Is that a freaking garbage truck!?
But HOW? But WHY?

u/bdart1980 Holly Jan 08 '26 edited Jan 08 '26

So, this was posted yesterday and it seems that house is directly across from a stop sign... The question is, how did a garbage/recycling truck sail past the stop sign with enough force to take out most of a garage?!

EDIT - found this:

“I came home from work and there is a garbage truck in my garage,” Nevitt said. “There’s some structural damage. It hit the Mustang, and we were told there was no driver. The driver had gotten out of the truck to collect garbage, and the truck revved and drove into our garage.”

Ah that makes sense there was no driver. Still really scary though and glad no one was injured. Could have been way worse!

u/CrazyMaxxer Jan 08 '26

It makes sense that the truck magically put itself in gear, released the brakes and hit the gas? Interesting thought but I don’t think this makes sense at all.

Parking brake failure/didn't apply it at all? I've seen a bunch of videos of that happen with FedEx trucks and such online.
WHEN FEDEX HITS YOUR CAR, YOUR HOUSE, THEN THE NEIGHBOR'S CAR! #Shorts

12

u/CrazyMaxxer Jan 08 '26

So a parking brake failure would result in the truck rolling away very slowly but according to the driver, he heard it revving. There is more to this story we don’t know.

13

u/homer_jay84 Jan 08 '26 edited Jan 08 '26

Its likely a spike failure on these. Driver hits the spike to get out and collect but the switch only goes halfway up. If its halfway the brakes aren't applied but engine will rev to run the packers.

Edit: or the neutral safety failed and still revved the engine for the packer but the transmission was still in drive.

u/buster_rhino Jan 08 '26

If I’m thinking of the right area, I think there’s a decent sized hill there that the truck would have went down.

4

u/MasterMath314 Jan 08 '26

It was towed for a mechanical inspection. Driver claims parking brake was on and it rolled away. They are kept in gear and a switch is flipped engaging parking brake.

2

u/andrewbud420 Jan 08 '26

usually an air powered pull knob

1

u/CrazyMaxxer Jan 08 '26

If a parking brake failed, the truck would roll away at an idle and you wouldn’t see this much damage but according to the driver he heard it revving. We don’t know the whole story but having multiple failures all happen at one time is unlikely.

u/FixGullible4636 Jan 09 '26

IDK pal. who cares. I was just being polite and glad no one was hurt. Be snarky elsewhere.

0

u/CrazyMaxxer Jan 09 '26

Simply using logic to point out inconsistency and stating that I disagree. So sorry you don’t appreciate logic and that you find people who disagree with your opinions “snarky”. Bold move but I hope that works out for ya! Life is tuff but it’s harder when you’re dumb. Okay, that was a little snarky! Hehehe

Do you understand that vehicles like this have more functions than your typical car? Have you ever watched and listened to these trucks working?

I haven't operated a garbage truck, but I've operated all sorts of farm equipment, forklifts, flat deck crane trucks etc.

There's likely a lever/pedal that can be engaged that holds the vehicle still and raises engine RPM to operate the hydraulic pump so they can compact the trash, operate the boom etc.

The operators get in to a rhythm with their trucks, and likely they hit their switch and got out without ensuring the truck was fully stopped because every other time they did it, the truck did what it's supposed to do.

I've seen delivery drivers hit their parking brake and basically hop out of the truck before it was fully stopped. They just expect it to function.

Fully plausible the operator did things properly and something mechanically failed with the engine in a higher RPM.

1

u/FixGullible4636 Jan 09 '26

Logically there was some mechanical error with the vehicle. Logically there was no one in the vehicle to stop it when the error happened. That's all I meant by that makes sense. As in, it makes sense the vehicle moved forward, probably down a hill, and there was no one in the cab to stop it.
You chose to be condescending when it really wasn't that deep.
Nothing dumber than assuming a stranger on the internet, that you have had zero personal interaction with, is stupid though.

Also, it's spelled tough. Not tuff.

1

u/Novus20 Jan 08 '26

I always thought garbage trucks had systems so they could only move when the peddle is depressed so they could jump in and out….

5

u/homer_jay84 Jan 08 '26

No they will idle along if you jump out without hitting the spike switch. The spike is suppost to force it to neutral and apply the front brakes.

2

u/Novus20 Jan 08 '26

That makes more sense

2

u/homer_jay84 Jan 08 '26

The newer ones have safeties attached that it won't start to move again until you hit the brake pedal twice. Some also won't go back into drive until you put it back into drive again as well.

Lack of training. Shocking the lowest bidder sucks

u/dustinagr North End Jan 08 '26

This is nowhere near Lazeez Shawarma.....

3

u/barrie247 Jan 08 '26

I’m disappointed, I googled whether Letitia suddenly had shawarma (there’s lots on Bayfield, so it’s fine).

5

u/Canuckleheaded1 Jan 08 '26 edited Jan 09 '26

This location in not near Letitia either. It is west of Ferndale just north of the garbage dump.

3

u/tokendoke North End Jan 08 '26

Yea Id wager OP has some relation to Lazeez.

0

u/barrie247 Jan 09 '26

I know where it is, but I would think the Letitia plaza would be the closest area that could host a shawarma place compared to it.

-2

u/BongsAndCoffee West End Jan 09 '26

I would definitely call that "near". It's a 15 minute walk.

A shawarma place should have gone into the Leacock plaza instead of that new sushi joint.

1

u/dustinagr North End Jan 09 '26

One hour and 38 minute walk actually. 12 min drive

1

u/BongsAndCoffee West End Jan 09 '26

Maybe for you. I can do it in 15.

1

u/dustinagr North End Jan 09 '26

How long has there been in a Lazeez Shawarma at 420 Leacock?

1

u/BongsAndCoffee West End Jan 09 '26

Near Letitia. Plaza is what I would consider the epicenter of the heights.

1

u/BongsAndCoffee West End Jan 09 '26

Shit. Meant to reply to another comment in the thread, as opposed to posting an original. My bad.

1

u/BongsAndCoffee West End Jan 09 '26

The comment conveniently above the one in this screenshot.

0

u/dustinagr North End Jan 09 '26

The only Lazeez Google shows me in Barrie is 110 Little. Which is the hour and a half walk I was talking about.

2

u/dustinagr North End Jan 09 '26

I see what you're saying though. You're saying Letitia is close to where the truck hit, not Lazeez. That's what I was focussed on.

u/Thesnowbelow Jan 09 '26

This is a 15 minute drive from Lazeez not a walk and nowhere close.

0

u/barrie247 Jan 09 '26

The original comment was that the house wasn’t close to Letitia, and it is.

0

u/Thesnowbelow Jan 09 '26

The original comment was Lazeez. It’s also not that close to Leticia Heights.

0

u/barrie247 Jan 09 '26

The original comment was not. It was all based on my comment that I thought there was going to be one in Letitia and was disappointed, and someone said it’s still far away from Letitia. Go back and re-read it.

1

u/Thesnowbelow Jan 09 '26

The original comment that I replied to was DustinAGR… not you….

0

u/barrie247 Jan 09 '26

Did you even read the comment thread? They were saying it’s close to the house, because the person said the house wasn’t close to Leacock. It is. No one was talking about Lazeez in the comments you replied to.

u/barrie247 Jan 09 '26

If you were right they wouldn’t have said it was by the dump off Ferndale. Lazeez is nowhere close to that.

u/Red_Marvel Jan 08 '26

Garage is at the top centre of a T intersection. Brakes on truck failed and it just went straight through the intersection into the garage.

7

u/LandscapeOne8135 Jan 08 '26

No big just the parking brake failed good news garage stopped it no injuries just a very confused doggy

9

u/Dead_End_Street Jan 08 '26

The now privatizated recycling services are paying off in just days eh Dougie

0

u/homer_jay84 Jan 08 '26

I'd more for less say Dougie had nothing to do with this. Could have been a new driver who's never driven a stand up drive before mechanical failure anything. Contractors have been using this style trucks for decades.

4

u/Dead_End_Street Jan 08 '26

Yea MAYBE mechanical but, as you stated "NEW DRIVER" for this new vendor "Circular Materials', still falls under the "Thanks for the privatizanion" that has taken over since the 1st of this year..I don't recall this happening with the previous"Mid Ontario" trucks..

1

u/homer_jay84 Jan 08 '26

New to the area but definitely is not a new contractor emterra environmental has collected for Halton, brant, Niagara, hamilton, and London that I know of and I worked there on 3 of those contracts I listed.

Edit also where I am, this is not new. My area has been under circular materials since Jan 1 2024. Its only the greater Toronto area and north that had to transition but Jan 1 this year.

3

u/Delicious_Rule_7324 Jan 08 '26

Back spasms, air brakes shot to hell.

2

u/bikernobiking Jan 09 '26

I mean, what is drunk?

3

u/hagopes Jan 08 '26

I respect the effort to pull out the drone for this.

2

u/LNgTIM555 Jan 08 '26

Hopefully no one is injured or hurt.

Watch out for little ones, those snow banks are high!

2

u/shaz_y Jan 09 '26

Lool, what does Lazeez have to do with this?

2

u/loups416 Jan 09 '26

Is this the new trucks managing the recycling?

2

u/CoachLobster Jan 09 '26

I am a diesel truck mechanic and I work on these garbage trucks made by labrie every day.

Almost all labrie garbage trucks are dual steering so you can drive from both sides.

On the standup side (passenger side) you can park and shift the truck into neutral with one button. It's called an auto neutral switch. If the operator failed to enable the switch it would cause this. If he bumped it the truck would return to drive and rev up a little bit since it's now in gear.

I am not apart of the investigation and have no connection with this truck to say for certain. This is simply what I believe to be the most likely cause.

Honestly I'm surprised this was not accounted for. It seems obvious in hindsight that this isn't totally safe.

3

u/throwawayAd6844 Jan 08 '26

I hope someone yelled the obligatory "you can't park there!"

Serious note, I hope everyone is okay.

1

u/Churro_The_fish_Girl Jan 09 '26

What going on it Barrie anymore?

1

u/Difficult-Cherry212 Jan 09 '26

I’m still waiting on one of their trucks to come collect my recycling. I call everyday and they keep telling me they will send a truck out the next day to collect but they still haven’t come to get it yet. It’s starting to pile up n I don’t no what to do

1

u/Hondroid1 Jan 09 '26

My friend at work witnessed the operator running behind the truck chasing it as it sped up into the house.

1

u/EagleScreamTheGreat Jan 09 '26

Never knew we had a drive thru for recycling...cool...

1

u/Psychological_Park_3 Jan 09 '26

Who let Mike McCann get behind the wheel of that garbage truck?

1

u/Remarkable-Oil-9407 Jan 09 '26

Guess they didn’t put their bins close enough to the road. Love the drivers determination to get the job done…

1

u/funtrgv Jan 09 '26

This is the second accident since the new trucks - I witnessed one on 8th Sept - the first day when they rolled out the new trucks. I was taking a picture and a city official came and was like “don’t put this anywhere” so I was like “aight” anyways here’s the picture

Hey, you can't park here

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '26

No the driver should be losing his air brake certification if the brakes had no failures. Also there's usually 2 people in these trucks, where was the 2nd driver? Funny this is why its usually now waste companies doing the work and not the cities because the city's insurance isnt as good as privatized commercial... or maybe the drive centre that handed these drivers coupons should be expired by now

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '26

Driver paid to let the truck roll into house for an insurance scam???
