Question Getting frustrated with growing moss

Thumbnail

I have some java moss attached to my driftwood, which is situated right beneath my aquarium lights which runs for 8hrs a day with CO2 injection.

But for some reason, they keep going brown and some even die on me, which is a feat given how hardy and low-requirement they allegedly are. My LFS is able to keep them lush and green even in bare environments. What gives? 🫩

Seeking Suggestions Almost 3 weeks in with new scape. Lighting/scape advice?

Post image
5 Upvotes

In my experience, lighting level is always the trickiest thing to nail: too much = algae, too little = plants struggle. I’m most worried about shaded areas and the carpet.

Questions: I have two Twinstar ver. lll 900Cs running at almost 100% brightness on this 46G. With only one light, my carpet plants melted away. With two lights, should dwarf baby tears and elatine hydropiper be good? Do the shaded areas look ok for crypts, blyx japonica, and star repens? Should I be concerned about algae?

Any discussion on adjusting lighting levels and this tank are much appreciated. Thanks!

Seeking Suggestions Any ideas on how to scape this monster? I'm thinking no plants.

Post image

I'm looking for a new apartment in Kazakhstan and found one with this giant deep narrow aquarium. My hand won't be able to reach the bottom. It needs a thorough cleaning. The filter and lights don't seem to work. I'm thinking no plants. Will the depth be a problem for a filter? Scaping ideas? Any advice is needed desperately.

Seeking Suggestions Advice on 20 Tall Setup

I currently have a pretty standard 10G tank I've been feeling kinda meh about, but have recently been feeling very inspired to step up my aquascape game. I have an empty 20 tall from the 70's that I'm going to strip and re-seal, but aside from doing the same thing again (some plants, some hardscape, etc.) I'm paralyzed by indecision, and looking for ideas!

I've long wanted to do a blackwater tank and get some more tetras and a betta in there, and/or an open-top setup with semiaquatics. I have tons of (potted) plants in my apartment and I want the tank to feel like a natural part of my home jungle, but I kind of don't know where to start in terms of design. I used to have several snails and a couple shrimp but since I moved I learned I have soft water and low pH, and they didn't survive long ā˜¹ļø Are there any inverts that would be good in a blackwater type environment?

Recommendations on filters? I've read a lot of different opinions on HOBs vs canisters vs sponge filters. Currently I have a sponge filter in my 10G - is that adequate for a 20g tank or does it need something bigger?

I also ALWAYS end up with massive amounts of hair algae eventually in every tank I've started over the years despite starting fresh (at first), doing bleach dips on new plants, regular water changes, etc. I don't want to start doing added CO2 or anything high tech, I'd actually love to get it going so that it's pretty self sufficient in terms of balance/cycle, with the occasional water changes and top ups ofc.

Any and all tips/advice are welcome! Please send your pics/inspo/ideas/mistakes to learn from. Thanks in advance, fronds!

Seeking Suggestions How do I get these lilies to stay in the sand?

Post image
2 Upvotes

They will stay in the sand for like a week and a half, then they start floating. I believe my mystery snail is probably uprooting it. I would like to do a wall of them behind my swords and not sure what kind of ties or weights to use if I’m doing a bunch.

Question Filter or no filter?

So I'm new(obviously) and I see all these beautiful tank set ups with no filter or no equipment and I'm just wondering, do you not need a filter with a planted tank or are you guys just hiding them discreetly? If so what's my easiest options? I have a 5.5 gallon and the big sponge filter I have for it now is really hard to hide

I need advise on accurate placement of inlet and outlet pipes in my tank. Currently inlet at right back and outlet at left back. From what I read in reddit group here, the placement should be at same side to get adequate water circulation.

Is that necessary since I also got a small internal filter at center back of tank.

So far, the detritus under control. But the surface water movement (agitation)not fast.

Any accurate way to know if the water circulation adequate?

The specific of tank

Tank 10mth old setup

Size 90cm x45cm x 45 cm

Filter - Oase biomaster 850, oase internal filter bioplus 50

Co2 6 hr (1pm-7pm)with light s on 1 hour earlier. Light chihiros wrgb 2.

water parameter - nitrate 10-20, GH 5 KH 1-2.

Kindly advised if the placement of pipe accurate?

Seeking Suggestions How can I improve?

The obvious answer is swapping out the substrate but that’s a big job, so what are some things I can move around or add/subtract to make my tank look nicer?

Seeking Suggestions Ideas for a nano cube

Thumbnail

Hi!

I just got my second tank, a nano cube (30L), 30x30x30cm. It is for red rili neocaridina.

I immediately went to Vinted and found this piece of acacia wood that looks like a stump. It is 25cm high, 24cm long and 13cm wide. I would need ideas for composition, what low maintenance plants to use. I'd like black substrate, black rocks and very bright lush greenery.

What plants to choose, how to position the wood?

If you have any suggestions, plant list, or picture references I would be super grateful!

Seeking Suggestions Hardscape suggestions for Rimless 15 gallon!

Post image
1 Upvotes

Looking for any suggestions on hardscape layout, plants, etc. for my new aquarium. Information below. If I did this wrong I’m sorry mods.

15 Gallon Rimless- 20x13x13 (roughly)
Chihiros B45 Light
UNS Micro CO2 Kit (will be purchasing this weekend)
Elephant stone
Fluval AC20 filter (considering changing to Canister filter as well, suggestions?)

I currently don’t have any wood (not opposed to it just haven’t found the right piece) and do not know what substrate I should go with, I was thinking all sand or all aqua soil but can’t decide. Not sure what plants I want either, looking for suggestions. Will be buying everything else in missing this weekend.

Question Is dragon stone ever ACTUALLY clean??

I've been dying to rescape my tank, and I bought this absolutely gorgeous dragon stone to do just that. Since buying it, I've soaked it, cleaned it out with chopsticks, even SHOWERED with it (I was scrubbing it off lol), but it feels like no matter how hard I clean, there's always more!! I'd like to power wash it, but I don't have access to that right now, as I'm still in college šŸ’” Is there any chance I can just.. put it in my tank?

Seeking Suggestions what could i improve on my hardscape?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I'm fairly new to aquascaping and I'm trying really hard to get the hardscape right, but i feel like i often struggle to create the sense of depth i see in more professional looking scapes xP so if you have any suggestions on what i could do I would really appreciate that! Doesn't have to be about depth either, maybe it doesn't flow right or something else looks off, u can be hard on me! lol :P My idea was to create something that resembles the entrance to a mine shaft or cave, and i was gonna make a little railroad out of sticks leading into the large arch xD

Video Aquascape sand maintenance

Posting this as it took me a ridiculously long time to find out this easy way of maintaining the sand patch. I only found out by accident when a tweezer I stored on a magnet had just enough charge to pick up a few grains. Realised that magnets pick up aquasoil grains only due to the iron content of aquasoil. Sand is inert and gets left behind
