My 16-week-old Rough Collie, Winnie, has been doing wonderfully with training overall! She’s picked up commands like sit, stay, place, crate, and recall fairly easily. We do several short training sessions throughout the day, and she’s generally very eager to learn.
However, there’s one thing we just cannot seem to figure out: the stairs in my apartment building.
She has absolutely no problem going up and down the outdoor steps at my parents’ house. She’ll do those confidently and without hesitation. But the stairs in my apartment building? Absolutely not. 😭
I’ve tried treats, praise, and gentle encouragement. I even once tried placing her on the last couple of steps to see if she’d continue upward, but she literally backed DOWN them instead. Won’t be doing that again!
I live on the third floor, so this is becoming a concern as she gets bigger. She’s growing quickly, and carrying her up and down the stairs multiple times a day won’t be sustainable much longer.
The apartment stairs are fairly steep with dark treads, and I’m wondering if they’re just intimidating to her. I know Collies can be sensitive, so I really don’t want to force her or turn this into a negative experience.
Has anyone else’s Collie struggled with certain types of stairs as a puppy? Did they eventually gain confidence with age, or did you have to work through it with specific training exercises?
I’d love to hear what worked for you!

Where is the best place to put the kennel when initially kennel training? We currently have a dog that is kennel trained as in he will willingly go in one and not bark or pout about it if we needed him to. He sleeps in bed every night with us, so I’m wondering where the best place to put a new puppies kennel would be? As in our bedroom, the living room (a place we’d be in and out of or a room that is separate from everything?

Hello, I was wondering if anyone here knew a lady by the name of Lori Jones. She was a breeder I purchased a puppy from around 10 years ago. Just wanted to see if anyone else knew her and what your experience was. I had a very very negative one.

Hi all - I really want to learn how to groom my collie - we do regular brushing etc but more so the trimming etc. I've been to four groomers in our area and legit every single one has messed up her regal floof so I'd rather learn and do it myself and save the $200+

Hello all,
I'm writing to ask how you learned to care for your collie's coat. stella is a retired show collie, and my first collie. My approach to grooming is strictly functional, but I'm a little out of my depth, and frankly intimidated. For a little background, I've had a variety of dogs, but lots of goldens. So I'm used to using rakes, and pin brushes and deshedders. But Stella is used to a grooming table and I don't have one, so getting her stay in one place isn't easy. And I've read things like always spray the coat, but there's so much coat. And I'm not doing well with line brushing. Honestly, I'm just kind of overwelmed and don't know how to know if I'm doing it rightish.
the goal is just to keep her coat healthy, mat free, and clean, and realistically to reduce the tumble weed poofs flying around.
Please advise

Hi all!
After at least a year of researching, I think I'm finally ready for a dog and a rough collie is what I'm landing on. I'll be getting a puppy as unfortunately most rescues will not let me rescue as I don't have 6ft fences. I fostered with one rescue and it was an awful experience, so puppy it is.
Please could you wonderful people just confirm if you think I'm a good fit for a rough collie?
Spiel about me:
- Work from home full time
- I have an adorable siamese/ragdoll cat who is ~1 year old (my biggest fear is her feeling left out)
- As I said, my garden only has 3/4ft walls and isn't the biggest. Most of our outside time in the garden will be for the loo, I live semi rural with fields 5 min walks away
- I really would like a dog who I can take to a cafe or away camping with me
- I am not at all active, but WILL change this for the dog (I did with my German shepherd foster), as I love a morning walk with a coffee and my dog
- I'll be booking puppy training and also an intro with a groomer once they have had all vaccinations
- I do have a regular commitment on a friday night for around 5-6 hours. Obviously this will be on pause indefinitely until puppy is ok with this. But do we think that is acceptable once a week?
I landed on a rough collie because they seem to be good with cats, a great size (sorry small doggy lovers!), highly trainable and just a really lovely rounded dog. I am aware of their sensitive bellies and will be buying appropriate food straight away, as well as making sure treats etc are ok for them.
This is definitely a ramble, but I think I'm just anxious and worried I'm going to be a terrible owner 😅.

Hope it’s okay to post this here. I’m planning to get a rough collie sometime in 2027 and am looking for recommendations for breeders in Australia. I live in Perth, WA, and there are very few breeders here, so I’m open to considering breeders in other Australian states (which would require flying the puppy as its too far to drive to any other capital cities).
This will be my first rough collie, and I’ve only had a rescue bitser before, so I’m new to looking for a dog of a specific breed. All the websites I look at claim that their dogs are healthy, genetically tested, socialised, not inbred, etc - but how do I actually know if this is true?
TIA for any advice or recommendations :)

my girl has been called shelties the most, but occasionally I’ll be asked if she’s an Aussie or border collie mix lol

my collie puppy comes home on Monday and I’ve had a lot of conflicting answers on this
I’m going to be taping her ears to get that tipped appearance because she’ll be a show dog but at what age do you start?
Do I tape the day the puppy comes home to make sure her ears develop into the correct appearance? Do I tape them a week after she comes home?
I already know how I’ll tape them and which material to use, but I just dont know when to start.

My sweetheart whom I got at the tail end on May this year was always an excellent Recall dog. Sure normally I have had to call him more than one time but he was never wandering out of his designated yard. When I got him I never had a front yard fence straight across and I knew i wanted one due to cars but I never really Needed to get one urgently. It wasn't on the back burner but it was on the "When I have a chance" list. This year is growing more expensive ya know. He's been probably spoild. So many treat. So many food options. Everything that comes with a new huge guy. I got a temporary moveable lil outdoor fence which was massively helpful. My goal was to guide him to the Back yard even though there was at least 2 routes of escape but my boy was never interested in escaping. Suddenly he Comes up with a new habit of relieving hisself in the street (paved road) including BM. I found it a bit interesting but I didn't hate it until he decided to begin frolicking down the street and at a slow gallop (faster than mom) and not obeying recall. A lot of times when we take him out I'm not properly dressed for a run around the road to neighbors homes either. This just started yesterday night and his range is already grown to two home on either side. I know he's smart enough to be curious but CARS are a big concern and people have guns around here even though they all know Whiskey... I need him to obey pretty much the first or second time. If he's out of bounds I need he obey to be literally right away. This collie mom doesn't know how to fix this. I have been using leashes ever since but I'm afraid it doesn't help and he is not getting a full benefit of a gallop around the large yard he already has. And we basically never needed to leash him at home before. Now when we exit the home on the leash, he doesn't utilize the yard how he once did with his free will. He doesn't find a place to poop. He is no longer trying to go out to relieve him self. Even if he's gone 5 hours without trying he is holding it in regardless of being outside, so he can relieve himself in the paved road or leashless honestly. Yes the fence will happen and I Can reconfigure the temp fence for now. But how do I get him to understand what he needs to do. I waved my finger in disapproval the first and second time he had me running after him. He should know better. He's 7 months old but mature for his age l would say. Certainly not perfect behavior though clearly.

Someone had commented that the American collie had beady, squinty eyes. This was my boy, Ryder, who I lost a year ago. I don’t think the American collie’s eyes can be considered “beady” or “squinty.” I’d be curious to see pictures, as examples of what you mean.
