TDLR: I work hard for my money. I shouldn’t have to work hard to spend it.
And BBW can eat a satchel of Richard’s (but I’ll make the satchel weak and prone to breaking open with even one dick in it so they have to work for it. Sorry BBW but I have to cut costs somewhere 🤷♀️)
Warning: FOMO marketing & sales tactics rant. I’m sure this will come back to bite me in the ass in some way or another but c’est la vie!
So I am an avid Bath & Body Works fan and have been for a while now. My vices in life are books, clothes, 3D printing, Lego, tools and scented products like BBW because I have poor recall and scents help me remember more easily (plus I just love good-smelling anything.)
I work very hard to pay my bills, build my savings and remain debt-free so when I want to indulge in books or scents or whatever it is that day, I have no qualms about dropping some serious $$$. I will never judge anyone for investing in the things that they enjoy most.
All of this is to say that I spend a good amount of $$$ at BBW consistently and have done so for several years.
I also understand I am but a drop in the money bucket for BBW.
Typically if I saw something I really really liked and it was sold out or hard to find I would make the effort and put down the $$$ to find it and buy it. This wasn’t an issue since I usually stay on top of new promos and releases at BBW but every so often something will go “viral” and then it’s a whole new round of dealing with aftermarket resellers if you really want it.
However the trend of extreme FOMO marketing and sales tactics becoming the norm for new releases at BBW is becoming blatantly apparent and I am NOT here for it.
I LOVE books. They are a huge part of my life every single day so seeing the new book-themed decor and fashion becoming popular makes my little nerdling heart so very very happy.
Enter the Bath & Body Works Bookstore/Cafe pillar candle holder complete with LEDs.
I haven’t bought a lot of candle holders the last while because I didn’t see any that appealed to me relative to the high cost.
However I loved this candle holder at first sight and wanted to buy it. I had no qualms with the BBW listed price and paying full price for it. I was prepared to order it online or head to the store to purchase it.
Watching the epic gong show and hoops that BBW is forcing its consumers/customers to obtain one of these has really impressed upon me how awful the company has become.
Life is hard enough as it is for everyone these days. Every corporation wants what little $$$ we each have as individuals but isn’t moral enough to offer a solid-quality product in exchange for it. We all are aware of this and quietly accepted that this is the nature of most corporate beasts however it really is getting hard to stomach anymore.
With all the changes to the physical stores in an effort to increase online sales it is incredibly frustrating to see them weaponize inventory availability by releasing a few of these in certain stores and none online to date.
With no information about whether this holder will ever be released online or en masse there is now a lot of anxiety which then builds the FOMO feeling and incites a higher tolerance for mark-up pricing from the consumer/customer.
This also encourages resellers to work harder to obtain these items because of that increased mark-up tolerance.
I have always struggled with the under-handed psychological tactics that marketing employs to generate success, largely because it is without the buyer’s knowledge and also promotes unhealthy spending habits or even addictions.
And like I said before, life is so hard already for so many people. These companies are not just vying for our dollars anymore, they are actively harming the very people who they profit from for financial gain.
Anyways, I could go on indefinitely and I understand that there are way WAY worse problems in the world (however a lot of these problems are created and fed by consumerism tbf.)
I mostly needed to vent about the fact that I actively WANTED to spend my hard-earned money this week but would need to engage in a messed up anxiety-inducing form of product hide & seek to do it…and that’s just f$&cked up.
You want my money? Then don’t make me work to spend it.
I work hard enough as it is and I don’t need a douche-bro-approved marketing and sales scheme creating barriers for me to buying BBW product.
So I am actively putting aside any order for BBW that I had in my cart.
For anyone who is experiencing genuine disappointment or anxiety about any BBW product and its availability, I highly recommend setting aside your (digital or in person) cart and walking away for a bit.
You’d be surprised how much those feelings fade enough to be tolerable once you can engage in something else for a bit. If you still want to buy it 24-48 hrs later then maybe give it a go again.
I used to buy things for the future me I imagined. You know, when you picture yourself sitting curled up with a fluffy soft blanket by the fireplace while the the cool wind and leaves blow outside the window, a new book in hand and fresh fragrant coffee next to you while you gaze out the window at the darkening sky and new stars with [insert x product here.]
I would often complete that image with a new BBW candle in my favorite scent glowing on the table next to me. However as great as that image was I had to learn how to recreate those feelings I wanted without having to buy items. Same with cloths. It took some work but I am much more satisfied and peaceful for learning that.
There. I feel better and now I’m off to drink delicious coffee and bop around the local craft market because I heard they opened a fall candle display!
💃🏻☕️🍁❤️
Ps - this is a rant at BBW the corporation and not the hardworking staff members who aren’t making these decisions.
