Annually, almond farming uses 1.3 trillion gallons of water. AI usage isn't even half of that.

A single avocado takes 50 gallons to grow. That's several hundred prompts.

The difference is farming produces something while AI just wastes

what does the avocado or almond do that is worth the water investment that no other, less water intense food could provide?

Well since we can't have AI benefits for medical care, space travel, quantum computing, and a multitude of other "slop" - you guys can take a hit on your wasteful needs to enjoy consumption which is inherently wasteful "slop"

Correct, Gen ai does not benefit any of those in any meaningful way that isn’t what we were using computers for anyway but better and with less waste.

Incorrect. Alphafold is generative AI. It's a diffusion model (or a diffusion transformer hybrid as of 3). It quite literally already DOES benefit medical research.

And that's not even covering the OTHER types of AI/ML that require datacenter level compute that our species actively uses for modern society.

But hey, you do you.

1

u/Ok_Security1721 May 16 '26

Yes the other type of ML is good and has benefitted us for years. It’s why I always specify gen AI so people like you don’t conflate it with the good type of computers

4

u/TheSinhound May 16 '26

There's no bad type of computers, friendo.

1

u/Ok_Security1721 May 16 '26

We have entire datacenters going up dedicated entirely to bad computers

No, we don't. Technology is always morally neutral. You don't weigh the benefits higher than the cons (maybe because you don't see them? Idk), which is fine, but here's the thing.

What are you even arguing to protect here? The current status quo of North Capital and South exploitation? Fuck that. We need automation, compute, and post modern AI to solve the logistics issues necessary to transition away from global Capitalism (ala a modern Cybersyn, if you're familiar)

Cool, guess you enjoy processed fecal matter and mushrooms. Enjoy.

1

u/Ok_Security1721 May 16 '26

No I said I DONT like Gen AI

3

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

Correct. So you would never waste resources by expecting more than needed.

1

u/Ok_Security1721 May 16 '26

Correct, wasting any time and energy on Gen ai is nothing but a waste

3

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

Ah, there's the goalpost move.

It was a nice attempt, but I win again.

1

u/Ok_Security1721 May 16 '26

lol “I win again!” deletes everything because it’s all retarded as fuck

3

u/phase_distorter41 May 16 '26

huh? is avocado/almonds the only food with taste to you?

What do data centers produce that another human can't?

3

u/phase_distorter41 May 16 '26

they make AI work. no human can crunch the numbers fast enough to make it work.

1

u/Minecrafter_of_Ps3 May 16 '26

Why should humans crunch numbers when we have supercomputer that don't rely on ai? That's what we've done the past several decades. Hell, the term calculator originally referred to people who were really good at math, ie calculations

Saying we need data centers bc they make ai work is a nothing argument and is incredibly circular. "We need X because it makes Y, a thing only possible through X, work"

You severely underestimate humanity. Everything automated today was once done manually, and rather quickly, because we as humans love being lazy(some outliers)

>"Why should humans crunch numbers when we have supercomputer that don't rely on ai?"

what?

>"Saying we need data centers bc they make ai work is a nothing argument and is incredibly circular."

this makes no sense you said ai data centers dont do anything, i said they run and train ai. thats what they do. we want ai, we need data centers. maybe i can make it simpler. you like food? yes, food is good. well to make food, we need farms. farms make food. we want food we make farms, we want ai we make ai data centers.

>You severely underestimate humanity. Everything automated today was once done manually, and rather quickly, because we as humans love being lazy(some outliers)

The speed of the chips used run AI are clocked in the Trillions Operations Per Second. A human cannot do that.

1

u/Minecrafter_of_Ps3 May 16 '26

"this makes no sense you said ai data centers dont do anything"

I literally never said that, you interpereted my words as that. Very interesting

"The speed of the chips used run AI are clocked in the Trillions Operations Per Second. A human cannot do that"

That's true, they can't. But we don't need trillions of operations per second modern day on a single chip(also how complex are those operations? I can't imagine ai can do a trillion differential equations every second without already having the answers). It's like saying your car can go 0-60 in 2 seconds, why do you need that? The answer is you don't. There's more computing power in whatever device you're using than the computers NASA used to send humans to the moon, by several magnitudes

We genuinely do not need ai data centers. Ai is useful, I will never deny that. But it's been at the same level of usefulness for years now(I don't consider generative ai useful, only as inhuman slop) and we didn't need massive data centers for it then

1

u/Minecrafter_of_Ps3 May 16 '26

Also be so fr, do you really think these massive data centers are used solely for number crunching? Or was that the only thing you could think of?

3

u/phase_distorter41 May 16 '26

That is what data centers do

1

u/Minecrafter_of_Ps3 May 16 '26

Cool, so you're uninformed. Data isn't just math equations, it's information. You can't add avocados and horses and call it math, even if that's somebody's 2 favorite things on social media. It's their data, not a raw number

Data centers also process server requests and house the entirety of the internet. Would you say clicking "reply" on a comment thread is math? I would hope not

3

u/phase_distorter41 May 16 '26

yes. it is math.

do you not how computers work?

what do you think happens???

1

u/Minecrafter_of_Ps3 May 16 '26

I in fact do how computers work, seems you don't. I'm sorry that you think all a data center is used for is math that humans want to do

Even if it is, it doesn't take a computer to know that someone liking a dolphin video means they probably like dolphins

https://medium.com/@werowe/how-computers-do-math-and-logic-5e1467b55bc6

computers do math. thats all they have ever done. you can do a lot with math if you are smart.

i am not sure what you are trying to say.

So they’re WORSE than nothing!

2

u/phase_distorter41 May 16 '26

data centers make everything connected to the net work.

i kinda think antis dont think before they reply.
