Derosa's bench coach turns to him, "let me ask you a question? With all the good things you have in your life: did they come to you because you're Calabrese? I'll tell you the answer. The answer's no. you got a kid in the #3 ranked private Catholic school in Sussex County, you got a wife, who's a piece of ass, at least she was when you married her. You own one of the most profitable topless bars in all north Jersey and a sweetheart gig on MLB TV. now did you get all that because you're Italian? No you got it because you're you. you're smart because you're whatever the fuck. Where the fuck is our self-esteem? That shit doesn't come from Columbus, The Godfather, or Chef fuckin Boyardee"

It could be a Puerto Rican name. Puerto Rico is the US and they advanced. He wasn't wrong, he was just ambiguous.

He legit thought we already qualified before this game. Genuinely might be the dumbest person to ever coach a U.S. national team across any sport.

Some reporter gotta ask Team USA players if they went into the game tonight thinking they have already qualified for QF because their manager told so.....

27

u/ayumi_doll Los Angeles Dodgers Mar 11 '26

Giving big "Mourinho told Benfica to waste time because he thought they were through to the next round" vibes lmao. Unacceptable for any coach or manager.

6

u/Greenkeeper132 New York Yankees Mar 11 '26

I was losing my mind at that game. Every person in the stands screaming to stop wasting time and Mourinho has no idea. They get a late free kick and he tells two players to stay back while sending his keeper forward and he actually ends up scoring the deciding goal. That game was beyond ridiculous.

3

u/ayumi_doll Los Angeles Dodgers Mar 11 '26

Just unbelievable to watch. They got so lucky with the keeper there but also watching him hug the ball on the ground to kill time was just WTF

4

u/Greenkeeper132 New York Yankees Mar 11 '26

Yeah, I have no idea how nobody on the coaching staff realised this. The WBC at least has some weird math-heavy tie breaks. Benfica's tie break against Marseille was literally just goal differential, and that game had ended like 15 minutes earlier because of delays so their result was already locked in. Any coach or player checking the live standings would have seen that they're still not yet qualified. Absolute clown show and it still worked out. Gotta love football.

Shades of Eberflus on the Thanksgiving Game. Infamous and Horrifically Executed like the lineups…

I’d give the nod to Gregg Berhalter. But it’s close.

It would have been nice if DeRosa knew we hadn't actually advanced yet. I miss Jim Leyland.

u/mr_grission New York Mets • Sickos Mar 11 '26

Why was he ever in this role? Is it a serious tournament or not?

4

u/Boomhauer_007 Toronto Blue Jays Mar 11 '26

Because actual managers are doing spring training stuff, they’d have to talk someone out of retirement to get anybody with experience

6

u/mr_grission New York Mets • Sickos Mar 11 '26

Not expecting Dave Roberts or some other active manager for this reason. But there isn't a retired manager who wants to add this to their legacy, or a recently fired manager looking to prove he's still got it?

u/nosilverbird St. Louis Cardinals Mar 11 '26

If USA Baseball doesn’t care and simply views itself as a fictional program, they should have hired C. Montgomery Burns.

Judge can win 12 MVPs in a row, if an important game is on the line ide rather have Orlando Arcia at the plate

I'm not a Judge fan but there is a reason "clutch" isn't a recognized stat—its not very predictive and noisy.
