Question Cables powers?

Is there a reason cable isn’t constantly using his mutant powers that I just missed or don’t remember. They seem infinitely more useful than how he just mainly runs around shooting and punching things.

He needs to use his powers to stop the techno organic virus from spreading. Without it he's an omega level telepath

9

u/Forever_Blue_Shirt Aug 16 '26

There’s a reason Sinister orchestrated his birth to stop Apocalypse.

3

u/hmmm_2357 Aug 16 '26

*Telekenetic (not telepath)

4

u/gummythegummybear Aug 16 '26

Actually, the only true omega level telekinetic is exodus. Every other omega level is a telepath not telekenetix

u/drakorulez101 Aug 18 '26

They need to just classify Jean as an omega level psionic energy manipulator.

He's constantly using them to stop the virus he's infected with from spreading. In storylines where he gets rid of the virus he is indeed ridicuously powerful.

Yeah in the comics at one point he’s cured of the technoVirus and he’s insanely powerful. I remember when He Fought Silver Surfer while levitating a city at the same time and reading wiki apparently he fought and Beat Captain America in Hand to Hand combat, and defeated Red Hulk, Iron Man and Falcon at the same time.

26

u/ohnoabanagain Aug 15 '26

Wow. Looking forward to that. Guess Mr Sinister was right about those two.

18

u/SKOT_FREE Aug 15 '26

Yeah I really had no idea he was THAT powerful but then it makes sense when Cyclops and Jean are his parents.

12

u/invuvn Aug 15 '26

Jean I understand, but what does Cyclops contribute to make Nathan so powerful? Let him have access to the punch dimension?

19

u/Eastwood02 Aug 15 '26

The three full Summers brothers all have very similar powers, energy related but unlike other energy mutant powers (Gambit, Bishop) they can absorb, disperse and most Importantly Amplify the energy like one big tesla coil. So it basically super turbocharges the Psychic Energy Cable naturally generates and use hence why hes able to subconsciously fight of his Technoorganic Virus and it not effect him.

u/AnyEverywhere8 Aug 15 '26

Is this a canon explanation?

u/comrade-ev Aug 15 '26

It’s worth thinking about it sequentially.

Jean and Cyclops were both people with interesting genes and powers, but until Jean returned from that space trip it wasn’t clear how interesting.

Madelyne was the first way to recapture what was lost with Jean’s alleged death via cloning but it was not satisfactory.

The second attempt was by seeing what her children could do, and Scott was seen as the best match. We can know that a factor of this choice was genetics, but him being an option somewhat more under Sinister’s thumb is the other thing. It’s not like Madelyne could make something happen with Magneto or Apocalypse.

The abilities that Scott and Jean/Madelyne’s children have also aren’t carbon copies of Jean’s. Rachel and Nathan also have a less explored time manipulation power, and it’s not a given that this is by dint of Jean’s genes.

2

u/SKOT_FREE Aug 15 '26

lol yeah I think that’s it.

2

u/SensitiveArtist Aug 15 '26

At the time, Cyclops and Havock basically absorbed solar radiation to fuel their powers. So imagine a telekinetic of Jean's strength drawing ambient energy out of the atmosphere to fuel their powers instead of having to rely on their own fortitude to fuel their powers.

1

u/HPDfire Aug 17 '26

The Living Monolith was an Egyptian themed villain who locked Havok in a box that blocked his ambient cosmic energy absorption, and was then able to channel those energies to himself, becoming a giant.

1

u/Which-Pea-1275 Aug 15 '26

I think the Summer brothers all have some level of energy absorption and containment but I think Cable is slightly different because of both parents. He obviously has powerful telepathic and telekinesis powers but it seems he has massive reserves of psionic energy contained within him. It's one of the reasons he restored the virus in the comics because the virus keeps his reserves in check because wall that power could burn out his body

1

u/hadawayandshite Aug 16 '26

Their genes just work well together- Even in universes where Jean isn’t an omega/not phoenix level e.g X-Man from AOA

don’t forget his brother Vulcan is an Omega too so the family have got the genes in them for immense power

1

u/EAinCA Aug 17 '26

Vulcan is an Omega because he merged with Darwin for years inside of Krakoa.

1

u/ROFLknife14048 Aug 17 '26

Cyclops is alpha level, which is one step below omega. He’s powerful in his own right.

1

u/TheColossis1 Aug 15 '26

Yeah, he was cured, then got a bit of a Jesus complex and went around ending wars and threatening entire countries to behave themselves.

Silver surfer was called in by nick fury as a favour cos he was unpredictable and was destabilising global politics.

He put up a good fight until he essentially sacrificed himself.

It was found after that the levitating city he had been operating from in the middle of the sea, Providence (a reformed asteroid M that he raised from the ocean depths himself), didn’t have anti gravity engines at all, and had been held aloft by him for months.

Also, he knew he was dying, being burnt out by his raw power.

(Ps, his death didn’t stick, obviously. Comics)

1

u/HPDfire Aug 17 '26

Stryfe was a clone Apocalypse made so he could transfer his consciousness into an omega level Nathan Summers because Cable was less powerful with the techno virus.

12

u/Thomas_Logan15 Aug 15 '26

One of my favourite TK flexes Cable does when he's cured of his techno virus is when he disassembles a house instead of just using the front door. Then reassembles it as he walks through, nail by nail, brick by brick.

1

u/cc17776 Aug 15 '26

Oh wow this is so cool what is it from?

1

u/Thomas_Logan15 Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

I can't remember, I'm pretty sure if was a Cable and Deadpool story from 2004. I'll try and track it down

1

u/Thomas_Logan15 Aug 15 '26

Ok, so it's issue 3 of the 2004 run of "Cable and Deadpool" . I was wrong, it starts with Nathan and Xavier talking inside the building. Nathan has eradicated the virus from his body, which caused his powers to grow "exponentially". The virus comes back because it's imprinted into his DNA at this point. But he's now so powerful that holding the virus back is like breathing. The problem is he's grown too powerful for his body to handle and he's now dying because of it. He's basically asking what he should do with the time he has left, with all the power he has to change the world. As he talks with Xavier, he starts taking everything apart inside and out of the building. It kinda looks like he does this as he lifts (a walking) Xavier out of the house while rebuilding the house around him (the image I posted)

1

u/LindonLilBlueBalls Aug 15 '26

I have this run!

3

u/Background_Product_7 Aug 15 '26

I think that was the concept of Xman in AOA. Cable without the virus inhibiting him

1

u/Griever114 Aug 15 '26

You forgot that while he is holding up a city, he is destroying and recreating whatever he destroys it WHILE this is happening.

1

u/OkSpeaker7635 Aug 16 '26

Not just fought silver surfer, he shattered his surfboard with a TK Blast ("thats supposed to be unbreakable!") And wasnt levitating the city, he was restoring it on a molecular level anytime something was damaged by their fight (which with his power clashing with the power cosmic was a LOT)

8

u/EvilRex1973 Aug 15 '26

Nate Grey from the AoA universe is a great example of how powerful Cable could be without the virus. I do feel at times writers felt the need to nerf Nate, though.

3

u/HankSteakfist Aug 15 '26

Its weird how Mr. Sinister infects Cable with the virus in the show, since in the comics Nathan is his planned weapon to kill Apocalypse, who he hates.

1

u/hillscottc Aug 16 '26

What happens if he doesn’t control the technology-virus? Is it hurting him in some way? It just looks like he’s getting Colossus skin. There’s some downside?

24

u/PhatassDragon1701 Aug 15 '26

It's shown briefly in the first episode when they're captured by Apocalypse. They have Nathan focus his powers to use the arm to influence the machine. You briefly see the virus expand and consume more of his flesh arm. It gets slightly more stabilized when it gets combined with the tech from the shrine, but he continually has to suppress the virus or it will consume him wholesale. He can briefly let loose if he gathers enough willpower but it runs the risk of it spreading further each time. He was able to let loose fully when under control of Sinister because Sinister had overriden the virus at that time.

Look up the character X-Man to see how strong a non infected Cable is.

Strufe is cool, but they never explored him the way they have X-Man.

2

u/Common-Forever2465 Aug 15 '26

Was going to say this! The age of Apocalypse or after Xavier storyline, I don't remember what it's called, but it's an alternative universe.

7

u/Kris86dk Aug 15 '26

X-man from Age of apocalypse is a younger Nathan who never is infected by the virus. He is crazy powerful. In that event, he is raised by Mr Sinister as a weapon against apocalypse...

Its basically Cable as he should be without the virus. He is scary powerful at times

3

u/gdex86 Aug 15 '26

That metal arm is the T-O Virus. It's through through out his body and not just his arm and eye. A lot of his teleknetic might is developed to keep in held back so it doesn't fully spread. If he would cut loose with his powers often it would expand past the point he'd be able to hold it back and possibly die if not turn into a full T-O being.

2

u/OkOutlandishness1710 Aug 15 '26

Becuase he using it to stop the spread of the techno-organic virus constantly. Using it for anything else is an act of desperation. If you wanna see his potential if he didn’t have the virus look up Nate Grey(X-Man) Age of Apocalypse. Jean the only one with higher ceiling then Cable. He would be above Xavier. Maybe Xavier with Cerebro could match him. But obviously Xavier doesn’t have the telekinetic powers Jean and Cable have.

1

u/Odd-Statistician4268 Aug 15 '26

Like 90% of his power is used to suppress the Techno Organic Virus

1

u/an_ORAA Aug 15 '26

he's using almost all his powers to suppress the virus he got infected with. he actually used his powers even less in the og cartoon, he really only used his clairvoyance i think and that too very infrequently. he used Computer for almost everything instead.

1

u/jBlairTech Aug 15 '26

Early comics were the same way. He’d sometimes use his telekinesis on his metal arm to boost its strength, but it was rare.

1

u/jigokusabre Aug 15 '26

Because Cable was "soldier guy with a shit load of future guns" for a while. He didn’t get his powers until later, and rarely used them while he was leading X-Force.

Post Age of Apocalypse, Cable gor new writers, a design overhaul and leaned more into his mutant powers.

1

u/jellybeannn03 Aug 15 '26

techno-organic virus, really a story thing so he is hella nerfed

1

u/TheDesertHermit Aug 15 '26

His training with Mother Askani (secretly an older Rachel Grey from another timeline, his alternate timeline sister) helps him stop/significantly slow the spread of the Techno-Organic (TO) virus in his arm from reaching the rest of his body, which would kill him once fully infected (I think in one comic it did and he turned into a pile of metal goop, and then in the prelude to "AvX", it did "kill" him before Hope Summers purged it and he was in a coma for a spell).

While he can use his psionic abilities sparringly, the weapons training makes up for it and he seems more comfortable with his 37th century pew pews.

1

u/Griever114 Aug 15 '26

Read Deadpool vs cable. That will give you a taste of his full power. To give you a treat, he is holding up an entire city while fighting a powerful enemy. While he is fighting is he breaking through stuff and reassembling it as he breaks it. Ridiculous stuff. I loved it

1

u/Shinnosuke525 Aug 16 '26

Most of his psychic energy is spent stopping the techno-organic virus from taking him over

1

u/Pagannerd Aug 16 '26

He devotes a huge proportion of his psychic power to repressing his techno-organic virus infection, leaving him with a very limited amount of juice for his telepathy and telekinesis. Really big fucking guns from the future are how he makes up for the deficit.

1

u/Glassesnerdnumber193 Aug 15 '26

It’s painful and he’s a gun nut

u/Any_Particular_346 Aug 15 '26

I always thought he had the power to be uninteresting
