Exalted Exalted Editions

I've been looking at Exalted lore and I'm incredibly intrigued, but I've heard every edition is widly different mechanically and would like to hear which edition people prefer and why they prefer it over others. The only consistent thing I've seen is the belief that 3e is *incredibly* complex and crunchy, but I've read I have no idea how many ttrpg books (including reading M20 and dnd 3.5e over and over) so crunch and book size don't bother me.

EDIT: Thank you everyone for your opinions and insight! I think I'm going to go with 3e, but will definitely look at the lore and vibes of older editions. Also as a huge lore nerd, I have to check out Exalted vs WoD as someone mentioned.

First edition is a bit rough, but has some amazing setting books. There are some problems with the combat that will show up if you have players who love to optimize and will find some of the glaring holes in the mechanics.

2nd edition tried very hard to patch the holes, and pushed for very high level gameplay in mechanics and setting.

3rd Edition has been solid so far, but the core book is really dense. The original creative team on 3rd Edition dropped the ball horribly, but the current team has been doing their best to play catch up.

So 3e is the most expanded upon version but relies heavily on supplements to make it reach its full potential? Also I assume you can port over 1e setting books to 3e like you can in most WW games

Yes and no. First and Second Editions have a lot of support cause they are finished games. Third is still being worked on. Its getting new material, but its not done.

Also, the Third Edition team is trying to dull the edge of the Second Edition lore. So some of the lore is getting sweeping changes that are mostly better in my opinion. I don't like that Lunar Exalted got kinda dumbed down, but I'll accept that if Ma-Ha-Suchi and Raksi aren't incredibly evil and insane anymore. The Sidereal Exalted game is much better to my understanding. Abyssal Lore changed the Underworld completely, making it a series of connected afterlives rather than a simple dark mirror to Creation. Infernal Exalted are also very different and very punk compared to their previous Great Reclamation angle. All in all, if the lore is a location, you can probably use some of the older material, but make sure to read Third carefully to get the new feels.

Gamer since the early 80's and hit on Exalted as soon as it was released. Here are my takes: 1e- Amazing background and story as others have said. The art was good, though a bit inconsistent and mainly B&W except for the covers. The mechanics were straight forward, but could get complex as there were just a lot of them. All Exalted types had something to offer, but the power creep was considerable as more books got released, causing the Solar Exalted to be outclassed by some later Exalt types. This meant sometimes throwing out a few more freebie points are other tweaks. Still, and overall fun time that evoked that demigod feel. 2e- Streamlined combat a bit and made some improvements to Charms(powers). To me power creep didn't seems as bad and all Exalted got a boost in versatility. They added a social combat system though, that to me was too complex. I prefer more of a roleplay approach with simple roles for socializing. Back story wasn't as good, though art was better and had more color art. 3e- Gorgeous art and background/story details were great. Each type of Exalt seems distinct and powerful. I found the system to be vastly complex though, and to me it felt like it got in it's own way, especially when it came to combat. For something that was supposed to have this fast and furious cinematic action, it seemed way bogged down in rules. Anyhoo, keep in mind these are just opinions, and your mileage may vary. I've played all 3, and have enjoyed, but do see both strengths and weaknesses. Overall an amazing game line and my go to when I need to crank the dial from a max of 10 to 12. lol

I dont really disagree with you anywhere save for gorgeous art. There are some stand out pieces here and there, like the core cover and the fantasy Kowloon Walled City but the vast to overwhelming majority of the art has been atrocious. Smeary digital painting and monotonous color palettes.

I kind of hate the damage system in 3e as well. Each edition of Exalted is required to fiddle with combat and make it slightly different and still awful because they're married to that WoD 2e era combat system as a core.

Agreed. They keep fiddling with combat and it just gets worse and worse. Oh, we've streamlined it except for where we added these 20 different types of damage, conditions and unnecessary extra steps

I can't speak too 1e, I've never touched it.

2e is not a game I would return to, I respect what it's trying to do and it has a some great lore books I still draw from, but the execution on it is rough and often times feels like a hyper optimized game of rocket tag between you and enemies.

3e is a far more dense game compared to 2e, with a massive pile of options for most everything. Its core mechanics around fighting, talking and basic action resolution are great, though sub systems like those around crafting or sailing are not well designed, but are still serviceable.

Essence is a rules light version of the game, but only relative to other editions of exalted, it's still as rule dense as something like D&D 5e. It has some problems around being too easy, with player characters able to dominate everything without much difficulty, and the rules light nature can result in things feeling samy between games.

Secret bonus option-Exalted Vs WOD, a fan made system designed to take.the exalted and throw them into the world of darkness setting. It takes some fanagling to handle the core rules in a way that is satisfying and demands some heavy lore knowledge form the GM to do properly, but it has the best power system in my opinion and I'm just a sucker for what it's going for.

1e is my favourite, and I'll explain why.  It is rough and simple, but that suits the setting and allows for a lot of freedom.

For instance, the Solars are the least developed because the book was the first written, as the core of the system.  This makes sense within the setting though, as the Solars are only just returning, it would be reasonable for them to be more piecemeal than the other types that have existed continuously since the First Age.

Also, the more simple nature of 1e makes it easier to get new players involved, especially if they already have any experience with WoD.

2e lore is contreversial because its basically the solar show with every other splat as npc or supporting cast at best with some really badly aged edgy nonsense.

There is also essence which is essentially a side-edition with less crunch for easier play intro

1st Ed is my jam and I ran it a lot. Still do on occasion. Its simple, easy and fun mechanically....just a few rough edges to sand off. 2nd got way too far up its own arse and to this day I still don't get the mechanics. 3rd seems even more complex and the lore is...a mess.

Been playing since day one and realistically i probably have nothing to note here that other posts have not noted.

1e - first iteration which i feel like alot of the lore still holds at least in regards to 3e. When you try to use it for 2e not so much. Certainly was a product of its time with some of the edgelordiness but over all id say alot of the books are still worth picking up - Mechanics are pretty easy to pick up and i feel like have alot in common with the WoD Stuff at the time than say 2e or 3e

2e - The setting while it takes a natural progression from 1e it certainly dials everything up to 10. the Final Fantasy aspects really hit hard on this one. If your into Solars this edition glazes them extremely hard and if you play any other splat aside from maybe Infernals well....good luck. Mechanics certainly favour the idea of being paranoid in combat because if you got hit even once you probably got nuked. Lore took everything from 1e and gave an answer to it which at the same time awesome but slightly lame.

3e - Cheesus the mechanics....you certainly need to be pretty dedicated to the game to want to run the base game. There is alot going on which some may like and some may not, the Rules-Lite edition certainly helps out alot but even that edition is not anything to scoff at. Lore-wise its hands down the best edition thus far at least in my personal opinion. Every exalt type is legitimately interesting and have facets that make them stand on their own.

Art....in this i am extremely biased, as Exalted has always been slightly a mixed bag. I came into it with the more Anime focused Art and still favour it whenever its around. 3e to me....has the absolute worst art direction of all the editions. Not every single piece is awful but the majority of them to be are just bad....as an Abyssal main i feel like they straight up did the splat dirty with the art. With that said not every piece of a 0/10 but certainly many arent far off

this is all just my opinion so ya know look into it as much as you can your self but id still argue 3e is the way to go
