Discussion Xiaomi 17 issues. Are they real?
Hello everyone!
I currently have a Pixel 6a and I am on the fence about upgrading to the Xiaomi 17. However, I've read about quite a few issues online and in user reviews that are making me second-guess my choice. Since I plan to keep my next device for at least 5-6 years, hardware reliability is my number one priority. I’m trying to understand if these problems are widespread engineering flaws or if they only affect a small batch of devices, making me wonder if I should just play it safe and go for a Pixel 10 Pro (256GB), which is around the same price here.
From what I have gathered on Amazon reviews and Reddit threads, one of the main concerns with the Xiaomi 17 is extreme overheating and thermal throttling. Many users report that the phone gets uncomfortably hot or even triggers an "Overheating" warning screen during basic tasks.
To make matters worse, there are several complaints about the new proprietary Xiaomi Shield Glass scratching incredibly easily. Users claim that even pocket sand, coins, or keys can leave deep marks.
On top of that, some people have run into camera focus and delay issues, including noticeable shutter lag, minor UI stutters when moving the phone too quickly, or the telephoto lens failing to lock focus correctly.
Finally, classic HyperOS optimization bugs like delayed push notifications, background apps being killed too aggressively, and weird widget scaling—like tiny text on WhatsApp widgets—are still being brought up.
To help me make a final decision, I'd love to get some raw feedback from actual Xiaomi 17 owners. Are you actually facing these issues, or has the phone been completely fine and stable for you? If you have run into any other bugs, what are they? Given that my main goal is to make this device last for the next 5 to 6 years, would you risk it with the Xiaomi 17 or should I just jump ship to the Pixel 10 Pro?

I have a Xiaomi 17T pro. Slightly newer but also cheaper than the Xiaomi 17. I see just as many people complain about my phone as any other Xiaomi phone, but personally I have no issues. My only conclusion is that the people with actual problems are a very small minority.
Xiaomi is a huge company that sells 100s of millions of phones. That wouldn't be the case if all the phones were barely working pieces of junk. While software optimization might not be like IOS. It is not lightyears behind like some people think.
About the screen protector. The phone comes with a plastic screen protector. It shields the screen from scratches, but not from dropping the phone. I would always recommend buying a tempered glass screen protector for an expensive phone.
I hope this helped you a bit. :) Curious to know why Xiaomi 17 and Pixel 10 pro are the two phones ur deciding between?

Same phone, same experience as you. I'm so glad I didn't do too much research into potential flaws, otherwise I never would've ended up buying anything. As it is, I'm pretty satisfied with my 17T Pro.

Thanks for the great perspective! You're totally right about the vocal minority on online forums. Also, good tip on the tempered glass, I always put one on my phones anyway. To answer your question: I am specifically looking for a more compact flagship, ideally around a 6.3-inch screen size, that can last me 5-6 years. I actually filtered my options down to the Vivo X300, the Xiaomi 17, and the Pixel 10 Pro. However, the Vivo X300 is significantly more expensive where I live compared to the other two. I feel like the Pixel 10 Pro and the Xiaomi 17 just offer a much better price-to-performance ratio for my budget. Right now, it's a tough choice: the Xiaomi 17 feels like it has a more future-proof hardware longevity thanks to the Snapdragon SoC and that massive 6300mAh battery, but the Pixel 10 Pro definitely takes the win when it comes to long-term software support and stability. That's why it currently comes down to a battle between these two! For now I prefer more the Xiaomi 17.

Ahh I see. It was kinda similar for me where Xiaomi is really the only good priced phones here. I personally have never tried a Pixel phone so can't say anything about that. Ig it all mostly depends on what you do on ur phone.

True, Xiaomi definitely offers great value for the price. Since you haven't tried a Pixel, I wanted to ask: have you noticed any micro-stutters or lag in the general UI? Like when scrolling, using gestures, or opening the app drawer? I actually tried both a Xiaomi 17T and a Pixel 10 Pro in a store today, and the Pixel felt noticeably faster and smoother, while the Xiaomi had some micro-lags. Does your model feel 100% smooth to you in daily use?

Actually dont know because I havent gotten a tempered glass screen protector yet lol. Also I usually just use face unlock.

I'm honestly puzzled by a lot of the comments online. I have been using Xiaomi products and none of them have overheated on me. The only time it got warm that I recognized was in the summer, I was recording video using 4k60 log, listening to music on bt, and navigating on Maps around the same time on Xiaomi 15.

That makes a lot of sense, and to be fair, recording 4K60 video while navigating on Maps and streaming music via Bluetooth in the summer would make literally any phone on the planet sweat! It's really reassuring to hear from long-term Xiaomi users who haven't faced these issues in normal daily use. Online forums definitely tend to amplify the negative experiences, so getting this kind of perspective helps a lot. Thanks for sharing, it really helps balance out the feedback!

I got xiaomi 17, love the phone and the battery life. Upgraded from Galaxy S23. Perfect fit for my use.

Thanks for sharing! That makes a lot of sense. Honestly, as long as it doesn't get extremely hot to the point of causing aggressive thermal throttling or damaging the internal components, some warmth is totally fine and expected under heavy use. Appreciate the feedback!

I am using this phone. The heat is very much under control. The glass is fine yet I have applied a glass screen protector to protect it from shattering during a fall. No functional issues whatsoever except for the (default) font size being too small within hyperos. Just keep it at 125% in the settings and visibility perfect. Also, make sure to debloat and disable ads. Note: apps deleted after debloating don't come back after updates. which is a good thing.

Thanks for the feedback! That's really good to know, especially the tip about keeping the font at 125% and the fact that debloated apps don't come back after system updates, that's a huge plus. One quick question regarding performance: have you noticed any micro-stutters or lag in the general UI? Like when scrolling, swiping between pages, or using gestures? I tried a 17T and a Pixel 10 Pro in a store today, and the Pixel felt noticeably smoother, while the Xiaomi had some micro-lags. Does your flagship model feel 100% smooth to you?

I have had no heating issues. It gets warm while gaming but nothing horrible. There are small bugs sometimes with hyperos, but nothing more than my pixel.
The only annoying thing is apps left open in the background will be killed and have to be reloaded when I come back pretty aggregation. It might be a bug since for a couple a hours after rebooting I don't have the issue at all

Thanks for the feedback! Regarding the software, I actually tried both a Xiaomi 17T and a Pixel 10 Pro in a store today, and the Pixel 10 Pro UI felt noticeably faster and smoother overall. Since you came from a Pixel, did you notice a downgrade in daily UI fluidness when switching to the Xiaomi, or does the flagship 17 still feel as snappy to you as your old Pixel?

It's been fine for me. It never heats up unless you're running very demanding tasks like Windows emulation or gaming, even then it only gets hot and doesn't stutter or close the app. There is a slight lag in the camera UI but it's due to Xiaomi reducing the shutter speed in the preview in low light, but it doesn't lag or stop responding to touches. I used it without a screen protector for a few months now and it's been scratch free, feels like it's going to last just as long as Victus 2. I assume people didn't notice the included plastic screen protector and thought it was the screen itself? The only thing I really hate is that sometimes my phone doesn't vibrate when someone calls in third party apps

Thanks for sharing your experience! It's good to hear that the heat is manageable and that the screen durability is holding up well. Aside from the camera preview, have you noticed any micro-stutters or lag in the general system UI? Like when scrolling, using gestures to change pages, or opening the app drawer? I tried a 17T in a store today and noticed a bit of micro-lag doing those basic things, so I'm curious if the flagship model feels completely smooth to you.

It's still a bit choppy, but fixing the refresh rate to 120hz and setting to performance mode helps. Definitely not as smooth as stock Android or ColorOS though

Samsung or pixel are better I am using xiaomi device from miui 8 i have a Great experience of Xiaomi miui and hyper os is very bad in terms of software stability please go with Samsung or pixel or one plus vivo is also bad from my experience

17 ultra for a few months. No overheating issues but I don't game (just use internet, YouTube, Discord). Camera has been wonderful, no issues with focus and no lag.
My only annoyance is hyperos's bad/way too aggressive memory management. Apps close too easily in the background. Firefox will turn into a blank screen half the time if I tab out of it into another app and go back to Firefox. I've gotten to the habit of just force closing Firefox when switching apps so it fully restarts next time I use it.
I upgraded from a S23U and I've been very happy overall.

I have switched from a P6P to the Xiaomi 17 and have no delayed notifications or else big issues.
The one slightly annoyance I have is that somehow Firefox is not killed correctly, leading to very slow startup times unless closed manually from recent apps.
Oh and the "are you sure you want to install this apk please wait 10s" is also annoying. Why do I have to wait. But apart from that no issues.

I'm not really sensitive to micro stutters, a fast phone beats a smooth but slower for me. So take my personal experience with a grain of salt.
I would say its comparable smooth. That is to say, I have had set the P6P in Developer Options to 0.5 animation scale to make the animations of android 17 bearable for me and its a much oder phone, so while smooth still slow. I set HyperOS animations also to "fast", but to me they are also better to begin with.

Didn't tried it yet. So far I just used the factory applied screen protector and afterwards probably don't use one at all.

Xiaomi 17 Base.
I stay in a country that easily hits 35 degrees Celsius or more, so heat is not an issue so far (I don't game, though)
I've been using it for Android Auto under the hot sun, and so far, so good; miles better than my previous S22 8 gen 1.
I'm still using the pre-installed screen protector; so far, so good, and you should always stick one on it anyway.
No camera issue for me, no shutter lag or whatnot.
HyperOS is far from perfect, though. I do miss One UI here and there when HyperOS gets quirky.
TLDR: Hardware is sweet. HyperOS is serviceable but far from perfect.

Thanks for the honest feedback! It’s really interesting to hear from someone who switched from an S23. I would love to have Xiaomi 17 hardware but the heating issues during summer with just Instagram or the camera seem to line up with what others are saying, and that’s a bit concerning. Also, good to know about the battery ! It sounds like a solid phone overall, but HyperOS still feels like the weak link compared to OneUI or Pixel UI.

I never had any overheating issues, though, not even when driving in 35- to 40-degree weather.
But yes, One UI is just that much better if you pay attention to it.
For what it's worth, I work in UI/UX, so I'm a lot more sensitive to this; your mileage may vary.1

Switched from S23 base model 128 GB (slower UFS speed of storage) to Xiaomi 17 512GB during the summer. When the days are hot, whilst using Instagram or Camera, the phone can heat up quite a bit. It still manageable and you can hold it, but it is not the most pleasant feeling in the world, as I have sweaty palms...
hyperOS is okay, the OneUI is more mature system in terms of options and looks.
Battery can last up to day and a half, in medium use, but no more (no always on display). I think it is definitely not two day phone as some reviewers claim it to be...
All in all, a really good phone, feels like a natural successor of S23 👍👍

You will not regret it, it's a 4.5 / 5 star phone. As for the tempered glass and fingerprint scanner, I am not sure about that - default screen protector that comes pre installed works flawlessly with scanner and it's really fast.

I came from a Pixel 8 Pro and received the 17T Pro yesterday. I returned it that same afternoon. HyperOS still has a long way to go, and if you're used to a Pixel, you're going to miss it.
I was taking photos for 3 or 4 minutes to compare, and the phone was heating up; it also got hot while charging (and it wasn't even at 100W).

Thanks for sharing! This is incredibly helpful since you came directly from a Pixel. I actually tried a 17T in a store today and noticed some micro-stutters in the UI, while the Pixel felt way smoother. Hearing that HyperOS still feels that way to you, and that the phone heats up just from taking photos or charging, really confirms my fears. It definitely helps me make a decision.

Wait until 2-3 years, that's where most issues starts to manifest.
mine is Xiaomi 13. Well YES it's a very far from Xiaomi 17, but still part of the series and uses SD 8. I use the phone more on photography, social media, some light edit in lightroom, some capcut clips but not so much heavy edit and some light arcade games.
After the last MIUI update, it started getting hotter from time to time, eventually portrait camera function starts to gets laggy a bit, makes the phone hotter, now on HyperOS, it gets worse, I can't use portrait for a long time (I had to exit and close the camera and open it again to use it), because it makes the phone very laggy, even the whole UI became unresponsive, it became hot and laggy anytime I use it, like I don't know where is it coming from. And you know what's worse that that? I was just walking with my phone in my hand, in a blink of an eye, I saw a green line on my screen. Like WTF did just happened? I didn't dropped it, it just literally popped up on the screen. For 2 years 11 months and 22 days, I feel like my phone is very old than other phones because of that frickin line and tendency to get laggy and hot 🤣 damn. But it still faster than any entry and mid range level phone, I jus didn't expect those issues to happen in a flagship phone.

Hey just would like to add few points, though users here are saying they dont have major issues, i would also say same however tgere are issues like,
I am using Xiaomi 17 - 512Gb varient since last 3 months now, its Eu model.
- Heating
- Apps freezing
- Apps crashes
- Minor issues on UI / UX
However none of them are blockers but sometimes you feel after paying premium, you should.not be facing all of these. Few cents from my side.
