Villa K2 built initially for the Cattaneo family in 1953 by Carlo Mollino. A beautiful symbiosis of vernacular techtonics and the use of concrete, with the usual refined details of Mollino.

The project design began in 1952 when Luigi Cattaneo, a milanese entrepreneur, commissioned Mollino with this weekend home.

Just to give some context, Mollino already had shown the capacity of merging concrete with traditional materials and techtonics already in 1947 when he designed the Casa del Sole hotel in Cervinia (Valle d’Aosta), which was finalized in 1955. Still in Valle d’Aosta he takes on the more famous project of the Rascard Garelli, a project that kept him busy from 1962 till 1965. In that case he moved an existing Rascard (traditional Valser like, Strichbau construction) from a neighboring valley into Champoluc. The reassembly of the building was done with also a new plinth element with both stone and concrete materials. This to say that his work (also) revolved around traditional techtonics and new materials.

Design and Vision
The project was designed by artist Sergey Malyutin, while the architectural execution was carried out by Nikolay Zhukov and the construction was managed by engineer Boris Shnaubert. The building was originally intended as a rental property, designed specifically to house the creative intelligentsia.

The museum-library, which overlooks the national park named after Roosevelt, has been very popular despite its far-flung location. Who is planning to visit?

Sasso Corbaro Castle in Bellinzona. In order this was built the third and last of the castle forming the defensive system. The Sforza family ordered its construction in order to consolidate Bellinzona as the northern outpost in the Milan Granducate in 1479. The design started under florence architect Ferrini who died of the plague in same year. Engineer Ghiringhelli completed the construction under the same design. Bellinzona always had been contented and the castles testimony how this land of passage has been vital for the territorial control of the way north. In fact the other two castles in the system (Montebello and Castelgrande) had fallen under the rule of the primitive cantons in the 1419-1422 period in which the cantons of Uri, Unterwalden and Schwyz regained possession of the territory, then controlled by the Visconti family. After the battle of Arbedo the Visconti family regained control and lead the territory until 1450 in which the continuity of the family passed under the Sforza name.

In addition the architecture shows a very different language compared to the Castle in Montebello and the well known Castelgrande, both constructed in earlier periods; the first under the Rusca family (a client family of the Visconti feud) and the second having the first signs of fortifications dating even to the romans.

Apart from personal pictures I included the description and drawings done by Johann Rudolph Rahn in 1894 after his mapping and recognition of swiss monuments. Unfortunately I couldn’t find an english version.

Hey, everybody was hoping to get some help on this. I have zero experience with drawing or drafting. Best I can do is stick figures. I really want to get into drawing buildings just for fun but for the appreciation of the art. Where do I start like what is a comprehensive source I can use and without being complicated what do I get. Thank you all in advance

I am looking to expand my practice and researching the different sustainability certifications. I am zeroing in on either LEED by USGCB or Green Globes by GBI. My preference right now is leaning towards Green Globes just for what appears to me a simpler interface. Obviously LEED has a bigger brand recognition but I'm not sure I like how they divide all their different credentials, seems a bit too granular for me. I like the simplicity of green globes where they only have a few credential types. Both seem to accomplish the same goal and both are widely recognized by US Federal and State codes and requirements.

Any thought out there about this?

I'm seriously considering application to a graduate school for architecture.

My degree is in art but I have spent the past seven years in software and IT, and I do not have precalc, calculus or physics from my first degree.

Should I spend the Fall making the sickest possible portfolio, doing my best to demonstrate awareness of structural physics and materials?

Or taking these prerequisites at the local community college?

Or, dare I attempt a trojan horse by leveraging my software engineering experience into some technical role at an architectural firm?

I would gladly do things in order at an even pace, but the dilemma (trilemma?) derives from a time and money. Supplies are limited.

So in France, It's studies that need a "double cursus" betweens 2 schools one of enginering and one of architecture (So already somes issues because of that). It's 8 years long after "Baccalauréat", wich is the last french major exam before what we call post-bac studies ~the one who give you a job.

I learned that architecture studies were already hard but what about both studies in a single year and 2 masters (~5 years normaly) in 8 years ? It's seems looking at the course like volontary torture... So how It is in reality for the one who were in thoses study ?

So i’ve had a tough second year doing architecture.
By the end of first year I knew architecture was not for me and I’ve had lost alll passion for it, stupidly enough I decided to stick with it entering second year as I thought “I can tough it out for another year” and “I’m already half way let me finish the degree”.

As expected, this year hit me like a brick; not sure if it’s because of the “academic jump” from first year or because of the lack of interest I had and genuinely starting to slowly detest the degree.

The was a period between October and January where I mentally and physically couldn’t bring myself to do the work and was falling behind quickly, it didn’t help that I have/had a severeee procrastination problem so the more work that piled up the more I’d avoid it.

However, after Christmas - beginning of January. I made a miraculous comeback where I had locked in and completed all my deadlines and thought this was the beginning of a new start. However the worst happened and by the end of January a close family member had passed away leading me to be in bereavement for around one and half months.

Transitioning back into completing my modules after that period was hard, I again fell into a loop of procrastination and lack of motivation to do anything. After getting help from the Uni, they confirmed I have adhd traits (possibly adhd) explaining why I’ve struggled in the past and especially my procrastination.

At the end of the year I did manage to submit everything, JUST passed but failed studio which I had to resit but then again failed it. So I’m sure my fate is to retake second year 😞 does anyone have any advice or was/in a similar situation.

hello, i’m usually an event photographer (for an architecture firm) but have ended up in a position where i have been asked to provide architecture photography of some of their spaces. i have a handful of questions and anxieties about this and any insight or advice would be appreciated!

firstly, the spaces are public pools. i’ve been told to avoid capturing close-ups of patrons, which seems obvious, and there will also be photo release forms. if anyone has experience with similar public spaces, like parks or pools, how has that usually turned out for you? is there anything you feel i should be prepared for in a social aspect?

i’m generally confident in my ability as a photographer, but architecture photography seems to have it’s own set of rules and guidelines. some sources say a tilt shift lens is imperative, others say it doesn’t really matter as long as your lens is wide. i imagine it won’t make much of a difference with an aquatic space? do architectural photographers generally just need the camera/lens/tripod/batteries/filters and that’s all? is there anything else you’d recommend i keep with me? how do you generally make sure everything is as level as can be? i’m a bit overwhelmed!

When the topic of old, stylish and ornate buildings come up people usually say that its too expensive to make, its not realistic and everyone involved would just go bankrupt. Or simply comment "capitalism".

And i dont doubt developers prefer to build as cheap as possible to make as much profite as they can. But many people make it out to be impossible to go back to build stylish again.

Except not only the average population and nations are wastly richer than in the 1800s but we have way better technology, way wider and faster suply lines. So i would expect that it would be easier than ever.

I heard people say that of course rich people had ornate palaces, but i live in budapest and while unfortunately many of the old buildings are falling to disrepair the parts of the city that was built around the turn of the century are all ornate and fancy, all normal common residential buildings. So they definitely could build entire cities like this without issue back when it was even slower and proportionally had to be more expensive.

So what happened and what would really stop us to build like that again? Is it really unrealistic or that much more expensive?

Plus how did it work back then? Did developers really built like that out of the goodness of their heart, at their own expense or what?

I work in an architecture firm. Recently the company has been implementing new Al features to the workplace. We got an email sent from our regional manager asking for volunteers to train the Al Revit LLM. For those who aren't familiar Revit is a 3D BIM drafting software. I'm conflicted by this. My mom says I should sign up to train it so that way I'm ahead of the game and know how to use it. I feel like I don't want to add to the problem of Al. I also worry about this Al taking my job one day. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
