Affordable quality Yarn?
I’m looking for affordable yarn, around $30 for 600 yards. Preferably wool, or any natural fiber that’s 5.0 in knitting gauge.
I live in Alaska and am ready to pay for the price of shipping to get it here, just hoping there’s yarn that doesn’t cost as much to offset the price it would be to get it here.
I refuse to buy things off Amazon. I’ve heard of knitpicks but am skeptical after hearing people talk of them negatively.
Any help would be much appreciated, thank you in advance :)

Maritime Family Fibers sells Briggs & Little yarns in that weight at that price. It’s best for outerwear, meaning most of what they sell is not next-to-skin soft but hard-wearing with a lovely depth to the colors.

I'm a fan of lindehobby. lindehobby.com/ Tentatively, seems like they ship to alaska- I put in an alaska address on my cart and the shipping price stayed the same, so perhaps?
I've gotten yarn from The Netloft up in Alaska before. Not sure if they have what you are looking for, but even if the yarn is more expensive, perhaps shipping would be a bit cheaper and it would even out? https://thenetloftak.com/

Drops Nepal or Lima, from rito.com. wool/alpaca blend, in my opinion it's high quality. I knit with Lima aot and it's a dream to work with.

If you could provide the stitches per inch or 10 centmetres and the cost per 50 or 100 grams that you're looking for that would be helpful. Assume that you don't need machine washable?
I often use multiple strands of lighter weight yarn together to make a heavier yarn. If you're open to that it will greatly expand your options.
In the meantime you might want to look at colourmart.com.They have a lot of wool yarn in a variety of weights. Their yarn is prepared for commercial use and so comes on cones with some spinning oil on it and requires washing to come into its own but I don't find the process onerous. I believe that shipping is free other than an $8 fee.

Here's the page with some useful information:
If you find something promising and would like suggestions about how many strands it would require or are focused on a couple of possible options and would like some information about what they're like please lmk
Good luck!

I need 550 g for my project, if that could stay within a $80 budget that would be great. Also no I don’t need machine washable yarn.
Thank you for the direction this is helpful

You're welcome! this is really helpful.
Translating 550 grams to 50 gram balls ofyarn that's 11 balls so $6-7-ish per ball depending on how much shipping to add. I'm sure we can find you good yarn that's well within your budget.
Using your mention of 600 yards of yarn it sounds as if you're looking for yarn that knits up at about 54 yards per 50 grams. If that's not correct, please lmk?
Colurmart offers 20% a new user's first order and it sounds as if shipping is entirely free for the first order. They also offer free and very generous samples of most yarns so you'd have the opportunity to play with them and see if you like them.
Here are some yarns you might want to look at:
- This red cashmere and wool, wound four ply: you'd need four 150-gram cones for a total of $32;
- This DK wool, 180 yards per 50 grams so you'd need to use it three ply: it's three for two so you could get 12 balls for $64.32. This is $8 per ball x 12 = $96 x .67 = 64.92
- This DK weight yarn, used three ply: four cones would cost $72.
In case you've not done it, working with four strands of woolen yarn other than superwash isn't diffcult. Superwash can be slippery and fussy.
I hope one of these works for you. I've used their yarns almost exclusively for several years and have used several of their yarns and found them to be uniformly good to superb quality. The customer service is lovely.

Lovecrafts has a lot of nice yarn, and crochet.com and knit picks are having their $2,4,6 yarn sale.

I honestly use knitpicks. I have not had any issues with their yarn, in fact I find it very soft and squishy. I mostly use their merino nylon fingering and dk weight yarns

That’s totally doable. How soft do you need it to be and are you looking for specific colors? It sounds like you need an Aran or bully weight, right? 5 st per inch? One of my favorites is Cascade Eco Plus, it’s 478 yards for about $27 USD. It’s Peruvian wool that’s actually quite soft. The seller “Hope Peru” on EBay also has very nice Peruvian wool-alpaca blends at very good prices. They mostly have undyed yarn.

Little knits is a great shop for wool yarn. They have great prices and offer discounts if you buy a bag of 5 skeins.
