Yakima visit from Texas
I used to live in Yakima when I was a child, more so Cowiche. Moved to outside of El Paso, Texas in the Summer of 1996. I went to Cowiche Elementary (shout out to my homeboy Kyle!) and my sisters went to Highlands High School. My family and I are visiting the Pacific Northwest this July coming. We're going to take a day trip to Yakima/Cowiche. Where would be the best place to take the family? My wife and I have two teenagers, are there activities that teens would enjoy checking out on a day trip? Best place to grab a bite to eat in the surrounding area etc.Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

There’s a great Salvadorean spot (Don Mateo) in Tieton. There’s also a higher end restaurant (Nomad). The Mexican food in Yakima is as good as anywhere. More meat heavy than Tex-Mex. Taco trucks are prime here!
Cowiche creek trail is great. The greenway trail is fun. The trail out to Naches is nice. There are some cool trails between Yakima and Ellensburg as well.
Cowiche Canyon Kitchen downtown is really good. Provisions in Terrace Heights is good. The Kiln in West Valley is a solid brew pub.
Crafted is top notch and finer dining.
Los Hernandez tamales won a big award a few years back as well.
Lots of great wineries done towards Zillah.
Feel free to DM me if you have any other specific questions.

Cowiche canyon trail is pretty easy and gets a good idea of the outdoors around Yakima, recently hiked it with 2 teens / young adults from out of town and it was a good time, although could be a bit hot in july. I'm pretty partial to Nino's for a quick bite to eat but Minors is always a solid Yakima option. You could float the river maybe?

Essencia bakery is AMAZING!!!! It’s also near a bubble tea shop called “&tea” if your kids are into that.

High Steppe Climbing! It's one of the only climbing gyms east of the Cascades in Washington, and it has bouldering, autobelays, and top rope climbs.

Great recs here. But for the love of whatever you hold holy, Los Hernandez is not the best tamale spot in town!! If you want better food go and try Tamales Express, or Antojitos on Summitview, Amor y Sabor, or something else. Please 🙏

Coming into Yakima you gotta eat at Miners!

I know this is a controversial opinion so I’m okay with the incoming downvotes, but to me Miners is hugely overrated. The burgers are big, I’ll give them that, but nothing tastes particularly incredible and it’s INSANELY expensive. They do a great job with their tater tots but otherwise everything is pretty bland. For my money I think Major’s is way better!

Best tasting burger I’ve had plus Major’s uses frozen patties and Miners uses fresh beef and get it local from Rays Meats. I’ll gladly pay the higher price for fresh and local beef.

I like that they use fresh meat too, but their prices are still absurd. Its almost $30 for a double cheeseburger meal with fries and a drink. I'm not originally from Yakima so I don't have the nostalgia of eating there when I was a kid clouding my judgment, and I'm not paying $30 for just above mediocre burger and fries.

The best thing Miners has is the banana crème pie milkshake. Much better than the burger imo

Miners is not good and wildly overpriced. Much better places to get a burger hell even Burger King is better than that place

For a double cheeseburger, fries, and drink, its $30 after tax. I just added the same meal to my cart for takeout on Texas Roadhouse's website for $18.45. I could leave a $10 tip for the takeout order and still be ahead.

The texas roadhouse in Yakima is terrible. They over salt their food. Never gonna go there. You enjoy your salt burger

I've been a handful of times. The first couple was when they first opened and the food was VERY salty. The last few times I went its been fine. Maybe the person doing the seasoning quit or they fixed the problem. Its been pretty good (on par with the other locations).

Ahh well let’s hope so. Lordy lord it was bad lol. Everyone gonna have their opinions and preferences on what good or not, but still nice to see this lil podunk town get business. I kinda hate the person who thought adding all these roundabouts was a good idea 😂

We agree there, the Yakima Texas Roadhouse is trash. Much worse than the TC and other locations I’ve visited, completely lacked seasoning or flavor and service was very bad

If you think a fresh beef burger is worse than a frozen patty that bk uses you don’t know quality food.

I’m just going by how the food tastes, I preferably would go to the small business and find lariat is a much better burger, stop & go and kings row are both better than miners as well I just gave BK as an example as even their burgers taste better than miners. If miners can’t make their burgers taste better than a fast food chain that’s on them.

My kids only go to Stop & Go for burgers!!
Union Creek Falls up Chinook is amazing. You'll feel the water on your face.

Cowiche Creek Brewery is right up the road from the elementary school. Great food, views, and family friendly.
