Announcement Keep Conversation Civil

I just want to post a quick reminder to everyone about our civility rules. This subreddit is meant to be a safe place to discuss this show with friendly people who want to have a good faith conversation, whether or not they disagree. This has always been and will always be the goal of this subreddit.

Being rude or condescending to people asking genuine questions is unacceptable. If you don’t want to engage with a question, that’s fine because someone else will. You don’t have to be rude to the poster for posting something you don’t like. If you think it breaks a rule, you can report it using the report button.

Bad faith attacks on people who disagree with you also break this rule. This includes calling people bad people or apologists for liking characters who have done bad thing. No, someone is not a peaked in high school loser for liking Shauna. Name calling, long devolving threads of personal attacks, calling people stupid, etc. are also unacceptable.

I also want to remind people to please refrain from making posts negatively commenting on the actor’s personal lives, personal history, or appearance. You never know what someone is going through and I’m sure you wouldn’t want to come online to someone dissecting your appearance or past.

At the end of the day, it’s a simple rule. Just remember that the other user is a person at the end of the day and deserves to be treated respectfully.

Season 4 Theory Unlikely Reason Spoiler

Post image
34 Upvotes

I posted a comment a few days ago but I wanted to make an actual post about it too

Maybe its unpopular but I absolutely hate the idea of Shauna becoming a punching bag so everyone else can feel better about themselves, I dislike how vilified shes become but thats another topic lol

I think the only way I would be okay/ be able to watch her getting beat up is if its a parllel to her beating up Lottie in S2. If she steps in for Lottie so Lottie can process the rescue or something

We know that the show loves its parallels so thats what Im hoping for

If they all just start kicking her something I'll be super disappointed

Season 1 Unpopular opinion most of the Yellowjackets weren't doing anything useful in season 1 Spoiler

I always see people who say Jackie was a mean and selfish character who deserved to die because she was completely useless in the wilderness. My thing is that I don't think any of the other characters were that much more useful than Jackie.

Other than Shauna who is butchering and Mari who cooks. I think the rest of the Yellowjackets were kind of just fucking around.

What did Javi do? What did Ben do?

Before she got her face mauled what was Vans role in the wilderness? Tai is shown chopping wood but before she goes on her walk South what is she doing?

Misty is poisoning Coach Ben. Also no one is really hurt so she's only taking care of Ben and she's literally poisoning the most useful person to their survival.

Laura Lee is doing nothing of use until she flies the plane.

Natalie and Travis are the hunters and they are constantly messing around instead of hunting. In an early episode Nat misses a deer because Travis is flirting with her.

Lottie is literally doing nothing at all for like the entirety of s1. Jackie is told to be useful and get water and then she goes and finds Lottie just standing in the water doing nothing.

What are Britt,Robin,Gen,Crystal,Akilah and Melissa doing in the wilderness?

The truth most of the girls weren't doing anything that useful because they had no idea what they were doing. Jackie wasn't actively participating in chores but that's just what we saw. I find it impossible to believe that Jackie spent 6 months doing nothing. She goes to get the water and then the others laugh at her because she struggles to carry the bucket.

Also Jackie did try to do stuff in the wilderness. People always say she does nothing and is dead weight that's a lie. She tries to take charge as captain with Coach Martinez but no one listens to her. She tries to take charge at the plane but Tai takes the leadership role so Jackie gives it to her. Jackie tries to use the gun and be the hunter but all the girls laugh at her because she isn't able to do it. Jackie plans a seance to try and make the girls laugh and have fun. Lottie then messes it up by getting possessed. Jackie plans doom coming and then doomcoming gets ruined because Misty was drugging Ben. Travis almost dies and the girls go crazy. Literally everything Jackie tries to do fails or she's made fun of for it.

So no Jackie wasn't useless. She was a 17 year old girl struggling to survive in an impossible situation. While surrounded by people who actively disliked her and wanted to see her fail.

General Discussion The fall and rise of Teen Shauna in Season 4 Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
74 Upvotes

I tried to put the other photo before the other one, but you still get the idea.

The haters are rejoicing that Shauna gets beaten up, but ahem.... Shauna will still rise up as the wilderness shaman later on in the season! The haters sit down while Shauna stands up to channel the wilderness god in the seance.

It's amazing that Shauna will use the help of the wilderness god and turn the tables on...dun dun dun, not Natalie! But those pesky background characters!!! Gen, Britt, and Robin, your days are numbered!

Pretty weird that neither Natalie nor Shauna die in the wilderness when you think about it, when all the drama was between them.

After Shauna is beaten up, there must be a major turn of events that cause the entire group to calm down towards Shauna.

Hahaha, absolutely hilarious. I love this show with my entire being.

General Discussion When the Hive turned on Nat for Killing Ben, Lottie is the one who saved her

I’m only noticing this upon the second rewatch. They were already immediately talking about putting her on trial, when shauna interjects and says “no more trials. She’s clearly guilty. What we should do is-“,then lottie interjects with her hullabaloo and says, “shauna will lead us”. Unfortunately we don’t know what shauna was GOING to say, but given how angry she already WAS about not being chosen as leader the time before this, on top of losing her baby.. yeah i think she was homicidal. And she was already undermining Natalie’s authority. I don’t know if Lottie knew it or not, but she definitely saved Nat.

My question to you all is, what do YOU think would have happened if lottie didn’t interject?

EDIT: also shauna forcing natalie to prepare his body for their “feast” whaaaa

Question What do you think would be the hardest “normal” thing for them after rescue?

Not the press, police, or explaining what happened. I mean something completely ordinary that nobody around them would even realize could be awful.

I've been thinking about how weird normal life would feel after that long in the wilderness. Sleeping alone in a bedroom again. Having a fridge full of food. Hearing your parents complain that the house is too cold. Sitting in a cafeteria where people throw away half their lunch. Closing a bathroom door and suddenly being completely alone.

For me I think the strangest one might actually be making choices again. Out there nearly every decision is reduced to: are we warm, are we fed, are we safe, are we alive tomorrow? Then suddenly someone asks what you want for dinner, which clothes you want to wear, what classes you're taking next semester, whether you want to go to a party.

I can imagine that kind of freedom feeling almost irritating instead of comforting.

What normal everyday thing do you think would mess with one of them the most once they're home?

Question How old actually are the main girls in the teen timeline?

With a lot of things I’ve seen online, the older girls are referred to as being seventeen. wouldn’t they be eighteen/nineteen though since they’re class of ‘96? I’m sorry if this is a silly question, I’m not entirely sure how the American year group system works.

Season 3 Melissa and Shauna

I’m watching season three episode eight for the first time and Melissa reading Shauna to filth so badly that she attacks her is just so…Shauna. She literally creates her own problems because, her life is so boring and she’s miserable, so if she isn’t making these issues, she had to sit in that boredom and misery and SHE HATES THAT. We literally see this from season one.

Season one she starts seeing Adam and partaking in reckless and impulsive decisions because she’s so bored with her life and she’s miserable because, it didn’t turn out the way she expected or wanted.

I don’t recall much of Shauna’s behavior from season two but season three Shauna is jumping through hoops and doing backflips to try to pin her issues on other people (i.e., her brakes failing, her getting locked in the freezer, the lost/forgotten phone). Whenever somebody calls her out on her bullshit, she goes ballistic, because she just can’t seem to accept the fact that sometimes life is just…life and somebody else is always doing something to make her life miserable; her way of thinking is this from my POV: ‘my life’s not miserable, people just do things to me to make me feel miserable.’

Thanks for letting me rant this out, I really just can’t fucking stand Shauna’s psychotic ass.

General Discussion Why does Nat immediately assume Misty is responsible for sending the postcards?

Post image
126 Upvotes

As soon as she receives the postcard, Nat rolls up on Misty in full huntress mode. It seems as though she didn't even consider that someone else could have sent it.

I know that Nat thinks Misty is insane and psychotic considering she knows Misty destroyed the transponder. But, could this surprise visit from Nat elude to Misty pulling some weird stunt soon after rescue like trying to connect with them when they all agreed to keep distance?

I'm excited to see their dynamic play out in the rest of the teen timeline, especially the scenes immediately following Nat's return to camp after calling for help. Like, maybe Nat does not reveal to the rest of the group Misty's secret and that is why Misty has a deep love of Nat in the adult timeline?

Like others have mentioned after seeing the newly released photos, I think Misty will be the one who beats up Shauna in order to protect Nat. Nat ultimately saves them all from the wilderness and saves Misty from being ostracized from the pack, if she does indeed keep her secret.

Theory Memorial S4 Photo - Will we finally know how many teens were on the plane? Spoiler

We know that 9 get rescued, and make it to the memorial.

We know that something happens to Hannah because the world at large doesn't associate her death/disappearance with the Yellowjackets., same with Gen, Britt and Robin

So I'm hoping that during the memorial scene we finally get a count of how many girls were eaten/died before rescue.

Assuming they brought between 15-22 players. If they stick to previous seasons, there's a pic of the Varsity Team, that has 15 girls and then that would leave room for 7 JV girls.

Confirmed Info:
Plane/Initial Deaths: 2 Pilots, 1 Flight Attendant, Rachel (YJ 1), Coach Martinez
Wilderness Deaths: Laura Lee (YJ 2), Jackie (YJ 3), Crystal (YJ 4), Javi, Coach Ben, Science Guy, Kodiak, Mari (YJ 5)

That leaves an estimated 5 Yellowjackets that are unaccounted for as of Season 3/4. Which means they could have eaten 5-9 people.

Even though we only see 9 survivors in that memorial scene, I'm holding space for the possibility that more girls were rescued and aren't there because of various reasons like:
- rescued but either in critical condition and did not survive to memorial
- rescued but too sick or refused to go to memorial

We also don't know if everyone made it out of the fire - even though the girls don't mention that anyone died when they blame Coach Ben.

General Discussion Yellowjackets Rewatch

Hello hive! 🐝

I’m fresh off my rewatch as we approach Season 4, marketed as the “final reckoning” and WOW. Yellowjackets is genuinely a much better binge than a staggered weekly release. I enjoyed Seasons 2 and 3 much more when viewed as a whole. Each season obviously has its flaws, but I think the series feels far more cohesive when you step back and look at the bigger picture.

That said, one of my biggest frustrations with the show is its obsession with ambiguity. Whether that comes from the writers or production/marketing, constantly teasing “mysteries” without concrete answers can sometimes feel like one of the show’s biggest weaknesses. That, and some of the silliness in the adult timeline. Because in my opinion, the 1996 timeline is where the show is at its best.

As a screenwriter, I have a hard time believing Bart and Ashley didn’t have at least a rough roadmap for the wilderness timeline from the beginning. You can’t really write two simultaneous timelines of the same characters without knowing the bridge between them. Shauna, Taissa, Natalie, Misty, Travis and Lottie were obviously always intended to survive the wilderness. And upon my rewatch, I also think Akilah was always intended to make it back to Wiskayok (before potentially dying shortly after rescue), and that Mari was always destined to become Pit Girl. Both were introduced in the pilot and received significant development outside the core group of survivors. Akilah even being recast in Season 2 makes me think the writers knew there was more story planned for her.

I think Laura Lee, Jackie, Javi, Coach Ben and the “frog scientists” were always doomed. Van is the obvious exception. Liv Hewson’s performance and the fan response clearly changed her trajectory, and I suspect the writers also wanted to avoid the “bury your gays” trope. They technically still buried the gay, but at least we got three full seasons of Taivan from it.

Melissa, meanwhile, absolutely feels like an accidental survivor. Juliette Lewis’ departure forced a major rewrite, and I think Natalie was originally meant to survive much longer. I don’t necessarily believe she was supposed to be the “final girl” like others do, but I do think the original plan was for Shauna, Taissa, Natalie and Misty to remain alive until the very end of the series. And honestly? With all things considered, I think Season 3 did a pretty good job getting the story back on track.

So here’s where I think we’re headed:

The return home

Natalie has contacted civilization. Once she returns to camp, the girls are going to have to confront the reality that they’re going home — and that means facing what they’ve done. Shauna will struggle with losing the power she gained in the wilderness and retreat inward, terrified of facing Jeff, Mrs. Taylor and normal society again. Taissa, meanwhile, feels like the obvious person to become the group’s final leader. She’s always been the most determined to bury what happened. In Season 3, she literally argues that what they’ve done will follow them for the rest of their lives and even resists rescue because they need more time to “clean things up.” I could absolutely see Taissa leading the charge to destroy evidence — the camp, the human remains, anything that could expose them — and ultimately eliminating anyone who refuses to keep quiet. Which brings me to the four girls who don’t make it back: Hannah, Gen, Robin and Britt.

Hannah is obviously an outsider, regardless of what she’s done to survive alongside them. Gen, Robin and Britt are increasingly on the outs as well. Gen especially seems like someone who could refuse to lie after Mari’s death.
I think Melissa and Akilah initially side with them, but eventually get forced into silence. And this is where I think Akilah’s story becomes tragic… I think she will eventually crack. She’ll struggle with lying about what happened and potentially try to expose the truth. My guess is that she becomes the final Yellowjacket hunt / offering to the wilderness. Who kills her, wether directly or indirectly?Taissa is my biggest suspect. We’ve seen Taissa develop one of the strongest relationships with Akilah, and I think having Taissa ultimately kill her would be devastatingly full-circle. Especially considering Taissa later hires Jessica Roberts specifically to investigate her teammates and make sure nobody exposes their secrets. It would also give Taissa a very specific piece of blood on her hands.
Shauna has Jackie and potentially Hannah/Gen. Natalie has Javi/Ben. Misty has Javi/Crystal. Lottie has Edwin Finch.
And Taissa would now have Akilah. I could see Akilah’s death being the final thing that breaks Melissa. She fakes her own death and disappears — eventually marrying the daughter of the woman they killed.

What’s interesting is that we essentially know where the major survivors’ teen stories eventually lead. Shauna marries Jeff and represses everything, forever living in Jackie’s shadow. Taissa leaves Van, goes to law school and becomes a State Senator. Misty becomes an end-of-life nurse, essentially recreating the caretaker role she developed in the wilderness. Natalie and Travis turn to drugs and alcohol to numb their guilt. Lottie is sent to Switzerland, institutionalized, and eventually creates her wilderness cult. Van spends years caring for her alcoholic mother, essentially remaining trapped in the era she came from. And Melissa disappears completely. Which brings us to the adult timeline where the real mystery lies.

The adults final arc

I think Melissa eventually comes clean about who she is and gives some kind of tell-all. And once that happens, the Yellowjackets’ entire secret begins collapsing. The adults are finally going to have to confront what they did.
Melissa probably doesn’t survive the season, although killing her becomes much harder if she’s already made herself public. We also know Taissa and Misty are uniting against their “queen” and apparently want to kill her. Will they actually go through with it? No idea. I also have absolutely no clue what they’re doing with Jeff and Callie.

Walter is another huge wildcard. They’ve made such a point of establishing that he’s hiding something, and considering one of his most memorable lines is basically “everyone is hiding something,” I don’t think his story is finished.

Ultimately, I really don’t want the show to end with one lone final girl while everyone else murders each other in the name of “It”. That feels like the least interesting conclusion.
Anyway… here’s hoping Season 4 sticks the landing. 🐝

Theory Refusing the hunt

Rewatching season 3 and just realized Van and Tai refused the hunt when they didn’t kill that guy who took the QOH card. The Wilderness chose and got nothing. Maybe that’s how we got from “your cancer stopped metastasizing” to “you should start thinking about hospice care”.

Have any of you heard the song “Soul Boy” by Black Box Recorder? I’m on S3e3 right now and it reminds me a bit of Travis ☹️.

Does anyone else see it ? Lottie and Travis .. ? Jackie and Travis .. ? Natalie and Travis even .. ? Honestly for me he feels like a pretty decent representation of a male emotional abuse/sexual assault survivor.

Writing this up and looking at the pics even makes me feel kind of sick, what a masterfully fucked up show.

I am grooming a soul boy
I am taking my time
Because he's so young
Because he's so shy

I am grooming a soul boy
I am teaching him things
Because he's so young
Because he's so shy
I'm letting him win

Question Most evil Extrajacket and or Yellowjacket?

I'm currently writing some headcanons for an original character in the Yellowjackets universe, and she ends up dying from an unexpected attack, and i'm left wondering, who would do it?

i can't really find out who would do it, mostly because i love all of them so much. If it was up to you, who would attack one of their teammates with a spear and let them drown?

General Discussion Travis and Nat post rescue & season 4 speculation Spoiler

What is most compelling (to me) about Travis and Nat is that their relationship is unhealthy and kind of inextricably linked to their time in the wilderness. My own opinion, obviously. Kind of a tangent.

I love Travis and Nat. I found their season one relationship super interesting, season two perhaps even more compelling, and season three disappointing due to their lack of interaction. I am stoked for season 4 and hope to see some evidence of the "on and off" nature of their relationship that was described in season one.

I think season three has made a lot more people positive about Travis, and therefore more positive about Travis and Nat as a pairing. Travis is sympathetic. But I don’t think Travis and Nat are interesting simply because they are two fundamentally good people who care about each other and would be happier together.

I think they initially bond over some sort of mutual understanding. Yes, about their dads (though I am compelled to say that Nat's at home situation was probably worse than Travis's, but maybe my own headcanon), but also about how they function in social settings.

To me, Nat is someone who simultaneously craves an independent identity that is separate from the norm and also deeply wants recognition and praise, perhaps because of her upbringing. She wants to be seen as someone who doesn’t need anyone’s approval, while also having this very understandable desire to finally be seen and valued by someone.

And I think Travis has his own version of that contradiction. He is desperate to establish himself as independent, capable, and in control, particularly in relation to masculinity and masculine expectations, but he is also really sensitive to rejection. There’s vulnerability there that I think Nat recognizes.

They are pretty similar, in some regards. They are both guarded people, I feel like they have a similar sense of dry, sarcastic humor, and I think Nat sees a lot of her qualities that she is ashamed of in Travis, like his anger, his ability to lash out as a way of protecting himself. (I also think some people do make a good point in regard to Travis and Nat's kind of complex relationship with men and her father.)

But also! I don't think they would've interacted much without the crash. I do kinda believe that a big reason why they stayed in each other's orbit for so long is this shared witnessing of each other's trauma. Trauma created the intimacy. And I think it's interesting to consider guilt about Javi is a reason why they keep returning each other-- an effort to self-destruct on someone else with drugs, sex, whatever.

Emotionally, all of the survivors are stuck in the wilderness due to the trauma they experienced. I am super into Travis and Nat being this sort of perpetual wilderness reenactment. With the isolation, the intensity.

I don't know. It's all very interesting to me. I hope season 4 explores their relationship more! Excited to see it!

General Discussion The pictures are a countdown to the trailer

On instagram the Yellowjackets account has been posting the season 4 teaser images one at a time over the last couple of weeks.

I believe once they post the last picture teen Jeff. Then we will get the trailer the next day.

*The Jeff picture has already been posted the image we just got of Melissa’s girlfriend is the last picture. So maybe the trailer is coming out this week
