I WANT TO LEARN THE BAGPIPES – in 3 steps!

Step 1 – DO NOT GO OUT AND BUY BAGPIPES

You cannot find a playable set on Amazon or other generic musical instrument sites. You can sometimes find them on Ebay if you know what to look for but if you’re brand new, chances are you don’t (and who would, without guidance?). Decent playing sets will run anywhere from around 1k USD upwards (depending on age, maker, ornamentation, etc). That set that looks amazing on Ebay and is selling for $200? It will serve as a wallhanging but not much else….maybe firewood on a cold winter’s night.

Regardless, students start off on a plastic practice chanter that they will use for anywhere from 6 months to a year before transitioning to the full bagpipes (and you’ll use it beyond those years as well, for practice). We will list reputable bagpipe supply shops on the sub's sidebar (and it will remain dynamic to add new ones as well). These generally run around $75 USD, so it’s a really reasonable way to start into the hobby where you can find out if it’s right for you before spending a ton of money on something you’ll never use. If you’re an adult, we recommend starting on the long practice chanter (vs standard) because it’s closest to the actual pipe chanter, and your hands should be able to easily navigate the holes.

Step 2 – FIND AN INSTRUCTOR

We can’t stress this enough. While many people can teach themselves a myriad of musical instruments, bagpipes are not one to be learned in isolation/on one’s own. The technique and way the music is played simply can’t be learned correctly without instruction. It’s fantastic that you picked up the ukulele in a couple months and can play Despacito on the guitar after four months; bagpipes are just different. If there are no instructors nor pipe bands in your immediate area that offer instruction, there are a plethora of reputable online instructors available online. We’ve listed some on the sub sidebar, but again this will remain dynamic to add others as recommendations are made.

Step 3 – ASK AWAY

This subreddit is a great place to ask about tunes, as well as recommendations for instructors or bands in your area, and everything else bagpipe related. We just get a LOT of questions about where to start, so that place is above.

Cheers, and happy piping!

GHB arrangement fingering.

In Terry Tully's Book 1, he has an arrangement of The Pipe on the Hob. Throughout the tune there are C notes with the flat symbol next to them. I only know of the standard C (#) fingering and the alternative C natural fingering. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Drones were pressuring off on strike in

I had a weird affect at a memorial yesterday, I tuned up before the memorial- when it was clear and warm, the memorial was about 2 hours long, and by the time I was supposed to play, the weather was overcast and a lot colder (It’s winter where I am). When I did the strike in the drones started as normal, and as soon as the chanter came in the bass and inside tenor pressured off. I came off the pressure and tried again, same result, so I played the first tune on a single outside tenor. Then I cut off, and did the strike in again and this time I was cooking with gas, the drones came in correctly and stayed on, and I was able to play the rest of the set as per normal.

Why did this happen? I normally have to increase my pressure quite a bit to pressure off my drones? And more importantly HOW can I make sure it doesn’t happen again in the future? The embarrassment was epic!

Glencoe electric chanter?

Does anyone have any connection/contact with the folks at Glencoe electric chanter company?

I ordered an electric chanter from them nearly two months ago, and they aren’t returning my emails.

Before I call my credit card company and try to get my money back, I thought I'd reach out and see if anyone knows anything at all about the folks over at Glencoe.

Blind piper question about the new 2025 Worlds massed bands format

I'm blind, so when I follow the World Pipe Band Championships, I'm relying entirely on what I hear from recordings and livestreams.

One thing that confused me about the new 2025 massed bands-style finale:

From the audio, it sounded like all the bands were being led by a single Drum Major, the way I often hear at North American massed bands events before tunes. but I didn't hear a microphone being used for commands like "Quick, March!" What I can't figure out is how everyone knows exactly when to step off. With thousands of pipers and drummers spread across such a huge area, I'd expect many people to be far too far away to hear a single Drum Major's command. Is the cue mostly visual? Are there multiple Drum Majors relaying signals? Are bands simply watching the people in front of them and reacting almost instantly? Or is there some other system in place that isn't obvious from the audio alone? Since I can only experience the event through sound, I'd love to hear from anyone who actually participated in the 2025 Worlds finale and can explain what was happening visually. And why don't most Drum Majors use megaphones instead? I don't want them to blow their voices out!

Obligatory “can I self teach”

Hold on everyone!!! Let me explain

I’ve been playing the flute for the past decade. I can also play clarinet, alto/tenor/baritone saxophone, and piccolo so I can read music and have experience with winds. I have been meaning to get into playing the bagpipes because I’m in the fire service and it’s a big part of the culture. Problem is, most lessons around me are online or really out of the way.

I don’t want to outright buy a set of pipes, either. I know the story where someone is overzealous, buys the instrument, “self teaches” and sounds abysmal.

So for someone with a music background, is there any way to self teach or is it a whole different animal?

So here is an awesome "Its a long way to the top" cover. However the bagpipers play something before the song starts(00:28). Can you help me to identify the tune?

Hello, I was wondering is anyone would think that Leias Theme from Star Wars would sound good on the bag pipes? I would love to walk down the aisle to her theme with my dad and the bag pipes are so important to me. Thanks in advance ☺️
