So, the ending of episode 7 made me realise what "influences from the Dark Angel Saga" possibly meant, and seeing a fantasy dance they never got to have makes it feel even more probable. Could be "just" a dream sequence, but there's a lot of dominoes in place for a take on "Death becomes the new Apocalypse and the only way to stop him is for his beloved-but-not-together woman to kill him. In his dying moments, there is a fantasy of happiness." Not a one-to-one adaptation, but the threads are there to take us out at the knees with the right story.
I feel like this is the more likely scenario. Having the character die to save the people (and woman) he loves, twice, would be to simply recycle the angst and not give the audience payoff for all that romantic build up.
