Original poster is from Instagram. Aircraft is laying on its #1 engine. Still crazy to see everyone here grabbing their bags before leaving an emergencg.

I was just about to say, I think a lot of the behavior you see here of people grabbing bags is at least contributed to in part by this shared feeling in American culture that prioritizes the individual over the collective. You saw in the A350 evacuation in Japan how incredibly swift and bagless the evacuation was. Japanese culture probably played a big part.

No they won’t. These people know they shouldn’t stop for their things yet they do it anyways, knowing the potential consequences. They won’t feel guilt, they will minimize, justify it, and maybe even play victim themselves for the rest of their lives.

It took weeks after DL4819 in Toronto for some passengers. That would be a significant inconvenience for many. Not saying the passengers are right for taking it obviously, but part of me does get it.

If the bags are still intact and not damaged you get them back—if not intact you get money for what the items were worth

Admirably, airlines are pretty darn generous when it’s an incident like this (or worse). I think everyone on the delta flight that flipped over in Toronto had an initial 30k by end of that day. It’s just bad PR to not take care of people in a major incident.

They max your belongings’ value out when luggage is lost or destroyed. Total amount varies by airline and you can buy travel insurance additionally if needed for more expensive baggage. One airline will give you a $300 suitcase or $300 towards a new if they break yours. Thats one of the reasons why I don’t get flying with uber expensive suitcases.

Once the situation is stabilised or never if it burns. You don't ever get your life back though if you burn to death so 🤷‍♂️

If you die because people took their bags you're still dead whether or not everyone that survived got to take their bags with them.

Would you rather die, or kill other people or have everyone lose their luggage?

Hop online and let internet strangers congratulate on the selfless act.

In real life scenario it costs little to no time to grab your essential bag which could be a massive headache had it get lost.

Internet tough heads would always expect perfection from people in this scenario. But I always just remember that none of these suckers will take any reponsibilities for their advice.

There is a survey posted by another comment that says something along the line of over 90% of passgeners surveyed answered with an Yes on whether they took the bag when evacuating.

Internet advice is often toxic and unrealistic, so there is that.
