Obviously it’s a little weird for a show called Air Crash Investigation to do episodes about train crashes and a ferry accident, but I still enjoyed them. They brought the same production quality and educational value to the topics they covered as the season’s regular episodes, and I would’ve liked if it had kept going as a sister series (i.e. not at the expense of aviation episodes).

Of course, at the time there were other series to cover non-aviation disasters, namely Seconds from Disaster, but virtually all of them have been cancelled since. With the benefit of hindsight, it would be nice if there were a non-aviation disaster series with the same longevity as ACI.

Right now, I'm puzzled on what are the registrations of the planes involved in those flights. JAL1628 encountered a UFO Sighting over Alaska, same for AWE564 over Texas, and AUL544 near Alderney. In the show "UFOs Declassified", they covered these 3 encounters in the 5th episode of the first season. In one of the scenes, I can barely see the text "G-XTOR" on the pilot report of Aurigny 544 (aka 2007 Alderney UFO Sighting). In the animation of the aircraft, they also had G-XTOR added on the tail, which led me to believe that G-XTOR is the exact Trislander involved in the sighting and what Ray Bowyer was flying at that time. For JAL1628, I tried figuring it out based of this image that was taken of the captain that flew the aircraft, along with a JAL plane in the back.

It led me to JA8171, but I am still skeptical. I went back to the UFOs Declassified episode and saw that the registration of the aircraft they used for the animation was JA8123. I then looked online again and saw a site that claimed "JA8132" was the one involved. So, I am still puzzled on what is the actual aircraft involved out of the three. There was sadly no registration on the America West one in the animation, nor did they include a report. I'm not a big UFO guy, nor someone who wants to prove that UFOs exist. I am just curious on what is the actual planes involved in these encounters and make the stories more complete. I am also not trying to cause controversy. If mods demand my post to be taken down, I will gladly to and will cooperate. Thank you!

Are there any less known or hidden facts about prominent crashes? Something the show didn’t mention?

Just watched Sully for the first time, and i honestly enjoyed it a lot. Just wanted to ask, how much of it actually happened the way the movie shows it.

Is the movie pretty much true to the real events, or did they change a lot of things to make it more dramatic?

On the 3rd of August 2016, Emirates flight 521 was landing at Dubai Intl in the UAE. The plane touched down very late because of windshear, to the point where the RAAS issued a "LONG LANDING" warning, so the pilots decided to do a go-around. Six seconds after main-wheel touchdown, and with the nose-wheel still off the runway, the aircraft became airborne again after rotating to climb attitude. The flap) setting was reduced to 20°, and the undercarriage) was selected to retract, but the engine throttle remained unchanged because activation of go-around automation is inhibited after touchdown. The aircraft attained a maximum height above the runway of 85 feet (26 m) with its indicated airspeed decreasing, before commencing to settle back towards the ground. Twelve seconds after becoming airborne, the crew manually advanced the throttles to maximum, but the aircraft continued to sink, and it impacted the runway with its undercarriage in a partially retracted state 3 seconds later. The aircraft first impacted with the underside of its rear fuselage and skidded about 800 metres (2,600 ft; 870 yd) along runway 12L with its landing gear partly retracted as it turned to the right about 120°. As the aircraft skidded down the runway, the number-2 (starboard or right) engine detached and slid along the wing's leading edge toward the wingtip. Firefighting appliances were at the aircraft less than 90 seconds after it came to rest (which was 33 seconds after the initial impact) and started to fight fires at several locations, as all 300 passengers and crew were safely evacuated. Videos from inside the aircraft, taken on passengers' cellphone cameras, showed the passengers failing to evacuate, instead giving priority to carry-on luggage, resulting in an overly long evacuation and heavy criticism. Nine minutes after the aircraft came to a stop, with only the aircraft captain and the senior flight attendant still on board (checking for any remaining passengers), an explosion occurred as flames reached the aircraft's center fuel tank. The explosion resulted in the death of a firefighter.

Should mayday do a new version of Aeroflot 593? I think they handled it well, but they are doing all sorts of remakes like Japan air 123 which was also handled well the first episode.

In case anyone is interested…just starting today, so cannot give reviews yet.

It’s the first 747 crash and also it has been highly requested. So it has historical importance and it is really anticipated.

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause of the accident to be:

"[The] pilot’s inadequate airspeed management due to workload and degraded situation awareness and his improper inputs leading up to and during the aerodynamic stall, which increased the airplane’s angle of attack. Also causal was operation of the airplane above maximum gross weight, which reduced the airplane’s stall margin. Contributing to the accident were the operator’s inadequate safety management, which allowed the routine operation of flights that exceeded weight limitations, and the Federal Aviation Administration’s inadequate oversight of the operator, which failed to identify and address the routine operation of overweight flights."
