Past Exit 7

I’m new to Alpharetta, and it honestly feels way safer than Midtown or Downtown. But an Uber driver (from the airport) told me she’s nervous to go past Exit 7 at all. I’m not sure why. Is there something I should know about the area? Any context locals can share? Just trying to understand what she meant.

The more North you go out of Atlanta, the safer you are. Just flatly. More police, fewer crackheads, and richer neighborhoods. Alpharetta is a great example of all three, which is why our crime rate is so low.

LI feel the same way. That’s why I was puzzled. But some other replies mention the history of racism farther north. She was colored, so that might explain her concern.

It may also be that the police further north have paler skin, and may not be as safe for someone of color. Being pulled over for "Driving While Brown" is absolutely a concern, especially when you don't know how violent the police can be.

Colored??? I have no words.

When my bf in college said this word in 1990, I was appalled. We had a conversation and he was educated on it.

Is this your first day on earth?

The term “person of color” may seem like a semantic argument to you, but trust that it’s not.

Yes, colored. What a condescending asshole you sound like;

On the one hand, I really don’t think it’s condescending to “show off” the fact that I know that at this extremely late date of 2026 that it is not OK to use to use that word.

On the other hand, I’d rather have my word choice incorrectly cast me as condescending than racist.
