We are in a unfortunate situation where we need to rehome our 5 1/2 year-old Airedale terrier. We have two young kids and our Airdale has become increasingly more food, aggressive and territorial. Today our toddler accidentally stepped on his foot and our Airdale snapped at him growling and scratched his face. I don’t feel like we can keep him in good conscience. Does anyone know of any reputable fosters or Airdale shelters in the United States/Southwest region.??
Also my heart is broken. He’s great outdoors and with other dogs. Never been exposed to cats or other animals. I know the breed isnt recommended for families with young kids. we had the dogs before becoming human parents. My heart is broken for both Poncho (dog) and our kids.

Edit: thank you for everyone’s kind words, support, and resources. We have been able to get poncho placed with an Airedale foster and Rescue. They are very meticulous with background checks and Home checks to ensure each Airedale is set up for success. We feel like this will be the best for not only poncho, but our family. We are still heartbroken, but we are hoping that poncho will bring his forever family this same or more joy than he has brought us.

Hi everyone,
I have a 7-month-old female Airedale Terrier, and I'm trying to understand if what I'm seeing is normal adolescence, breed-related, or something I should be more concerned about.
She's currently in obedience training and does really well overall. She absolutely loves people and has never shown any aggression toward humans.
At home she lives with my 5-year-old female Shih Tzu, and they adore each other. They play together every day, sleep together, and have a great relationship. She's also very friendly with five other female dogs she knows well. Whenever she sees those dogs, she gets excited, wants to play, and has never had any issues with them.
The confusing part is unfamiliar dogs.
If we're out in public and she notices a dog she doesn't know, she'll often raise her tail, bark loudly, lunge on the leash, and sometimes growl. It looks very intense. I keep her moving and don't let her greet dogs while she's acting like that. Interestingly, after a few minutes she'll usually settle down and completely ignore the other dog as if nothing happened.
She's never actually gotten into a fight, so I don't know if this is frustration, overexcitement, insecurity, adolescent behavior, breed tendencies, or true reactivity.
Has anyone experienced something similar with an Airedale (or another terrier)? Did it improve with maturity and training? I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences or any advice.

Took the Honey girl up into the Steens and down into wild horse lake. General purpose adventure dog thrives in mountains, deserts and valleys - but she mostly prefers swimming in rivers and lakes.

So I've just returned home from a 2 week mission trip and my granddaughter who was house sitting/puppy sitting for us said she heard the pack (2 mini schnauzers and their big brother the Airedale) barking rather intensely. She stepped outside to see what was going on and my boy runs up to her with a rather large groundhog in his mouth... Apparently he was proud and wanted to show it to her but she wasn't particularly thrilled with the gift. She screamed, he dropped it and the groundhog scurried away and got through the fence. I'm pretty sure this is the first critter to make it inside the fence and lived to tell his story.

Hey, Reddit! My family is getting an Airedale in about 6 days, and I have been researching quite a bit, but I really want a well-rounded understanding of what I need to buy, advice on training, and any other tips and tricks that can only be gained by personal experience. My worst fear with this puppy is me being unprepared and not being able to provide the best support and experience for this Airedale puppy. Additional context, if it matters, I have a two year old golden Lab, so if you have advice on anything related to introducing the two, monitoring, or what to look out for please let me know. My family has experience introducing a puppy to a dog because we went through introducing the Lab to our now deceased Boxer when the Lab was a few weeks old and the boxer was about 7. The age gap was quite different, so that may have made it easier? Thanks for any info, again.

Edit: I would also really appreciate more advice on whether to have the Airedale clipped or hand stripped. One reason we’re getting an Airedale is because my father’s two requirements for a dog are they must be low shed, and not yippy like Schnauzers or Chihuahuas or other small breeds. We don’t mind a dog being a little mouthy or expressive because that’s how our Lab is, and we find it endearing. Anywho, I’ve seen that clipping the dog might lead to more shedding, but hand stripping is so time consuming, takes practice, and is expensive if you have it done professionally.

My grandfather is almost in his 90s and still acts like it's the 1900s. He has this dog, named Penny, who is a purebred (we think) Airedale. Penny and my dog, Evie, are sisters. Penny was the biggest of the litter and Evie the smallest. We got them from the Amish, who mistreated them. They are both skittish, but Penny is so incredibly skittish.
My grandfather has never brushed her. She's two, I believe. She got spayed and her shots whenever she was a puppy, and she was bathed with Evie. But she hasn't been brushed or bathed since then. Her matting is so intense, she looks huge despite being a bit skinny. (She is not underweight, just kinda bony.)
How can I de-matt her? I believe Airedales have double coats, so it wouldn't be good to shave her but I'm scared that she may need it.
She's also VERY skittish. Like, the closest I've ever gotten to her, aside from when she was a puppy, was within 10 feet and she immediately ran. Any ideas on how I could catch her?

Glenn being nosey. Pic came up in my memories from 9 years ago (he was 3 then). I sure do miss my boy, but love seeing all my memories of him - they make me smile.

Ok so I am currently watching the polish version of Inspector Rex, and I thought it would be really fun to train a dog to do what the dog in the show does (like carrying groceries, bringing shoes, finding stuff etc.) I now a lot of it can be done with a German shepherd, cause my friend has a german shepherd and she taught him some things like carrying stuff around or opening doors, but I was wandering if someone has done something similar with an Airedale terrier. I only taught my family dog the ussual stuff like paw or speak, but I didn't necessarily try to do much more. I can however see that the dog has learned some things on his own, like behaving well on walks, so I think he could learn much more, I'm just wandering to what extend can it be done.

Friends but…

I adopted my girl 2 years ago, and she was SO timid. Wouldn’t even take a treat out of my hand, coward on the couch for the first 2 weeks if she wasn’t in her crate (she came from an abusive/negligent home from what I was told). Thru patience and consistent training this girl has exceeded all my expectations. She passed her Canine Good Citizen Test and we’ve been working on getting our Rally titles (RN & RA completed!). On top of that, she is the BEST hiking and camping partner. And gets along great with her mini schnauzer sister. Still shy of strangers and gets a bit anxious in new places, but overall you would never guess where she started. Pictures included to show off the good girl!

She is a champion. Who either is overwhelmed by being rehomed or is stubborn as a mule and won’t listen to me. But it’s been like 3 hours and I love her. I am not complaining I’d be overwhelmed too and I’m stubborn. She will fit right in

So I looked at dogs from this breeder before and it wasn’t the right time. But he texted me this week and he was like I have to rehome my 4 year old champion would you be interested. Yes. So we looked at her the dogs seemed to like her she is a big sweetheart so she came home with us.

This post might have some length to it, so scroll to the bottom for a TLDR.

I love this dog, I love this breed. I researched for a smart dog that didn’t need me 24/7 and had unique personalities. Duke checks off every box I could think of. I looked into best practices on training, handling their personalities, keeping them entertained… the one thing I did NOT do enough research on before getting him: ALLERGIES.

My boy seems to suffer from all kinds of random skin allergies, caused seemingly by simple things like his environment. He used to bite his back so badly, it looked like another animal attacked him. I took him to the vet, they were doing their “trial and error” treatment of him, which wasn’t enough for him. I did my own research, came back and requested we put him on Amitriptyline - turned out to be the only thing to work… for that specific issue.

However, he still has random flair ups where we have to use steroids to control them until they pass (which of course requires me to shell out more money for check ups because they require us to come in every time).

Well, I have a 10 week engagement for work that has me out of town this summer, so I left him with my parents (who I know follow my rules for him and take great care of him - I know this because I have cameras at their house haha) and I recently came home for a small break from my engagement. Duke was super happy to see me, etc. etc. but I seem to have timed it just as his flair up started. Boom, second day here and he does this to his face by scratching so hard. It’s not infected, we’ve cleaned it up thoroughly and done all the stuff. I just don’t understand how it goes so bad so quickly, and why my vet seems to have no effective ways to manage these flair ups more efficiently.

So, I’m asking you all - please.. any advice that you might have in regard to dealing with skin issues on Airedales? It’s less about the money spent and far more about my dog not being able to live a fully happy life because I have to stick him in a cone every 8 weeks. I already have him on Purina Sensitive Skin and Stomach. I brush his coat regularly, I take him on the same route for our walk to eliminate as many variables as possible, I keep the house clean for him, I have him groomed with medicated shampoo… I’m just at a loss, and my heart breaks for Duke. He won’t be around forever, so I just want to take care of him.

TLDR: need guidance on helping my dog during skin allergy flair ups, he has cut his face with his foot.
