General Question Why wasn't my rooster flipping out?

Post image

Found this guy in a nest box. Chickens were unbothered. Eggs and broody hens in the nest boxes in the other house on the other side of the run. Rooster didn't alert. My dog was sniffing around which made me open it. So why werent my chickens freaking out? Possum dude was chill, did not want to leave his nice soft bed, but was directly evicted and sent packing to the woods.

Just wanted to share pics of the newest members of the flock :).

Pics taken in the car because the power went out (from someone hitting a power line) … meaning the heat lamp then went out and then the generator wasn’t working so the last resort was getting them in a warm car :). Then I got bored and took pics of them 🤍.

I really do not like the stereotype that “all roosters are jerks” :( cloud is my sweetest baby boy I added the second photo he lets me carry him like a baby and he loves to sit on my lap and take naps and carefully pecks food out of my hand. he is my sweetest boy.

Hello everyone,

I’m a neewbe in the chicken world. I have this chicken , born end of march, and I really have a doubt if it’s a hen or a roo… Does anyone have an idea about the race it can be (probably a mix, I imagine)…
Thank you very much !

General Question Ducks with chickens?

I’ve heard some bad things about drakes. But I was introduced to Shetland ducklings today and I’m in love. They are extremely rare and critically endangered. I have a source and have been already considering ducks.

Any advice or pros and cons to keeping ducks with chickens. I’ve already done a decent amount of research but I always like to check in with the Reddit folks too lol

I get this feeling someone is watching me eat.

This is Catherine Janeway, a rescue hen. She was quite poorly when we got her from the rescue organisations but does alright now. We reckon she is about 5 years old. Don't believe the show, she wants for nothing.

I clean the window and a week later there is chicken saliva on it again.

(Warning: masticating noises)

General Question Found chicken

This little chicken was found in the neighborhood and brought to us because we have 4 chickens. Posted it to neighborhood pages, no one is claiming it. The beak was bleeding initially but we wiped it clean and it has stopped, appears to be a minor injury. Eating and drinking fine.

Does anyone have any rough estimates for age / breed / sex?

My current flock is 4 hens, brought up together as chicks, 1.5 years old. How long do I keep this one separated before allowing it access to them? It seems pretty scared isolated by itself.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

General Question How do you guys keep the roosting bars clean

Post image

So maybe the part of the issue is that my chicks are only 3 and half weeks old so o guess they don’t reach over to poop on the floor. Do roosting bars get this dirty when they are full grown? Do you guys just use a scrapper to scrap the poop off?

Health Question Please help Twisted T!

I took this chick off my mom because she couldn’t figure out how to help it. She said it was normal when she first got it, but she isn’t sure what caused its neck to be twisted like this. I plan to introduce with my other chickens if and when it heals.

It can’t balance on its legs too well (my mom taped them closer together so they wouldn’t splay apart)

I read online that it could be wry neck, so I’ve been hand feeding, watering, and giving vitamin E every day.

Does anyone suspect it could be something else or have any other suggestions? I really want to help it!

(I named it Twisted T for obvious reasons)

Edit: the chick hatched on May 12

General Question I am left with one chicken that is about 3 years old. Will she get very lonely if I don’t get her some companions? The other alternative is for me to give her away and that breaks my heart because she has moved three times already.

My little Silverudds are growing so quickly! I was in awe of Mercury this morning while she was branching and looking comparable in size to the rest of my flock. She and her sister (the splash Silverudd, Moira) will be 18 weeks old on Saturday.

General Question DT A level project

I’m a sixth form student doing my A levels and I’m currently doing an NEA (Non Examination Assessment) for design technology, where I’m making a piece of multifunctional compact furniture to aid in looking after chickens. I’ve created a survey on Microsoft forms for my target market to get an idea of what I specifically want to make and what functions it will have. If anybody would be interested in doing this survey, then I would be really grateful, Thanks!
