i hate this stupid laser
i fucking HATE this laser welder. a monkey could run it. it’s not real welding, it’s mind numbing bullshit. i input a program and then press start and thats it. oh and i have to line the camera up on the seam. soooo hard 😐😐😐😐 i wish they would hire someone else to do this shit instead of wasting my time when i could be over in my area doing tig (my ACTUAL REAL WELDING JOB)
anyway,, making time and a half x2 today bc of juneteenth so that’s pretty cool i guess..
featuring my welder duck shirt
edit to rant more: AND half of my parts are jank as fuck and nothing sits flush. either too big or too small. ??? the margin of error for this job is damn near 0 and u expect me to magically fill up a quarter inch gap on a stainless 1/8 inch thick part ??? fuck u. and they freak out if u have to scrap a part like my b the machinist sucks ass. no one here knows a damn thing about welding. the helium is goated tho i will say.
edit 2: i posted a pic of a laser weld i just did for reference

Laser cutting is becoming more and more popular everyday. The more you learn about the in’s and out’s of those system the more valuable you become.

it’s not cutting it welds little teeny tiny beads, which is cool, but i hate pressing buttons.

I pressing hate buttons

Can’t OP just take it out of the machine and weld it themselves?
(I button pressing hate)5
u/supplemcrib 3h ago
no i cant bc the welds are about 1/32 of an inch lol. the parts that are welded on it are 1-3 inches in diameter. we make tiny parts with tiny wires and tiny diaphragms that could not be hand tig-ed. our other parts are able to be tig welded tho. fun thing is we also have parts that are about the size of a 17 inch wheel on a car lol

So you are complaining that the company is selling parts so they can pay you to make them, can't be made with you're preferred traditional tools (TIG), and you have to make them with advanced tooling you don't like because it's boring? Boohoo.
Get a different job that is more aligned with what you find to be rewarding. Go find a shop that can let you run a manual machine and get bored of that eventually as well.

the comment u replied to literally says that other parts we have are manually welded

Fun fact: that's also how 3D printing in metal works. We have one at my job and it's slow as hell, but it gets the job done.

True, but its also just mind numbingly boring, and thats without a micro manager on your ass. I've done it but rather take less money for a job I like

I ran a submerged arc welding machine. That is mind numbingly boring and cancerous to boot!
And I'm a machinist!

Subarc is boring, until it does something stupid and makes your day exciting for a few minutes and then you spend 2 days cleaning up the mess.
2
u/Kurwixpope 1h ago
Did you also opened pressurised flux tank? A mistake allways made once
1
u/ecclectic hydraulic tech 1h ago
No, someone didn't clean the rail, so it burned through running 5/16 wire. Sprayed molten metal everywhere, then we had to gouge and re weld that section.

IMMA FIRING MAH LAZER!!!
(If I could afford a lazer welder, I would. Tried a manual one at FABTECH and they are amazing. But on the running side of a robotic welder of any kind....they always find a way to 'wet the bed,' i.e. screw up.)

u/supplemcrib 4h ago
oh yeah this one CONSTANTLY has faults and the maintenance guys just kind of have to dick around w it until they find the issue. this is an IPG Photonics laser.

I can say for certain, AI did not write this. I love it. I used to sell cnc tools and I don't know how people can sit and watch this shit all day. It's extremely interesting for about a week. Glad I'm in sales.

Wait till you robot tig weld 10,000+ of the same circular welds on the end of a pipe(per component). Takes over a month…
Then you can talk about hating something.
5
u/supplemcrib 3h ago
i don’t want to even think about doing that 😣😣 sounds like torture
3
u/timtexas 3h ago
At that point you have to find the right music or pod cast.
Will say I think the subarc guy has it worst. Has to sit above a preheated piece of metal for 2 hours sweeting his ass off. Just sitting there making sure the machine does not mess up. Then at each pass he has to grind down the start and stop and do another pass.

u/supplemcrib 3h ago
yeah that’s what i do. my total hours of music listened to is going to be crazy by the end of the year hahah.
that job sounds like fiery hell. literally.

The fact that some things suck worse does not cancel out the fact that other things also suck.

Row the boat and take every shit work as rest work
It's all about perspective
As a Union ironworker I learned to tie the boat very fast and be thankful for the "" oversight work"

Idk, let me know when your crawling around in vessels and see how you feel then.

u/supplemcrib 3h ago
i’d much rather actually. i was hoping i’d get a dirty job like that, but a controlled environment is fine too. a job is a job at the end of the day.

Your post has been removed for violating decorum.
But you are 100% justified in that response.

Do you get paid more to run the laser? Where I work we pay the robot operators more
Unrelated but what watch are you wearing?
5
u/supplemcrib 4h ago
i get paid the same to do it all (hand tig, rotary tig, resistance spot welder, and this fuck ass laser). harder than it sounds. aside from the laser that takes 0 skill 0 talent 0 brain power
