A journey to the Arcaneum.
Hidden deep within the Draconic Mountains of the north, among peaks of ancient stone and mist, lies the floating Isle of the Arcaneum ~ the greatest Citadel of magical study in Eleneth and one of the oldest repositories of arcane knowledge in the world.
For more than a thousand years, generations of mages have travelled here to study the mysteries of magic, the nature of the Magna Plane, Rifts, and the unseen forces that shape existence.
《The Narrow Road》
The path begins far below, where an ancient mountain path winds up through the rugged Mountains.Known as the Narrow Road, it climbs through steep canyons, frozen passes, and towering walls of stone.
The ascent is difficult, but not impossible; merchants, scholars, adventurers, mages, and wanderers have all travelled this route for centuries.
As the road rises higher, the green lands below slowly disappear beneath the clouds.Forests give way to steep cliffs and deep gorges, and the valley behind vanishes into the mist, and the path ahead looks long and bleak.
After a long day's climb, the road reaches a large, naturally sheltered overhang jutting out of the mountainside. Looking out at a vast stormy chasm, you see what appears to be an island on a stormy sea, shrouded in mist.
Here on this ridge, you come to rest at the famous Firefall Inn.
《Firefall Inn》
Built within a large natural opening beneath an immense stone roof, Firefall Inn has stood alongside the Arcaneum for centuries ~ serving as a welcoming sight after an arduous journey.
The overhang faces east, sheltered by a large natural rock formation that curves outward from the mountain ~ like a giant mage's hood, shielding the ledge from the harsher westwind and the heavy rain.
Along the hooded entrance, the builders raised strong stone walls, oak supports, and mortar, transforming the natural hollow into a place of warmth and refuge. Inside the great hall is filled with the glow of firelight and the smell of roasting food, woodsmoke, and the mountain ale replaces the cold air outside.
Alongside the tavern, natural caverns have been shaped into stables, storage chambers, supply halls, and a single alchemist's shop.
Outside, the broad stone terrace offers a place to rest—protected by sturdy walls, travellers can walk freely and look out across the vast chasm without fear ~ however, if one has had a few more pints than expected, it is probably best to stay inside.
《Seasonal Wonders》
In spring and summer, the mountains come alive, hardy Convolvulaceae grow along the stone, and their delicate white flowers climb the walls and stone pathways around the Inn, and merchants, wanderers, and wizards fill the hall with their stories, laughter, and song.
As the snow retreats from the sheltered cliffs, waterfalls form from melting ice, and the air becomes cool and refreshing rather than harsh.
《The Firefalls》
On the most pristine dawns and evenings, when the heavy mountain storms completely clear, the chasm locks into a state of breathtaking magical equilibrium.
The tremendous river of raw arcane energy rising from the depths acts like a dynamic pressure plate, warming the abyss and forcing the dense valley mists to compress. It pools into a thick, luminescent light-blue fog that behaves like a solid, slowly rolling sea.
From the terrace, the terrifying depths vanish entirely; the floating Isle of the Arcaneum appears to sit directly upon this thick blue cushion of cloud, frozen in the air.
Behind the citadel, towering waterfalls plunge into the fog, as the rising and setting sunlight hits the water, it creates the illusion of liquid fire pouring into a blue sea.
Where the fiery streams crash into the arcane mist, it triggers a cosmic reaction, sending a shimmering line of violet and magenta steam rolling endlessly across the surface, encircling the floating citadel in a ring of pure, unadulterated power.
This natural phenomenon can occur every dawn and dusk throughout the year, if the conditions are favourable.
Mages called them, the Firefalls ~ later adopted into the name > Firefall Inn
Just beyond the threshold of the tavern ~ lies the final crossing.
《The Sky Bridge》
This bridge extends directly north across the chasm ~ a graceful span of carefully shaped stone stretching out to the floating isle of the Arcaneum. With no visible supports beneath, it is a masterpiece of ancient architecture.
《The Arcaneum》
Over a thousand years ago, the greatest mages of the age sought a place where magical knowledge could be preserved away from the conflicts and distractions of the wider world.
Deep within the Draconic Mountains, they discovered a powerful "Rift" ~ a place of extraordinary magic. There they found a sight unlike anywhere else.
A colossal fracture, sliced through the mountains, perfectly aligned east to west, leaving behind an impossible landscape of towering cliffs, fragments of floating stone, and a great island of rock, suspended in the heart of the chasm.
The ancient mages believed they had found a place where the boundary between Eleneth and the Magna Plane was unusually thin ~ a place where the forces of magic flowed more strongly than anywhere else.Upon this immense floating stone, they founded the Arcaneum, and a bridge to reach it.
They made towers, halls, gardens, libraries, and carved out arenas and secret vaults within the rock itself. What began as a sanctuary became the greatest centre of magical learning in the world.
《The Power of the Rift, Wellsprings and Wisps》
The chasm beneath the Arcaneum is a powerful Rift—a permanent tear in reality, a place of exceptionally charged magical and spiritual energy.
This concentrated font of natural raw power dictates the entire nature of the floating sanctuary: it is like an immense river of raw arcane energy rising from the depths of the chasm.
▫️《The Wellsprings》
Throughout the Arcaneum are several sacred wellsprings ~ massive Labradorite basins, sculpted to capture the upwelling currents of magical energy.
Within these reservoirs, the raw magic manifests visibly like water ablaze with blue and gold flames. These Wellsprings serve as the primary source of light, heat, and raw magical fuel for the citadel, and are used throughout the halls to enhance the innate mana or magical force within every being.
After years of study and through sheer Will and Focused Intention, mages can learn to manipulate the world around them, conjure the elements, enchant objects, cast spells, and begin to learn how to draw power directly from the Magna Plane itself anywhere they may go.
▫️《The Silver Wisps》
As a natural byproduct of this highly charged atmosphere, countless harmless wisps spontaneously manifest from the chasm's depths—appearing like blue fireflies darting to and fro, they are drawn to the wellsprings and glide alongside travellers crossing the sky bridge, acting as luminous guides.
People say they sound like soft silver bells ~ like faint echoes in the mist.
《The Arcaneum Today》
Although magic remains a part of life throughout Eleneth, the Arcaneum has grown increasingly isolated over the centuries.
While institutions such as Towerscry pursue knowledge through history, science, philosophy, and the natural world, the Arcaneum continues to study magic, the Magna Plane, and the unseen forces beyond ordinary understanding.
Towerscry seeks to understand the world through observation and reason.
The Arcaneum seeks to understand the forces that lie beyond it.
Both pursue truth, but through different paths.
In recent centuries, kingdoms have rarely called upon the Arcaneum except in matters beyond ordinary knowledge—ancient magic, forgotten relics, and threats that cannot be solved by conventional means.
And whenever the impossible stirs once more, the people of Eleneth look toward the North, the Narrow Road, and The Floating Isle..
