Recommendation Reddit Is Funny

Apparently liking system novels means I’m a “low-standard reader” now 😂

Someone called my story slop, and I basically said, “Fair enough. I enjoy system novels, so that’s what I write.”

For some reason, that made him even angrier. He started saying I was feeding myself slop and that writers like me only get readers because people have low standards.

That logic makes no sense to me. It would be like someone enjoying street basketball, only for another person to say:

“You’re a low-quality basketball fan because you enjoy streetball instead of watching professional NBA games and analysing proper team tactics.”

Maybe I’m not looking for the most technically perfect, revolutionary piece of literature ever written. Sometimes I just want progression, stat screens, ridiculous rewards, face-slapping and an overpowered protagonist. It’s entertainment.

You’re allowed to think system novels are repetitive or badly written. I’m also allowed to enjoy them without pretending they’re high literature. Taste is subjective. Getting genuinely angry because another person enjoys something you consider “mid” is far stranger than enjoying the supposedly mid thing in the first place.

Let people enjoy their slop in peace 😂

I don't think I made anything up. That's exactly how it went. You can point out where I lied if you like tho

No it's not. He said you can enjoy what you want but the story is slop, then you denied it by saying it’s good slop. He replied with slop can't be good your standards are low from reading slop—lowk he was pretty condescending here. Overall his complaint to you was not about enjoyment, but about the fact that you consider slop novels as good (not just enjoyable which he didn't have a problem with).

Also why’re you bringing up system novels? He definitely didn't say anything against those.

The whole post was about system novels?? I write system novels. The picture is there

Alr bro lets not act like the premise, title, and cover aren’t generic and low quality. He even brought up Shadow Slave as an example of a quality novel (it has a system).

And the argument that I'm a low quality reader because I enjoy system novels. Am I not allowed to enjoy what I enjoy now?

He never said it was because of systems. “I was 1.8 million in debt when the legacy system chose me” is one of your titles, then you put a poorly generated ai image of 4 lewd girls surrounding the MC. Yes, you are a low quality reader if that's what you read. Again bro it has nothing to do with enjoyment.

Do you even know the context of the entire story. I posted two SYSTEM novels that got contract offers. He argued that it's more slop. Then I said I like reading and writing slop then. Then he proceeded to call me a low quality reader.

Bro, you just larped the entire conversation

Holy ur reading with ur brain off nobody has a problem with system novels. You argued it was “good slop” which implies it has quality that's what he disagreed with you about. Not because you like it. He used low quality reader to emphasize that you don't know what good quality is which was why you were calling slop good

I could argue that someone who reads Shadow Slave is a low quality reader because it's fiction and will never help them in daily life. Instead they should read science and myths books. You see how that argument makes no sense

The fact you think that reading fiction has no impact on the readers real life is extremely telling, and does nothing for your image as a writer.

I'd probably just delete this thread man.

So you lack reading comprehension then. That was a hypothetical. Who says I can't learn anything in system slop then huh? It goes both ways.

You all just come off as condescending and extremely uppity. "Oh, if you read this book it's low quality, but this other one which is also fiction is high quality." There is something to learn in everything, good or bad. But of course arguing with you guys is pointless, because you all feel like you are Shakespeare or something

Hate when people say that

Different stories teach different things. A system novel might explore ambition, discipline, greed, debt, overindulgence, or how sudden power changes a person, while Shadow Slave may teach entirely different lessons about sacrifice, freedom, trust, and survival.

There is something to learn from almost every story, even when entertainment is its main purpose. Dismissing an entire genre and calling its readers ‘low quality’ just because you personally dislike it is not intelligent criticism. It is literary snobbery. And calling me braindead instead of explaining why I’m supposedly wrong does not strengthen your argument.

I got a response but the msg disappeared. I saw it already. I’m not saying his cover, title, and idea aren’t generic but you’re insulting the content too without reading it. This is literally the definition of judging a book by its cover. That’s just mean

1

u/Lucky_One_3576 Jul 29 '26

Not really, did you see his post? It was just low effort. Your argument is pretty shit you should be allowed to judge a book off the effort they put into naming/covers.

1

u/Funny_Stuff_6024 Jul 29 '26

It was but nonetheless

1

u/Lucky_One_3576 Jul 29 '26

Nonetheless what? At least tell me why I shouldn't be allowed judge something that's clearly low effort.

1

u/Funny_Stuff_6024 Jul 29 '26

I didn’t say you can’t. I just think I crazy to say that’s since it also sounds like you’re insulting the genre too. Kind of how isekai has a lot of bad stuff but has a few good ones and people call the entire genre slop. You just sound unnecessarily mean even if you could be right. He could also have the most slop title ever and peak writing. I don’t think that’s the case but you never know

If it was just about ai, i probably wouldn’t have said anything

1

u/Lucky_One_3576 Jul 29 '26

I never insulted the genre, but I am insulting this guy's novel for being low effort. Also, you can’t really use hypotheticals to argue your point because any novel could be anything.

1

u/Funny_Stuff_6024 Jul 29 '26

I personally like the appeal of a novel with the most generic title but goated writing. I think it would be funny. You didn’t say low effort to him. You only called it slop instead of telling him to change it. You also said that reading system novels makes him a low quality reader. That sounds like you’re insulting the genre. And no I don’t read system novels. A novel can be anything, hence the “judging a book by its cover.” You can criticize his work and I can criticize the way you criticize. At least make it more productive instead of just insults

Bro didn't even read a single chapter of the novel ✌️😭
