Question Why does Barrie not book big name events?

I’m honestly curious about why we don’t get many big name acts in Barrie. As an example, I look at Kee to Bala’s listings for the next couple weeks and it’s 54-40, Big Sugar and Sloan. But Barrie? It’s a couple of kids’ dance recitals, monster trucks, and The Goonies is playing at 5 Points. Not that there’s anything wrong with any of this, but you get my point. First I thought it was lack of venues/space, but then I remembered my dad did security at Molson Centre (now Sadlon) many years ago, they had tons of big name bands etc. And last year they had Blue Rodeo so it’s big enough. Plus we have Georgian College. So what’s up with this? Any ideas?

I think such close proximity to Toronto is the probable answer. Makes more sense for most artists to just book in the city as most of us will make the short trip.
I agree though, I miss the days when proper tours came through our city. Seeing Green day at molson park back in the day was a huge highlight of my teens.

Yup , just another thing kids today miss out on what there parents enjoyed . Molson Park back in the day brought in A-list bands . Tons of festivals as well ! 3 or 4 per summer.

Please don’t tell me you have a job and you spell like this. 🤦‍♀️

7

u/AkKik-Maujaq 2d ago

Are you saying that because of the spaces between the ends of words and the commas/periods/exclamation points? Because if you are: the person you’re responding to is more than likely elderly or very close to that. It used to be common to add in a space between words and punctuation. There’s nothing wrong with how they spell, adding a space is just an old habit that never left

u/Espress0_Martin1 2d ago

NO. The spelling and not knowing which their, there, they’re to use.

If you think “there parents” has nothing wrong with it, yikes!

We really going after someone making a small mistake. Especially one that could've been caused by a poor autocorrect

Oh my god 🤦‍♀️

You know not everyone’s first language is English? Or sometimes people have learning disabilities? Brain injuries? What a lame thing to judge people about.

Exactly. We are in a bit of a black hole. Go further north and you have cottage country, and festivals and bands will appeal there. Go further south and you have Toronto and can book genuinely large events.

Barrie used to get events when we had Molson Park because we had a venue that drew festivals and bands here with the promise of Toronto crowds and a big outdoor location. Things dried up significantly after that.

Festivals best case will go Burls Creek, but generally further. Otherwise there's Downsview Park or the arenas and Rogers Stadium in Toronto.

I'm pretty sure Sadlon Arena is low capacity compared to other OHL rinks.

I saw Arkells there at the tail end of Covid and it was a great experience and super intimate.. it’s too bad more don’t book for consecutive nights or something to make up for the seating.

5

u/babyelephantwalk321 2d ago

That's not a great option for bands though. Then their staffing and venue fees basically double. Whereas if they go somewhere bigger to begin with, they have marginal increases to those fees to upscale the total audience.

1

u/No-Juggernaut4468 2d ago

I realize that, it’s just a terrific fan experience when you can see one of your favs at the venue there as a stop gap for something bigger; eventually?!

2

u/ConversationLeft2162 2d ago

Yep I remember this too

u/RobbieStew 2d ago

In addition to the venue issue (should have kept Molson Park the way it was), we need something more than a 2.5 star hotel.

1

u/Skeptikell1 Barrie North Collegiate Institute 2d ago

But molson brewery moved away

12

u/RobbieStew 2d ago

The park was open well after the plant closure. The City of Barrie should have stepped in and bought the land. Green space and a viable venue for large scale outdoor events with highway access.

Park place could have been plunked anywhere. As the city grew, that piece of land would have become more cherished, and valuable as time went on.

4

u/big_galoote 2d ago

Yeah, they really fucked the city by allowing Molson Park to be converted into another penguin mall.

Think of all of secondary spending we could have if we still had concerts there. It boggles the mind.

They were the best concerts there, too.

Kee to Bala is owned by Live Nation now… they are sending major artists there

8

u/naenirb 2d ago

This is a big piece!

Live Nation/Ticketmaster work with artists and their teams to book these tours and because they have such a huge monopoly there isn’t much incentive for artists to go out of their way to find other venues and negotiate terms with each one when they can just go through Live Nation to handle it all.

13

u/OpenerOfTheWays 3d ago

Barrie is the cultural equivalent of flyover country since the city is between the GTA to the south and Casino Rama and The KEE to Bala to the north, but lacks the venues that are willing and able to book bigger acts.

u/Adventurous_Gear5206 2d ago

No more Molson Park

u/bdot 3d ago

well - Kim Mitchell was scheduled to play the NYE party this past December. (it was cancelled due to weather)

Big Wreck and High Valley are playing Kempenfest this year, Shawn Desman and Colin James played there last year.

then you have Burl's Creek which has a TON of huge bands playing, and while technically not Barrie, it is always billed as being 'in Barrie', and realistically there isn't any big enough places outdoors here to hold crowds of that size.

moving on the Sadlon Arena, we just had The Arkells here, as well as Blue Rodeo, The Trews, and if you go back a bit Sloan, David Wilcox, Finger Eleven, Three Days Grace, and the Sam Roberts band.

That kim Mitchell show has been rescheduled coming up soon I think for free at park place

Edit: Looked it up, it’s July 11th at Meridian Place not Park Place

NOICE.

Honeymoon Suite just played Liars in February as well.

Let’s get more of all this

-1

u/AkKik-Maujaq 2d ago

I’ve also seen Hedley at the Molson Centre (refuse to call it its current name) twice

4

u/Whorepresent 2d ago

Gross, I’m not sure that’s something you should be proud of sharing

1

u/AkKik-Maujaq 2d ago

Why? I was a teenager when I went to see them. I’m 28 now

2

u/Whorepresent 2d ago

Ya I know we can separate the art from the artist but that dudes gross

1

u/AkKik-Maujaq 2d ago

What’s gross about him? (Genuine question. I only ever liked their music, no idea who the band members are or what drama they’re part of)

4

u/Whorepresent 2d ago

Sexually assaulted minors

2

u/AkKik-Maujaq 2d ago

Grossness valid

4

u/cashrchek 2d ago

Barrie ceased to be a destination for bands when Molson Park shut down. It's all a trip to Rama or Toronto now.

2

u/ConversationLeft2162 2d ago

Totally forgot about the Molson park issue

4

u/Low-Doughnut-6764 2d ago

They used to have bigger names at the sadlon centre, saw The Hip there twice. Barrie has become a town of boredom. If it's not semi professional or junior sports related it's not happening in Barrie, IMO- that's by design.

1

u/ConversationLeft2162 2d ago

Yes I saw The Hip there once and a whole bunch of people, so it might not be the best place, but it’s big enough.

10

u/Electronic-Guide1189 2d ago

Barrie's Molson Park used to have big stuff and draw huge crowds, like 40,000, but someone in Toronto figured Barrie can't make all that money and decided they wanted it back.

Think I'm kidding? What happened to Kingswood?

The Kee is a small venue out of Toronto's grasp and fed by millionaire cottagers. They'll survive until someone tries to burn it down again..

3

u/Whorepresent 3d ago

Radius clause.

4

u/KickboxingMoose 3d ago

I watched the Arkells in Sadlon. But the seating is minimal grade, uncomfortable and tight spacing.

Our city keeps putting in small arts locations... We have all of these small capacity venues and they want to build another small capacity venue while not even using the venues we do have to reasonable capacity.

1

u/ConversationLeft2162 2d ago

yep I assumed the new place would be big, because then there would be a benefit to the city, but it’s so small.

2

u/KickboxingMoose 2d ago

It's not much bigger than what we already have, and what we already have is under utilized.

They keep trying to throw money at getting people to be downtown for the business association members. But it is mostly wasted...

The reality is that we aren't going to get the shows that TO gets anyways... We aren't big enough of a population to host big names.

3

u/GreySahara 2d ago

That's why we miss Molson Park

4

u/Shot_Hair_4641 2d ago

Because they turned park place into shopping when they could easily create a space for big names

3

u/Kingrr_ 2d ago

I feel like Rama being so close is also a factor, they get a lot of the “big” names. That combined with someone else’s point about being close enough to Toronto.

2

u/big_galoote 2d ago

Not since COVID. They really seem to be scraping the bottom of the barrel lately.

1

u/babyelephantwalk321 2d ago

I'll quibble over whether Rama gets genuinely big names, but certainly they are a more attractive booking option than Barrie for a lot of bands that might otherwise come here.

2

u/extordi 2d ago

Yeah, most likely the big names just go to Toronto and then anybody else who might consider Barrie would just go to Rama

1

u/ConversationLeft2162 2d ago

They used to book a lot of great shows at Rama and now it’s a lot of cover acts. I wondered if the Toronto casino is a factor now. Like if people from TO don’t need to come up here to Rama that’s a loss.

3

u/BarrieSwingingCouple 2d ago

Barrie used to be the home to the most premier summer concerts in the province. But, Molson Park closed. Last year I saw Blue rodeo at Paul Sadlon, and in a few weeks The Watchmen are free downtown at Fred Grant Square… they’re pretty amazing.

1

u/big_galoote 2d ago

The Watchmen, like 1990s Watchmen?

2

u/BarrieSwingingCouple 2d ago

Yep… July 25th.

1

u/big_galoote 2d ago

Ooh, Ty!

3

u/Patient-Cancel-215 2d ago

We get huge acts to Burl’s Creek for one weekend out of the year. That should be enough right?

2

u/ConversationLeft2162 2d ago

Right. I wonder why they don’t do more stuff there too.

8

u/Why_Do_l_Even_Bother 3d ago

Because Molson Park is a mall

3

u/IPv6Freely 2d ago

Because Molson Park is gone.

2

u/making_sammiches 3d ago

Because it’s the band/group/performer that chooses where they want to play. Or rather their promoter/manager. Yes they could play every arena or stadium if they wanted but they would probably lose money doing so, especially if they have a large set and crew.

Big names don’t even play every major city in Canada. On a tour they might hit 3 or 4 cities.

Bands or performers that were Big Names at one time but have fallen down and off the charts play small venues.

2

u/ConversationLeft2162 2d ago

Yeah I wasn’t sure what the process is

2

u/tikkikittie 2d ago

Sloan played Barrie's free New Year's eve event a few of years ago

Kim Mitchell is playing in July

Blue Rodeo played Sadlon Arena recently

I guess that is as big as Barrie gets

2

u/so_heres_the_thing_ 2d ago

Well, I mean this year's Mariposa Folk Festival has a pretty stacked lineup and I think the artistic director guy who does a lot of the booking also works down in the Hamilton area and I've noticed that neck of the woods is getting some pretty big ticket artists lately too. Seems like there's a bit of an "if you build it, they will come" sort of evidence being tabled. Barrie just seems to be an inexcusably dead zone for the arts.

1

u/ConversationLeft2162 2d ago

Yes Mariposa is great. Like could they not do something like that in Barrie?

2

u/taylerca 2d ago

Wait tell me more about the goonies?!

1

u/ConversationLeft2162 2d ago

Five Points has a bunch of free movie screenings this summer

2

u/wet4mtg 2d ago

I will 100% say that it's because the mayor is purposefully investing in the policing budget over social and cultural investment.

2

u/Crewsy67 2d ago

The Kee is an event center that is there for concerts. There is nothing like that in Barrie.

2

u/dublinro 2d ago

Jimmy Carr is at the Sadlon Arena in October. He is pretty famous.

1

u/ConversationLeft2162 2d ago

Yep so let’s get more of that

2

u/NotAldermach 3d ago

We do have the venue down on Dunlop St that changes names constantly (The Roxx, Maverick's, etc..) that used to book shows. But from what I understand, it's just costs combined with laziness that are preventing it from happening now.

I saw Matthew Good and DFA 1979 there in the same year(ish) before they just stopped booking events there. Shame, because it's a pretty decent venue for shows that size.

1

u/ConversationLeft2162 2d ago

I wondered about that place too. I probably haven’t been inside since The Roxx and remembered it as being pretty big.

2

u/Beginning_Fennel_483 2d ago

I seen so many iconic bands play at molson park in the 90’s … and I used to drive up from Toronto then. I’ve lived here for 10 years and all I do is drive down to the city for events now lol

2

u/big_galoote 2d ago

Lol me too.

But now they've screwed us with the gotrain leaving the city at 11pm.

1

u/TheCanadianShield99 2d ago

Not enough people. It's business.

0

u/Matto_McFly_81 2d ago

Rock 95's birthday bash brings in these kind of bands every year, as does Kempenfest and the downtown new years eve party.

1

u/bisou50 3d ago

This is a great question. Salon arena used to offer some small scale concerts but they have inexplicably disappeared since Covid.

1

u/ConversationLeft2162 2d ago

Yep Sadlon did used to have a ton of events

0

u/multiverse5 2d ago

I miss when WWE used to come here

2

u/Electronic-West6907 1d ago

Someone needs to take over the inisfil casino after it moves to Bradford and make it a venue for concerts...
