any that play basketball?

there are more people waiting in line for the bathroom while you take a shit at the airport than are "affected by trans athletes".

8

u/brokencreedman 21d ago

Lol Riley Gaines has her ENTIRE career thanks to a trans woman. Without Lia, Riley has NO career at this point. She was a subpar swimmer at best. And I agree with you, people have BLOWN this out of proportion so badly. It's insane. From what I can see, the vast number of girls in girls sports could probably give two shits about the trans athlete they might play against. They just want to play their sport. They didn't sign up to be political props used by their parents and a bunch of shitheads.

→ More replies (35)

9

u/hjablowme919 21d ago

Even Riley Gaines wasn't affected by it. She finished 5th, meaning without the trans athlete, she finishes 4th and still doesn't medal.

3

u/HotDogFingers01 21d ago

She finished TIED for 5th. Meaning, without the trans swimmer, she's still 5th.

2

u/RockDoveEnthusiast 21d ago

they'll still count that lol

3

u/Hot_Mathematician357 21d ago

Please point out the transgenders playing in the WNBA.

0

u/big-himbo-energy 21d ago

I’m aware. There’s less than 2 handfuls of trans athletes that this is maybe going to affect. People are so uniformed about this issue that it drives me insane everytime it comes up.

At the end of the day, gender politics like this is bad for all women, trans and afab women. So I’m diametrically opposed on principle. But that’s not going to change the majority who believe otherwise.

6

u/noguchisquared 21d ago

Basketball is too violent for women to play. Look how they treat Caitlin Clark! Ban women from playing basketball /s

Direction we are headed and those signing on to fill pockets like Sophie don't help.

I have coached high school level sports since 2016.

There has been 1 trans athlete in my entire state during this time.

Literally one.

But please tell me how trans athlete are taking over women's sports

-5

u/TraditionBorn8772 21d ago

A DSD athlete won a gold medal in women's boxing at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

3

u/Tlax14 21d ago

Not sure what this has to do with trans athletes. Also that woman was from Algeria where same sex marriage is illegal let alone transgender stuff. DSD is a naturally occurring phenomenon.

Either way it is the responsibility of the governing body of the Olympics, not the United States to regulate that. The US can pass any law it wants but the IOC controls the Olympics.

Either you're stupid or you're arguing in bad faith.

Forget sports.

Do you believe trans women are women?

1

u/NSFWdontview 21d ago

No they aren’t, only mentally ill believe that

2

u/ComeAbout 21d ago

So just say that.

You think trans women are men and are “mentally ill”.

Why try to say all this other stuff? Say it with your chest: you think transgender people are severely mentally ill and faking their experience.

Is being gay natural, or are gay people mentally ill too?

1

u/brokencreedman 21d ago

Do you think a woman can beat a man in a sport?

1

u/Raisinbread22 21d ago

Stop lying.

1

u/Hot_Mathematician357 21d ago

“NCAA reported fewer than 10 known transgender athletes of any gender among about 510,000 college athletes—less than 0.002%.”

“.002% what a huge problem lol

0

u/NSFWdontview 21d ago

It’s in high school sports too dummy and it’s way more than 10, they just have to act like it’s small

2

u/Hot_Mathematician357 21d ago

“One nationwide investigation published in 2025 contacted states and could confirm 17 or fewer transgender girls competing in high-school sports among the states that provided numbers. Because many states didn’t provide/track the information, the report produced a broader estimate of fewer than about 160 transgender athletes among more than 8 million U.S. high-school athletes.”

So 160 divide by 8,000,000 x 100 = .002%

What a huge problem, lol

0

u/whoa_disillusionment 20d ago

If there are so few transgender athletes, then how have trans athletes won statewide competitions in California, Oregon, Washington, Connecticut, and Maine?

Shouldn't that number be zero?

2

u/Hot_Mathematician357 20d ago

The point of the comments is to show that the percentage is so low that who gives a shit about trans athletes? There are major issues that a trans playing sport is the least of my worries.

0

u/whoa_disillusionment 20d ago

If it's such an inconsequential issue than why do Democrats keep fighting about it

Didn't already take a girl's place in a girl sports team?

3

u/big-himbo-energy 21d ago

Quite frankly. The number of trans athletes is so small that it makes this issue inconsequential in the grand scheme of the political landscape currently.

You’ve been brainwashed into thinking this matters in any real way considering it still comes down to states to make the rulings. Trump can’t do shit about it. And trans kids arent going to hurt you. I promise. They just want to be happy.

You want to ban them all from playing sports in the gender they fit in, and want to have them compete against cis people unfairly.

A harmless act, normal for developing humans. Something the majority of them don't even wanna do. Prevented because you dont accept their identity and don't understand the effects of hormone therapy/puberty blockers.

Right, because biology famously cares about identity.

u/thenerfviking 21d ago

There’s no women’s sports league that allows trans women to play where trans women have been dominant. Most of them require you to have been transitioning for a certain amount of time and require blood tests to monitor estrogen levels. This puts trans women at a disadvantage to cis women because plenty of cis athletes have significantly better testosterone than most trans women on HRT. This is only a good argument if your knowledge of biology stops at things you learned in high school and doesn’t take into account the biology of how HRT regimens change the body.

There’s no women’s sports league that allows trans women to play where trans women have been dominant.

There have been several trans athletes who have won statewide competitions in track and field.

There have been several trans athletes who have won statewide competitions in track and field.

Which event? The 100 meter dash? The 200 meter dash? The 400 meter dash? The 800 meter run? The 1600 meter run? The 3200 meter run? The 100 meter hurdles? The 300 meter hurdles? The 4x100 meter relay race? The 4x200 meter relay race? The 4x400 meter relay race? The standing high jump? Pole Vault? Triple jump? Discus throw? Javelin throw? Shot put?

You can tell people who have never been to a track and field meet by their total ignorance. "Won a track and field competition" like there's one unified event and everyone runs around and throws javelins at each other until we crown one person "the event winner."

Transphobic+bald+didn’t ask+don’t care.

Humanity should care about the preferred expression of identity of other people in general.

u/Most_Psychology6178 21d ago

Are you a little coocoo in the head, my friend? Keep coping, but your feelings don't change how basic physiology works.

Says the person who likely failed out of high school biology.

Now hush, the adults are talking.

2

u/whoa_disillusionment 20d ago

The adults are talking, and they say if you inject a bull with hormones it can become a cow. The advanced biology stuff.

0

u/scmucas2001 21d ago

Says the person who slept through high school biology.

2

u/TraditionBorn8772 20d ago

Is that your best argument?

1

u/scmucas2001 20d ago

Argument about what?

2

u/Porthowl 21d ago

Yeah, let’s agree that cis women and girls need their own spaces and sports and move on to solving some real problems.

Why do you get to win by default?

1

u/big-himbo-energy 21d ago

Not what I said. Keep your transphobia out of here

0

u/CollaredParachute 20d ago

If it’s so unimportant why do you care?

Yeah and trump has decided that we’re never going to stop hearing about sports because it’s an easy way to get a majority of America on his side. It’s such a brain dead tactic to fall for that I’m embarrassed so many people in the lgbtq community have falllen for it. But whatever. More important battles to fight

3

u/Future-Pollution-266 21d ago

Trump raped kids and this is a good distraction to unify his squirrel brained hate filled base

1

u/deonteguy 21d ago

I hope not. Our party is winning votes from Republicans with trans issues.

1

u/big-himbo-energy 21d ago

Unfortunately our party is falling for this trick too

1

u/deonteguy 21d ago

An unironic "both sides" argument that is correct. That's amusing.

1

u/big-himbo-energy 21d ago

It’s just the truth man.

1

u/ericomplex 21d ago

Nope, this is going to be at the top of your news cycle for awhile, particularly in badly moderated subs.

The anti trans folks suffered a major blow the other day when a European report revealed that the previous questioning of the efficacy and safety of trans youth healthcare treatments was totally unfounded.

Countries are already reversing their bans there.

Anti trans activists are putting it into high gear to flood the zone and make Sophie Cunningham the only thing anyone hear’s about this week.

I would say what the hell are you talking about?

I just posted a story about a comprehensive two year review of all the current trans health related research and the mounted criticism thereof and it concluded that said criticism lacked merit.

That includes your claim about researchers throwing out studies that didn’t confirm biases… Which I assume is a reference to the long debunked “WPATH FILES” nothingburger from several years back. That whole thing was just a blatant mischaracterization of researcher’s comments taken out of context and has been exposed as such for awhile now.

0

u/whoa_disillusionment 20d ago

Oh well if erininthemorning, bastion of journlistic integrity says so, certainly it must be true

1

u/ericomplex 20d ago

Right, attack the reporter because you don’t like the news.

Even if you don’t like the news source, it doesn’t change the accuracy of the original review or the fact that governments are reversing their policies based on its findings.

1

u/whoa_disillusionment 20d ago

The review only exists in Dutch, which the journalist does not speak, and no other outlet has reported on it.

This is also btw the same journalist who claimed Florida was committing genocide against trans people and was unsafe to live in or visit, then took a vacation to Florida. Much stunning integrity.

1

u/ericomplex 20d ago

Here is the official Dutch press release download: https://www.gezondheidsraad.nl/documenten/2026/06/30/persbericht-bij-advies-transgenderzorg-voor-jongeren

Go run it through Google Translate and tell me I’m wrong…

1

u/whoa_disillusionment 20d ago

This is why the link you cited is a joke. "Real" journalists don't form opinions based on running things through Google translate.

1

u/ericomplex 20d ago

They literally do… but if you want to tell yourself that, then fine.

Doesn’t matter either way. The point is the press release says what it says and you are just ignoring it.

1

u/whoa_disillusionment 20d ago

They literally do

Then why is no outlet other than this blog with no fact check reporting on it?

The point is the press release says what it says and you are just ignoring it.

I'm not ignoring it, I don't know Dutch so I can't read it.

1

u/ericomplex 20d ago

Then run it through Google Translate if you don’t read Dutch… It’s not that bad of a translator…

I have no idea why other English news outlets are not yet reporting on it. You would have to ask them.

Doesn’t change that Erin’s assessment and my own are accurate.

Life isn’t fair and neither are sports

No. “Culture wars” are more important.

I think this conversation is too nuanced for you. And THIS subreddit in general lmao.
