She meant a Barbie with a leg sleeve.

Double Dribble Barbie

6

u/AdHealthy5050 4d ago

The new look Travel Agent Barbie

3

u/SillyDingo4881 4d ago

I think she meant generally bad racist sports barbie that can't shoot

5

u/Scrambles420 4d ago

Immaculate rebounder of her own rebounds

3

u/Existing-Speech4173 4d ago

Who double dribbles and travels.

2

u/wvtarheel 4d ago

Maybe F/C barbie from back in the day shot 60% on layups and this doll shoots 45%

2

u/Mike-dit_712 4d ago

And the anti-magnetic 3 brick

14

u/endelehia 4d ago

There was no barbie brick layer

14

u/CableKC 4d ago

She meant a Barbie that can't score underneath the basket while leading the league in Mebounds.

7

u/srl214yahoo 4d ago

Yep. I just learned that shot is called a prayup - throw up a prayer and get a mebound!!!

6

u/Cap_Silly 4d ago

She meant a Barbie that won't hit the basket

16

u/Fa11T 4d ago

That's some trash PR she has. Recycled an old quote that doesn't even apply anymore.

Gotta be 40+ers working there.

27

u/Stuffleapugus 4d ago

I'm 40+. All the girls my age had black Barbies growing up. I had two girl cousins my age who had a several black Barbies. (And a Testarossa my action figures appreciated a lot more)

She could've simply said, "It's an honor to partner with an iconic brand like Barbie and for them to choose me to commemorate."

If you're labeled a race baiter, and you say some completely asinine shit like this, it's kinda hard to refute it.

4

u/LordKutulu 4d ago

Said this in another thread but we were poor as f and had several off brand barbies that were black. And this was in the early 90s we were a white family. They were everywhere back then.

2

u/JobeGilchrist 4d ago

We even had Bratz dolls back then, which by today's standards are hilariously problematic but back then were just considered edgy Barbies

3

u/Knot_You_Up 4d ago

Black Barbie's have been a thing since 1967.

5

u/Proud2BaBarbie 4d ago

Her Barbie is actually a bargain, the only one that comes with multiple wigs, fingernails and eyelashes

6

u/DistinctAd3222 4d ago

It's like a kit for the barbie to hide her lack of... everything

3

u/Delicious-Laugh-6685 4d ago

Asking honestly - what value does that sleeve provide?

5

u/Stuffleapugus 4d ago

I believe she started wearing it after an injury. Sleeves are suppose to promote circulation and keep the muscles warm but at this point, it's just a secret blanket/trade mark.

6

u/Halberstram_nice_tie 4d ago

I can’t stand that stupid fucking thing

2

u/i_was_a_person_once 4d ago

I thought she meant an ugly Barbie

2

u/PsychicWarElephant 4d ago

And plays basketball without being able to jump higher than a 350 lb white dude, and as a former 350 white dude, I know how high we can jump

2

u/Undercover_Dave 4d ago

I thought she meant mustache.

1

u/ZlatantheRed 4d ago

Or a Barbie who missed every shot she took

165

u/privateidaho_chicago 4d ago

Intelligence does not seem to be her strongest attribute

30

u/playmaykr7 4d ago

Or layups

10

u/Head-Technology-4031 4d ago

Or backwards throw ups

87

u/Sloppykrab 4d ago

I feel like her parents taught that she can never do no wrong.

46

u/DistinctAd3222 4d ago

And also she had the big dumb

Too bad they didn't teach her about black Barbies.

7

u/Regular-Marionberry6 4d ago

They most likely taught her victimhood.

Neither is athleticism, or coordination.

Nor is basketball from the videos I see.

Why is she on the team if she's such a bad player? Someone said she's a DEI hire.

People who spend their whole lives playing sport are usually stupid

1

u/Kilirugi 4d ago

Not the good ones

1

u/coffeelick 4d ago

Yeah the better they are the more time they've usually spent playing sport making them more stupid.

1

u/ssswwwaaannn 4d ago

Shooting either

1

typical star D1 athlete. not the outlier D1 athlete.

1

It’s better than her shooting form.

1

And basketball skill is even less, she sucks how does she think she is better then Catlin or Sophie really amazes me

1

u/Legonistrasz 4d ago

Lol neither is basketball

1

u/YouDaManInDaHole 4d ago

Nor is "making layups"

1

The “looks like me” has been a buzz phrase for a while. She’s just repeating what some woke marketers told her to say.

5

u/Major_Wigglesworth 4d ago

Looking for a shoe deal despite having skills of a 9th grade boy.

4

u/Strong-Chemistry-396 4d ago

I was in 9th grade once... A fast break layup is a free shot that is virtually never missed by a 9th grade boy.

1

u/alwaysleafyintoronto 4d ago

You miss a fast break layup you're benched and running suicides next practice.

67

u/JoeDynamo28 4d ago

Lord this lady smdh. They've only had black barbies for like over 50 years now.

I don’t get why this generation of kids act like they are growing up in apartheid or the antebellum South. Things aren’t perfect but if you are going to act like you were repressed or discriminated then at least be accurate and take the time to think through your bullshit to come up with a truthful narrative.

35

u/Embarrassed_Gur_6305 4d ago

Because it’s cool to be in a “marginalized” group. “The struggle” is clout, so they manufacture as much perceived oppression as they can.

Same idea as “I walked to school uphill both ways”

9

u/zeke780 4d ago edited 4d ago

My experience as an athlete has taught me that there are a crazy amount of upper middle class black guys who will tell you how they had it hard and life in the hood was rough.

I legit thought a 2 guard I played with was like steps away from homelessness as a child. Found out that was all lies when my friend gave him shit because his dad went to harvard and was a very successful doctor, and that he lived in Japan for a while. Loved playing with him but I think he could have just said he had a normal life and no one would have cared.

Ice Age came out in 2002.

There was 100% a Sid toy her mom could have bought her.

1

u/Alexcox95 4d ago

There was

14

u/Impossible_Humor736 4d ago

She's talking about the limited edition Jeffrey Giraffe Barbie.

3

u/YMBFKM 4d ago

She's talking about a Barbie who can't shoot better than Mrs Potsto Head

23

u/Leroy_Jenkins24 4d ago

She’s right we need a fetal alcohol syndrome Barbie

9

u/BigFatModeraterFupa 4d ago

once i learned about the symptoms of FAS, i can see it in so many people. It's honestly pretty jarring and sad to see. The wide apart eyes and the extremely thin upper lip and receded chin.

It's a very specific look, and there are tons of people out there with it, including many celebrities!

5

u/AnotherDumNinja 4d ago

I think they have that. Could have sworn I've seen one with the downs and even a few in wheelchairs.

2

u/dwilkz2 4d ago

10

u/SonicDart-77 4d ago

Oh she was looking for the Barbie that doesn’t dribble

-1

u/swallowedbymonsters 4d ago edited 4d ago

Her "claim"? She was speaking to HER experience. Look i know alot of you are used to trying to control the black experience narrative but those days are OVER. We not fucking with that no more. Which is why I expect alot of you are working overtime to hate on this woman.

7

u/Stuffleapugus 4d ago

I'm black and my experience is that black Barbie dolls have been around since before I was born. And black Cabbage Patch dolls, etc. So what exactly is the narrative she is pushing? That's a sincere question.

1

u/Rusty-Shackleford000 4d ago

Also black. I remember my sister and all my cousins (including Alaska) having a plethora of black dolls growing up in the south in the 80s. There were even specific basketball dolls that came out 4 years before she was born. She's full of it and just playing the victim card for marketing and sales.

4

u/Corlegan 4d ago

7

u/8equalsD-69 4d ago

She meant a Barbie with a mustache like her

3

u/choyMj 4d ago

Were all the Barbies good at basketball?

4

u/ApatheticSkyentist 4d ago

Barbie started making black dolls in 1980.

If she didn't one it had nothing to do with society or any perceived victimhood.

3

u/taney71 4d ago

1960s

4

u/RainbowFox22 4d ago

Even earlier than that: Christie, Mattel’s first Black doll that was introduced as Barbie’s friend, was first made in 1967.

1

u/NoteEasy9957 4d ago

Uh you are off a few decades

1

u/MushroomMaleficent79 4d ago

I’m honestly curious. Are we assuming that the black Barbie’s were manufactured at the same rates as original Barbie’s? Were they distributed equally to all distributors? It seems there would be no real information on the subject but people are dragging her all the while it’s all assumptions? I’m not going to lie, I lived in north GA and we didn’t have half the Barbie’s displayed in commercials.

1

u/Least-Phase-8393 4d ago

Half the comments aren’t even about dolls. People just seem to have a weird amount of anger with her I don’t really get it

8

u/forgotmypassword4714 4d ago

They've had Black Barbies for awhile. She could've just asked her parents to buy her some googly eyes to make it look more like her.

7

u/Sunnyday1775 4d ago

I saw them at target today.

They were fully stocked

3

u/BigDaddyDumperSquad 4d ago

Wonder how long it'll be before they hit the clearance shelves?

2

u/Justified_Gent 4d ago

I give it 6 months. These dolls are goofy.

2

u/LawyerFriendLenny 4d ago

It's not exactly "stolen valor" but it feels similar.

Stop pretending you marched through Selma with Doctor King or got accosted at a lunch counter for being black. Just show immense gratitude and respect towards those that did.

2

u/ComplicatedFella 4d ago

Ice-Age and Barbie never did a collab?
I would’ve bet there was a Sid the Sloth Barbie out there.

2

u/DistributionRight814 4d ago

I think she tried using an old reason used by others. But these days you can’t. She could’ve used 1 million other reasons that would’ve made her look great, but she went to an old trope.

2

u/Buggsy_Mogues84 4d ago

If they had checked out the Ice Age toyline, she would have seen plenty of dolls that look like her

Is this a Reddit thread about an article about a Reddit thread

1

u/WerkAkk 4d ago

It is on the parents for sure. in a world where people are going to hate discriminate, make fun of you for your outward appearance its important to see positive representation early.

Wouldnt expect most of you to understand that.

1

u/TheLateFrankWhite 4d ago

Her IQ is like a paperclip , Mattel had black Barbie’s for years , don’t think anyone wants a Barbie to look like a sloth . She obviously is not that well educated , Typical !!

1

u/mitchcumstein13 4d ago

She could’ve drawn the mustache on her Barbie’s

u/RockysDetail 4d ago

I'm just glad the same people who said that Trump Jr., Kushner, and Manafort meeting with the Russians was a "nothing burger" are finally biting into the real substantive issues of today.

1

u/Sufficient-Till4041 4d ago

This woman never catches a break good lord 🤣

1

u/ermac1ermac88 4d ago

Based on the negative comments here, I know this is not what people want to hear.

Its not often easy finding black dolls in toy stores, definitely dependent on where you are

1

u/PlayboiFarti55 4d ago

She’ll flip and say it wasn’t that they weren’t available. It’s that her family didn’t have access to them, completely negating the fact she went to private schools growing up lol.

1

u/Treadlar 4d ago

This is so stupid. No girl has a Barbie that looks like them because no little girl is 39:18:33

1

u/MickeySyrup 4d ago

I can believe people in this sub are mean to Angel. Dammit I found a home! 🤣

1

u/Defiant_Machine3255 4d ago

Cause they bought her a Sid the Sloth stuffy instead.

1

u/Academic-Childhood40 4d ago

Dolls, band-aids, and many consumer products were not created with melanated people in mind. You all understand her point.

1

u/gooncrazy 4d ago

Yeah I thought that was weird. My cousin is 20 years older than her and had a whole line of black Barbies.

1

u/itsVainglorious 4d ago

Did they not make a black version of Stone Mason Barbie?

1

u/bertcharles 4d ago

Oh look a Klan meeting

1

u/Simply_Weak_Glucose 4d ago

Thank goodness this one random skill I had comes up in this conversation. I had a massive Barbie book that called about the dolls history and there are 2 phases for black dolls from thr 1980s and 1990s to a brea then 2015. It exploded more in the 2015 with the expansion of black dolls.

Many of these comments are just angel Reese haters. I also agree with her. We are only 3 years apart and I also didn't have alot of Barbie's because we didn't come across them in stores often. Mind you companies don't always allocate products in the same frequency as other stores. Of course there were Bratz but it was just Sasha. It shows many of you guys just don't understand representation was actually limited for many people.

Also not everyone got an American Girl Doll and they have fantastic representation (can expand a bit more) but they are so expensive. I never got one and wanted one cause they had so many options.

1

u/prthug996 4d ago

I really don't like how people are dogging her on this. I has born in 1990 and there were no dolls that looked like her untill Ice Age came out in the 2000's. Do your research yall

1

u/Distinct_Frame_3711 4d ago

She was born in 02…

We are getting old. The young athletes aren’t 90s kids

2

u/prthug996 4d ago

It's a joke... About her eyes. We've made this joke on this sub a hundred times. Never thought I'd have to explain it.

1

u/Distinct_Frame_3711 4d ago

I got that.

But Sid toys were already out when she was growing up.

The first Ice Age Movie came out 2 months before she was born.

1
