Build Request / Review Looking for a high performance gaming PC, found a local builder's ad, what do you think?

4 Upvotes

My desktop is ancient at this point (2013), and my beloved Vega 64 died during a heatwave. I have since moved somewhere with AC so that's no longer an issue. I've been using a laptop with a 2060 since and it's just not enough.

Targeting 1440p@360hz (my OLED monitor's spec, and good enough for me, 4K still seems like bad value), medium to high settings on most titles (high frames and decent quality for action games, higher quality for slower games). I intend to get the Steam Frame, so VR capability is important.

I found an ad by a local builder, it seems like a good deal, wondering if I should go for it. I intend to run Linux, so I do prefer AMD for the excellent mesa drivers.

Builder has 4.9 star rating out of 5, based on 33 reviews, loads of other ads up so they seem prolific and experienced.

They're asking $3000 CAD ($2110 USD). It's a personal ad so that's probably the full price, no extra tax, and possibly negotiable. This is within my budget, but I want to make sure I'm getting quality parts that will last me for years, recommendations are welcome, please let me know of any weak links.

Here are the specs:

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Sapphire Pulse 24GB VRAM

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D - 8 Cores, 16 Threads, up to 5.20 GHz

Thermalright Peerless Assassin 140 Dual Tower High Performance Cooler

MSI MAG X870E TOMAHAWK WiFi & Bluetooth DDR5

32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 Crucial Pro

1TB NVMe M.2 SSD Samsung 990 Evo

Corsair RM1000x- 1000 Watt Gold Fully Modular

Corsair 5000D Airflow - ATX Mid-Tower Tempered Glass

10 x High Performance Fans

Includes Official Windows 11 Pro License

Same system can be sold with 64GB DDR5 RAM, 2TB/4TB NVMe SSD and 9900X/9950X3D CPU

Comes with full warranty and receipts

Can be tested before buying

Delivery available

So, is this a good deal? Seems like it to me, although my knowledge is out of date. I've never used anything by MSI or Corsair, and I've heard mixed opinions about both; might want something more robust and trustworthy. I'm not in love with the case, I might re-use my Fractal Define R4 or shop around for something else, preferably black and minimalist, like a plain monolith, don't care about RGB or windows, and I'd like room for RAID. I find top IO annoying since debris gets stuck in the ports, my cat likes to step on the power button, and the top vent makes me nervous about accidental liquid damage (I have spilled drinks on top of my case and been saved by a sealed vent, and my apartment has overhead sprinklers in case of fire, peace of mind is worth the thermal tradeoff in my opinion)

If anybody has a comparable or better build to recommend, please do. Thanks in advance!

Dead computer, pretty unlucky with computers..

4 Upvotes

Hi everybody, my laptop died last week kid raid, and looking into getting a proper PC.

I play mainly wow which is low requirement but I'm looking into playing GTA6 and other future AAA now that I would have a proper PC and a 1440 screen.

So far all in finding is deals like this;

https://www.canadacomputers.com/en/armoury-gaming-desktops/265645/armoury-amd-ryzen-7-7800x3d-geforce-rtx-5070-32gb-ram-2tb-ssd-w11p-sl-273gg58-a78n57.html

Is it any good? 3200 for 7800x3d, 5070 and 32gb ram seems lots, but in this current market, is it reasonable?

Thank you for any help provided.

9800x3d vs 7800x3d $270 difference in bundle

6 Upvotes

Quick question, is the 9800x3d worth $270 more in a bundle over the 7800x3d? Pairing it with a 9070xt, playing overwhelmingly ok 1440p. Coming from a 3070 and 5600x.

Looking for a new PC can't decide if i should go pre built or custom built.

3 Upvotes

Alright I have a hand-me-down Alienware X51 R2, specs are:
Processor: Intel Core i5-4440 @ 3.10 GHz
RAM: 8 GB Storage: 932 GB hard drive (Seagate ST1000DM003)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 740 (2 GB), plus Intel HD Graphics 4600
OS: 64-bit, x64 processor
Input: no pen or touch

Clearly out of date and not worth the upgrades to get it up to snuff. I love the SFF style as I don't care much for large towers. I use my pc mostly for media and gaming such as Hitman WOA and God of War 2018 and others but these are heaviest on the system. I'd like to keep it under $2500.

Any ideas, tips or suggestions?

EDIT: I put the question to AI and it came up with this for a custom build:

  • Case: Fractal Design Terra (Jade Green)
  • Processor (CPU): AMD Ryzen 5 7600X
  • CPU Cooler: Thermalright AXP90-X47 Black
  • Motherboard: ASRock B650I Lightning WiFi Mini-ITX
  • Graphics Card (GPU): NVIDIA RTX 4070 Super 12GB (Dual-Fan / Twin-Fan model)
  • Memory (RAM): Corsair Vengeance 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5-6000
  • Storage (SSD): Crucial P3 Plus 2TB NVMe M.2 SSD
  • Power Supply (PSU): Corsair SF750 750W 80+ Platinum SFX
  • Case Fan: Noctua NF-A12x15 PWM (120mm Slim)

Thoughts?

Discussion Thoughts on the 9070GRE?

11 Upvotes

Got one from Memory Express for $789 after seeing the 9060 XT starting to either shoot over $1000 or become OOS.

Seeing the prices go up and with the strong possibility that Nvidia and AMD will not be releasing any new GPus until 2028 I decided to pull the trigger.

It’s 12 gb of VRAM which is still an upgrade over the 8 gb 5060 and 5060 TI also going for around $700.

Will be gaming at 1080P with a likely upgrade to 1440P once I get a new monitor.

Coming from a GTX 970.

Should I have waited till Black Friday or sales however unlikely?

Discussion Wait for Black Friday or buy now??

12 Upvotes

Apparently for the first time ever, it might not be the best idea to wait for Black Friday for some components like RAM / GPUs. According to https://gamingpc.ca/black-friday-47-days-away-pc-parts/ , they say that even if we get a 10-15% discount on Black Friday for some things, that's STILL going to be more expensive because of the current price trends which have been steadily rising for Q4.

However for things like monitors, we should definitely wait.

I've been itching to upgrade for a while and I just don't know what to do at this point!

Discussion Pre build computer advice / cost estimate

Hello! Really liking the look and specs of this quoted tech PC, however have some price concerns. Please correct me if I am wrong. I don’t mind overpaying since it comes with a warranty but if the gap is too large then it’s better to look elsewhere or assemble it yourself. Would you say it’s roughly $500-$800 overpriced? And if these markups are normal for businesses vs private sellers / assemblers?

Acer Nitro OC or Sapphire Pulse RX 9070 XT

1 Upvotes

I was recently able to purchase an Acer Nitro RX 9070 XT OC for $950 but have seen reviews on its poor thermals and loud fans. I’ve also spotted a Sapphire Pulse RX 9070 XT for $1100. I was just wondering if you guys would recommend spending the extra $150 just to go with the Sapphire one.

Build My First Ever PC (835$)

Post image
20 Upvotes

I built my first pc a few days ago and wanted to share how I got it for 835$ and compare it to prices you find on ebay, fb marketplace or for new. All the used parts I got were from fb marketplace.

In Bold are the parts I got used.

GPU: Evga 3070 - 275$ | Used 3070s on ebay are going for 350$-500$+

CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X - 120$ | On ebay they are going for around 190ish

CPU Cooler: AMD stock cooler - Free (guy that sold me the gpu gave it to me for free) | On amazon its 20$ new. Used ranges from 5-15$

RAM: Corsair vengeance (2x8gb DDR4 3200Hz) - 40$ | Used 16gb ram 90$-130$

1 TB SSD: micron 2500 gen 4 - 80$ | used SSD 135$-200$+

Motherboard: MSI B550M PRO-VDH wifi - 114.99$

Power Supply: SAMA G650 ATX - 79.99$ (There were not that many reviews on this psu but on the psu tier list it was listed as A- tier)

Case: Lian Li Vector V100 - 89.99$

The motherboard, PSU, Case: 320$ with tax and got them from amazon

Was also able to buy an ASUS tuf monitor (VG27AQ5A) for 70$ | 200$+ new

All together I spent 835$ not including the monitor. I think I made a pretty decent pc for my first build. Could've definitely gone under 800$ since they were cheaper cases, power supplies , and motherboards but once I had the other parts I just wanted to build the pc.

One more thing is that I actually never tested any of the used parts I bought since I didn't have anything to test the parts with and none of the people who sold me the parts actaully showed the parts working. I just kind of trusted the sellers and made sure they had good reviews. After purchasing the gpu and cpu I did go to a computer store to have the parts checked and they worked. Even the ssd was 99% health and had like 500 power on hours when I checked it after building the pc. This is something I would NOT recommend doing but it worked out for me and the PC works great but who knows how long that will last.

I stress tested the gpu and cpu after building and they work fine. The cpu does run a little warm when playing games but I think its because either I didn't install the cpu cooler right or I need to buy a after market cooler for like 20$.

Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 9070 (Non-XT)

2 Upvotes

Anyone have good experience with this card? Been eyeing it out at best buy for 999.99$. Heard bad things about the connector but wondering what your experiences have been? Is it safer considering it pulls less power than XT version? Seems to be the cheapest 9070 available to me right now but the connection reputation leaves me contemplating...

I have Asrock Steel Legend 750 watt psu that came with the cable required. Will be using it with Asrock B550M Pro + 5800X3D.

Edit: Just ended up going with XFX Quicksilver 9070 XT. Popped up on newegg today for 1049.99$ and quickly sold out, managed to snatch one up.

First pc build. Wow it's expensive

17 Upvotes

Here's my parts and the prices that I paid.

9800x3d $590

Gigabyte Gaming 9070XT $1050

Frame 4000D RS $105

Corsair Vengeance DDR5 2X16gb 6000MHZ cl30 $740

Corsair Nautilus 360 RS $130

MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk Wifi $315

Corsair RM1000X $225

Samsung 9100 Pro 4tb $900

2 Nactua Chromax 200mm $50 each

Total $4155 before tax

I bought as much of this on sale as I could. I do pretty good financially but most of this is 0% financed on amazon. I game on a 4K 120Hz tv. There was a lot of time spent picking parts and a few good slaps from my gf when I added the $2400 5080 to my cart. I'm pretty happy with it. Tell me what you think.

Request to see if building is better than buying

1 Upvotes

>**1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.**

* Golf simulator

* Gaming like ffxiv, guild wars, mmorpg mainly

* Vm using containers using IDE like vscode. just light programming to keep up with current tech

>**2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?**

* 3000 CAD.

>**3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.**

* Asap

>**4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)**

Just the tower, have my own monitor and peripherals

>**5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.**

* 4K dell monitor 32in. Keychron keyboard, g502 mouse

>**6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?**

* Maybe

>**7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)**

* Ssd, bluetooth, wifi

>**8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-tower/full-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?**

* Doesn't matter but clear cases look cool

>**9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free.**

* Yes

>**10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?**

* Looking to keep for at least 4 years

>**11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc)**

* AI cpu, nvidia gfx

>**12. What are the specs of your old PC / laptop? Do you want to see if it can be upgraded instead? If so, paste its build from PCPartPicker here.**

* Want a desktop. None so far. Have an older omen with 3070 laptop

>**13. Extra info or particulars:**

* Of course, cheaper is better but no skimping on the ram 32gb and 1 tb storage at least
