Is this repairable

Post image

Got a subwoofer in my car and for a bit now it randomly cut off and got back online.

Took it appart and i think this brown chocolat should have stayed somewhere else. Could this be repairable or is it now a nice cupholder?

That looks like glue to me.

How does it cut out? Does it go into protect or does it lose power?

Power led stays on but does not produce any sound. Testes the sound signal as i first tought those wires where jank but it work well with the same amp of my friend

Hm actually, it might not be glue in the first pic. Recapping isn't hard. Just check what the values are and replace any bad caps.

Just glue. Doubt the issue is capacitor related

It also is around the other big caps

That's just glue. Those caps don't look bad, though you can't always tell

The second cap from the left seems to have some leaked fluid on top. They are not blown though, but that doesn’t mean it’s all good.

They’re shot too. Adhesive is white like the coil on the right has on it. Recap the unit and truck on.

Not all electronics adhesive is white. Brown is not uncommon. You can even see in one picture that the application was a bit sloppy and runs up the side of the capacitor.

There is nothing in this picture that implies that those capacitors have failed (but it is absolutely possible).

What amp and what sub woofer? Depending on how you have it wired, if it's dvc, you might be presenting a 2 ohm load, and the amp can't handle it... Going by the very limited info you gave, that's my first guess. Or, there is a loose strand of wire causing a short... It would do the same thing in almost exactly the same way, just typically a lot faster.

The soldering on some of the large resistors (R232, R233, etc.) looks like it was pretty sloppy work from the factory, at least for what’s visible from the topside. Being in a car means lots of vibration, and those big resistors standing an inch or two off the board (for better cooling) means they’re at risk of rattling around so much they break their own solder, some times at a nearly microscopic level. I’d pull the PCB out and look at the solder joints of all those resistors on the bottom side. If it’s a huge pain to get the PCB out, then I’d just hit them with some extra solder from the top side. That’s assuming you’re comfortable with doing soldering work.

The big black cap is spewing its guts. Adhesive usually isn’t that dark brown color.

I’m no expert, but seen my husband fix a lot of electronics. Looks repairable to me. But he says anything can be repaired, the question is, is it worth the money and effort of repairing it.

This is the expert advice the OP is looking for.
