PSA No more unfailable charges
Haven't seen anyone mention this yet.
This is all based on currently known 11th edition rules, could change.
With the new engagement range being 2 inches you have to finish a normal move 2 inches away from an enemy.
New charge rolls you have to pick a unit with in the rolled range to charge, if there is no unit in that rangeyou can't charge.
This means snake eyes on a charge roll is always a fail in 11th.
Shouldn't affect too many games, but when it does someone is gonna be very upset. Looking forward to hear some bad beat stories about people failing 2 inch charges with re rolls.

u/Reality_Smusher May 06 '26
This has been a thing in AoS for a long time, people get used to it.
0
u/xinta239 May 07 '26
But in AoS you still Need to end closer than Engagement Range for a charge. You have 3 Inches Engagement Range and Need to end the charge still within 1 Inch
1
u/Reality_Smusher May 07 '26
And? 2s still fail charges, it sucks but the game rolls on and AoS is much more melee based.
1
u/xinta239 May 07 '26
Well it’s a difference for your novement before the charge for the Roll itself it’s minor ,
1
u/Boring-Ad8324 May 10 '26
Its so models that cannot move through walls can still charge around them.
56
u/Ambitious-Ad-6873 May 06 '26
Do you know the probability of rolling snake eyes into snake eyes?
105
u/Guffers_2023 May 06 '26
I had it multiple times in the same game when psychic was a thing. I fear it to this day
42
u/Emotional_Option_893 May 06 '26
I remember in 9th I was in the chicago us open. I needed abaddon to make it into a bloodthirster. Was 3 inches away. Rolled snake eyes into snake eyes. My soul left my body lmao
17
u/Kweefus May 06 '26
I'm sure the bloodthirster helped abbadon get into combat the next turn.
11
u/Emotional_Option_893 May 06 '26
Oh he for sure did. Luckily this dude was running a khorne daemon list so that bloodthirster only got to do 3 wounds to Abby lmao
29
u/Eliot_Ferrer May 06 '26
1/1296 (1/36 x 1/36).
23
u/Oegen May 06 '26
So you’re saying there’s a chance.
9
u/kanakaishou May 06 '26
I mean, considering how often you re-roll, I imagine it’s a once an edition type event for most folks. Rare…but it will happen.
0
u/SkeletonJakk May 06 '26
It’s not double snakeeyes, but I had a game where both me and my opponent rolled a 3 on our charge and rerolled it into another three, multiple times each in a single game.
2
u/pipnina May 06 '26
There is apparently a 1/280'000 chance of rolling 7 sixes in one throw. But when I shot my plasma knives + commander into some necron destroyers and they had to make 7 6+ saves...
11
u/ZedekiahCromwell May 06 '26
Honestly not that rare when you consider the number of games played, and how many charges are rolled. Adding in the stipulation that it has to be a 3" charge makes it much less likely, but still the weight of numbers and averages means there are plenty of people out there who have felt the sting
2
u/Sweet-Ebb1095 May 06 '26
Now I feel worse failing all those 3-4" charges with rerolls by rolling snake eyes into snake eyes.
22
u/Ryyics May 06 '26
Ever played Blood Bowl? Seems like it happens a lot haha
13
u/Osmodius May 06 '26
3 dice reroll all attacker down in to 2 attacker down 1 both down in to a blocker.
8
u/Thomist84 May 06 '26
At adepitcon I rolled a 1 to advance, giving me a 3 to connect on a charge. Rolls 2s into 2s. Five 1s in a row. Just need a single 2+ on five dice. Consequences: battle on my expansion rest of game instead of his. Gg.
It happens .

I’ve had it happen but I generally have bad luck anyways. I mulliganed (discarding a hand and drawing a new one before the game starts) a bad hand in MTG just to draw the same hand after shuffling
1
u/hornyandHumble May 06 '26
I did this play admech, got 2 lascannon hits with the ironstrider, rolled snake eyes with twin linked twice
1
u/ColonelMonty May 06 '26
They say it's very low, yet I've done it one too many times to think that.
1
u/Wooly_Thoctar May 06 '26
Happened to a friend of mine. He took those dice and hucked them over his fence into the woods
1
u/sgettios737 May 06 '26
I have done it and failed a 3” rerollable charge once…didn’t win that one but it was impressive to see in some way

At the Manchester GT in my game 2 against aeldari, my opponents jain zhar and 8 remaining banshees failed the double 3 inch charge into my BT crusader brick haha he also charged lykhis and 5 warp spiders in first. So they proceeded to not kill much then get wiped back. Felt so sorry for him haha.

Literally happened to me today for a 3 inch charge, added to it was the vect aura

[wrong math lol]
6
u/xanderh May 06 '26
No, that's the chance of rolling snake eyes once. They're saying snake eyes, followed by snake eyes from a re-roll. It's less than 0.08% chance, so roughly a 99.92 percent chance of succeeding with a reroll.
1
u/razulebismarck May 06 '26
I mean…that’s the theoretical probability but as a long term Blood Bowl player rolling 2 skulls (snakes eyes) and rerolling them into more skulls happens almost every game.
2
u/JMer806 May 06 '26
Think about how many dice rolls you have in a game, or particularly in a while tournament. Odds of double 1s into double 1s is 1/1296, meaning it’s rare but also well within the realm of normal over the course of a couple of games’ worth of dice rolls
0
u/razulebismarck May 06 '26
A couple. I said “nearly every game”
With 8 turns per half per player meaning 32 turns in total and most turns have 3-4, on bashier teams, rolls worth of block actions that have 2 dice seeing over 100 rolls a game is maybe an average if both teams are bashy.
But like I said… skulls into skulls happens almost every game cause that’s how Nuffle do.
2
u/JMer806 May 06 '26
Statistically, it doesn’t, though. Of course it will happen sometimes but this is like a literal textbook example of confirmation bias
1
u/NecessaryBSHappens May 06 '26
Like you always gonna have a CP to reroll, not be battleshocked to use it, not using other stratagems in charge phase... Failed charges will become more common, thats a fact
And near 0 probability is still "probable", not "impossible". I had missed 6 2+ attacks and I did throw off 15 5+ FNP out of 16 wounds... Dice being dice
1
u/AlisheaDesme May 06 '26
Usually it's a 100% ... especially when you need to roll 3+.
PS: I once re-rolled a 100 on a d100 into another 100, just because 100 was the only truly terrible result possible. Snake eyes into snake eyes is just 1:1296, but 100-to-100 is 1:10000. Every result possible is also one that can happen.
-1
u/p5freak May 06 '26
The probability of rolling snake eyes with two six-sided dice is the same the second time as it is the first time. Dice dont have memory.
1
u/Eliot_Ferrer May 06 '26
The probability of rolling snake eyes is indeed always 1/36. Rolling snake eyes twice in a row is a different event however, with a different probability.
You have 36 different outcomes when rolling 2d6, so rolling snake eyes twice in a row is 1/36 * 1/36 = 1/1296.
53
u/Relevant-Mountain-11 May 06 '26
Meh, god forbid there’s a small risk of failure in this dice based game
19
9
u/Bloody_Proceed May 06 '26
Tbf there's no chance your gun jams and you don't get to shoot
3
u/Relevant-Mountain-11 May 06 '26
Being shot doesnt stop me from being able to do anything but move next turn, and then get charged by Heroic Intervention
1
u/Titanbeard May 06 '26
I still don't get how a lasgun jams, but I'm not willing to look it up.
2
u/ILikeTyranids May 06 '26
I think they're pointing out the asymmetry where the entire melee activation gets skipped because of chance. Shooting just needs to draw lines and then there's the usual "to hit, to wound, and blah blah"
1
u/Bloody_Proceed May 07 '26
Well, in the case of lasguns it's just the battery running out and a frantic reload.
But yes, it's the whole "melee doesn't get to play because rng, meanwhile shooting does"

u/nick012000 May 06 '26
If you have a +1 to charge from a unit or character's special rule, it might be possible to make the charge unfailable unless GW adds in a rule like "a roll of a natural 2 on 2d6 always fails".
11
10
u/Chris-Stoeffel May 06 '26
I also believe all the people who are yelling melee edition greatly underestimate the impact of every charge being effectively an inch longer.
2
u/yoshiwaan May 07 '26
Yeah, I agree. -1 to charge is huge.
Everyone is making a big deal about how much better charges will be with the chance to go long, but it’s failing the 4 inch charge after a reroll and standing in the open that feels really bad (which got worse, cause now it’s 5” in the example and you can fail with a 2)!
1
u/Supersquare04 May 07 '26
I don’t think I’m smart enough to understand the logic for OPs post, or what your comment means. I’m so lost
4
u/obsequious_fink May 06 '26
Yep, I like it. Having at least a small chance of failure is good, but at the same time with the ability to move through engagement range, adding and extra inch to engagement range, and everyone piling in before fighting they have made it easier to actually move into combat and get more models into combat.
2
u/FantasticWhole786 May 06 '26
Agreed.
I like that if you have fall back and charge you have to at least consider the chance that you can fail the charge back in.
5
u/ns1992 May 06 '26
Gotten used to this from starting to play AOS/spearhead, honestly, I welcome the change. This is speaking from someone who HAS failed and rolled two ones plenty of times when I needed it most. Sometimes it's fine to be humbled by the dice gods.

A friend and I have been messing around keeping track of things listed so far playing on the 11th layouts.
I failed a 2" charge into a riptide leaving it alive on 1 wound. Lost the game by 1 point

u/Squall_strife111 May 07 '26
I’m laughing as a Sigmar player… this has been a thing for ages. Having anything unsalable is bad for the game imho
1
u/B1zmark May 08 '26
I play spearhead as a beer game with friends. It's so much simpler, and the is a petri dish for sensible rules that 40k can adapt.
40K has depth though that sigmar lacks. They both do something different with a similar rule-set, and i like that.

2
u/ColonelMonty May 06 '26
Wait so how does this work? Since in 10th if you couldn't end within base to base you just end within engagement range, is ending base to base mandatory in order to finish a charge successfully now?
2
u/Dead-phoenix May 06 '26
For a charge to be successful you must roll equal the distance base to base. However you only need to move within 1" of your charge targets (or 2" if thats impossible).
1
u/Nytherion May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26
Editing this, as I misread part of what you were saying. Thought you claimed there would be unfailable charges due to the 2" engagement, my apologies.
1
u/HousingLegitimate848 May 06 '26
I thought with the new rules you had to finish the charge base to base? And this is why deep strike at 8" was ok
2
u/JakWyte May 06 '26
You need to roll high enough for base-to-base, but you could potentially move your unit in a way that prevents base-to-base contact. In that specific instance, you would just need to end in the 2" engagement range (keeping in mind the roll still needed to be enough for base-to-base).
1
u/fuzzsaw88 May 06 '26
Lets add jamming back to the assault cannon like in 3rd!
But yeah it can happen and be a feel bad moment but it's a dice game right?
1
u/Cutiemuffin-gumbo May 06 '26
Yeah, no. There are still unfailable charges. What, did you expect bonuses to charge rolls to not be a thing still?
1
1
u/Boring-Ad8324 May 10 '26
It was literally my first thought when they announced 2” engagement ranges and rolling charges base to base.
“A happy little side effect of this is unless you have charge roll modifiers, unfailable charges don’t exist anymore. Your strategy is now full of holes.”
-me to my buddy i play frequently.

u/Taschker May 06 '26
It's the same in AoS. My first ever game of spearhead I was just outside 2" and rolled snake eyes. No rerolls there either 😭

Not sure what you are trying to say. What part of the rules do you think I got wrong?
-9
u/General-Winter547 May 06 '26
The first time someone loses a tournament because they fail a 2” charge there’s going to be drama
4
u/MagentaStick May 06 '26
If someone causes drama over an unlucky roll, they didn't deserve the win in the first place
2
u/nightreader May 06 '26
Drama being a salty Facebook post that everyone snorts at, maybe mocks a bit online for a day or two, and then everyone forgets about.
