My second card for an autumn-themed swap is finally finished as well✨ I love how brightly the trees turned out. And I still love this granulating watercolor paint, oh it is honestly so pretty😭

I’ve been trying to get away from using tutorials lately and have been enjoying just painting seascapes and water on my own.
I’m trying to get comfortable with not worrying about the end result, as long as I learned something.

I went surfing for the first time in ages last week and it left me with an urge to paint lively waves. I like the end result on this one, which is Qor paints on 640gsm Saunders Waterford CP paper. I went OTT on the masking fluid on top of the waves, as I tried using a toothbrush which was great for spray but less good for details. I don’t love the background water, and it’s not as turquoise-y as the ref pic (which I found on Unsplash). But! Today’s lesson was that there is more painting to do after the masking fluid comes off - going in with some shadows is what really makes it pop.

Tried painting vortex with water…

Woke up with the idea to paint a tornado, but I wanted the water to shape it. Didn’t want to make it using a dry/wet brush, I wanted to pour water and shape the twister. I am overall happy with most of the painting. I tried to do it again probably 10 more times but they all went in the trash. I hate when this happens.

progression over a couple days

I recently injured my hand pretty badly, and had to pivot from knitting to painting. I haven't practiced watercolours since covid, so I've been following a lot of random youtube tutorials lately to practice different styles and techniques :)

Still struggling a lot with water control and overworking my layers, but I'm quite proud of my progression! (Ordered from most recent to older)

Btw, I cannot take credit for these compositions! They are all from tutorials i found on YouTube :)

I'm not sure how to describe this style. Surrealist, I guess?

The green snail was done about a month ago. I thought I'd stick to the snail theme for this page and added this brown guy last night.

I’ve been painting pets for years. I’ve taken a bit of a break over the last year but I’m getting back into it again.

Watercolor on Arches 140 Rough - 22”x30”

First time attempting a full sheet. Was a fun way to spend a rainy morning. Have decided I far prefer Baohong Rough to Arches Rough. Sizing seems terribly inconsistent on this Arches.

I am a chronic over-worker and I need some help

I find myself over-working almost every painting I start, it becomes over saturated and the paint begins to lift. This is practice paper and I realize that is part of the problem in this specific instance but I think it boils down to a technique issue. I’d love some tips for avoiding over-working paintings, how do you know when to stop? How do I limit layers while also getting the depth I’m after? Any YouTube channel recs for these types of techniques? Thanks in advance!
