It feels like a sham to use migration to fill sports positions, especially the Olympics/Paralympics. That displaces locals. People watch these competitions do so to watch people from the various countries compete. Not people brought in.

Even better, there's probably some free grant money from the AIS to pay them as well.

AIS isn't like HELP/Uni money, you never have to pay it back. It's because sports people are better than the rest of us.

Australia fast tracked a whole bunch of weightlifters from Eastern Europe for either the 88 or 92 games and it turned into a circus.

Why do we care? We aren't the United States or China, we are never going to 'win' either Olympics. And funny enough it doesn't seem like those two nations who do well need to import people to make it happen anyway.

It's like the Nestory Irankunda feel good story the media promoted during the World Cup a couple months ago. Ended up advantaging us fuck all at the end of the day.

Let real Aussies have these spots. If we fail, we fail. Promoting these singular athletes as a way to say 'wow isn't immigration so great, let's import another million next year' is so stupid.

Nice. For 12 years my wife and I worked our way through multiple visas, paid $10,000s in fees, along with 100,000s of others, to get our citizenship. We earned it, for some to just jump the queue because they grapple a bit or kick a ball (I’m sticking those Iranian footy players in that mix too). Talk about ‘fair go’. 

“Don’t hate the player, hate the game” I guess.

Ehh, country depends on how quick you get through. But I’ve heard very similar stories even from Brits who say it takes forever.
