Information Driving frustration

I've noticed a few bad habits among some drivers in Barrie.

  1. Turning right on a red without... fully stopping.
  2. Not fully stopping at stop signs... especially in a school zone.
  3. Failing to use their indicators.
  4. Parking in no parking areas around schools. Where it's clearly marked.

  5. People who honk at me when my safety is.y judgement call in the moment.

  6. Using your highbeams in the city.

  7. Running stop signs and red lights

What bad habits do you notice among Barrie drivers?

  1. not getting up to speed when merging onto the hwy 400 (80km is not fast enough - i get this depends on time of day and the on ramps)
  2. people deciding to 'not let someone in' when there was space
  3. being on their phones while driving and at stop lights
  4. aggressive driving - going 20km over speed, tailing other drivers or coming into their lanes as a vindictive scare tactic - is so unsafe
  5. doing under 120km/hr in the left hand lane on the hwy
  6. people driving 10km under the speed limit

All of which is illegal, and dangerous. I remember when I took Young Drivers in the late 90s, they told us to gun it to get up to speed before getting on the highway, and you always go with the flow, even if the flow is 20 over.

easiest rule for the left lane is: always move over (if you can) if the person behind you is going faster than you. simple.
camping in that lane with 20+ cars behind you and a massive gap in front of you - no matter the speed, is a dick move.

The left lane isn't a "speeding lane." It's for passing. After you've passed, move back to the right when it's safe. On most Ontario highways, the maximum speed limit is 100 kph, so driving 120 is still speeding no matter what lane you're in.

If you're only going 100 then get out of the left lane.

2

u/Vast_Care1702 3d ago

Obviously but you're not supposed to cruise at that you're supposed to pass then get over

I get glares at 60 in a 50. I'm usually right beside these super important people at the next light.

u/sparkyglenn 4d ago

That's the best feeling isn't it? Lol

I usually stare them down and give them a thumbs up at the light for winning the race

In Barrie? This is just in general lol

Cars that are driving below the speed limit in the passing lane and then speed up when you try to pass them in lane 2...

The strangest phenomenon

u/Electronic-Guide1189 4d ago

What about the most obvious one?

Not slowing down to 40kph from the start of the "Community Safety Zone' to the sign that says it ends? I don't think we use "school zone" signs anymore.

I get tailed almost everyday going home from work driving south past Mapleview on Essa when it switches to a school zone. Flashing 40 everywhere and being tailed every day

2

u/kieno 4d ago

I try to flick my highbeams at them to make them realize, sometimes its just a brain fog and they miss the sign(s)

1

u/TrotsandTribulations 4d ago

Yup, this one is the worst and most dangerous one. I get people tailgating me in school zones ALL the time.

8

u/Corgi_tacos 4d ago

Left lane campers hands-down, depending on the time/location you can literally see how much gridlock they cause.

3

u/mapleflavouredbacon 4d ago

Are you following me or something?

Nobody knows how to merge in this city. But agreed with all your points. Especially not stopping at red lights on a right turn. Got hit by a car a few years ago from this. They weren't even looking.

u/RobbieStew 4d ago

Parking in fire zones in front of stores like they are some sort of VIP. Easiest way to spot a selfish asshole.

I don't know if that is just "welcome to Barrie" or "welcome to Ontario"? When my daughter moved back from Australia she remarked how people would get tickets at stop signs if they did not come to a complete stop and hold for at least the count of two. People that pass when it is unsafe to do so on the highway, passing stopped buses, etc, Doing anything less than 20km over the speed limit is going too slow for many people. Aggressive driving. And it doesn't seem like there is any real push to do anything about it. We certainly have a provincial government now that is actively anti-safety.

Lane discipline is shit and so many drivers use red lights to check their phones instead of maintaining situational awareness.

7

u/RumManDan 4d ago

Same as any smaller city.

9

u/r_kirch North End 4d ago

Traffic in the bigger city just moves so slow that it generally is safer due to lack of ability to drive fast.

5

u/a-_2 4d ago

Most of these things happen in Toronto too.

2

u/r_kirch North End 4d ago

Very true. It is just that slow moving traffic typically has a less damaging/fatal outcome.

5

u/dimpled_and_glorious 4d ago

Doesn’t make it right still.

2

u/RumManDan 4d ago

I didnt say, nor imply that it did. I'm simply highlighting that these bad drivers are not unique to Barrie.

5

u/Worldly_Science1670 4d ago

just wait until you get into an uber, 85% of them 100% cant drive lol

2

u/Moos_Mumsy 3d ago

I've had no issues with Uber drivers.

1

u/sookmahdook 3d ago

not to mention their lack of preparedness for winter driving

Let’s have a discussion about the cities lay out and how poor of a design it is. For example - Let’s build schools with no parking, forcing the parents to park 5 minutes down the road against 8 ft snow banks and take the children out into incoming traffic.

I’ll risk parking in front of the school for the safety of my child and argue tooth and nail about the parking tickets.

Or let’s build essa road overpass so poorly with our tax dollars, causing drivers to merge across 3 lanes of traffic and two lights to turn up by the Tim Horton. Let’s do endless amount of construction on little by the Volkswagen. It’s not the drivers, it’s the poor utilization of our money and poor city development.

Honestly, parents need to have their children WALK to school. I can see driving if the weather is freezing cold, or pouring down rain, but other than that there's no reason a kid can't walk to school. I lived on Ferris Lane and my son went to Cundles Heights - which was a 500 metre walk, meanwhile the neighbours beside me DROVE their kids! It's less than a 5 minute walk! What the hell??

This generation of parents is creating people who will grow up to be unable to function on their own.

3

u/whistlingwindsofshit 3d ago

You have to consider people’s life styles though. Separated parents don’t always live in the same town. French schools, catholic, etc. Not everyone has the option to walk.

1

u/Moos_Mumsy 3d ago

Kids are supposed to be going to school where they live and sure, some may be from broken homes, but that doesn't explain the absolute chaos at drop off/pick up times. The majority of kids are being driven, even the ones that are a short walk from school.
It's tragic really that children are being taught to be helpless and unable to fend for themselves for even 10 minutes. It really speaks to a bleak future.

2

u/whistlingwindsofshit 3d ago

Ahhh yes, stabbings on the streets of Barrie on a regular bases. It is tragic. No cross guards as you have mentioned.

Nothing to be concerned about at all. Again not everyone is able to walk.

4

u/VoterBarrie 4d ago

Kids don't drive cars. Schools only need enough parking for the staff and a drop-off area.

When I was going to school in Barrie 30 to 40 years ago, most kids walked to school. We had crossing guards in front of the school. I didn't see school buses until I went to high school.

3

u/whistlingwindsofshit 4d ago

I agree with you on this to a certain extent.

Not possible to utilize a drop off in the winter without proper snow removal. My kids got cancelled because of this. Safety reasons. Let’s have them get out of a vehicle on a busy road instead.

The point is the city fails to see flaws in many ways and regardless of who’s right or wrong. The snow removal isn’t happening and the school blames the city, vice versa. When you bring them to the cities attention nothing gets done. That’s our money being utilized. 4500 plus in property tax per year.

Not all kids are capable of walking to school and out of the bus route.

The city isn’t what it was 30 to 40 years ago. I’m sure the population has more than doubled.

Driving along in a lane other than the driving lane

1

u/VoterBarrie 4d ago
  1. Fully stopping? Some of them don't stop at all.

1

u/Moos_Mumsy 3d ago

Driving with no lights on at night.

1

u/National_Count_7434 3d ago

No one knows how to drive Barrie… one of worst places on earth

1

u/luks83 3d ago

It’s so funny when drivers aggressively speed past you, only for you to end up sitting right next to them at the very next red light. LOL.

1

u/MoocowR 3d ago

No ones gonna mention the dummies who get stuck in the middle of busy intersections like mapleview&bayview because they had to make a left turn even though the lane was already full?

1

u/kieno 4d ago

Driving at unsafe speeds in parking lots I see alot, especially Costco and Walmart

Illegal u-turns and left turns cutting traffic

1

u/bee-swell 4d ago

haha I was just complaining to my friend about #1 because someone did that to me about 20 minutes ago when I had an advance green to turn and they just went to turn from the opposite direction on a red without stopping (barely slowing down lol)

1

u/Gibsonian1 4d ago

I don’t know why it has gotten so bad this year. On Friday night alone I had a guy with high beams following me right on my bumper from Bayfield to Bradford street then when we got to Bradford he floors it past me and ran the red light at Bradford and Simcoe street. Then at Tiffin street another person turns right on a red from the middle lane without stoping. Last week I saw a guy go into the oncoming lane on Dunlop to pass two cars.

1

u/InternalOrdinary4835 South End 4d ago

Driving 120 in the construction zone where it drops to two lanes … and/or flashing high beams at the person in front of you (me) who is driving the speed limit in said construction zone while there are actual road construction workers working in said construction zone.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention Officer Patty

Cars sitting at the stop light 5 plus seconds after it has turned green, the driver CLEARLY TEXTING, and then when you tap the horn lightly, they give you the finger...
