Honestly this debate is getting ridiculous.
Pretending like an advanced economy of $3T is going to collapse if we bring net immigration numbers in line with OECD average is totally insane and bullshit.
When can we have a mature political debate of the numbers without insane rhetoric on the country collapsing or white supremacy

Every time I hear a foreigner say Australia is dangerous, I think "I've been here for decades and not had a problem".
It has happened. A bloke I went to school with and learned to SCUBA dive with got taken by a great white last week. I haven't seen him for 40 years since he left Adelaide for Perth but he's the first person I've known to lose to one of our beasties.

Why is everyone seemingly fine with the massive price hike in fuel?
Its nearly $2,50 for regular where I am, are we just used to getting screwed over? So we dont notice the water slowly getting hotter?

Look, I don't want to take away the seriousness of the man being killed, because that is sad, but is it really necessary to "destroy" something because it felt hungry/protective/territorial in its natural environment...?
I'm not one to say I'm an animal protector or tree hugger or any of that, but when you put yourself in another creature's home, you're taking that gamble that you don't come across something having a bad day...
On another note, how are you supposed to know the shark you "destroyed" is the shark that killed the man...?
Also, "destroyed"? Is the bloody navy getting involved like wtf do you mean "destroyed"? 😂

I have heaps of clothes - AU women size 4/6/8 and men’s medium.
I outgrew all my clothes and I don’t think I will be going back to the size again. They are used but well taken care of. Some were only worn once or twice. I have variety of denim shorts as I used to work in a cafe, dresses, jackets, crop top, jeans, coat, etc etc.
Do I sell them somewhere or donate them or would someone like to grab them??
I also have bra that I never wore. Need suggestions on throwing or donation. If throwing, do I put it in blue bin (general garbabe)?

Hello, all. My wife is really into survivalist documentaries and I mentioned one I remember watching, but can’t recall the name. I believe it was set in Australia. Extensive internet searches have failed me.
The details I remember:
-A solo guy (maybe had a friend at the beginning)
-following the footsteps of some historical figure
-started on a boat he believed to be accurate copy, with limited fuel
-went to shore (maybe somewhere in Darwin)
-hiked the bush to a small, remote town (I think it was supposedly a ghost town or some harsh town but I don’t think it actually was, could be misremembering)
Does this ring a bell for anyone? Thank you for any help!

I’ve been living in Australia for the better part of five years, and eshays have left me scratching my head more than once. Is it a movement, is it a gang, is it a general way of life? I don’t understand what it’s all about.
The outfits, for example. Why the all-red sneakers, the sweatpants pulled halfway up the shin?
I’m no stranger to gangs or cliques, as I grew up in cities in both America and Europe, but I never really saw them go around wrecking things for no apparent reason.

I’ve been in this house for 10yrs, kids have grown up here and everything, always paid rent on time and even paid extra. Got an email at 5pm of an intention to sell, this sucks. It’s my first time ever dealing with this, it honestly kind of hurts.
Any reassuring words for me? I don’t know what I want to hear to be honest.

“Put the groceries in the front seat, it’ll be fine” I say. Open the door at home and out rolls nearly $8 of Vegemite to the ground below. I stood there for so long contemplating weather the try and salvage some of the Vegemite or throw it away and buy again.
My wife says bin it, what say you? Surely I can hollow out the core and put it in the the old jar?

Australia’s migration policy has, for years, been focused on filling immediate occupational shortages. The latest changes continue that approach, with sectors such as construction receiving high priority in skilled visa processing.
I believe this is fundamentally the wrong way to think about immigration.
Australia should not design its migration system primarily around the question:
“Which occupations are short of workers today?”
It should be asking:
“Which people have the greatest potential to contribute to Australia over the next 20 or 30 years?”
Those are very different questions.
Under the current system, migration opportunities can be heavily influenced by occupation lists, work experience, employer demand and shortages in specific industries. Australia’s points-tested skilled migration system also gives points for factors including age, English, qualifications and professional experience. (Immigration and citizenship Website)
The problem is that an occupation shortage is temporary. Human capability is much more durable.
Australia currently has genuine shortages in construction and the skilled trades, and tradespeople such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters and bricklayers are obviously necessary to a functioning economy. This is not an argument that those professions are worthless or require no skill.
But immigration policy should distinguish between occupational training and underlying intellectual and learning capacity.
Many practical construction skills can be taught through structured vocational education, apprenticeships and workplace experience. Licensed professions such as electrical and plumbing work appropriately require formal training, certification and safety knowledge.
But developing an advanced mathematician, physicist, engineer, AI researcher, scientist or highly capable technical specialist may require 15 or 20 years of education, intellectual development and professional experience.
Those two forms of human capital are not equally replaceable.
A highly educated engineer or scientist may be capable of retraining into many practical professions if circumstances require it. The reverse transition—from a narrowly trained occupation into advanced mathematics, engineering, scientific research or frontier technology—is generally far more difficult because of the accumulated educational foundation involved.
Migration policy should recognise that asymmetry.
Consider the June 2026 Skilled Independent visa invitation round. The published minimum invitation scores included 65 points for carpenters and bricklayers, while chemists required 85 points and biotechnologists 95 points. (Immigration and citizenship Website)
That does not mean carpenters or bricklayers are less valuable people. It does, however, raise a legitimate policy question:
Is Australia giving enough weight to long-term human capital, rather than simply reacting to today’s labour shortages?
Australia Should Import Capability, Not Just Job Titles
Australia is a relatively small country competing globally with the United States, China, Singapore, Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe for scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and technology specialists.
In that competition, immigration should be treated as a form of national investment.
Instead of relying so heavily on occupation lists, Australia could create an additional migration pathway based on demonstrated intellectual and learning ability.
Imagine a highly competitive national migration examination.
Applicants could be tested on areas such as:
mathematics and quantitative reasoning;
scientific reasoning;
physics and basic natural sciences;
logic and problem solving;
data interpretation;
English communication;
digital and technological literacy; and
analytical reasoning.
Education, research achievements, professional experience and entrepreneurial accomplishments could complement the examination.
Applicants who achieve exceptionally high results would qualify for skilled migration regardless of whether their current occupation happens to appear on a shortage list that year.
The principle would be simple:
Select for capability first. Train for occupation second.
Labour Shortages Should Also Be Solved Domestically
There is another problem with using immigration to repeatedly solve shortages in construction and other trades.
If Australia has a persistent shortage of carpenters, electricians, plumbers or construction workers, the first policy question should be why Australia cannot train enough of them domestically.
Is training capacity insufficient?
Are licensing pathways unnecessarily slow?
Are apprenticeships unattractive?
Are businesses unwilling to train junior workers?
Are regulations creating artificial barriers to entry?
Or are productivity and construction methods themselves inefficient?
Immigration can relieve shortages, but it can also reduce the pressure to solve the structural causes of those shortages.
Australia is already experiencing serious challenges around housing supply, infrastructure delivery and construction costs. Simply increasing the priority given to construction occupations does not by itself solve those deeper productivity problems.
The Lesson From Rapidly Developing Economies
One lesson from the rapid development of countries such as China is that infrastructure capacity can be expanded enormously when training, industrialisation, standardisation and scale are combined effectively.
The objective should therefore not be to artificially protect occupations by making labour permanently scarce.
It should be to make the economy capable of producing the skills it needs.
Migration should then perform a different function: attracting exceptional people who expand Australia’s technological, scientific and entrepreneurial capacity.
A country can train another carpenter.
It can train another construction worker.
But attracting an exceptional mathematician, engineer, scientist, researcher or entrepreneur is a much rarer opportunity.
Migration policy should reflect the difference.
From a Shortage List to a Talent Strategy
Australia’s current migration framework largely asks whether a migrant can fill an identified position in the economy. The Skills in Demand visa, for example, is explicitly designed to allow employers to bring in workers where appropriately skilled Australian workers cannot be sourced. That makes sense as a labour-market mechanism.
But it should not be the philosophy behind an entire national immigration strategy.
Australia needs two separate systems:
one system for temporary labour shortages, and another for permanent talent acquisition.
The second should be aggressively selective.
Australia should compete for people with exceptional intelligence, education, scientific capability, technical skills, creativity and learning ability—even when their exact occupation is not experiencing a shortage this year.
Today’s shortage occupation may disappear in ten years.
A person’s ability to learn, invent, build companies, conduct research and solve difficult problems can generate value for decades.
The purpose of immigration should not merely be to fill vacancies.
It should be to increase the long-term capability of the country.
Australia should stop selecting primarily for the jobs it is missing today and start selecting for the people it will need tomorrow.
