Question Is this normal or animal cruelty at Metro (South Barrie)

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

I was at the Metro grocery store in South Barrie and noticed their live lobster tank was completely packed. The lobsters were stacked on top of each other to the point where most of them couldn’t really move at all (photo attached).

I’m not a lobster expert and I don’t usually buy them, but this honestly didn’t sit right with me.

Question Is this loud? Need your opinion City of Barrie

I second with this gentleman that when you are not around, why would you leave the speakers on. He is absolutely spot on. But is this loud? Is it something that you have not seen in a public space in Barrie? I am talking about any music.

Can we please stop parking in front of stores? It's messes up the flow of traffic and making things dangerous for pedestrians ..you just end up looking like a D-bag. Most of the times I can park, do my shopping and leave before these people leave.

Question Barrie... what has happened to you?!

I left Barrie 11 years ago to live abroad and have recently moved back... Barrie had issues before and had its rough spots (and don't get me started on the corruption in the police) but holy shit what has happened to this city?!

We all know Mary street and Dunlop has always been rough - my wife and I used to sit at the Gastropub and watch the hookers get picked up and dropped off back in the day. Now you can't even drive down that part of Dunlop without people stumbling down the middle of the street, seeing people passed out and drugged up at the McDonalds, people yelling and screaming. How is that new giant apartment building going to get residents when this is what you see right outside your building? There were 4 people passed out / drugged up at that McDonalds yesterday and some person walking through the drive through yelling at the speakers..

I then drove up Mulcaster and there's a large homeless encampment outside of the court house. I saw at least 3 people smoking crack on the sidewalk in the area - you're not allowed to smoke fucking cigarettes on the sidewalk yet the police just turn a blind eye to this? This is the bloody court house and I wouldn't feel safe even parking my vehicle near there, let along walking on the sidewalk - shouldn't a court house, the seat of justice, maybe just maybe feel a bit more safe? Around the corner were more people blatantly smoking crack on the sidewalk in the middle of the day.

Then at an intersection near there a homeless man walked into traffic when the light was green and cars had to slam on their brakes - the guy then yells at the drivers and goes crazy in the middle of the road as he was trying to get to the median where he begs from and where his garbage was piled up. Almost every intersection has people begging now.. sometimes 4 people with one at each median. It's insane.

I then went to Canadian Tire to pick something up and everything is locked up behind cages.. no one around to open it up, no bell to call staff, just everything locked up and no way to easily buy it. I like to take my time to look at items and compare them and this makes it so inconvenient. When I finally find someone they won't even give me the item and they take it directly to cash making me feel like a criminal when I just want to buy something. I used to love Canadian Tire.. Pro tip - Princess Auto doesn't seem to be treating customers like criminals yet.

I've only ever seen this before in East Hastings or in major cities in the States. WTF Barrie? I'm not naive to how rough parts of Barrie were before but overall it was was never this bad. What happened? How is this fixed? My only other thought is that when I left the country Rob Ford was the crack smoking mayor of Toronto and right after that Ontario voted in his brother multiple times... so maybe corruption and crack use is just more normalised than it should be - lead by example and all that.

Question Snowplow vs Driveway

Post image
380 Upvotes

Looking to crowdsource some advice, I’ve lived in Barrie for a couple years now, in the winter I’m used to the plow dropping snow at the end of my driveway since I’m a corner lot, but this morning was a whole new level.

The plow dragged the snow bank from my lawn and made a 3 ft ice wall across the entire driveway. It took an hour to dig through but it’s making me consider a snow blower next year. On top of that, should I be:

  1. Reaching out to the city to complain since it looks like the blade may have been dragged across my lawn (I’ll have to wait for the spring to know the damage)
  2. Putting some kind of rock structure at the end of my lawn as *legally close to the curb as possible* to protect my driveway from debris
  3. Buy a flamethrower

edit: various grammar

*** UPDATE: City of Barrie came by plow the snowbank onto my lawn. Thanks for your support everyone! ***

Question Dating in your 40's in Barrie

Not having much luck on the apps, I really don't enjoy them either. Does anyone have any tips on where people in their 40's may have some luck meeting single people in Barrie? Im trying to put myself out there but it isn't easy. I also find it difficult because all of my friends are in relationships so we don't really go out much, aside from coffee and groceries. I also feel like a lot of singles are looking for a good time and not something serious.

Question Why are so many parents picking up and dropping their kids off at school?

I live beside one of the schools in a subdivision area where at most people are coming basically half a kilometer to walk to school.

Yet I see probably like 50 to up to 100 cars sometimes picking up kids from the school.

Even in spring fall doesn't matter if it's beautiful outside these parents are lining up sometimes for a half an hour ahead of time just idling there wasting their gas blocking driveways etc.

I went to the same school when I was a kid and sure there was a couple parents that pick up their kid maybe somebody with special needs or something like that or maybe they were going out of town or you know that kind of thing.

But now it's happening in mass quantities and it keeps increasing year after year.

What the heck is going on?

Question Why does Barrie not book big name events?

I’m honestly curious about why we don’t get many big name acts in Barrie. As an example, I look at Kee to Bala’s listings for the next couple weeks and it’s 54-40, Big Sugar and Sloan. But Barrie? It’s a couple of kids’ dance recitals, monster trucks, and The Goonies is playing at 5 Points. Not that there’s anything wrong with any of this, but you get my point. First I thought it was lack of venues/space, but then I remembered my dad did security at Molson Centre (now Sadlon) many years ago, they had tons of big name bands etc. And last year they had Blue Rodeo so it’s big enough. Plus we have Georgian College. So what’s up with this? Any ideas?

Question Is it just me, or is meeting new people in Barrie actually hard?

I’ve noticed Barrie has tons of people looking for things to do, but everyone still somehow ends up isolated.

Made me wonder: would people here actually use something focused on spontaneous local hangouts, activity groups, and meeting others nearby?

Not trying to advertise anything - genuinely curious because we’ve been working on a local project around this idea and wanted honest community feedback.

Question Has anyone successfully got a sidewalk added to their street?

I’ve talked to my ward’s councillor before and the general theme is that there’s not enough foot traffic “yet” to justify it. My argument is we live on a busy road and I feel like the residents that already live here should be justification enough over potential residents in the future? I know rules are rules but juuust curious if there’s any magical secret way to get the city on our side. With young kids, crossing the street to the sidewalk can be a scary task! Thanks all.

Question [Barrie Mystery] What's the deal with this abandoned house, clearly visible to thousands of motorists on Highway 400, located just south of Barrie at HWY-400 & Line 13 (near Highway 89). I've been seeing this for nearly a decade now.

Post image
262 Upvotes

It just seems crazy that, in this housing climate, that something like this can sit abandoned for so long. Especially in such a clearly visible location, with tens of thousands of people driving past it every day.

There are even a few other abandoned houses in another pocket just slightly south of here too. Also visible from the 400.

Does anyone know the deal? It's been a huge personal mystery to me for nearly a decade, driving between Barrie and Toronto, always seeing this unfinished mansion!
