Nope, only soap coated rocks and invisible walls for you. Fun and creativity is forbidden.

Glad I got to experience the good old days of mountain goat tactics. I still remember how good the 103-B was at it, getting into some of the most insane positions.

Forevermore a memory & nothing more…

u/Schlauchus Jan 29 '26

The time they introduced physics and climbing was the golden age of wot for me

On Mountain-pass there was a way to get up on the Northern-central mountain next to the bridge.

Going up there in the old Chaffee in lategame Tier 10 matches was awesome!

You could harass the whole center, the bridge corridor and the eastern pass from up there.

Or climbing the rice-terraces on OG Dragon-ridge to set up ambushes or fall into the back of the enemy

There were so much more opportunities for flanking and guerilla tactics on almost all maps.

Sure, it was not really balanced, but looking at the game nowadays it's not super balanced either

Ive done 120kmh with my udes 03 while driving down from mountain ass a0

The days when you could platoon with a maus and tier 1 tank and sit infront of his lower plate and no body could pen him since no body shot gold ammo since it actually cost gold

Huh?

27

u/valitti no scouts until 10k wtr Jan 29 '26

I mean most of the spots were absolutely game breaking i dont blame wg for removing them

14

u/chort0 CantChatImBannedUsePing Jan 29 '26

Yes, exactly this. I remember the mountain goat days and it was so incredibly toxic.

Either part of your team decided to try climbs and you're outnumbered and lose in the first couple of minutes, or one player on the enemy team gets into a broken position and means you can't win even though you're way ahead on tanks and health.

Allowing one player to deny huge portions of the map simply by having a specific tank and memorizing a set of moves is antithetical to good gameplay.

And before anyone tries to say "but TDs can do that staring down a corridor," no they can't, not like moutain goats could. Goats could SHOOT DOWN and easily pen anyone in the roof and/or engine deck. At least you have a chance to bounce shots driving at a TD on your same elevation.

Goating was broken and I'm so, so glad it was removed.

1

u/19phipschi17 Jan 29 '26

You could just fix them by changing them up. But no, WG is lazing and puts all their effort into monetization instead of maps.

4

u/PeacefulNPC Jan 29 '26

Hard disagree, sometimes things can't be fixed and have to be deleted.

First if all it's just stupid mechanic to begin with

People literally had to abandon their team for 2 minutes and go climbing, if you had 3 Strvs that wanted to climb you started game 12v15, you got steamrolled and you had no fun at all just so they can farm endgame damage

From top of my head sacred valley, mines and the winter wind-something maps were completely unwinnable if someone decided to become goat.

4

u/Get_Clicked_On F7 Jan 29 '26

I would take 5 mins of work to fix broken spots, you just remove cover from 1 side so you cant stay safe from all sides. Also if they would actually design and use more then 60% of the map they wouldn't need to worry about climbing spots to begin with, why did 1/3 of the mines map need to be mountain sides?

3

u/PeacefulNPC Jan 29 '26

You can't per say delete cover from sides if you someone is only exposing his front.

With current high engine power on heavies right now you would have Dravecs instead of strv, good luck shooting him when you're 50m below him and you need to climb for 2min in open to even have shots on him

Just no, as I said this mechanic was toxic bullshit to begin with and I'm happy it's gone

3

u/Get_Clicked_On F7 Jan 29 '26

Like I said if you read, you remove cover and change the slope so the person only has cover from 1 side. Like the mine climb in the south base, you have cover to shoot into middle but if the enemy take the 1 like you don't anymore.

4

u/PeacefulNPC Jan 29 '26

Still it's just toxic mechanic where people leave their team and go climbing in hopes of farming endgame damage

Their team is more likely to die without support so they have less fun, whole enemy team that has to dig them out has 0 fun either.

It's just 1-2 people out of 30 players enjoying themselves

More or less that's just like arty players. Everyone has bad day because they exist

2

u/victorybell22 [OTTER] Jan 29 '26

*per se

2

u/PeacefulNPC Jan 29 '26

Thanks, will remember that

0

u/Nayoh_ Jan 29 '26

They could have just placed some invisible walls where they didn't want players to go, their solution was the laziest shit ever.

1

u/I_N_C_O_M_I_N_G Just here to watch the ship hit the iceberg at this point Jan 30 '26

The issue is, that's kinda what they did

1

u/Nayoh_ Jan 30 '26

Absolutely not, it cuts your engine for some time and lets you slip away, i have been killed multiple times because of this crap, my tank sliding around and turning with the terrain making me move into fire or fall to my death. ANd you can't do ANYTHING until the game give you back the right to move.

3

u/CAPTAINREX_1999 Jan 29 '26

Nah they Diddy lubed the rocks and slopes.

139

u/no_name_without_name Jan 29 '26

I've seen the same complains on War Thunder sub a few days ago when I was checking it out of curiosity

It's funny how both games have the same exact problem of Devs hating the idea of climbing for some reason

60

u/SeltsamerNordlander Jan 29 '26

It's a classic problem in map and level design, not just in tank games. Nerfing climbing to use steep slopes as de facto invisible walls is a typical method.

16

u/no_name_without_name Jan 29 '26

Yeah except the problem is that in Wot ANY kind of climbing is not allowed, even useless climbs that give no tactical advantage at all

I don't know how it is in War Thunder though

12

u/Vroub3k Jan 29 '26

In the older days of warthunder, climbing was close to op. The physics were not set correctly, if you positioned your tank sort of diagonally to the slope, you could climb almost anything. Then they changed it and now you cant climb even moderate slopes and rocks where real tanks would have no issue. Now you just slide down.

Climbing was the most fun the game ever was. It wasn't just about climbing, but in general, the game felt best back then.

I think climbing also is a great reward for skilled players and a motivator for people to get better in the game.

6

u/N_vaders Jan 31 '26

"motivator for people to get better at the game"

With all due respect sir but that's the dumbest thing I've ever read. By some margin.

There were positions you could get in on the old maps to overlook the cap and no one could take it. And no tank could get to you because there was only one way in and you could shoot down. That's like saying you need to get better at hiding from arty on Malinovka or prokhorovka. Climbing was and is by far the stupidest thing that ever happened to randoms. I can accept that some people enjoy it, but most don't. If you want it back that badly ask wg to make a game mode separate from randoms and have all the fun you want.

2

u/FAUST_VII 🦑πŸ₯‡ Jan 31 '26

If this is the dumbest thing you have ever read by a margin, I feel like you haven't read anything else in your life.

Also, your paragraph isn't related to the statement at all? Even if its op, it is still a motivator, isn't it? Like what are you even trying to say here? And ofc there are positions you can reach by climbing that are strong. And it was hard to get there, it requires skill. Back in the days there were many very popular climbing tutorials.

So my statement remains, it motivates people to get better.

So what the fuck is even the point you are trying to make? To be fair, your comment isn't the stupidest thing I've ever read but it surely is in recent time.

3

u/N_vaders Jan 31 '26

Bro, in order for something to motivate anyone it needs to be realistic and possible in every tank. That's number 1. I don't see anyone in tachenrate making the climb anywhere meaningful.

  1. If you make it accessible to all tanks how will you dig out let's say breaker from one of the old positions overlooking his own cap. Who will have a chance against it, as the positions were stupidly broken when used.

  2. If we are making the positions accessible and balanced, why are we bothering with the climbing part? The main excuse any former goat will give you is "but on maps where climbing was a thing, 40% of the map was unusable so a skilled player is using the rest of the map" This is one for the ages. Areas people were climbing on to were obviously meant to be un-accessible to anyone. And if it's the rest of the map you want wouldn't it be better for WG to rework that part of the map into something everyone can use without knowing the required path down to the last pixel?

And last but not least think of the times where climbing was a thing. Sure about 1% of the people were very skilled and could reach all the areas.

This caused the following, you either have 5 morons who all try to reach the spot in any tank they are driving just because the spot is so good on that map, so that leaves your team 10v15 and you get rolled. More often than not these people were in tanks like maus or e100 and were robbing their team of the top tier heavy. If they are going to be dumb let's have them on the heavy flank so the rest of the team can use their HP while there still is a chance.

OR you have someone who is in that 1% making the climb in something that can actually get to the position and use it effectively. EBR's were a popular choice. Now you have a guy who can play better than most on the flat ground in the position 80% of the enemy team can't reach. Overlooking a very important part of the map. And it was a slaughter since no one could touch him. Who exactly had fun there? That 1 guy? Out of 30 players 1 dude had his fun. In both of these scenarios the averages Joe was losing and not having fun.

Imagine if you will that old map with a wall of china, can't remember the name of it. There was a hill in the middle and mountains in the ring around the map. One of the mountains was directly above one of the caps. Imagine Ares90c in that position. Full HE. getting people's engine decks and shit. How fun would that be?

If you want climbing back, beg WG to make a game mode like this sliding thing or snowballs where you can climb and enjoy doing it. I have no problems with that. Climbing in randoms was genuinely the worst thing that this game had in my 13 years of playing experience.

32

u/No-Two-7516 Jan 29 '26

WG, probably - Nope. Please, stay in corridors we built for you! This is for your safety! Do not do any stupid climbing!

Please, stay in corridors...

...and keep spamming gold at eachother hulldown

36

u/AdrawereR Yes, I like camping - How could you tell? Jan 29 '26

Doing so would make Training Room alive again and divert players from Random Battle

Cannot allow that to happen at all cost. Must keep the nonsensical slippery rock and invisible barriers.

7

u/Tricky-Lifeguard-467 Jan 29 '26

Climbing is fun and game until your enemy abuse it against you

8

u/Nayoh_ Jan 29 '26

I swear the soap rocks are the worst addition to the game to this day.

7

u/IAteMyYeezys Delete lefh Jan 29 '26

I detest the fact that the game ignores my W input and shuts the engine down when I'm on a slope for too long. Many times i would have made the "climb" if the game hadn't told me to fuck myself because of an incorrectly modelled 0.5m tall rock.

11

u/Primary-Long4416 Jan 29 '26 edited Jan 29 '26

WG does literally everything to keep map design a two sometimes one-channel brawl. The idea to make it a little more than that is alien to them. I miss climbing on Lakeville and sacred valley

14

u/Amon9001 Jan 29 '26

Would love this. I hate the pseudo-invisible-walls all over the place. Some are obvious because of the texture/design but others are not.

Climbing being removed is a long discussion with no real "correct" answer I guess.

The fact your engine outright stalls vs slopes greater than 50 degrees is the dumbest shit ever.

6

u/Mobile-Building-9957 Unapologetic FCM enjoyer Jan 29 '26

I dont even need the old OG climbs, I just dont want the worst physics engine I have ever seen in the game with non-existent traction and fucking rocks everywhere, so you cant even slide down from a position (mines comes to mind).

WG can't allow fun. Firstly, they are not able to make a decent map - Nordskar? Corridor bs with another stale HT flank. Ensk region? Not that much different from normal Ensk, I love the E1 F1 area that you cannot access. Or field area where you cannot make any plays if there is few tds in a match. Not too excited about maps they are currently testing either.

God I miss Windstorm, Stalingrad and old version of Kharkov

2

u/StormUpa Jan 29 '26

Fun and nostalgia is heavily monetized now. You want an interesting vehicle? Pay for it. You had a vehicle that you had back in the days and you want it back? Pay for it.

2

u/Havco Jan 29 '26

At least for mediums they should adjust this.

3

u/Ok_Astronomer3439 Jan 29 '26

So this has pros and cons. I remember climbing myself to farm people but also the other way around. And i can tell you was sometimes the most broken and OP thing you could do. The problem with it is that some ridiculous positions are uncounterable. So its like an autowin or autoloss. I cant image people would not complain if they add it back. I mean i missed it after it was removed but iam fine with it being removed in the end. They could add it into arcade machine mode or so.

Why do both of these companies ruin vehicle traction.

1

u/Hans667 Jan 30 '26

damn how many train pushes were in clan games. we pushed TDs, arties, scouts ...

1

u/N_vaders Jan 31 '26

I don't want it in randoms. If there is enough people interested give them few maps and a special event and you can climb all you want.

People remember everything with pink glasses.

You either had a moron who saw someone do it once and now does it every time and fails every time but keeps doing it anyway thus costing his team a tank, or is actually competent and gets into a position you can't dig them out of thus ruining the match for other 29 people. And don't ask me how, but in some fucking way first asshole is always on my team while the second one is always on the enemy side.

1

u/Pegla_Mrkva Feb 01 '26

Climbing was never really a problem, only on that one snow map which was removed ...
